Going shorter on the fringe helps lighten my hair, which is dead straight and curl resistant, helps it hold a bit of a curl and show off the layering and avoids me looking like Moe of the three stooges. I didn’t think I could pull that off, but I was wrong. Also, I cut my own hair and use the texturising scissors as directed (and I also point cut) and also to keep the back in shape and tight to my head, which is so much easier when doing this on my own.
Haha! I guess I’ve had it wrong forever: I called it “The W!” Anyway, it surprised me to learn that nearly EVERYONE has this growth pattern in the nape! May as well use it to add more youthfulness and, hopefully, lengthen the look of my “shorter” neck! Thx, Justin!
😅 I have naturally curly hair. It kinda looks like I got one of those spiral perms 😊 from the 80's 😂. I have an oval face and I battle to find a good hairdresser that kan cut my hair properly. I really want a messy pixie Bob 😅 but I'm so scared the hairdresser is gonna cut it the same way you would straight hair. 😢
I quit all hairdressers. They just do what they always do totally ignoring what you say. I was a highly successful hairdresser for 35 years. I know hair & especially my hair. Not 1 hairdresser ever listened to me. I even brought in my finer-than-fine blending shears for them to use & they barely touched my super thick hair. I actually look better chopping it at home even tho I can't see the back & my arms don't twist to the right angle.
Thank you! This is excellent. Many years ago, I wanted to have my haircut when I went to Italy. So, instead of getting my hair cut before the trip, I kept it a little longer. It was the most amazing haircut. Essentially, all I had to do was shake out my hair after coming out of the shower and a little gel. When I asked my hairdresser to look at what was different, she said there was nothing! Maybe different shampoo! So, I began my search to understand texturizing and point cut. And, when COVID and a broken hip happened at the same time, I began practicing cutting my own hair. I watched videos and carefully practiced cutting my hair. I was one of those people who spent a lot of money on my hair. And, frankly, I really prefer my hair today! And, I especially appreciate this video. Thank you, again!
Its so so hard to find a stylist who knows how to do this type of cut right. My old stylist who retired would cut a V (similar to the M) in the back and it was fabulous. I've have to explain this so many times to different people over the years and it was like they had no idea what i was requesting - I was so excited to see you talking about this!
Great tips - I have been cutting my hair since the start of the pandemic - I find at 84 its very liberating. I can see that all the points you make are so true. One of the few good things about getting old [ there aren't many lol ] is you don't care about what people think anymore, so I snip away in the hope that one day I'll have that near perfect pixie x
I’m really curious about how you are managing cutting your own pixie. I am not at all pleased with what I’m paying big $$$ for and I’m now on my 4th stylist. I would love to get out of paying for something I’m not happy with, but I love the pixie length.
In 2019 I had my hair cut in a pixie style - it was the last one and yeha no more £100 every couple of months. I just go into the bathroom with my sharp pointy scissors and snip away [ not too much, start with about a quarter of an inch ] you need a mirror to hold and a large wall mirror to be able to check all the angles. I take into account the shape of my head and the way my hair grows. Something hairdressers never ever did for me ! As you grow in confidence you'll be amazed at how fantastic you'll feel. I wish you lots of luck and God Bless x@@Wellbaby94
Me, too! I get compliments all the time. Ladies, it’s not brain surgery. You can do this! And besides, go messy and no one knows if it’s perfect, anyway, right!? You’ll be fine after watching several YT videos.
I get my hair cut at a local beauty school and have very rarely ever been not happy with the results. I always ask for a razor cut and for a student who is interested in learning how to do one or who loves doing them. The instructors are always near to help, show, and advise. I tell them that I look at this as doing a service by providing them hair to cut, since I’m no longer able to donate my blood at the local blood center. I also tell them not to worry about my freaking out if they accidentally cut it too short because it will always grow out. This usually puts them more at ease and I have a relaxing time, including a wash and scalp massage. I try to stick with whatever student I get, until she graduates, then ask her to recommend the next student. This has worked well for many years. They do all the things that are in this video, so I know I’ve done well with my choice of “salons”.
And if the student isn't able to satisfy the client you get a redo as the instructor checks the haircut. Ages ago during my life as a cosmetology instructor there were some pretty tricky clients that waited patiently for me to check the cut, then asked for changes that amounted to a whole new cut. I caught on to that pretty quick. They were the people who colored their own hair, had their non hairdresser sister do their perm every four months... 🤯
I let a trainee cut my pixie . She was supervised every step of the way and did a great job . As the haircut was explained step by step it gave me a real appreciation of the work that goes into a short haircut
You need to open styling schools and train stylists. It is so hard to find a good stylist. Or travel the country and visit us and cut our hair for us!! I always love your videos.
My stylist of over 20 years died from COVID. She was in an upscale salon and I paid a lot of money but she was worth it. Now I go to kind of a dated old salon and the woman I found hardly charges me anything and gives me some of the best haircuts I've ever had. Dont judge by the look of the salon!
