@Slaphead....and I'm glad Rocky also had a good life post boxing, after being so badly let down by the referee in the rubber match. A sleep-deprived baboon would have been a better referee.
This x 2. I can't believe how hard Graziano was still fighting after absorbing all that punishment. Tony Zale basically had to knock him dead to get him out of there. Both of these men were men of steel. Not just Tony Zale.
Another amazing video! What struck me harder than anything else about this story, is that his mother, after his father's death, never remarried. Two of the greatest Middleweights of all time, Graziano and Zale. Three of the greatest fights of all time, Graziano and Zale. The only fighter Rocky seriously trained for, Zale. Rocky was a street fighter, who threw the hardest right hand in Middleweight History. I heard about Zale from my Father, who grew up in Chicago, used to watch Zale train at a CYO club there. According to my father Tony on a typical training day would knock out 5 Heavyweights, no joke, he was the MAN OF STEEL. Everybody knows Zale was Polish, but Al Weil an old time manager and promoter at Madison Square Garden told me Zale's mother made the best Italian food he ever ate, and that she was part Italian...

I'd read about the Zale v Graziano trilogy, that was pretty much all I knew about Zale, but after just 20 mins I know a whole lot more. What a fighter, a man of steel indeed, win or lose he gave it all. I really love his guys spirit...he gets stopped after his opponent lands 37 unanswered punches and complains, 'a man should be allowed to die for his title'. I like some of his other quotes too.... 'That's the trouble with people today, everybody wants to get, nobody wants to give'. Its a real shame he lost 4 years, probably around his prime, to the war, surely he'd have achieved so much more if that wasn't the case. Great video, thanks Rich!
I never saw the third fight of that trilogy, one of the most famous in middleweight history. Another ref might have stopped the fight with Graziano falling over as he was wiping his gloves, but Cavalier had a "go out on your shield' attitude. Great stuff Rich, as always.

Tony Zale! You truly are the Fight Historian because you cover the fighters so often not spoken about but we’re legends in their own right. Zale Graziano was like Gatti Ward before there was a Gatti Ward!
I love this channel. I have been a boxing fan for 53 years. Boxed a little while myself, but moved to another state that didn’t have boxing. I kept my heavy bag and speed bag, but it was never the same. We had a couple Junior Olympic Champions come out of our little town of 3,000 people, before I moved. I’ve have watched a few boxing channels but they were always hit and miss deals. This place is the Champion of the World on the history of this sweet science of pugilists.
Great Post. As a Kid I Always heard and read about Zale and his Titanic Trilogy with Rocky Graziano. I loved Rocky, his personality and the fact that he's a New Yorker like myself. I admire and respect Zale and Knew of his Steel mill background. Like many Fighter's he's overcome a lot
I missed the last few episodes, for some reason. Watching them (great ones, as usual), I went over your body of work, Rich, took a look at all your past videos, available here. I'm really amazed. You have, for anyone curious of it, a great, extremely well presented, richly diversified panorama of boxing history, here. Absolutely amazing work! About Tony Zale, I think he's so underrated today. My hunch is, at his best, before the war, he would have beat many of the guys we consider great that came after him. He's in the top crop of mw in history. A big P.S. Have you tried to send some sample of your stuff to ESPN for instance, or to some other well financed boxing outlet? Thanks, Frank. I really appreciate your kind words. I was in publishing for awhile but stopped. I enjoy videos more and the reach dwarfs anything in print media. We'll see where the channel goes, I'm loving UA-cam so far and the channel has grown beyond what I expected.
God that brutal beating he gave Poor graziano showed his savage power you can see how hard he hits when he was landing those crushing shots his body is just made of steel I never seen him fight or of him until right now again brother beautiful video
Yet another great documentary. When you mention Zale, it is always linked with Graziano. Puncher versus chin. Age versus youth. I know Rocky and Jake LaMotta were good friends, but I would have loved to have seen that match up!
Fantastic Documentary here RTFH If memory serves ( I am half way through the video as I type this ), Zale was discovered in a nursing home with Dementia and staff had no idea who he was. I believe he had lost the anility to talk until someone said “Graziano”. Zale reacted immediately Keep em coming RTFH. Absolutely Fantastic
He became very shy because of the guilt he felt thinking he had been responsible for the death of his father. He never really worked his way through that thought but it made him who he was.
