What a great man Mr Vingo was. I grew in Woodlawn, NY in the Bronx. It was a dominant Irish area and still pretty much is to this day. The street we lived on Oneida Ave had a deli where all the old school Irish amd Italian guys all hung out. Carmine was one of them. Wishing I knew then what I know now about him. He was a generous man who loved kids and watching us play all different sports.
He called me "Little Bambino" because I was like 5 years younger than all the other kids I played baseball with, but, I hung with them better than the guys their own age.
Carmine used to always tell me "Don't let anyone ever mistreat you, talk down to you, or try to take advantage of you as long as you live.
God, I miss those days. RIP to all the true old school warriors of the Bronx who raised me. Youre all missed

In 1976, Muhammad Ali was interviewed by Howard Cosell on ABC's Wide World of Sports. He said of Marciano "Rocky Marciano was tougher than Joe Frazier and he'd be my toughest opponent." Muhammad also said "He was better than Frazier and you know what Frazier did to me." That's good enough for me.

It was a competitive era, yet people still say everyone are bums just by judging digital stats and weight. They would put a random guy 10-20 pounds heavier than Rocky Marciano to beat him and that guy would still miserably fail, possibly even die if Rocky Marciano wasn't so polite.

Nobody gives Marciano's conditioning the credit it deserved.
Tyson threw an average of 30+ punches per round, Frazier 50+, Marciano 80+
He was also a very good puncher. You rarely see a puncher with power putting up those numbers.
Also, the _"Awkwardness"_ that people attribute to Marciano is due to the fact that he didn't fight like a boxer. At all.
But that's like saying a mixed martial artist doesn't know how to fight, or is awkward.
The guy seriously looks like Khabib Nurmagomedov if he had to _"ground & pound"_ standing.
He would physically stick to people and fight from the clinch for nearly the entire fight.
Anyone who has wrestled knows how exhausting that is, let alone your average boxer.
That's not even to mention the fact that he uses his head like a wrestler in the clinch.
It's almost like his style was to muscle people around with a system of dirty boxing he knew how to fight and defend himself from, and would naturally make him very difficult to finish from the clinch... since he's already clinched.

Ezra Charles hit Rocky with everything he had, his best and most powerful punch, on his chin, and knocked Rocky down on the ring floor for exactly 2 seconds.
Rocky got up and shook it off like it was nothing. You know that had to have an enormous effect on Ezra after that. He was probably thinking to himself

Vingo was his "TOUGHEST" fight? Come on!...Let's be serious. He had to face guys like Walcott that - basically - BASHED Rocky for thirteen rounds. Joe threw EVERYTHING he had on Marciano and yet Rocky withstood it all ... with blood dripping all over from his face, head and chest ... all that just to sledgehammer Walcott with one blow when there was ...what?... 30 seconds of the fight left? - I don't think Carmine Vingo was the "toughest" opponent for him, unless... UNLESS we're talking about the psychological blowback he had to face, when he realized he almost killed the guy.
    PS.
Goddamnit! - these men were KILLERS on the Ring! Today they are just...who the hell even are they? ...SHOWMEN on steroids?? I cannot see ONE of those new - "modern" - Boxers nowaday, who could (or WOULD) take the punishment of the sort Marciano took from Walcott - or (far less!) - taking it ... and then STILL WINNING THE FIGHT BY KNOCKING THE OTHER GUY OUT - leaving him "sleeping" on the canvas.

@Karelin ...you mean the steroids "champions" that fight once a year?? :D ...yeeahhmNO! Guys like Walcott had a way longer reach than him, they did all they could and still couldn't knock Marciano out. After a while that long reach will be only detrimental to you, because once you have a longer reach it doesn't matter if it is 2 inches longer, 12 or twenty. You think Tyson had a long reach or was in some manner or the other "physically superior"? :) In close quarters they're gonna have their ribs bashed in - Marciano knew it, Frazier knew it, Tyson knew - their styles were quite similar in fact.