Busy Stylists that are booked give you rush work. They are trying to make $. The higher end stylists that charge too much are ego based and not in it for the hair as they were when they started.
First, the "M" neckline, exactly why I quit my pixie. Everyone kept acting like I was crazy and only would cut straight across, giving what I called an "old lady neckline". Second, texturizing shears, I knew it! Everyone kept saying that thinning shears WERE texturizing shears. Not in a million years! You explained both, complete with pictures! I'm going to save this. TY, TY, TY!!
Justin, I love your videos, you ARE a genius! Your advice is always right on. I HAVE THE M!! We (my stylist & I) call it my fringies. I saw it on someone else and asked her to do it for me. I get compliments all the time on my pixie and I'm 71. It keeps me young, I DO NOT want an old lady "SOS pad" hairdo! AND I have found the other 3 tips here to be absolutely true too! You're the man! 😉
Spot on, Justin! I finally found someone to cut my hair into a pixie, actually she is my son's barber! She has done the "m" neckline, left the top longer, and is really good at shaping the profile to add more volume at the back of my head (which is a flat). I was able to discuss what I wanted with her... and she was very receptive. We decided together to try a soft undercut on the sides along with tapering to create a shape that adds a softness to my face while accenting my cheek bones. I am about to travel to Europe for a month, and I will not be taking a blow dryer. I LOVE how easy and flattering this haircut is for me. ADDITIONALLY: I am trying out using a shampoo bar instead of liquid shampoo in order to make travel packing and going through TSA checkpoints easier. I found a "purple" shampoo bar online, and it seems to be working for my short hair. However, I have found others that seem to have way too much oils in them. I know you have some favorite products, but you also say to use what works best for us. I am just curious... what are your thoughts on shampoo bars?
Hi Andrea! I know you didn’t ask me but I Love our shampoo bar. It took a year for my husband and I to use 1 bar of a Viori shampoo bar. Got it on Amazon and I think it was the only one there at the time…but there’s a lot more out there now. I don’t, however, get good results from the conditioner bar. I think it would depend on your hair type. But for travel, they’d be perfect!
@@gwenjones1913 I found some shampoo bars in local stores, but they didn't smell good. I did find one with Tea Tree Oil to try, but it has a lot of other oils also. If my hair was extremely dry, it might be more suitable. Instead, I use it as a moisturizing body bar, and I use it about once a week on my hair. I ordered one online that is "purple" to help with brassiness and gray hair. So far, I am pleased with it, especially when I alternate the two. I cut a small piece off each bar, put them in small organza bags, and use those for travel! Thanks for your input! 🙂
Most stylists don’t posses your level of skill or dedication to their craft. I have had so many lousy haircuts over the years. They don’t listen and don’t take face shape or hair type into consideration. Also if the stylist doesn’t style their own hair, dress smartly or wear makeup, run.
Wearing no makeup is not a deal breaker. Makeup can, make, some people break out due to allergies. I honestly love it when a woman is confident in her own skin and not want, to wear makeup.
I just quit my hairdresser, she won't texturize my pixie and when she does, its too thin, and she shaves the back of my neck and doesn' t leave it sassy like I asked for, I was stuck for years with an incompetent stylist, Im not going that route again, I gave her 3 chances to correct it, and each time it was worse, so onto find another one, that will do what I want
Justin, I've reviewed every single one of your presentations, especially this one to find the correct way to communicate to my stylist exactly what I wanted and your very important tips. My hair was done today and it turned out fantastic. Volume where I needed it so I don't get 'flat' head spots, the "M" at the nape of the neck and keeping hair around the face where appropriate for my face shape. You're a rock star!! A huge THANK YOU for all your great information and help. Cheers!
Ive had many pixies where that shape has happened. Thanks for the explanation and tips! Now that ive embraced gray, i want to avoid the severe chopped off pixie as it reminds me of the old lady pixie even though i am an old lady....😂
Thanks for this, Justin. I have believed intuitively everything you are saying about the right shape for a short cut. I’m in a frustrating time because my stylist of 30+ years (yes, I, too, am old🙀) has moved away, full on disaster!😭 I have tried three times since she left to get my hair cut and it’s been terrible all three times.😬 I asked to have the above the temple area you mention and the back of my hair to be left full enough to not go flat. I wanted some light layering on top, but not short layers, and I wanted a pixie (going from an undercut). I knew on this last cut I was headed to the hospital for cancer surgery, so I wanted a short haircut, nicely shaped and easy to manage, to get me through this ordeal. No dice. It seems no matter how I explain these concepts or how much I pay for a haircut, I can’t get anyone to do it. Sure wish I lived near you! My top is thinner because I’ve had several cancer surgeries on my scalp and hair doesn’t grow on scars, but if cut correctly (like my long time stylist always cut it), it looks surprisingly full. I am at my wits end. Any idea of how to find a good stylist, or articulate what I want differently so that I can actually get a good haircut? Maybe I should just have them watch this video! I am beyond frustrated and I can tell tell you even bad haircuts aren’t cheap! Thanks again, love your videos!
