  • When Airbus unveiled the A380plus study, there were hopes that the company could sway its largest A380-800 customer, Emirates, towards the study. However, Emirates stood firm and rejected the type. Instead, favour an aircraft like the A380neo, a re-engined type that would have better efficiency. This is why the Dubai-based carrier rejected the A380plus.

    The A380 Plus looks like it can be done as a retrofit on current A380 aircraft. Airbus has done retrofits on A320CO series aircraft, and Boeing retrofitted winglets onto 737NG aircraft, so, for a 4% efficiency savings, it would be worth the investment for Emirates since they will be flying the aircraft for many more years.

      Not really. Lot more than winglets. Other wing changes.

      @@johniii8147 They can add winglets. Like I said, Airbus has done retrofits on older aircraft, and so has Boeing.
      They don't have to do any structural changes, but just adding the winglets would make a difference in the current aircraft. They can certainly do that. I don't think Emirates wants to add more seats, but fuel saving retrofits would benefit them.

      @@sainnt Wont work on the 380 and would definitely require wing changes. Wouldn't be worth the expense anyway.

      @@johniii8147 4% fuel savings on over 100 aircraft is definitely worth the expense. The aircraft already has winglets, so they can be replaced with better designed winglets. Most airlines added new winglets to their older planes, and they saw savings.

    Third to comment, however I'm just perplexed why Airbus simply didn't upgrade the engines and do as Emirates requested instead of straying towards the A380plus. In a way I blame Airbus for the A380's downfall.

      Engines are roughly half the cost of an aircraft. Developing new engines to potentially sell 100 aircraft probabaly wouldn't have the same return as twinjets. Airbus doesn't have control over the engine manufacturing

      @gpierre90 11 місяців тому

      @maxwellallard7153 I know that there are engine manufacturers like GE, or Rolls or Pratt and Whitney, but Airbus could have tried and see if they could make a fuel efficient engine for the A380. Perhaps the same engine could also be used on other aircraft types.

    • @johniii8147

      Nothing to be perplexed about. Airbus doesn't' make engines and and RR was not interested in developing new engines for such a low volume aircraft with one customer interested. Engine Alliance was also already basically disbanded. It simply wasn't worth the investment.

    The A380 wing was designed for the larger 380 variants, which never happened.

    We may just get essentially an A380neo anyway. Though Rolls-Royce officially denies it currently, the _UltraFan_ technology demonstrator was designed to test technologies for a geared turbofan replacement for the Trent engine series, and one engine derived from the _UltraFan_ design could end up as a retrofit engine for Emirates' current A380's to extend the range of the plane.

    The plus shouldn’t have been just winglets it should’ve had more efficient and powerful engines to increase performance maybe the Trent xwb would’ve worked but I think emirates should add those split winglets to the a380

      You are right, what is it the king of. Just because it's big whoopi do. I'll take the Queen any day, which has earned her name. And what idiot designer would design something that big and not make a freight version of it. It's to late now the queen has more than got that covered, along with the 777.
