    t's time to go back in the water!! The day before launching, Elements is lifted up into the sling to give us a full afternoon of painting while we reach the spots previously covered by jackstands and straps. Come 9 am the next morning though, we're ready to go!
    Conditions, although rainy, stayed fair enough for us to get in the water and to our slip the next morning, but then it turned quite windy and we didn't get much done for the rest of the day. The next morning was beautiful though...so time to put on our sails!
    As an extra bonus, in the fall Precision Sails had taken measurements for us to get a brand new main, and when we returned from Asia it was at the marina waiting for us. Since we couldn't raise it while on the hard, this was our first opportunity to get it up and see what it looked like.
    Enough time on the hard, let's get this boat back in the water!!
    Much love from The Azores!

    Couldn’t believe you unwrapped the coil of battens on the boat, I was waiting for the splash and subsequent “oh crap!” as a batten went overboard! Nice video as always!

      Yeh, I thought my comment might get taken like that. I just meant that it's fun seeing Jessica trying some new stuff...including the gratuitous ones, too. It's hard doing these videos and keeping them from all looking the same. Gotta encourage the innovation.

    I've been following you guys for quite some time now and thoroughly enjoy your vlog. When you ordered your headsail from Precision Sails, I decided to check them out and had a great discussion with Ron and got a quote for all 3 of our sail (yes, we are a cutter rig as well). Precision had a great 25% sale last winter so we took advantage of the savings. We held off on taking measurements until this spring and just received the sails this week. The process was easy and they helped us every step of the way with email and telephone consultations. We will be installing them over this weekend and are quite excited to see them on the boat. Happy sailing and keep up the excellent vlogs!

    I love foggy days, especially when I'm moving on land. It's like traveling through a magical world, when the fog lifts enough for you to see a previously unseen valley or farm. A little more scary when underway, but still magical.

    • @mattjohnson6716
      @mattjohnson6716 5 років тому

      I agree. As much as being in the middle of an ocean makes you feel remote, put a veil of fog around, and it feels like you're on a totally different planet than anyone else.

    • @earlklinestub2167

      matt johnson Hey Matt. This is how I stumbled across your UA-cam channel. I'll Try to keep it short. I live in a small town in Iowa. I own my own small business , so I have flexible hours. Our local school was looking for bus drivers. I decided I'd drive school bus part time and I also had the opportunity to drive my grandkids route. ( nothing more of a tear jerker than pulling up to your granddaughters house on the first day of school and grandpa is driving. I still can't tell that story without crying. We didn't tell her either). I digress. So I did a UA-cam search on bus driving and I came across a fantastic UA-cam channel called "Indiana Jack". He is an over the road truck driver and he also videos his adventures across the United States. Similar to what you two do but on a sail boat and with way better scenery. So in the UA-cam recommendations was MJ Sailing. 😀😀😀. My guess is the truck driving videos are close enough in the UA-cam algorithm to bring up an recommended video of your channel 👍👍. But this is the bad news. Watching your videos I feel like I've spent to much of my life chasing the wrong dream 😰. My 35 th wedding anniversary is coming up in October. Maybe we will buy a sail boat. I have an 8.5 foot plastic pond prowler two man bass boat . What could be so different. 😳😳. PS I'm a dog kind of a guy too and you now have me looking at cats to get too. Thanks.

    • @mattjohnson6716

      It's from a long ago grounding in a hurricane. Since it's is in the diesel tank, it's hard to replace the panel, and not worth the effort. We did replace the forward keel which was way more dented from the same event.

    Hey, you guys have an excellent channel. Would really like to see how you have your outboard attached to the deck. I placed mine on the pulpit bars and really don't like it there. 30' boat with too much at the aft end, points the bow in the air.

    • @mattjohnson6716
      @mattjohnson6716 5 років тому +1

      It's not attached at all fancy. I just used a few lengths of ropes and hitched it to the mast pulpit. Luckily, the pulpit is crazy strong and I don't fear it breaking off too much. It was only supposed to be temporary, but it's been there for about a year now :)

    Hey Guys, the boat looks great. Is there a reason why you haven't changed to a folding prop besides money? They are expensive and I guess getting more than a 1/2 knot gain in speed makes it hard to justify. BUT, a 1/2 knot makes a big difference when crossing oceans.