I find that when I have a bob shape, my natural level 7 dark blonde color is great but when I go short, a stronger, much lighter level 9 blonde looks best. On me, short hair and my natural color just looks average or ordinary. When I amp it up with color, the same cut looks extraordinary.
I'm in tears over my hair...it went from thick chin length to choppy blocked neckline and all the things that you suggested NOT to have....both stylist totally wrecked it. And I'm devastated. Have nowhere to go short of shaving it off.... ugh
You gave me the greatest tips. I’m taking this to my stylist. I am 63 and have always had a cut that turns mushroom. Now I know the fix. thank you for sharing your skills
Excellent point with the M on the back neckline, the tapering the sides above the ear and not holding it straight out…plus texturizing ends to break it up!! Oh my gosh…Thank you for this refresher! As a hairstylist of 30 years, I truly appreciate you sharing these videos. Thank you! If you are ever in MN, it would be Amazing to have you come teach a hair cutting class at our Salon!!
Hey! Thank you so much! I truly appreciate that support! It's always SO nice to have the support of other stylists. Shoot me an email (Hickoxhair@gmail.com). I haven considered doing salon courses but haven't settled on any specifics yet. I'm always open to a conversation.
One thing one can do is use a satin or silk pillowcase as that stresses the hair less, also the hair becomes more brittle so collagen ( diffrent collagen for diffrent areas personally prefer a combo which also reduce pain and has healed up my face from peri menopause acne ) and multivitamins as well as omega 3, 6, 9 …hair oil, tangleteaser brush for wet hair ( cheap af but life saver ) and finally suspekt but don’t know that you could probably lessen the problem with the right haircut adjusted to you if you talk with your hairdresser.
Justin, I love watching you, especially when you are talking about pixies. You are so knowledgeable and I appreciate you taking the time to explain some things I can use. ❤
Make your own corner mirror to see all sides of your head when you want to cut your own hair by sticking mirrors on the insides of bathroom cabinet doors (or any cupboard doors for that matter) with doors that open away from each other or on the outside of cupboard doors that open towards each other. Or, if you have a spare corner anywhere, strategically stick mirrors where the walls meet. Or, stick mirrors on hinged plywood panels which can stand up by themselves while you cut and which can then be folded away for storage.
Dern it! I’m almost two years into this grow out-and you go and do this! Allllllll those beautiful Pixies! It’s such a great cut, and so easy! Well, maybe I’m getting too old for a short cut. . . and my waistline has disappeared! A pumpkin with legs! 🎃 🤣😂🤣😂
Ah Ha!!! You just solved a problem I have been having with my stylist for years! He is cutting the top to short for the sides and I always end up with lumps on the upper sides and dips just underneath the lumps (just like the picture you showed). And he was confused when I told him to cut the "M: on the neckline. Love the guy and have been going to him for years but now I understand the why of some of the issues I have when I leave the salon. THANKS!!
I 100% agree with your tips. I had to figure these out for myself along with trying to cut my own hair because it was always some disaster with my hairdressers. Another thing I do is cut my sideburns pointy rather than blunt.
Thank you for the helpful tips. I always ask my hairdresser to give my hair more oomph on top. I have very fine hair, so now I'll know what to ask for. You and your wife are awesome. Keep Smiling 🤗
Thank you for the Pixie tips. Oh god - I asked my hairdresser to leave the "M" neckline. She always cut mine straight across and I hated it. She was quiet offended when I said I think I'd "like" to leave the "m" line at the back of my neck this time. She was definitely not impressed that I was the one making a hairdresser request. Obviously some hairdressers are extremely "delicate".
My first pixie was cut just like the photo you showed and I hated it. Since then, I found a lady that does an amazing job. The only thing she doesn’t do is the M at the back but my hairline is fairly straight. I don’t have much of an M. I’m going have a try doing that because I absolutely love short hair. Thanks for all your Tips and tricks! I often trim my own hair to go longer in between cuts as mine is very thick, coarse and wavy/curly. I love thinning and texturizing shears. Otherwise I have a huge bush on top of my head. Love your videos.
I have been trying to get stylists to use my natural hairline in back for decades. They always smile, nod, and then shave my neck to give me a straight line in back. I get so frustrated. Not only does it look bad, but 5 days later I have stubble on my neck.
