Your sense of excitement was almost palpable in that video! After a lot of shilly - shallying at last you have a result!
Despite the awful weather you could see the progress that had been made at that lock. I hope the financial situation doesn’t hold things up! Thanks Paul!

Great update, Paul! It's amazing how much work goes into restoring the canals. Love the on-site presentation and getting to hear the birdsong and even the vehicles in the distance. It will be great to see the finished version.

Yes, it is great news but a huge amount of work still to bring this to fruition. Still, I can see it happening now - and it will be good to film the progress right here on my channel.
Hope you are yours are both well.

Yes, I don't think much will happen for the next few months - at least on the ground - then I think things will get very busy indeed! I can see me being at this location quite a bit soon!
Yes, lots of work still to do, but I am confident it will get done.
      Thank you!

Hi Paul , this latest update is indeed , very exciting ! I hope I live long enough to be able to take my Narrowboat from Saul junction to visit Stroud and beyond ! Looking forward to your next episode.

    • @westcountrywanderings
      @westcountrywanderings  4 місяці тому

Thank you Bernard - I do hope progress now to Saul is speedy - it didn't take too long to do the other Missing Mile (or two) section between Ryeford and Stroud past Ebley, where a completely new section had to be dug out around 2009-2012.
      Cheers!
      Paul

Hello Paul - greetings from Poland
What excellent news! Your delight that planning permission has at long last been agreed, was very clear to see on your face.
Since our last visit to this site, how pleasing it is to see that so much work has been carried out, mainly by I guess some very dedicated volunteers.

    • @westcountrywanderings
      @westcountrywanderings  4 місяці тому +1

      Thank you Michael!
Yes, I am really excited by the news, and I am looking forward to bringing the restoration developments here on the channel later in the year.
I must admit I was very surprised by just how much has been acheived at John Robinson Lock and Dock Lock over the (very wet!) winter season. Superb work by the volunteers.
Hope you are having a good week.
      Take care,
      Paul

Hi Paul thank you for another excellent video, great news on the planning it's been a long time coming. I was hoping work would start before the Autumn, the summer months would be better weatherwise.

      Thank you Geoff.
I would guess with such a huge undertaking and with the volunteers now having to do it themselves, it takes some planning and organising behind the scenes before the ground can be dug.
      Exciting times!
I hope this forthcoming autumn and winter is a lot drier than the last one!
      Cheers,
      Paul

Mornin' Paul, Thanks very much for the update. Your happiness for the green light shone through!!
Its such an interesting time, much of what we can see now, will be hidden away under the water and only revealed when it has to be drained. And of course a brand new section of canal is going to be cut.
It is a shame that costs have risen due to unforeseen circumstances. I would like to make a small contribution, can you point me in the right direction.
You made me chuckle when you realised mid-sentence that you had never seen those steps before, apart from old photos.
I'm following canal in the mountains at the moment, it was built to channel water down to a small power station. The views over the high mountains, snow and wildlife are spectacular.
    Great video, well done

      Good morning David!
And thank you! I forgot to put the volunteering and donating links into the video's description - I have done that now!

Yes, it is horrific how costs have spiralled over the past couple of years - shame it can't all be done by main contractors, but I am still confident it will still get done, although it will take longer that original planned.
Yes, I have never seen that part of Dock Lock before - it was completely overgrown last time!
That canal in the mountains sounds really interesting! I can't think of any high up canals here in England.
      All the best!
      Paul

@@westcountrywanderings Of course its not navigable maybe about 1 to 1.5 metre deep and wide.
The word in Spanish is acequia which is normally associated with channeling water for irrigation. Some of them do this and drive mills. Some date back to to the period of Islamic rule and others from Roman times.
This one is relatively modern only a hundred years old and was specifically for generating electricity so not quite sure what the right word in English should be, a canal sounds navigable and a leat sounds too short, this one is about 5 miles long. Maybe a goit. This one is partially open and often tunnels its way through the mountain or is simply covered over.
I have started to post some photos of it.
      Thanks for the link
      All the best!!
