I truly love stand mount speakers and adore the imaging and adept presentation with vocals and acoustic instruments, but extremely well designed floor standing speakers always remind of why I come back to them time and time again. Scale and impact. I always think to myself, “oh yeah that’s what I was missing” just my own experience
That is something I haven’t really played with much, I did have the KLH model 5s which I didn’t love. I really like the cohesive nature of smallish 2 driver speakers, but that often comes with certain dynamic limitations. I have paradigm founder 100F for main system which are so dynamic and full and super low distortion, but even an inexpensive small speaker like the AE100 MK2 (which I picked up recently) can do certain things with spatial presentation that are very special and different. I did get a chance to listen to the mofi sp 10’s and those seem to bridge the gap a bit for sure, and I haven’t heard to Genelecs which I may have to do.
I like that you review the smaller little less mainstream companies products. They are so overlooked. I love supporting small family businesses, handcrafted products.
I love the fact you compare all the speakers you review to your ProAC speakers, give your reviews a level of consistency, in the same way people like Nelson Pass test all their amps on the say Tannoy speakers… it’s the only way to measure minor improvements! Keep the the good work Taran!
I love our cottage HiFi industry , it's one of the few remaining things this country is great at. Long may it be aloud to continue. Proac must be mad or asleep not to send you their new speakers for review as you are one of their best fanboys, maybe they have changed something in the sound and they don't want to offend you.

This was very interesting! I used to have floorstanders but then switched them to stand mounts with a sub. When listening more critically, I want to have the speakers pulled out almost two meters from the wall, but can’t have them there all the time. So when I’m not listening, I usually move them back right next to the wall to save space. Moving them back and forth would be tough with floorstanders, and my wife would never be able to do it herself, so I needed lighter speaker, and thus the decision to switch. I have been very happy with the stand mounts. And right from the beginning, I noticed how much easier it was to make the stand mounts disappear.

Another great review Tarun. I heard these speakers (I think the actual same pair in white!) in the Exposure room at the Bristol show yesterday. They were on the end of the latest Exposure 3510 CD player, Pre and power amps. The sound was sublime to my ears, playing well recorded acoustic/vocal music I forgot I was listening to a hifi system, it just sounded natural and real. I'm not sure how they would "rock out" but they certainly piqued my interest.
I proudly own the monitor vesrion - the LS6. They are powered with an EAR 834 tube amp. I absolutely don’t miss bass at all. Midrange is xcellent and - what is most important to me - imaging is excellent. They replaced some Cabasse Bora that were more dynamic. But listening at low levels and longer listening sessions are better with the Grahams. Treble position is always at +2 dB and the speaker are pointing directly at me. I think I am going to keep them for a long time. But I want to test them with a good transistor amp as well.
I've had both stand mount and floorstanding speakers, both have plus's and minus's, and i'm still with my floorstanding Totem's, they give me everything I need currently for the music I listen to, there's always the itch to think you can improve when now i spend more time listening to the music rather than the equipment..🙂
Thanks for the excellent review. I am troubled by the speaker terminal placement. It would require someone to purchase an additional three feet of possibly expensive speaker cables or maybe a new much longer pair to hang off the terminals whereas, if mounted low one's current speaker cables could be used.

I always had voorstanders, but since a year of two, I listen to standmounts, and I love them….!, what I do miss is the low end, especially from the transmission lines. Thank you for the great reviews.
Gorgeous speaker but puzzled as to why they put the HF adjustment on the front instead of the back. For that kind of money at least I want something that looks cleaner head on As for your question about floor mount vs standmount I have never really understood this. The stand takes up the same effective space as a similar floor mount in probably most cases. Personally I like a small monitor with a sub, but that actually takes up even more space
Hi Tarun, just doing my homework in prep for the call this weekend! Give me a floorstander every time, but in a small room I’m forced to concede that stand mounts are inevitable. Incidentally, there was another character around in the BBC’s days of yore, one Robin Marshall. He went on to found Audiomaster and also make use of the fancy new cone material, Bextrene. I owned a pair of his MLS1s as my first pair of proper speakers. They sounded good but the real stars of the range were the MLS4s which my mate had. Boy was I jealous. They were much bigger and to me they were the first speakers which exhibited the house sound of Monitor Audio, a brand which also benefited from Robin’s hand on the helm. No surprise I’ve been a long standing MA fan then.