Your video is so timely. I got a pixie haircut in Finland this summer. Tomorrow for the first time, I'm getting my pixie cut by my local hairdresser. I will definitely keep your tips in mind. Thank you for excellent hair videos! 🌟
Lol I absolutely love how your wife was first talking on the promo part! I was laughing so hard! Y'all both did great explaining it! I had a pixie for my last two spinal surgeries.... My hair is longer now and trying to grow out an undercut or what I'm calling my reverse mullet! When I put my hair up I have the lovely mullet hair in back lol Thanks to y'all both ❤❤
I look better with short hair but rarely have I found a good hairdresser for short hair. The easiest hair I had was all one length but not the most flattering on me.
My hair is curly and the top is thinned out a lot and has gotten frizzy. Since my hair is grey, all the pixies no matter what is said, look the same, the old lady bowl cut. I've seen attempts at point cutting that were more rectangular than triangular. I've never seen texturizing shears used only thinning shears, so that is very interesting. Since Covid I've given up getting my hair cut professionally and gone to wearing wigs. I wonder if you could talk a bit about those of us who need to learn to cut our own hair because we're simply not finding professionals who know how to point cut, texturize and not choose bowl cuts for all old ladies
I’ve learned to cut my own hair, although I’m still improving my skills. One thing I can tell you, is that you’ll need two mirrors positioned in a way that allow you to see the back of your head. You need to be able to move in a way so that you can see the sides and then the back as you cut your hair. i also had to learn how to hold the scissors with my left hand, imitating very carefully the movements of my right hand (do the opposite if you’re left-handed). Just two tips for you to start. 😊
I'm not sure if the mirrors I have in my bathrooms are still being manufactured, but I've bought several through the years from a glass and mirror shop. It's called Swing Vue. I have single articulated and double articulated. If you're able to locate one have someone very picky hang it for you. It must be hung level and plumb for ease of use. If not hung correctly it'll be a nightmare to use because it won't stay where you need it. I've been less satisfied with the double articulated one I have.
@@rt3box6tx74 I have one of the doubles and I love it! I was very fortunate that it was already installed in the master bath when I bought the house. They are awesome!
Just another reason I cut my own hair. Yes it went from shoulder length to pixie. I’ve done all these things never knew I was doing it right, it just always worked. Stylists won’t listen to me when I say what quirks my hair has and work with my hair instead of against it. Now I save $100 of dollars and get my best style by me.
I learned all these through trial and error, but trying to get an actual stylist to do them is nigh on impossible- and they all love to use a razor...on my curly hair that's a no. Speaking of curl they like to cut it wet, then I've been scalped. I basically cut it pretty much to how I want and then randomly pinch chunks and nip away with the scissors, maybe not professional but it gives it both movement and the ability to lie flat rather than pouf out. One has to be a contortionist to do the nape though, sadly. I've been thinking of trying a men's barber, they might be able to understand what I need :)
Yes, yes and yes. Have curly hair, which some hairdressers don't seem to appreciate will bob up after a bit of layering. Always have to cut a chunk or two off. Had the same hairdresser for years and we used to chat for Britain but I was always a bit worried she wasn't paying attention. Out comes the shaver , for the neck, without asking - any regrowth is basically like men's bristles. I had wondered about using a barber. Almost for the novelty and no obligations to go back.
Great informative video, I never had a pixie, but, as Dionna said, “never say never”…good information to have at hand, just in case!…I hope you are doing great!!!!…love seeing you both!!!!!…much love and appreciation!…BTW, loving the defrizz!!!!!!💜💜💜💜💜💜
Please advise! I am trying to grow out my bob. Six months ago I was badly burned and my hair was burned too. Those burned parts, on the outside and top of the style, are just breaking off shorter and shorter leaving the very top looking chopped off and dry. What can I do to stop the breakage ? Is my only option to cut layers ?
Hi, @reikiwithcary2682! We're excited for you to treat yourself with the NIRA Laser. We're sure getting back into the habit will only enhance those great results. Feel free to update us with your results in a couple of months.
Great question. If you're doing it at home, I would focus on addressing the areas that are bulky or where you see lines. Otherwise....as they say, "if it ain't broke........".
I stopped going to the hair salon 15 years ago .never got what i asked for .so i cut and colour my own pixie hawk...i have been asked by hair dressers and salon owner asked me how i can possible to it so weell .i had one ask me to explain to him step ny step how i done . I take it they didnt believe i was doing it myseld
Hi Justin, I'm Liz. I love your videos (just discovered you two or three days ago). They've been so helpful and you and Dionna have great personalities! Regarding the Pixie cut: are there any thoughts on what to do with weird wave patterns at the temples when you have a pixie cut? I have naturally thick hair with bumpy waves that I get straightened with the Japanese Straightening process (which I love) when I'm wearing it long. Will I need to keep doing the JSP if I cut it into a pixie? In the past when I've gotten my hair cut short pre using JSP, the wave was problematic and made my hair got really bumpy there. Btw, my husband hasn't liked my hair short in the past because I was never satisfied with the cuts and kept going shorter (maybe I didn't know these tips then!)
