I personally think the 8mm is a pretty cool lens that can double as an ultra fast prime when used with FISHEYE compensation mode in OM-D cameras enabled. Shame that this feature can only be used in still mode (and in jpg only as RAW is still in full fisheye mode). Let me know what you think!

Do you know if here is an Adobe correction setting for Fisheye compensation for the Oly 8mm? I’ve used a Canon fisheye setting on it before and it did a reasonable job of straightening, but not quite perfect. I would love to use the compensation in Raw mode in camera.
Keep in mind, with fish eye correction you cannot use a lot of the other functions in the olympus camera such as Live ND shooting, live composite photography, burst photography, bracketing, HDR, multiple exposure, keystone compensation, digital teleconverter, movie recording, [C-AF], [C-AFb], [C-AF+TR], and [C-AF+TRb] AF modes, [e-Portrait] and art filter picture modes, the custom self-timer, and High Res Shot.
I own this FE lens. Super close focusing ability with fast aperture makes it an amazing product. I hope the "defishify" option makes it to all Olympus cameras, not just restricted to the Em1 markII.

I have been looking for a lens that is very fast and wide to use in dark cathedrals and caves. I think this might be the one. The Loretto chapel spiral staircase and Carlsbad caverns here in New Mexico are on my list to test. Thanks for the comprehensive test.
A great lens. A lot of people seem to struggle with ultra-wides beyond 24mm. Heck, I even know people who think that 24mm is too wide. But for those of us who are ultra-wide junkies, a 1.8 fisheye is manna from heaven. I do have one question about it though - when using the in body fisheye compensation what is the new angle of view? It must drop below 180°, but how much? Somewhere in the 140° to 160° range would be brilliant, but if it drops into the 110° to 120° range then there are alternatives to consider, such as the Laowa 7.5mm f2 which has a 110° diagonal. I own the Canon 11-24mm f4L which gets to 120° at 11mm, which is incredibly useful, but there have been times I wished it went wider.
There's a lot of limitations with the in camera fisheye compensation, one being you can't shoot raw, can't do bracketing, live composite,etc. I think it has to do with the load the correction places on the processor. But besides that, I do love this lens as well, perfect for vlogging.
Indeed, this is a vlogging lens ahha in my view. I know it's a specialist lens and really and mainly for creative photography and underwater stuff which is important to have that 1.8. But the compensation feature gives a 'secondary' use for this lens.

I may be wrong as I think someone did correct me that only the later cameras have the compensation mode i.e. EM1 II , EM1 X and the new EM5 III. Excellent review as always. Now I’m in deep dilemma between 8mm and 7-14 for travel + landscape. [For Me] 8mm: Cheaper Better used for Night Hassle to Defish Soft edges 7-14mm: Not requiring De-Fish Sharp edge to edge Flexible zooms (but I guess 7mm is 95% of the length) Please advise.
haha, well, I use 7-14 for its versatility though at 2 stops slower, Tracy has the 8mm and she loves it. I do also consider it too since it's lighter and smaller and can be a great vlog lens! Defishing for photos can be done in camera but in JPG only but you can get third party plugin for LR and also FCP if you wish but just not as efficient.
Have you looked at the Laowa 7.5mm f/2 MFT Lens? It is full manual but it is rectilinear and even smaller. But I do know it's a hassle dealing with manual focus and exposure. It is an interesting lens nonetheless.
I haven't but now you mentioned it and I will have a look :) Manual focus lenses will usually have a smaller body due to the lack of internal motor mechanism. I guess it'll be very similar to my 7-14mm 2.8 Pro but a stop faster :) Thanks!

Cheers Marius, well, exactly as you said, for RAW photographers, Olympus gives you the original unmolested file, so you can de-fish the RAW in software of your choice. If you are keen, DxO’s ViewPoint is pretty darn amazing in de-fishing RAW files, which when I combined with PhotoLab4, I literally can work with these files pretty easily. LR hasn’t got a de-fish option but mind you, de-fishing will lose quite a bit of pixels.

Cheers mate! I like the cap lens but the only downside is that it's a f8 aperture and only works in good daylight to be frank. I do like the lightweight and super crazy wafer thin which means that you can slip it in any bag! Thanks and I may try it in one episode :)

Any way you could compare the quality of a picture between the 7-14mm f2.8 and the 8mm in ultrawide mode and tell me the difference ? The weight of the 7-14 is not a problem for me but been f1.8 could be useful.
In short, both have very high image quality and very sharp. 7-14 has the flexibility if you need to switch focal lengths frequently. Though 8mm is fixed but with much wider aperture and better for low light. If you use ultra wide a lot for your work, you can get the 8mm and a 12mm separately and that compensate the focal lengths from the 7-14mm I use the zoom more for my wedding work only because it's flexible.