Really nice review, thank you. I own the LS6 chartwell (bookshelf version) and love it. I found the amount of bass to be more than enough for my taste, it fills nicely a midsize room of about 20 squares meters. They are feed by a Sugden 21 AI special edition, the source is the bluesound node 2i with linear powe supply and the DAC is the Denafrips Aries II. I really enjoyed this combination, but I’m looking up to upgrade or the source or the dac… I’ve started my journey in the audiophile world 30 years ago, and owned only 2 pairs of floor-standers speakers, the Acoustic Energy 109 and Monitor Audio bronze series. I’ve been more satisfied with smaller speakers, probably because of the size of the room which was never too big, and the imaging of the soundstage. Since 3 years now I’ve added a sub in my system (from svs) and when it is well set up, it brings a more 3D dimension to the soundstage, so amazing !
I just prefer a floor stander as I love the presentation of the full bass response as does my wife. She loves the way the Predator subwoofers vanish with the crossover to my mains set at 80 Htz. Happy wife, happy life lol and thanks!
The B&W 805 Signature standmounts provided a great deal of pleasure . Their bass was awesome although the top end didn’t extend as much as it could . I then moved onto active DSP speakers from Meridian which I owned for several years before needing to downsize due to a growing family . I initially went for the Stenheim Alumine 2s standmounts which were great but ultimately lacked the scale and ability of full range speakers . I finally settled for the Stenheim Alumine 3 floorstanders which are neutral and have an appealing design aesthetic. Ironically I have mostly moved away from uk brands and currently my set up has a Swiss emphasis . Laughably my downsizing became upsizing from a weight perspective - the new speakers and amp weigh 190kg compared to a more manageable 130kg meridian set up ! Happy new year to you !
Hello Tarun, as you speak with reverence for your ProAc Response 1sc s, I also think highly of my ProAc EBTs as they are about detail, soundstage and air. These are important and each listener must find which speakers make their ears sing! These would be to much in most all but two of the rooms in my place. I prefer the monitors on stands and subs. I ideally would like a sub per each monitor with the midrange aligned with the sub for optimum sound quality. I think I could accommodate such a stand for interested parties. I’m considering a REL sub with each of my EBTs as an experiment. Good things come to those willing to go the extra mile. Another product in the works. Really enjoyed the sharing of the history as I find this helps us understand the design aspect of the review. Bravo Tarun! Another fab review! Cheers all.

Hi Tarun, you should checkout Revival Audio Atalante 5 3-way stand mount speakers with 12 inch woofer and Atalante 3 2-way small stand mount speaker, they are made in France designed by Daniel Emonts. Revival Audio is a relatively new french company with two products to their name; the Atalante 3 and the much larger Atalante 5 . The Atalante 5 cost €4490/£4490 plus £399 for the stands.
Great review, thanks. I've recently upgraded back to Standmounts from Floorstanders. My original systems revolved around various wharfedale diamonds (4,8,10) on Target stands (I was on the budget end of this hobby). I then had the opportunity to get some 230 floorstanders at a price I couldn't say no to. I was never happy. The bass was overwhelming in my room and my neighbours complained about bass for the first time. I found them ponderous and my subs were adjusted nearly every time I listened, the soundstage was noticeably lacking. Late last year enough was enough and I upgraded to the Evo 4.2s on the Evo stands (speaker range I'm surprised you've never reviewed!) Harmony has been more than restored, bass impact without the boom and (even more than the Diamonds) soundstage that makes these speakers disappear completely. Subs integrated within a couple of listening sessions. They are wonderful. The only downside is- I need to upgrade my DAC to resolve more detail. But not sure this is a downside 😀

Excellent presentation. Before owning any equipment, I thought it didn't make sense to get book shelves for the price of towers. After owning a pair of towers and many pairs of book shelves later, that opinion changed. The reason is the same as yours: space.

For me, having as much bass extension as possible from the main speakers is key. This is almost by definition going to have better coherency, than a subwoofer. And a slim floorstanding tower takes no more room than a standmount speaker. So, I have never bought any standmount speakers for my main stereo system. Now that I have designed mass loaded transmission line speakers, I realize how much bass detail and clarity is possible, and won't be giving these qualities up.