Rich you have brought back memories of boxers I grew up watching reading and following them on tv when they showed there matches..great times back then…
1913!!! Brought back to life amazing, he really did look like he was made from metal, blows my mind these fighter's with a full back story, credit Richie 👍
The elders in Brooklyn Shannon the joke Briggs for one lol talking madness about an island for "fighting" it should be like this real fighting but we all know it won't be lol , he gave hell to him 👊
If they weren't in love with gang war I'd be tempted 100k to fight Briggs is he mental lol probably, it would be cruelty but hey they did it too back in the day.
Zale was going to play himself in the movie "Somebody Up There Likes Me", the story of Rocky Graziano. Unfortunately, Zale couldn't learn how to do movie punches where you miss the other guy but make it look like you hit him. He knocked out Paul Newman (who played Rocky) and they recast the Zale part with Court Shepard, another former middleweight who was an expert in playing fighters in movies and resembled Tony Zale. Shepard appeared in a lot of boxing movies like "Champion" where he fought Kirk Douglas and "Right Cross" where he fought Ricardo Montalban among many others.
Another outstanding documentary Rich. I knew a little about Tony Zale and his trilogy with Rocky Graziano however there is so much more I learned from watching this wonderful documentary. I love your channel so much. For me it takes me back to my days in the 1980s and 1990s when I read Boxing News weekly. I look forward to your next documentaries. Look may you continue to showcase your brilliant work.
An incredibly tough boxer forged like so many like him from a timeless era. There were some greats from the 40’s and 50’s like Zale, Graziano and La Motta that represent my favorite era of boxing. Thanks for sharing Rich!
Nothing like being around these Hall of fame Boxers ole timers I still have an autograph black white picture of him God bless them all .The Jersey crew I spent time with Charlie Wallace , Tippy Larkin great guys
Rich, I've run out of adjectives that describe the absolutely fantastic work you do. Those color pictures at the beginning were beautiful. I can't wait to see what's next from you.
I’m a massive fan of your channel very detailed videos and I can watch them all night, Tony zale was a great fighter R.I.P. Please do a Jersey Joe Walcott video, I know he was heavyweight champ but unfortunately not a lot of people know his story he started out at 165lbs and ended up being heavyweight champion after 5 or 6 attempts at the time being the eldest at 37! Suffered through the Great Depression and segregation working job to job to feed his massive family. And one of the most iconic scenes in boxing with him being the ref, Ali vs Liston 2 the phantom punch, so much to mention I’d be here all night literally. I box myself and he’s one of the first boxers I ever saw fight, it was against joe Louis the first fight where he was robbed and dropped joe twice and was dancing around the ring throwing bombs over 15 rounds. I loved his style and footwork and it inspired me to box him and Ali. I ended up with 25 fights as an amateur lost 7 I’m now on the way to having my pro debut hopefully this year. Anyway I did a little research and his record was broken on the night I was born 5/11/94 by big George foreman vs Micheal moorer to break his record at 45 years old. I also have the same initials JW ( but his real name was Arnold Raymond cream. So I’d really really appreciate if you could make a video there’s nothing detailed on UA-cam at all it’s a shame. R.I.P champ.
Another great video Rich. This is entertaining and educational for people like me who have not heard of many of the Boxers u cover on this channel. Great job my friend 👏 👍 🙌
I think it was 1984, Sean Curtain then the head of the Chicago CYO invited me to the CYO box offs is when I met Tony Zale and Angelo Dundee at a Polish resturant in Chicago after the event. Sean Curtain was a great guy.
Great Post what a tough man he was working in the steel Mills after retiring then coming back to eventually win the world title losing it then coming back when he was past his best and producing that brutal knockout of rocky I think the phrase teak tough was made for Tony zale .on top of a Great career what an upstanding decent man served his country during his prime and gave back to the kids as a trainer for no money you don't get people like that anymore.
Nice one Rich. Glad to see you shine a light on a little spoken about champion. Lovely mini doc, very much appreciated. I've only seen clips of the first 2 Graciano fights. Terrific stuff buddy. Bless up 👊
The right to the body followed by the left hook to the jaw combination was called " the Tony Zale" by an old time pro I once met. The knockout of Graziano illustrates that.
Tony Zale always looked old, even when he was young haha. It’s absolutely criminal the first 2 Graziano fights were never recorded. A massive loss to boxing
Thanks for showing us real "fighters"...men who paid their "dues"...unlike "fighters" of today with 10 fights under their belt...and their already world "champions"...total farce!!! Great job...Thanks!

Thanks, Dan. Yeah, Zale & Graziano are forever linked.
Great story. Great narrator!!