Unfortunately that there's no built-in option to De-Fisheye an image. You have use external plugin or software. I do use DXO ViewPoint which does that.
Red35 Photography the cheap Samsung is actually pretty good and represents fantastic value. That said I think you use the fisheye for the fish eye look and if you have everything centred correctly the pictures turns out great. I always say the fisheye lens is all about symmetry in the image. Of course the Olympus lens is certainly more versatile, just comes down to how much money you want to spend
I wouldn’t hesitate to get the 8/1.8 fisheye if the built-in fisheye compensation feature within the em1.2 output a 20.3 MP raw image with the correction. But I think that is jpeg only. So I will stick with my Samyang 7.5mm FE and de-fish in post.
You can correct images but video is different. You can to certain extend but needs a 3rd party plugin for that and it can be very heavy for computer to correct. Photos is much easier, you can use Nik Software and very effective for image correction.

Thanks Mike! Well, I must say that all (from my own experience) Olympus Pro lenses have great IQ. I couldn't see CA in jpg and RAW but there's a possibility that Olympus may have applied some correction in camera but of course no one knows but they are sharp so unlikely that it's been corrected (corrected CA images will still a little soft but this is tack sharp!)
I just ordered mine 7.5mm mkii 7artisans lens this week, it's in the mail. i've been looking at wide angle lenses the 8mm looked nice but $1300 cad for this lens vs $189 cad for the artisans was a no brainer.

Prashanth G Nair generally defishing will lose pixels because it’s ‘stretching’ the image. 8mm 1.8 is great for Astro because of the brighter aperture but if you defish the images, you may lose some pixels.
absolutely the sharpest - edge to edge. this fisheye is incredible, and worth the money. the wide pro zoom, ? my favorite wide zoom. very intense colors on both. so sharp.....at open aperture, never mind stopping down. lol. recommended for anyone with the money to buy. lol. j.

LOVE your channel and of course this video. However, not sure about the comparison with the M.Zuiko 7-14 ("similar results")? On balance, there seems to be a lot more to love with that zoomer. Both are dreadfully expensive but very good, as you say. Guess I'm not a fisheye fan.
I wasn't comparing to the 7-14, more like comparing to what I was using them for. You can't really compare apples and oranges but I was hoping to use it for one thing, vlogging/filming myself while walking etc.. The fisheye is pretty darn good for that and also at the wide end, very useable and if you don't like the fisheye look, there's an option on EM1 (if you have one) that will correct it and make it a rectalinear lens.
@@Red35Photography Oh, I understand now, and no offence intended. Unfortunately (?) I have the M5 Mark 2 and the little M10 ii and these do not have the fisheye compensation feature. Even so, the adjustments can be done in Lightroom manually or by choosing the GoPro lens profile (believe it or not). There is always a way, right? Hi Gary, thanks a lot! I don't think it will at this moment in time and EM5 II is not supported. however, there are LR plugin that allows you to 'defish' an image.
We actually listed all our kits at the end of our video. But for your information, we shot everything with Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark II and various lenses, mostly Panasonic Leica 25mm 1.4 or Olympus 12-40 2.8 Pro, sometimes with other lenses, mostly Olympus too.

I use the 8mm fisheye, as my primary underwater lens. Just love the results I'm getting.

But you can compose and shoot using the fisheye compensation. Then go home and postprocess the raw file. What you see is what you get - just better!

Do you have experience mit Fisheye Hemi Plugin for Lightroom with this lens?
Thanks mate! No I haven't tried Hemi Plugin, is it good? I've been using DXO ViewPoint to 'De-Fisheye' an image but now I can get it in camera which is good.
LOVE your channel and of course this video. However, not sure about the comparison with the M.Zuiko 7-14 ("similar results")? On balance, there seems to be a lot more to love with that zoomer. Both are dreadfully expensive but very good, as you say. Guess I'm not a fisheye fan.
I wasn't comparing to the 7-14, more like comparing to what I was using them for. You can't really compare apples and oranges but I was hoping to use it for one thing, vlogging/filming myself while walking etc.. The fisheye is pretty darn good for that and also at the wide end, very useable and if you don't like the fisheye look, there's an option on EM1 (if you have one) that will correct it and make it a rectalinear lens.
@@Red35Photography Oh, I understand now, and no offence intended. Unfortunately (?) I have the M5 Mark 2 and the little M10 ii and these do not have the fisheye compensation feature. Even so, the adjustments can be done in Lightroom manually or by choosing the GoPro lens profile (believe it or not). There is always a way, right? Thanks again for the video here and your great channel as well.
As just an amateur, If I own 7-14 already i probably shouldn't purchase the 8mm. Seems to do the same thing...

Hi Gary, thanks a lot! I don't think it will at this moment in time and EM5 II is not supported. however, there are LR plugin that allows you to 'defish' an image.

We actually listed all our kits at the end of our video. But for your information, we shot everything with Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark II and various lenses, mostly Panasonic Leica 25mm 1.4 or Olympus 12-40 2.8 Pro, sometimes with other lenses, mostly Olympus too.