Yes, designing TLs is a lot more involved than sealed or ported, but with today's software and desktop computing, it is not nearly as difficult as it was in decades past. And the results are even better, because of the 3D acoustic modeling. Actual construction is only a bit more effort, though - and I hope we get more TL speakers on the market.
Great review Tarun as always. I’ve had first hand experience with the floor stand versions, I’d agreed quite neutral, slightly less bass than these, great with any music I tried. I did try Sugden amps with them. They seemed to work🤔….so interesting finding that the exposure ran out of puff. The current on tap maybe? Always look forward to your reviews. Keep up the good work!
Another excellent review, and the comparison to your Proacs is most useful. As far as floorstanders vs. stand mount. I've owned 2 pair of B&W floorstanders. DM330 and their predecessors. Currently on my 3d set of standmounts. While the standmounts definitely win in soundstage precision, I miss the lower extension and sensitivity of the floorstanders. In my current abode, I just can't sit far enough away from the bigger speakers for the sound to coalesce. To my ears the added bass extension of the larger speakers adds a floor to the soundstage. With the standmounts the image is more floating in space, if this makes sense.
Again, great review. I love the consistency that you bring to the reviews withyour Pro Acs being the center poles. I am having a quite similar relation with vintage System Audio speakers - just love their sound signature (very dynamic). However recently stepped up from the 1270 to the 2070. that model has the same tweeter (Scan Speak D 2010) as your ProAc. However I am struggling with that tweeter, love it’s sound dispersion that goes well beyond the speakers, but unfortunately it can be a little forward sounding. So if you have some tipps how to tame it a little bit, highly appreciated.
Thank you Bernd. I have heard that the D2010 can sound a little bright in some speakers. I guess it all comes down to integration with the other drivers and crossover design. I would try less toe-in so the speakers are firing almost straight into the room 👍
I have always been fascinated by its smaller version, the LS6, mainly because it's smaller and because it's so goddamn cute. If it sounds like its taller brother then it too would be a good allrounder (Rock, Classical, Jazz, ...) although I've heard they do need a lot of distance from the wall. I don't have that space in my smaller room.
Hi Tarun, The Arendal Sound 1723 Tower (50kg each) is having great press atm. Might be worth reviewing those or the next one down the "S" version (30kg each). One to ponder. Interesting review as always.
I love all the BBC monitors and various speakers from Harbeth, Spendor, Mission, etc. but man do they cost a lot more here in the New World. These Graham Chartwell LS6F, for example, at $3,333 pound sterling is equal to $4,075 USD. And I can appreciate that it costs more to get them here, but they retail for $5,719!!! Walnut finish is $6,623 - about the same as a pair of made in the USA Klipsch Cornwalls. Clearly apples and oranges, but you get my point. At that price, there are an infinite number of better speakers to suit any taste. My understanding is that it cuts both ways and US products are much pricier in the UK. Anyway, nice video. Always enjoy your content.
I love a good backstory! More importantly, a historical dimension gives us a sense of development and cultural awareness that is often lacking in the society we're creating by default. (For much the same reasons I really appreciate the modern Enfield India motorcycles!). A really informative, expert review and awareness of the BBC 'sound heritage' - and delivered with highly professional BBC Radio 3 type production values.
I too own Response 1SCs and have found floor mounts in the price range to sound a little 'flabby'. I place a lot of emphasis on pace and rhythm which the 1SCs are super at presenting.
I find a well designed floor standing speaker can image as well as a stand mount. But the effort has to be put in to make it work. Also the larger baffle can help the woofer couple to the air better for more bass impact.
I have an old love for tower speakers. All the cool homes had them. I ended up getting a set of Tekton towers for my little room bit much but love them.
Great review as always. I’m the totally happy owner of graham audio ls5/9 with a rega aethos amplifier. I found my speaker style for sure. like your Proac`s they use a 19mm tweeter and this is unexpected nowadays so it could be for purposes of dispersion they have been chosen and may explain why the Proacs have stood the test of time for so long.Who knows ?
Floorstanders or stand mounts? I bought some Spendor A4s (Thanks for the history lesson!) they seem comparable to these LS6Fs, I certainly prefer the Spendor's visually - but I do find I don't always want the big sound floorstanders provide. Having just bought some Dali Menuet SEs (Thanks for the review!) they provide a wonderful alternative, maintaining the quality but reducing the audio footprint significantly. So I guess the (expensive) answer for me is BOTH! Thanks for another interesting and enjoyable video.
Great review. Aesthetically and sound stage I prefer bookies. However I miss the depth, dynamics and scale floor standing speakers present. I make up for most of it with dual subs but it's still not the same. Question, are the Magnapan LRS's on your list? Very interested to hear what you think of them.
I had a pair of Tannoy Mercury's many moons ago, they are OK for most peoples requirements. My requirements are a bit more demanding, so ATC40 size is as small as I would go ideally.
Hey Tarun, been a while since I’ve commented, but I had to for this one. I’ve had the LS6 bookshelf speakers for a few years now and I love them. Great to see you review the floorstanders including your thoughts on them compared to your Proacs. They are a fantastic speaker, although the retail price, here in Canada at least, is fairly high (as are all the Graham speakers). Due to recent life changes however (18 month old son) they really don’t get any use at the moment and I’m on the hunt for some nearfields for my desk to replace them. I may check out the Dali Menuets or possibly the Proac Tablette 10 or another LS3/5 variant. Hoping they might have similar qualities. Unfortunately the Graham LS3/5s are very expensive over here and virtually never show up on the used market. Rick

As usual another excellent review Tarun. I picked up on your reference to the Exposure 2510 as not quite having the desired level of attack to get the best out of the LS6F's. This came as a disappointment as that is the amplifier I own and I am unlikely to be changing it in the near future. I have been offered to trial these speakers by a local dealer, though I wonder if I may be better looking at something less demanding? I mainly listen to vinyl on a Thorens TD 126 Mk 2 with the typical go to SME 3009 arm etc.. I wonder if the stand mount version would be less demanding?
Great review as always. I realize there is a romance with British monitors, especially in Britain proper, but I find them wholly underwhelming and unimaginative. However, these LS6F look like something that shows some creativity.
Standmounts Vs Floorstanders. Prefer the overall capabilities of a good standmount. However, the sight of metal stands doesn't appeal aesthetically. Also believe compact floorstanders are just as easy with placement as standmounts. Nor doI think standmounts are space-savers. Every ported or vented speaker will require 12 to 24" from the back wall to work at their best... certainly in my room. Infinite baffle monitors are a little more flexible with placement, but unless you can source a dedicated wall mounted speaker, or something like a Neat Ioata, there's always a compromise.
So like a bookshelf speaker but in a floor-standing speaker cabinet!? I'm not sure why you would do this? A more bassy bookshelf? But plenty of room in that cabinet for a least one more driver?? I guess adding another or maybe another two drivers comes with a down side.... detail? My Mission 753's with 4 drivers and a tweeter must come with all the positives of a driver heavy speaker and also all the negatives! No need for a subwoofer but a lost in detail and separation?? Anyway thanks for the review and hopefully more floor-standing speaker reviews to come Tarun!!? ;)
Nice review. I personally love standmount speakers. Big fan of the Spendor D9.2 but ended up buying Yamaha ns5000 which I think are spectacularly subtle and natural. Hope you review some of these larger standmounts?
Properly setup & driven, the yamaha ns5000 sounds divine. Far better than some Magico towers when i heard them both driven by some ultra expensive solution amps.
Haven't had floor standers, but I do have some bigger stand mounts of about 24 by 12 inches (three way) and I like them for the sense of scale they give me. Currently I a seeing a pair of ProAc one SCs for sale for €1250 (about 1100 pounds) do you think that is a good price for them?
How do these compare with the ATC SCM19 actives? I am looking for a replacement for my Ruark Talisman mk1's. I can only have floor standers as the high command don't really like ugly metal stands.