I've wanted a slightly longer pixie for the last few years. My face is longer with sharp features so I've never been brave enough to try or find a truly skilled hairstylist to trust! I live in a pretty rural area so my options are limited. If I ever take a trip to the Pacific Northwest I'm scheduling an appointment! 😉😅
I do have a pixie, and I do love it, but I have to remind my stylist almost every time not to cut the nape straight across, nor to cut the sides into little triangles and to use a razor the wisp out and taper these areas! Do you ever cut hair dry? At my last appointment, the cut had been particularly good all 5 weeks, and hardly needed cutting. She decided that she would cut it dry to preserve the shape. She used both scissors and a razor, but I felt the razor pulling quite a bit, and now have a bald spot! I am able to camouflage this, but can't help thinking that the razor on dry hair is a mistake and could cause many mishaps.
This should be *mandatory* viewing for anyone hoping to get a license to cut hair! Think of all the misery that would be avoided if every hairdresser understood these four fundamental issues and then bothered to gain the expertise to address them all. How many of us are wearing bobs and lobs and long hair because we can't find someone to give us a great short haircut? I'm sure I'm not the only one. So true about verticals being unattractive in short haircuts and I'll add that horizontals are just as bad IMHO. Justin got their with the neckline but I would extend that to any sort of horizontal line -- unless of course that's the intention. And when you think of it short haircuts with horizontal lines are always "edgy" because there is something that is not intuitive or natural looking about them. Beautiful too in their own way but horizontal and vertical lines should be very intentional, not just bad haircutting and not mixed together. Another insightful, well paced, friendly charming and so informative video, Justin. It's always a pleasure!
Hi You are so informative about mistakes that some hairdressers make ! I cant tell You how MANY time I’ve come home to find the top and temple area is way to short, why in hell aren’t they trained better than this! Thank Youfor talking about this. I not say and show them this is a no cut zone!! 😮
I had a Phenomenal * stylist who cut the BEST pixies, then she moved to NC (I’m near Cincinnati) and I haven’t been able to find anyone who can do what she did or even close. I have shown each one photos of my previous cuts, they say they can do it, I let them then they butcher my cut. I am on stylist #10. Even tried a female barber I am so desperate. Now I’m considering just flying to North Carolina once every four months to get the cut from my former Silas two is actually competent. Why are there so many incompetent hairstylist? Why are there so many amateurs? It’s a real problem, if I did my job this badly I would get fired.
My hair is so straight and so thick and course it seems like no matter how I have it cut or even if I have it permed it just looks like a football helmet. The hair around my face is gray and white naturally but the back of my hair is still sail and pepper more on the dark side. I always feel like I there is a very distinct break in my hair.
Thank you Justin. About to have this type of cut so will be using some key terms from your video. I think the problem is we know what we want, but we don't know the terminology hairdressers use for it. They love the shaver too - and regrowth looks like a bloke's bristles. I know! Come and visit your brother, and if you can just nip into Wiltshire to cut my hair, that will be great, thank you very much!
My hair is thinning as i grow older. Finally found a stylist who doesn’t cut my hair leaving me with wispy, thin Founding Father sideburns. I think she does all the things that you talked about in this video! Except the nape of the neck thing. My neck is hairy and requires more intervention! I wish the top of my head was as hairy as my neck!
THANK YOU!! It took me a year to get my stylist to believe me about texturizing ends and point cutting!! I didn't understand how my (retired) stylist knew SO MUCH more, that this stylist hadn't been taught in school, and hadn't seen in salon. 🙄
Only after 20+ years of doing my hair myself I'm finally checking into tips lol. Even my worst self hair cut was better than any salon cut I've ever got. My biggest issue is the back because I can't see it. (Even if I had a back mirror, my eyes don't work well enough) I've honestly even used shadows as my guide 😂 thanks for the information!
Just used the texturizing sissors and not used volume mousse. Did the hairdrying like you said. At first I thought; this is not gonna work but then I used my styler and now my hair looks good. I just need to cut some hair of the side but that is something for the hairdresser. But your tips work. Thanks for that.
I have been doing hair since 1978. I beat you by a few years. Good advice in this video, I see a lot of stylists struggling to execute the proper volume points.
Very good points, I already realized some myself. The problem I have is, I always tell this my coiffeur and some do not really understand what I mean and leave the bottom longer than I want it...
this is an awesome video. I've had a pixie for almost 30 years...but after neurosurgery i don't want anyone touching my head...so my boyfriend (who is completely bald) has become my hairdresser, lol. We've experimented with a lot and he's getting the hang of it, but your videos offer the perfect tips! Thank you for taking the time to make these and share your hard earned knowledge.
