Northeast Ohio here, live in an ICF construction house. All electric , don't burn any wood inside unless it gets around zero. We can heat our house for about $600 a year. Super efficient build with ICF. Way better than building with sticks !!😊 Keep up the great , relateable content.

Jake, you are a perfect candidate for high efficiency wood boiler. Being young and if you’re planning on staying in that house, I’d recommend looking into Garn/HY-C unit. Get wood and ash out of the living space, burn all year, heat DHW and space. The best way would be to construct a separate shed for boiler and wood. It’s a large capital investment but ROI can come quick and if you’re staying there raising a family well worth the investment. Glad I constructed my setup like I did. Separate 30x30 shed. Wood is always dry, concrete floor, easy maintenance. Setup for when I get old. 17 seasons so far.
More cost effective to update his windows and doors to triple pane and add more insulation.
@ that is a good point. But heat still needs to be generated. And this does nothing for heating DHW. Get the wood and ash and dust and hot stove out of the living space especially with youngsters around.
There’s nothing quite like wood heat. Using the scraps and “uglies” is the way to go. Like you said, it all burns and makes heat. Yes, it’s a lot of work, yes, it’s messy but it’s worth it IMO. Thanks for sharing Jake. Love the baby bouncer! It’s a cool idea. Expensive if you burn up a Kitchen Aid but still pretty cool.
I heat with wood only here in England. Going in to my small Woods and chopping and splitting wood is my Gymnasium, I do not use a car and fuel to drive to the Gym and pay membership and nothing beats being out side.
Also look into hybrid electric heat pump water heater. You’ll burn even less oil. Electric bill goes up only very slightly with the new technology.
As a dude addicted to splitting and burning wood myself, I have to admit… I only burn “ugly” pieces… all the nice wood is for sale!😂
I love my wood stove. I just bought a new 27 ton splitter this year and as long as I have a source for the raw wood (usually not an issue in my particular location), it pays for itself very quickly. Like you said, it is a different kind of heat, and a great thing to cozy up to when you come in out of the cold.
Wow Great video! That's a full time job keeping three stoves going. My mom made me a satchel for hauling in my firewood I have used it for years.
Here in CT in the same area as you I heat with firewood. I haven’t filed my oil tank since 2020 and it’s still over half full… I do have electric hot water. Basically 100% of what I burn is off cuts and chunks from producing standard 16” firewood. So essentially I heat the house for free, rather than paying dump fees to get rid of that wood. I go through a tote or so a week and it is work to bring it in the house, but moving your body never hurt anybody.
Also to note the stove is in my basement so I don’t have to deal with the mess inside the living area which is really nice. It’s not the most efficient set ups that way but works for me.
That is the best baby rocker! My grandson uses it all the time! And loves it.
An average winter here is pricey for fuel oil, we heat about 3000 sqft. A small soapstone wood stove pretty much takes care of our kitchen,dining room and living room. The oil furnace heats the bedrooms, basement, crawlspace, and the upstairs in our silo. We are about 600 gals of oil and 7-8 cords of firewood.
Now that I’ve hit 50 years old I think it time we invest in an OWB. 🤣

Awesome video explaining how beneficial it is to use firewood as long as ur willing to put in the work. My house is bout 1800 sq ft n I eat my house with wood with one stove in my basement. I broke it down once and I can heat my entire house all winter for like 13-15 dollars. That’s just for the gas n oil for the saw n log splitter not factory in my labor because I enjoy doing it and it’s practically free heat. I also hae oil base board heat but have not used it since we moved 13 + years ago. Love the baby chair hack lol we had a swing my oldest loved it but def make sure u strap them in lol for longest time she would lay there n sleep till one day she woke up n decided she was done swinging n thought she’d get out on her own 🤦♂️
We put in a wood stove 2 years ago and while it wasn't cheap, it was a great investment! We live in NWPA and the winters can be in the single digits with all the nasty lake effect snow, ice storms and vey windy (I know it sucks living around here!) but 3 times now our power went out when it was frigid out but we were toasty warm and one outage was almost the entire night. We have a 2 story home and with the use of a small floor fan and a window fan in our bedroom upstairs drawing up the heat, we can keep everything right around 70-73 consistently and best of all our natural gas bill has been in the 30' to low 40's so its basically heating a 80 gallon hot water tank and stove for cooking. we sell fire wood so it was a no brainer for us and usually go through about 4 full cords a season and usually put the last bunch of logs on around 9pm and by 12-1am its still putting out heat then the furnace kicks on in the early am then still have coals at 6-7am then rinse and repeat.
It takes two stove here as well. 2 Quads 2900sqft 72f……..7-9 full cords maybe 75-100 gallons of oil. Cozy!!! Wait until I show Teresa the kitchen aid trick !!!!! Funny as heck!!!!!

Oil here but we have the wood stove, and I agree with you that wood heat is a better kind of warmth.
We have an oil furnace as well. 275 gallon tank. Our house is a ranch and much smaller than yours at 1700 sq’. I have a Osborn 2400 stove and haven’t had to fill our oil since 2022. We just hit a 1/4 tank so it will need filled this spring. Also we live in NE Ohio 5 miles from OWB
I have a fuel oil furnace as well and have only used about a 1/4 tank in the last 6 years but I also have a outdoor wood boiler and as always keep up the great videos

Awesome videos. This might be one of my favoritist. Only recommendation is to make some cookies or bread while you're soothing the babes to sleep!! I've got a wood boiler for my home heat but plans are to instal a firewood stove. Theres something amazing with a fire you can see and the heat.

Hey Jake not sure if u have forced hot air or a central air or mini split … but if ya put the air handler on circulate it really blows around the whole house to disperse heat
Having 2 stoves help big time ! We have unfortunately 1 stove upstairs only but go through 2 tanks a year
Oh for real. I have a heat pump, but i cut a flap in my return. So in the summer I supplement with cold basement air. Hardly ever run the ac unless it's super hot

A wood stove will never break down. A furnace will no matter what type it is. And it always is in the middle of winter 🙄😊
Haven't bought any fuel oil since the late 80s ! It's all wood stove heat, nothing like wood heat. We go through 10 full cords a season.

I have a 4x2x2 box in my living room next to the stove that holds a weeks worth or about 2.5 heaped wheelbarrow loads, a woman would murder me lol my stove is a lot smaller than ur small one and im gona get really tired of burning my scraps. I struggled for several years with losing sleep from overheating my house, I can’t believe what a difference a reciprocating fan at the foot of my bed when it’s warmer made

Still surprising that you pay $60/month if you have free wood. If I had free wood, my heating bill would be... $0. (I pay $80/month now)
The lionshare of that $60 per month is for hot water which my wood stoves cannot produce.
Personally i use roughly 600 gallons of propane a year. But I hadn't burned wood for heat in about 3 years