QotD: I consider my HiFi to be furniture, for example I use the IKEA Stockholm TV unit as my "HiFi rack". Pretty stuff on top, ugly stuff and cables tucked away. I prefer the look of standmount speakers without grills on modern-minimal stands. For me there's a trade-off between quality and looks (hence being single, ha!!!).
When I grow up I want to produce review vids like this. He also cost me a lot of $ as I had no plans to buy new speakers until his review of the ATC SCM19s... Ugh.

I myself have rogue Cronus magnum 2 driving ls6 stand mount at 100 wpc on kt88 kr which I love for the 3d imaging tubes provide. I have been pondering a ldf ncse at 75 wpc or a Hegel like what you have in this room. Do SS state really add something to this speaker or should I stick with tubes?
My floor standers only sounded superb after installing 30 bass traps in my listening room. Six traps are tuned pressure types and the rest are velocity broad band types. Sadly the traps cost more than the speakers.
@@abritishaudiophile7314 Hi Tarun and thank you for replying. I am convinced that extensive acoustic room treatment is the best way forward. Mucking about with DSP such as Dirac Live seems wrong to me. Altering the signal sent to the speakers to correct room acoustics is covering up the symptoms without attacking the route cause of the room acoustic problems.
don't see any problem with the one SC as a reference. You know them and they are bloody good.. And if people want something similar they can get the Proac DB1.. As a DB1 owner i can say that the revolution is not extreme, but it is a refined one SC :) The one thing that impress me every time i sitt down and listen is the unholy bass respons the DB1 produce.. THAT is a key change from the one SC :)
I recently started found your channel and I find the information very useful :) I am trying to get my 1st hi-fi and as you can imagine I am lost ! I had some good demos from my local Richer sounds (swiss cottage, excellent team) and after trying Marantz and few other I liked Cambridge Audio 81 amplifier and B&W 603s The biggest concern I have now is that.. The room it's going is very small and strange shape what would be your advice? I do really like the sound when I had the demo.. the guys at Richer sounds even opened the shop early to set up a demo in hardfloor area ! My room Shape - almost like a fat "L" shape Longest side is - 5m widest side - 3.5m |----------------| | 2.7m | < 2.3m | |----------- | 1.8m ^ _________________ 3.5m Any help would be greatful The room is hard floor with very less dampening and furnitures

@A British Audiophile On the contrary. Although they use the rear wall as reflection, the near wall position enhances bass output as most speakers do without getting muddy or boomy. They have an almost di-pole open midrange that is pretty amazing!
My wife would infer that a standpoint on a stand is not impressive enough. I used to love them but I’d rather have a floor stander and not have to explain the advantages of stand mounts. Love those classic brands with their own sounds and pride of ownership.
Seven years ago I had the chance to listen to the bigger brother, the 5/8. And in over 40 years in hifi I think I never enjoyed it more listening to music from a hifi System. The only downsidefor me was the price. Sadly, because the sound quality was really something special.
I went from a Naim setup with Chartwell LS3/5As to a Luxman LX-380 tube amp powering DeVore Fidelity O/93s along with a Terminator and innuos zen mk3. Huge improvement in all aspects with soundstage top of the list.
My objection against stand mount speakers are the stand mounts themselves. Usually they’re too low, 60 cm on average, they’re ugly and they’re far too expensive as well. One has to be very lucky to find affordable stands which have the right height, the correct support in terms of the size of the surfaces on which one has to put the bookshelf speakers on, the stability of the stands as a whole and all that finalised in a beautiful design which can carry the approval of the beauty committee as well as approved by the budget committee. Those were the reasons for me to go for floor standing speakers and as expected they passed both committees with ease!
A well known reference is essential as a control which you have achieved with your trusty ProAcs. In a way these floorstanders remind me of the accoustic controlled classic Kef 104 / 104ab which like the early LS3/5a designs of yesteryear featured the classic 19mm T27 tweeter.

With the advent of higher tech powered speakers with built in amplification/DSP/DAC/BT/streamer etc, isn’t the world of passive Hifi speakers and separates now just too inconvenient and lower performance, unless you spend a fortune? Its nice to have the ability to tweak or go the nostalgia route with vintage speakers, receivers and turntables etc, but bang for buck, the level of performance, compact footprint, ease of installation and convenience makes anything else seem pointless?