Be great if you lived near me in Yorkshire, England Justin. I'd trust you with my hair because 9 out of 10 visits to a hairdresser I have to do it myself on arrival home. I recently cut it to a pixie bob from shoulder length and quite like it but would like a hairdresser to do it for me, however.... Incidentally I bought the Nira Pro 6 weeks ago, LOVE it, so fingers crossed there'll be visible results after 90 days.
Hey! Thanks fro the trust! My brother lives in England....he's not a stylist though...so that is absolutely NO help to you! LOL I hope you find a stylist that can take care of ya! I wish I knew someone around you to recommend. Glad you love the NIRA! It's awesome right! I'm sure you'll see results. I've been noticing them for sure on Dionna and I.
@@justinhickox thanks Justin just let me know if you visit your brother, IF he lives near me!!😁 My brother was a fantastic hair stylist, but sadly died of cancer 20 years ago, since then I haven't found anyone as good as him so I do it myself. Dionna doesn't need the Nira, but I guess if she starts before wrinkles are deep they'll never deepen?🤞I don't normally comment but have been a subscriber for ages and watch all your videos, thank you.
When I sported a pixie and the stylist cut the nape straight across, I would always say it made my neck look like that of a linebacker (and that’s not how I want to “sport” a style). So I would have him or her buzz an inverted V to break it up and give it some sass.
I am stuck in a hair dilemma at the moment. I spent the last few years growing out a short spiky cut. I had some long layers cut in to add movement and help give it life, and loved it.. until... Age, and too much stress has it thinning so much! My thin, fine hair is just, well, sad.
I am struggling with you …. The thinning, baby fine hair has me wanting to shave it all off and wear wigs! But wigs are another dilemma cause they have too much hair!!! Ugh!!!! It never ends!!!
@@lindadanoneberg4818 I have done the shaved head and wigs. You're right. Summer was not the time for that idea! Hot flashes are nothing compared to sweating under a wig!! Lol! I'm still playing with the idea of shaving it off. Just completely embrace my baldness!
Hi Justine, Great video. I'm keeping my pixie although I wasn't happy at all with my last haircut. But I do have a question for you about the M in the back. My hair is curly and the back always seems to want to flip up. My last cut the stylist seemed to cut the back to do that and it was hard for me to get it to behave. Anyway I've taken notes and some photos from you video that I'll be sharing at my next cut. Thanks again for doing these videos.
I am 59 and have lost a lot of hair in the front. I would love to see recommendations. I have a shorter bob now. My hair is too thin for bangs. I was planning to make an appointment for a pixie soon, so I was glad to see this video.
On my second cut with a new stylist, I told her the sides seemed too heavy or full. Her solution? Lift up half the sides and whack it off. It took over a year to grow it out enough for another cut (from a new stylist of course). Yesterday I had my hair cut in a perfect short pixieish style. I love it! She did many of the things you suggest.
Oh my goodness, the lady with the little cap is EXATCTLY what's happened to my cut this time around. My first pixie for curly hair was unbelievably good and easy to manage, the last two really not so much.
😢. No se que hacer.
Justin, I'm a 56 year old woman with weird hair😂. Thick in the crown, thin forehead and temples. I REALLY struggle finding a stylist who can cut a Pixie for me without ending up either looking masculine or helmet head. I'd be willing to fly all the way from Michigan to have you cut my hair😂😂 I've been through 5 stylists in the past 2 years. Its so frustrating
Great information! Thank you! My stylist tends to use the texturizing shears starting at halfway down the hair shaft and then moving up to the ends. I feel like it takes out too much - I wish she would just do the ends. Also about the M - my neck hair growth tends toward the duck tail, so she cuts it that way and uses the shaver on the rest of my neck so you only see a duck tail. I think I'd like that M look on my neck - but not sure if it would work?
This is such AWESOME info!! Especially the details on texturing and the difference between shears! I had no idea!! I wish you would explain which direction to hold the texturing shears tho...I have heard that is important too....i just gave myself some long bangs to get rid of some overly blonde and processed hair around my face and you nailed it! Looks chopped... and my hair is very thick. Gonna try this! I'm totally that person that has zero professional training that messes around with my hair between appts for better or worse 😢😂 this is super interesting and helpful info Justin! Thanks! And he's right guys watch out for cutting those knuckles!! OUCH
I wish that you could visit me and my hair dresser in Houston Texas, because she is always doing something wrong when she cuts my hair and I can't figure it out, it's like on side is different than the other side. I live in a pretty good part of Houston, I've lived in this area for like 30 years.
Sorry to hear that! It could be that one side is different. That happens often. Most stylists have a "longer side" (myself included) that they really have to learn how to recognize and address. There are also a lot of situations where hair growth is totally different on one side and it can cause concerns. Sometimes there are techniques that can be used to address that, sometimes it's necessary to style those differences out (which the stylist would have to show you how to manage).
