  • Totnes, set on the banks of the River Dart in South Devon is a real joy to visit. Independent shops, a weekly market in the centre of the town, elegant Elizabethan architecture, a Motte and Bailey Castle with fabulous views over the town....Totnes has so much to offer visitors and residents alike.
In this video we will take a little look around Totnes town, castle and riverside, aswell as walking over to where the South Devon Railway Station is located.
I feel like I just skimmed the surface of Totnes. The town is worth many visits to discover more of its history.

Everyone misses Leechwell garden and the Leechwells when they visit Totnes. It's worth a stop

Hi Louise, I think you'll definitely enjoy the trip on the South Devon Railway when you come to do it, it really is a lovely little line.
If I can make a suggestion though, from past experience, if starting your journey from the Totnes station of the South Devon Railway, I would aim to arrive at the station for 10am, as this will give you an hour or so before the first train arrives, to have a look around the Totnes Rare Breeds Farm, which is accessible from the end of the station platform. That farm opens for the season on March 23rd (same say as the railway opens for the season), and they lots of lovely animals you can hand feed such as goats and alpacas, and they have a looooovely selection of owls to see as well!
And speaking of the owls, the farms owl handler will sometimes bring an owl out onto the Totnes platform to see the trains, and be made a fuss of by the public (Wizard, their Eurasian eagle-owl is very friendly, and does like his cuddles from what I've seen!).
Also, when you get to the Buckfastleigh end of the railway line, as well as there being a small railway museum at the station, and a nice little riverside walk nearby, there's also another animal attraction situated next to it (accessible from the station car park), that you might like to visit, called "Dartmoor Otters & Buckfast Butterflies". The butterfly farm section is currently closed for the winter until Good Friday, but the otter section is open all year round. From past experience, the best times I've found to visit are shortly before the otter feeding times (11:30am, 2pm and 4pm).
So yeah, when it comes to the South Devon Railway, if you plan things out well, you can enjoy three lovely attractions in one visit :D
Also, as a side note, if you ever travel to Totnes via the mainline railway, you might want to check out the railway stations "Signal Box Cafe", which, as the name suggests, is located in the old Totnes signal box. They serve some really tasty food there for very reasonable prices. My personal fave is their Breakfast bap, which consists of sausage, bacon & egg in a large burger bun. Simply scrumptious!

Oh wow!! Thank you for all this amazingly helpful information! I am super excited to go on that railway now and do all those things! It sounds like a perfect day out.
I am sure many other people will find this so helpful too!
I have been on a heritage line today - East Somerset railway which was awesome!! Video to come when I have sorted through the immense amount of footage!

Hi Louise, That looks a very vibrant town, especially the market place. Very imaginative painting of what might have been ordinary concrete columns, a nice touch!!
I'm not sure if I have been here before but I think so Ive just picked up an old black and white photo of me stood on the footplate of 6412, which I have on the shelf above my screen, its dated 1967 so i don´t remember it!! This engine was restored at Buckfastleigh and is still in service.
If i get the chance would very much like to go back to this area and visit Becky Falls and to St Luke's Church in Buckfastleigh, where there is the mauleseum of Richard Cabell perhaps used by Conan Doyle as the inspiration for the wicked Hugo Baskerville, in his novel The Hound of the Baskervilles. It looks like there is a bus route to Becky Falls, we used to stop there on the way to cornwall!! Ah memories ....
Well done for finding your way to Morrisons!! Nice bit of cake too ....
    Great video, all the best!!

Another lovely video Louise and beautifully filmed! I would love to go to Totness for all those lovely views, cafes and carrot cake! But my goodness that river looks full to bursting with all the rain you’ve had. Looking forward to the next one !

Thank you Alex! Yes, that’s true!! The river was so full after all that rain. I loved the blueness of it. I can’t wait to sail on it again one day on one of the boat trips from Dartmouth.

You managed to capture a lot in this shortish video!
It is a great town, and the independent shops are good.
    Brilliant video!

Louise, thanks for the video! I'm conducting some research on the ancestral home of my family. My 9x great grandfather, William Bogan, was mayor of Totnes sometime between 1570 & 1580. An extra "g" was added to the Bogan surname when my 4x great grandfather immigrated to the USA.
Most of my surname's ancestors lived in Totnes and Littlehempston (near Totnes) for centuries. I hope to visit in 3-4 years. Thanks again from Nashville, Tennessee, USA!

Thank you Faith! I am so pleased that the video came across so well. I enjoyed Totnes so much and it was my aim to make it look and sound as special as I found it. I am excited to go back on the South Devon Railway as soon as I can. Its fantastic that Totnes is served by regular mainline trains from London and many other places.