I really don't understand the comparison to your tiny stand mounts. They differ in design and size. Physical size has the most relevance in speaker sound.
Physical size is only one factor that differs between speakers. It is relevant but not necessarily the most relevant factor factor in determining a speakers sound.

The stands you put the stand mounts on are always unattractive, the only stands I've ever seen that were nice looking are the ones for Wilson's Tune Tot. In my living room, I have floor-standing speakers that were chosen as much for their look as their sound. In my small listening room where I have no space to move speakers out from the wall I've placed, on the wall speakers, and to my surprise, they sound beyond good and look nice.
Number of reasons Ian. You can’t just system quality through another system. It would require professional mics and equipment to do it to a reasonable standard. There are copyright infringement issues.

Basically you like 3-way. Not floorstanding per as. Genelec 8351B is bookshelf but 3 way. That’s a class act.
That is something I haven’t really played with much, I did have the KLH model 5s which I didn’t love. I really like the cohesive nature of smallish 2 driver speakers, but that often comes with certain dynamic limitations. I have paradigm founder 100F for main system which are so dynamic and full and super low distortion, but even an inexpensive small speaker like the AE100 MK2 (which I picked up recently) can do certain things with spatial presentation that are very special and different. I did get a chance to listen to the mofi sp 10’s and those seem to bridge the gap a bit for sure, and I haven’t heard to Genelecs which I may have to do.
I like that you review the smaller little less mainstream companies products. They are so overlooked. I love supporting small family businesses, handcrafted products.

I love the fact you compare all the speakers you review to your ProAC speakers, give your reviews a level of consistency, in the same way people like Nelson Pass test all their amps on the say Tannoy speakers… it’s the only way to measure minor improvements! Keep the the good work Taran!

The Graham audio LS6 is one of my favorite speakers I’ve heard. Instruments and voices sound very very good. Big fan along with the Harbeth speakers.

I love our cottage HiFi industry , it's one of the few remaining things this country is great at. Long may it be aloud to continue. Proac must be mad or asleep not to send you their new speakers for review as you are one of their best fanboys, maybe they have changed something in the sound and they don't want to offend you.

This was very interesting! I used to have floorstanders but then switched them to stand mounts with a sub. When listening more critically, I want to have the speakers pulled out almost two meters from the wall, but can’t have them there all the time. So when I’m not listening, I usually move them back right next to the wall to save space. Moving them back and forth would be tough with floorstanders, and my wife would never be able to do it herself, so I needed lighter speaker, and thus the decision to switch. I have been very happy with the stand mounts. And right from the beginning, I noticed how much easier it was to make the stand mounts disappear.

Another great review Tarun. I heard these speakers (I think the actual same pair in white!) in the Exposure room at the Bristol show yesterday. They were on the end of the latest Exposure 3510 CD player, Pre and power amps. The sound was sublime to my ears, playing well recorded acoustic/vocal music I forgot I was listening to a hifi system, it just sounded natural and real. I'm not sure how they would "rock out" but they certainly piqued my interest.

I proudly own the monitor vesrion - the LS6. They are powered with an EAR 834 tube amp. I absolutely don’t miss bass at all. Midrange is xcellent and - what is most important to me - imaging is excellent. They replaced some Cabasse Bora that were more dynamic. But listening at low levels and longer listening sessions are better with the Grahams. Treble position is always at +2 dB and the speaker are pointing directly at me. I think I am going to keep them for a long time. But I want to test them with a good transistor amp as well.

I've had both stand mount and floorstanding speakers, both have plus's and minus's, and i'm still with my floorstanding Totem's, they give me everything I need currently for the music I listen to, there's always the itch to think you can improve when now i spend more time listening to the music rather than the equipment..🙂

Thanks for the excellent review. I am troubled by the speaker terminal placement. It would require someone to purchase an additional three feet of possibly expensive speaker cables or maybe a new much longer pair to hang off the terminals whereas, if mounted low one's current speaker cables could be used.

I always had voorstanders, but since a year of two, I listen to standmounts, and I love them….!, what I do miss is the low end, especially from the transmission lines.

Gorgeous speaker but puzzled as to why they put the HF adjustment on the front instead of the back. For that kind of money at least I want something that looks cleaner head on
As for your question about floor mount vs standmount I have never really understood this. The stand takes up the same effective space as a similar floor mount in probably most cases. Personally I like a small monitor with a sub, but that actually takes up even more space

Hi Tarun, just doing my homework in prep for the call this weekend! Give me a floorstander every time, but in a small room I’m forced to concede that stand mounts are inevitable. Incidentally, there was another character around in the BBC’s days of yore, one Robin Marshall.
He went on to found Audiomaster and also make use of the fancy new cone material, Bextrene. I owned a pair of his MLS1s as my first pair of proper speakers. They sounded good but the real stars of the range were the MLS4s which my mate had. Boy was I jealous.
They were much bigger and to me they were the first speakers which exhibited the house sound of Monitor Audio, a brand which also benefited from Robin’s hand on the helm. No surprise I’ve been a long standing MA fan then.
The name seems to ring a bell but I can’t recall any particular details about Mr Marshall. Thanks for sharing Mark and see you Sunday night 👍