Thank you Justin excellent tips. I’ve been cutting my own hair since the 80’s, mostly pixie, and have sometimes made the mistake of cutting it too short on top and temple. I will do the M as I’ve never heard that before but don’t like it too straight and get some proper texturing scissors as after seeing your video I realised mine are thinning ones. Something I don’t need!! I really like the way you (and your wife) present too. Fun and friendly. Thank you 😊
It seems that most young hairdressers don’t know how to do pixie cuts. They seem to be out of style here in the Midwest in the US. I have only had 2 hair dressers one, in Dallas, one in Indiana who knew how to do a pixie cut. I got it cut yesterday and it was not a good cut. I will keep searching for the right hair dresser! The hard part about moving to different states is it takes awhile to find the right hairdresser!!
Hola. Cómo estás? Creo que el balance también es fundamental. Pienso que el corte agrega años si se ve más pesado en la parte de atrás que adelante. Me parecen más favorecedores los pixies con la nuca alta y el flequillo algo más largo. No?
The Nira sounds interesting. Note that optometrist uses laser right under the eye and it helps correct dry eyes which are very problematic with contact lens wearers. I wonder if the Nira has any benefits that way?
I have a question, love your videos. So my pixie is shaved on the sides and back, crown is about 1 1/2 inch long with feather short bangs since I have a short forehead 😊. However, top back toward the right I have a cowlick that it stands up my hairdresser is great and we tried a lot of things even cutting it they way it grows but after a week it standup. I don’t watch my hair everyday but if I but paste for it to lie down than I have to watch everyday and with winter and blow dry ugh. When I had my hair long, it was a pain because that area after two days I would have to wash it because that area would hurt because that part of the hair didn’t wanna lay down and I wanted to do its own thing and it created pain in that area, so my question is what should I do to tame it?
I’ve had a pixie since brain surgery 20 yrs ago. Three years ago I had 12 months of chemo. My hair went from somewhat thin to extremely thin with almost “male pattern baldness”. I’m at a loss of what to do.
How many of these tips have you heard before? AND, what tips do YOU have that have helped you LOVE your pixie?
Going shorter on the fringe helps lighten my hair, which is dead straight and curl resistant, helps it hold a bit of a curl and show off the layering and avoids me looking like Moe of the three stooges. I didn’t think I could pull that off, but I was wrong. Also, I cut my own hair and use the texturising scissors as directed (and I also point cut) and also to keep the back in shape and tight to my head, which is so much easier when doing this on my own.
I just started watching!!!!…I knew the M🤣🤣🤣
You need to find an older hair stylist. The younger ones aren’t taught a lot of things. I’ve worked 53 years and some younger stylists are really bad
@@pamelaspooner7183 do you have any good videos to suggest? I’m game to try anything if I can find good videos.
I’ve been doing mine too since the lockdowns. I have made mistakes but sometimes I get compliments!😅
This sounds really wonderful! I might just start going to beauty schools now for haircuts.
What a good idea.
I would do this but I don't trust them lol
You need to open styling schools and train stylists. It is so hard to find a good stylist. Or travel the country and visit us and cut our hair for us!! I always love your videos.
My stylist of over 20 years died from COVID. She was in an upscale salon and I paid a lot of money but she was worth it. Now I go to kind of a dated old salon and the woman I found hardly charges me anything and gives me some of the best haircuts I've ever had. Dont judge by the look of the salon!
So true! Best stylist and colorist had a little salon out of her home and was not a stylish person at all. She was awesome!
what great luck! It's hard to find a stylist.
May I ask where you go now? Hey, I'd rather find a great stylist than win the lottery!😂
@@hastingshavanese Unfortunately for me, she retired.
Sorry to hear that! Hope you find someone that takes care of ya.
@@justinhickox I hope so too, because she completely messed my part at the crown, I have to relearn my part, it's such a mess
Hi. Where is your salon? Do u take new clients?
Good luck finding someone who is not only a good stylist but one that can cut a good pixie. I’ve beefed looking for years
@@Alwaysinvisable it's so frustrating, 8m happy I took a picture of the great haircut, before it went bad
Me too
Thanks for this, Justin.

Why do older women have a problem with their hair splitting in the back at the crown. It is SO common. Help! What to do?
This!!! No matter what product, trading, spray…starts splitting. Never happened before! Big grr! What is the solution?
*teasing 🙄
Interested to know myself…especially since I am a side sleeper.
I find highlights on short hair make huge difference
Well, it is nearly Hallowe'en .... 😄
Haha that’s the best way to look at it! -Susan
Ha,ha,ha, I always say a tomato with toothpicks. ❤
My hairdresser runs her sheers along the top of my pixie in a V shape 3 times to make petals. Helps a lot with styling. Fine hair here, super short.
Justin-could you style someone’s short hair for us?
Yess ❤❤
I would be finding a new hair dresser.
You are paying them for what you want, not the other way around. 🙄
Why aren't hairdressers trained in these techniques? Women pay a fortune, and most of us walk away disappointed.