Thank you, ratdad48
Out of all the fights that weren't recorded Graziano Zale 1 and 2 I wish I could have watched
Fantastic Documentary here RTFH
If memory serves ( I am half way through the video as I type this ), Zale was discovered in a nursing home with Dementia and staff had no idea who he was.
I believe he had lost the anility to talk until someone said “Graziano”. Zale reacted immediately
Keep em coming RTFH. Absolutely Fantastic
Thanks, C T O. I didn't come across that "Graziano" anecdote but that's interesting.
Another great video. You do a great job on these Good on you !!
Hey thanks, Andrew
That is such an unbelievably tragic event to happen to such a young child.
Imagine. In the back of your mind, you would blame yourself for the rest of your life for that happening to your father.
@@marcoslaureano5562 It was definitely a cross he didn't need to bear if his mother had told him what had happened.
He became very shy because of the guilt he felt thinking he had been responsible for the death of his father. He never really worked his way through that thought but it made him who he was.
It’s similar to Barney Ross and his father
Alright I am home with my dinner and finally can watch this presentation thank you
Thank u for this videos, they are great!
My pleasure, Boxe Island
Great post ! Keep em coming Rich
Thanks, Andrew, will do
Rich you have brought back memories of boxers I grew up watching reading and following them on tv when they showed there matches..great times back then…
Glad to have done that, Keith. Enjoy the old greats.
Great work once again I was waiting for someone to make a video on Tony zeal
Thank you, trench officer
Thanks Rich, I met him when I was a kid many years ago.
Sure thing, bookah
Amazing fighter! Awesome bio!👊
Thanks, Monty.
I appreciate your support, L N. I learned a lot about Zale I didn't know as well.
An incredibly tough boxer forged like so many like him from a timeless era. There were some greats from the 40’s and 50’s like Zale, Graziano and La Motta that represent my favorite era of boxing. Thanks for sharing Rich!
Sure thing, oncall21
Rich, I enjoy your channel immensly! Thanks so much for remembering these wonderful champions.
My pleasure, Lee. Thanks.
Hey thanks, testcyp, more on the way.
Always such a joy to learn of a new boxer. Thank you Rich for making me aware of another incredible boxer from times past. Salute!
My pleasure, A A H

Sure thing, ucdcrush
Another incredible documentary. Great fighter
Thanks, Ashley
Thanks, JordanW994...I'll add in Jersey Joe to the list, it may be awhile but I'll get to him.
Thank you, massively appreciated keep up the good work rich 👏
Another great one Rich! You are the man!
Thanks, Karl.
You should have over a million subscribers. This channel is offensively underrated.
Thanks for the support, ThatOneGuy
A smashing upload. I enjoyed it very much. Thanks
Thanks for the support, Andy
Another great video Rich. This is entertaining and educational for people like me who have not heard of many of the Boxers u cover on this channel. Great job my friend 👏 👍 🙌
My pleasure, Carlos. Zale was truly one of the old greats.
Bless up 👊
Much appreciated, Nick, thanks.
Rich your the best💯🥊🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Hey thanks, adrian.
The right to the body followed by the left hook to the jaw combination was called " the Tony Zale" by an old time pro I once met. The knockout of Graziano illustrates that.
Great Stuff Rich--- I never realized what a great Champ Zale was..
Thanks, John. Zale was an inspirational great.
Terrific work as always. Fantastic voice over and editing, not to mention the amount of research involved.
Thanks so much, Sir Lloyd
Tony Zale always looked old, even when he was young haha. It’s absolutely criminal the first 2 Graziano fights were never recorded. A massive loss to boxing
AGREE 100 %
Growing up in the Great Depression was tough. It showed. My Dad did. By the time he was 21 he had mustered OUT of the Navy after four years!
Another great one rich God bless you brother. 🙏
Likewise, Felix, thank you.
What a great job and fighter. Tip top.
Thanks for showing us real "fighters"...men who paid their "dues"...unlike "fighters" of today with 10 fights under their belt...and their already world "champions"...total farce!!! Great job...Thanks!
My pleasure, Jim, thanks for the support.
Dang, just a different breed back then
Mr. Rich with another banger. Yes sir!
Right on, Jason
Along with Ray Robinson and Marvin Hagler Tony Zale is my favorite middleweight champion was one of the most deadly body punchers of all time didn y know he fought Billy Conn untill this video and seem s to have made good account of himself good show nice to see some one do a video on this great middleweight Champ
So underated!
That was a great story 👏. Thanx for sharing.
My pleasure, browll9
What a guy,, what a life,,