Really nice review, thank you. I own the LS6 chartwell (bookshelf version) and love it. I found the amount of bass to be more than enough for my taste, it fills nicely a midsize room of about 20 squares meters.
They are feed by a Sugden 21 AI special edition, the source is the bluesound node 2i with linear powe supply and the DAC is the Denafrips Aries II.
I really enjoyed this combination, but I’m looking up to upgrade or the source or the dac…
I’ve started my journey in the audiophile world 30 years ago, and owned only 2 pairs of floor-standers speakers, the Acoustic Energy 109 and Monitor Audio bronze series. I’ve been more satisfied with smaller speakers, probably because of the size of the room which was never too big, and the imaging of the soundstage.
Since 3 years now I’ve added a sub in my system (from svs) and when it is well set up, it brings a more 3D dimension to the soundstage, so amazing !

I just prefer a floor stander as I love the presentation of the full bass response as does my wife. She loves the way the Predator subwoofers vanish with the crossover to my mains set at 80 Htz. Happy wife, happy life lol and thanks!

The B&W 805 Signature standmounts provided a great deal of pleasure . Their bass was awesome although the top end didn’t extend as much as it could . I then moved onto active DSP speakers from Meridian which I owned for several years before needing to downsize due to a growing family . I initially went for the Stenheim Alumine 2s standmounts which were great but ultimately lacked the scale and ability of full range speakers . I finally settled for the Stenheim Alumine 3 floorstanders which are neutral and have an appealing design aesthetic. Ironically I have mostly moved away from uk brands and currently my set up has a Swiss emphasis . Laughably my downsizing became upsizing from a weight perspective - the new speakers and amp weigh 190kg compared to a more manageable 130kg meridian set up ! Happy new year to you !

Hello Tarun, as you speak with reverence for your ProAc Response 1sc s, I also think highly of my ProAc EBTs as they are about detail, soundstage and air. These are important and each listener must find which speakers make their ears sing! These would be to much in most all but two of the rooms in my place. I prefer the monitors on stands and subs. I ideally would like a sub per each monitor with the midrange aligned with the sub for optimum sound quality. I think I could accommodate such a stand for interested parties. I’m considering a REL sub with each of my EBTs as an experiment. Good things come to those willing to go the extra mile. Another product in the works. Really enjoyed the sharing of the history as I find this helps us understand the design aspect of the review. Bravo Tarun! Another fab review! Cheers all.

Hi Tarun, you should checkout Revival Audio Atalante 5 3-way stand mount speakers with 12 inch woofer and Atalante 3 2-way small stand mount speaker, they are made in France designed by Daniel Emonts. Revival Audio is a relatively new french company with two products to their name; the Atalante 3 and the much larger Atalante 5 . The Atalante 5 cost €4490/£4490 plus £399 for the stands.

Great review, thanks. I've recently upgraded back to Standmounts from Floorstanders. My original systems revolved around various wharfedale diamonds (4,8,10) on Target stands (I was on the budget end of this hobby). I then had the opportunity to get some 230 floorstanders at a price I couldn't say no to. I was never happy. The bass was overwhelming in my room and my neighbours complained about bass for the first time. I found them ponderous and my subs were adjusted nearly every time I listened, the soundstage was noticeably lacking. Late last year enough was enough and I upgraded to the Evo 4.2s on the Evo stands (speaker range I'm surprised you've never reviewed!) Harmony has been more than restored, bass impact without the boom and (even more than the Diamonds) soundstage that makes these speakers disappear completely. Subs integrated within a couple of listening sessions. They are wonderful. The only downside is- I need to upgrade my DAC to resolve more detail. But not sure this is a downside 😀

For me, having as much bass extension as possible from the main speakers is key. This is almost by definition going to have better coherency, than a subwoofer. And a slim floorstanding tower takes no more room than a standmount speaker. So, I have never bought any standmount speakers for my main stereo system.
Now that I have designed mass loaded transmission line speakers, I realize how much bass detail and clarity is possible, and won't be giving these qualities up.

Yes, designing TLs is a lot more involved than sealed or ported, but with today's software and desktop computing, it is not nearly as difficult as it was in decades past. And the results are even better, because of the 3D acoustic modeling. Actual construction is only a bit more effort, though - and I hope we get more TL speakers on the market.
Great review Tarun as always. I’ve had first hand experience with the floor stand versions, I’d agreed quite neutral, slightly less bass than these, great with any music I tried. I did try Sugden amps with them. They seemed to work🤔….so interesting finding that the exposure ran out of puff. The current on tap maybe? Always look forward to your reviews. Keep up the good work!

As far as floorstanders vs. stand mount. I've owned 2 pair of B&W floorstanders. DM330 and their predecessors. Currently on my 3d set of standmounts. While the standmounts definitely win in soundstage precision, I miss the lower extension and sensitivity of the floorstanders.
In my current abode, I just can't sit far enough away from the bigger speakers for the sound to coalesce.
To my ears the added bass extension of the larger speakers adds a floor to the soundstage. With the standmounts the image is more floating in space, if this makes sense.