So true
Your video is so timely. I got a pixie haircut in Finland this summer. Tomorrow for the first time, I'm getting my pixie cut by my local hairdresser. I will definitely keep your tips in mind. Thank you for excellent hair videos! 🌟
Lol I absolutely love how your wife was first talking on the promo part! I was laughing so hard! Y'all both did great explaining it! I had a pixie for my last two spinal surgeries.... My hair is longer now and trying to grow out an undercut or what I'm calling my reverse mullet! When I put my hair up I have the lovely mullet hair in back lol
Thanks to y'all both ❤❤
I look better with short hair but rarely have I found a good hairdresser for short hair.
Texturizing, shears, and thinning shears, are the same tool!
@@rt3box6tx74 I have one of the doubles and I love it! I was very fortunate that it was already installed in the master bath when I bought the house. They are awesome!
@@roxannerice8565 Nope. Look closely when he shows them close up.
Wish I had you to cut my hair during my chemo grow out. If I could get a cute cut, I would probably leave it short for awhile.
Next video suggestion: how to grow out your pixie and love it
Oh my goodness! JUSTIN!!!! Thank you so much for creating a video all about pixies! I have been cutting my own hair for years, but every tip helps! 🙌
My stylist uses a #3 clipper on the back and then razors the bottom into the M. She also point cuts the ends and fringes out the bangs and points.
Okay okay! I'll start using my Nira Pro again!!! Especially since you say you are old.. but I am OLDER! A lot older! Thanks for all that you do!!!
Hi, @reikiwithcary2682! We're excited for you to treat yourself with the NIRA Laser. We're sure getting back into the habit will only enhance those great results. Feel free to update us with your results in a couple of months.
Hi, Justin, when you texturize, do you do all your hair or just in bulky or flat areas?
Great question. If you're doing it at home, I would focus on addressing the areas that are bulky or where you see lines. Otherwise....as they say, "if it ain't broke........".
❤
I will try all of those! I have a pixie now and I am getting use to it!!
I love my pixie cut. My neckline is super short and naturally grows into a point in the back. Lower left grows to meet Lower right side.
You two are hilarious! 🤣
Where in NC?
You are so likeable. Appreciate all of your videos!
I have a hairy “M”, too! I have a pixie and wonder if my stylist can work with my natural nape. Hairy necks, unite!
😊😊😊@@amrita4468
Omg I was rolling at “Founding Father Sideburns” 😂
THANK YOU!! It took me a year to get my stylist to believe me about texturizing ends and point cutting!! I didn't understand how my (retired) stylist knew SO MUCH more, that this stylist hadn't been taught in school, and hadn't seen in salon. 🙄
Your wife is so beautiful 💕
In another video, you gave me the courage to take my bangs up and back, and to create more volume at the top and sides, and I am loving it! Thank you!
I love love a pixie. I have never had the courage to get one. ❤❤
What are the key phrases I can say to my stylist to get these techniques but not insult her intelligence?
Suggestion: put your notes above the camera. Looking side to side = shifty eyes. Great vid and advice.
Whoa! I got the ‘M’ because I just liked the shape of my natural neck line! 😂
How do I go about finding a good hairstylist? I’ve never been happy with my hair and I’m 68🙁
Thank you Justin, great tips! Really appreciate them! The Lord bless you!
Oh my goodness, the lady with the little cap is EXATCTLY what's happened to my cut this time around. My first pixie for curly hair was unbelievably good and easy to manage, the last two really not so much.
😢. No se que hacer.
Hi, @pmoda011! Thank you for choosing NIRA. We're glad that you can incorporate the laser into your everyday skincare routine!
Any suggestions on how to get a good pixie M-shape at the neckline when you have cowlicks?
OUCH
I really really love all what you are teaching us ❤❤❤❤❤
Helpful tips for short hair. I currently have a short bob and can use a lot of your suggestions.
You should try Chris Jones at Salon Bugatti. He is either in Houston or The Woodlands.
Thank you 😊
Took notes and will share with my stylists for future cut…I wish you were my hairdresser!
Not quite on topic, but wanted to let you know I purchased the Laifen swift hair dryer and love it! Thanks for the recommendation!
Me, too, and I'm loving it!
I love this advice and will share with my stylist!
Hola. Cómo estás? Creo que el balance también es fundamental. Pienso que el corte agrega años si se ve más pesado en la parte de atrás que adelante. Me parecen más favorecedores los pixies con la nuca alta y el flequillo algo más largo. No?
The Nira sounds interesting. Note that optometrist uses laser right under the eye and it helps correct dry eyes which are very problematic with contact lens wearers. I wonder if the Nira has any benefits that way?
this is fantastic!!!! going to talk to my stylist about you and our videos!!!
Loved these awesome tips. Thank you so much! 🙃