    • @MJSailing
      @MJSailing  5 років тому

      We had a Maxprop on the last boat, and while reverse was great and it was just as good motoring, we never really felt the difference in speed (maybe a 1/4 knots) vs the old fixed prop sailing.... You can even trick the Maxprop into staying in the fixed position to do a back to back. So we did try to find the benefit.
      When we got to Elements, we decided the money would be better spent elsewhere. Even if I had the cash right now I'd go for a code zero or cruising spinnaker for light winds where we are weak. I think I'd get better results vs a new prop.

    • @mattjohnson6716
      @mattjohnson6716 5 років тому

      I'd love a ball bearing car set-up, but will resist the urge to spend money and just continue with the needed exercise. The new batten cars do help with reefing off the wind to drag the sail down :)

    I watched your videos about Precision Sails and felt that, even though the sails are made in China, they were reputable. I'd say that the people I've dealt with have been nice. But because they didn't translate the measurements to the loft correctly, the pennant offset for my new jib was made too short. That was in March 2019.
    It's the middle of June and I have no replacement sail. I have no Return to Vendor authorization. I've had no email communication telling me when they will build my replacement sail, even though all of the above have been promised over the phone for two months...
    Any chance you guys could give them a nudge?

    When I worked with Ron at Precision sails, I made sure to tell him that I watched your channel. There are other channels that they publish on their site that I don't enjoy watching, but I knew the name drop (even if a tiny bit) could help you guys out. I ended up NOT ordering from Presicion. I just can't get over the fact that they claim to be North America based with their designers working remotely, etc. etc. but after everything is said and done, they outsource the materials and labor to China. It's just a cheap cop-out to get slave labor type rates with their products being made by a third party. I honestly had the BEST experience with Precision, but ended up buying 3 sails from a sail loft based in South Carolina that actually produces the sails themselves instead of out-sourcing.
    Either way, your sails look great, and you can't beat the "price".

    • @williamlunde

      Interesting! I bought sails from Precision Sails, and they told me that considering that my boat is located on Lake Zurich in Switzerland, they would suggest having their rep office in China produce the sails, since that would make more sense in terms of shipping to Switzerland. I guess that is just marketing technique to hide the fact that they are all outsourced to China. I am not a fan of this deception if it is true. Anyway, I still have to try them out and haven't put them on my boat just yet. They only arrived a few days ago. They look well made, but I will have to wait and see how they fit on my boat. Thanks for your comment.

    • @DialedN_07
      @DialedN_07 5 років тому

      @@williamlunde It's not that their rep office is in China. Their reps work remotely all over the country and if I'm not mistaken, all over the world. However, they send the dimensions in and build in China. I'm 100% positive you will find a Made in China tag on your sails

    • @williamlunde
      @williamlunde 5 років тому

      @@DialedN_07 Yes, there was a "Made in China" tag on my sails. Maybe I should not have said "rep office", but used the term "company they have an outsource agreement with" instead. Talking to one of the Precision Sail guys on the phone, when he mentioned that they would be produced in China, I mentioned the company "Far East Sailmakers", and he cringed. However, one has to wonder if they use their services since they are an OEM manufacturer. Anyhow, the most important to me is that the sails are what I expected in terms of quality and performance. The price including shipping to Switzerland is certainly a savings compared to sails being made in Switzerland. I will find out in the next few days when I finally mount them on my rig. Cheers.

    Full battens are a really bad idea because they are dependent on very expensive and specialized parts to track up the mast and more importantly down again.... the vast majority of blue water cruisers have stayed with or returned to the more traditional sewn on sail hardware and partial battens but the new plastic battens are a plus that is the first choice for my boat over fiberglass battens that break, splintering and wearing our sail pockets.
    The older I get the more I feel I only know 2 things for certain..... 1- humans make mistakes and 2 - we're all going to die....