I am having a quite similar relation with vintage System Audio speakers - just love their sound signature (very dynamic). However recently stepped up from the 1270 to the 2070. that model has the same tweeter (Scan Speak D 2010) as your ProAc. However I am struggling with that tweeter, love it’s sound dispersion that goes well beyond the speakers, but unfortunately it can be a little forward sounding. So if you have some tipps how to tame it a little bit, highly appreciated.
Thank you Bernd. I have heard that the D2010 can sound a little bright in some speakers. I guess it all comes down to integration with the other drivers and crossover design. I would try less toe-in so the speakers are firing almost straight into the room 👍
I have always been fascinated by its smaller version, the LS6, mainly because it's smaller and because it's so goddamn cute. If it sounds like its taller brother then it too would be a good allrounder (Rock, Classical, Jazz, ...) although I've heard they do need a lot of distance from the wall. I don't have that space in my smaller room.

I love all the BBC monitors and various speakers from Harbeth, Spendor, Mission, etc. but man do they cost a lot more here in the New World. These Graham Chartwell LS6F, for example, at $3,333 pound sterling is equal to $4,075 USD. And I can appreciate that it costs more to get them here, but they retail for $5,719!!! Walnut finish is $6,623 - about the same as a pair of made in the USA Klipsch Cornwalls. Clearly apples and oranges, but you get my point. At that price, there are an infinite number of better speakers to suit any taste. My understanding is that it cuts both ways and US products are much pricier in the UK. Anyway, nice video. Always enjoy your content.

I too own Response 1SCs and have found floor mounts in the price range to sound a little 'flabby'. I place a lot of emphasis on pace and rhythm which the 1SCs are super at presenting.

I find a well designed floor standing speaker can image as well as a stand mount. But the effort has to be put in to make it work. Also the larger baffle can help the woofer couple to the air better for more bass impact.

like your Proac`s they use a 19mm tweeter and this is unexpected nowadays so it could be for purposes of dispersion they have been chosen and may explain why the Proacs have stood the test of time for so long.Who knows ?

Floorstanders or stand mounts? I bought some Spendor A4s (Thanks for the history lesson!) they seem comparable to these LS6Fs, I certainly prefer the Spendor's visually - but I do find I don't always want the big sound floorstanders provide. Having just bought some Dali Menuet SEs (Thanks for the review!) they provide a wonderful alternative, maintaining the quality but reducing the audio footprint significantly. So I guess the (expensive) answer for me is BOTH! Thanks for another interesting and enjoyable video.

Great review. Aesthetically and sound stage I prefer bookies. However I miss the depth, dynamics and scale floor standing speakers present. I make up for most of it with dual subs but it's still not the same. Question, are the Magnapan LRS's on your list? Very interested to hear what you think of them.

I had a pair of Tannoy Mercury's many moons ago, they are OK for most peoples requirements. My requirements are a bit more demanding, so ATC40 size is as small as I would go ideally.

Hey Tarun, been a while since I’ve commented, but I had to for this one. I’ve had the LS6 bookshelf speakers for a few years now and I love them. Great to see you review the floorstanders including your thoughts on them compared to your Proacs. They are a fantastic speaker, although the retail price, here in Canada at least, is fairly high (as are all the Graham speakers).
Due to recent life changes however (18 month old son) they really don’t get any use at the moment and I’m on the hunt for some nearfields for my desk to replace them. I may check out the Dali Menuets or possibly the Proac Tablette 10 or another LS3/5 variant. Hoping they might have similar qualities. Unfortunately the Graham LS3/5s are very expensive over here and virtually never show up on the used market.

As usual another excellent review Tarun. I picked up on your reference to the Exposure 2510 as not quite having the desired level of attack to get the best out of the LS6F's. This came as a disappointment as that is the amplifier I own and I am unlikely to be changing it in the near future. I have been offered to trial these speakers by a local dealer, though I wonder if I may be better looking at something less demanding? I mainly listen to vinyl on a Thorens TD 126 Mk 2 with the typical go to SME 3009 arm etc.. I wonder if the stand mount version would be less demanding?

Standmounts Vs Floorstanders.
Prefer the overall capabilities of a good standmount. However, the sight of metal stands doesn't appeal aesthetically.
Also believe compact floorstanders are just as easy with placement as standmounts. Nor doI think standmounts are space-savers. Every ported or vented speaker will require 12 to 24" from the back wall to work at their best... certainly in my room. Infinite baffle monitors are a little more flexible with placement, but unless you can source a dedicated wall mounted speaker, or something like a Neat Ioata, there's always a compromise.

So like a bookshelf speaker but in a floor-standing speaker cabinet!? I'm not sure why you would do this? A more bassy bookshelf? But plenty of room in that cabinet for a least one more driver?? I guess adding another or maybe another two drivers comes with a down side.... detail? My Mission 753's with 4 drivers and a tweeter must come with all the positives of a driver heavy speaker and also all the negatives! No need for a subwoofer but a lost in detail and separation??

Nice review. I personally love standmount speakers. Big fan of the Spendor D9.2 but ended up buying Yamaha ns5000 which I think are spectacularly subtle and natural. Hope you review some of these larger standmounts?

Properly setup & driven, the yamaha ns5000 sounds divine. Far better than some Magico towers when i heard them both driven by some ultra expensive solution amps.
Haven't had floor standers, but I do have some bigger stand mounts of about 24 by 12 inches (three way) and I like them for the sense of scale they give me. Currently I a seeing a pair of ProAc one SCs for sale for €1250 (about 1100 pounds) do you think that is a good price for them?

How do these compare with the ATC SCM19 actives? I am looking for a replacement for my Ruark Talisman mk1's. I can only have floor standers as the high command don't really like ugly metal stands.
The SCM19 Actives went back a long time ago. It would be an interesting comparison with the Graham Audio LS6F powered by a Hegel H190 😊

QotD: I consider my HiFi to be furniture, for example I use the IKEA Stockholm TV unit as my "HiFi rack". Pretty stuff on top, ugly stuff and cables tucked away. I prefer the look of standmount speakers without grills on modern-minimal stands. For me there's a trade-off between quality and looks (hence being single, ha!!!).

I myself have rogue Cronus magnum 2 driving ls6 stand mount at 100 wpc on kt88 kr which I love for the 3d imaging tubes provide. I have been pondering a ldf ncse at 75 wpc or a Hegel like what you have in this room. Do SS state really add something to this speaker or should I stick with tubes?

Turns out they do: less than half the price of the latter.
My floor standers only sounded superb after installing 30 bass traps in my listening room. Six traps are tuned pressure types and the rest are velocity broad band types. Sadly the traps cost more than the speakers.

Mucking about with DSP such as Dirac Live seems wrong to me. Altering the signal sent to the speakers to correct room acoustics is covering up the symptoms without attacking the route cause of the room acoustic problems.
don't see any problem with the one SC as a reference. You know them and they are bloody good.. And if people want something similar they can get the Proac DB1.. As a DB1 owner i can say that the revolution is not extreme, but it is a refined one SC :) The one thing that impress me every time i sitt down and listen is the unholy bass respons the DB1 produce.. THAT is a key change from the one SC :)

I had some good demos from my local Richer sounds (swiss cottage, excellent team) and after trying Marantz and few other I liked Cambridge Audio 81 amplifier and B&W 603s
The biggest concern I have now is that.. The room it's going is very small and strange shape what would be your advice? I do really like the sound when I had the demo.. the guys at Richer sounds even opened the shop early to set up a demo in hardfloor area !

It is a unique design. As far as I recall, they need to be quite far out in the room as an omni design 😊
@A British Audiophile On the contrary. Although they use the rear wall as reflection, the near wall position enhances bass output as most speakers do without getting muddy or boomy. They have an almost di-pole open midrange that is pretty amazing!
My wife would infer that a standpoint on a stand is not impressive enough. I used to love them but I’d rather have a floor stander and not have to explain the advantages of stand mounts. Love those classic brands with their own sounds and pride of ownership.

Seven years ago I had the chance to listen to the bigger brother, the 5/8. And in over 40 years in hifi I think I never enjoyed it more listening to music from a hifi System. The only downsidefor me was the price. Sadly, because the sound quality was really something special.

I went from a Naim setup with Chartwell LS3/5As to a Luxman LX-380 tube amp powering DeVore Fidelity O/93s along with a Terminator and innuos zen mk3. Huge improvement in all aspects with soundstage top of the list.

They’re is no way to tell but to try but the A-S1200 should be able to drive them okay 😊
My objection against stand mount speakers are the stand mounts themselves. Usually they’re too low, 60 cm on average, they’re ugly and they’re far too expensive as well. One has to be very lucky to find affordable stands which have the right height, the correct support in terms of the size of the surfaces on which one has to put the bookshelf speakers on, the stability of the stands as a whole and all that finalised in a beautiful design which can carry the approval of the beauty committee as well as approved by the budget committee. Those were the reasons for me to go for floor standing speakers and as expected they passed both committees with ease!

A well known reference is essential as a control which you have achieved with your trusty ProAcs. In a way these floorstanders remind me of the accoustic controlled classic Kef 104 / 104ab which like the early LS3/5a designs of yesteryear featured the classic 19mm T27 tweeter.

With the advent of higher tech powered speakers with built in amplification/DSP/DAC/BT/streamer etc, isn’t the world of passive Hifi speakers and separates now just too inconvenient and lower performance, unless you spend a fortune? Its nice to have the ability to tweak or go the nostalgia route with vintage speakers, receivers and turntables etc, but bang for buck, the level of performance, compact footprint, ease of installation and convenience makes anything else seem pointless?
I guess it is horses for courses 😊

I really don't understand the comparison to your tiny stand mounts. They differ in design and size. Physical size has the most relevance in speaker sound.
Physical size is only one factor that differs between speakers. It is relevant but not necessarily the most relevant factor factor in determining a speakers sound.

The stands you put the stand mounts on are always unattractive, the only stands I've ever seen that were nice looking are the ones for Wilson's Tune Tot. In my living room, I have floor-standing speakers that were chosen as much for their look as their sound. In my small listening room where I have no space to move speakers out from the wall I've placed, on the wall speakers, and to my surprise, they sound beyond good and look nice.

Number of reasons Ian. You can’t just system quality through another system. It would require professional mics and equipment to do it to a reasonable standard. There are copyright infringement issues.
