- wow. This is shocking to me. Almost like an evolution of the standard liturgical writing you hear in Bach and Handel celebrating the church and God. Of course, Gabriel is the angel sent down by God to Mary so to hear it this way is...insane.

I love when a boss theme is not about you fighting them, but they fighting you. It's their desperation to stop you as if they were the protagonist.
Gabriel is technically the main character. Think about it, V1 is just another machine. Gabriel has development and influences the plot of the game, after the fights with V1. The thing that makes V1 a powerhouse is his refueling in combat method and it's arsenal.

ULTRAKILL is the epitome of “saying more with less.” Gabriel has two major cutscenes at the end of 3-2 and 6-2 yet his character shows such depth. It really is something special
He is a great character. And angel that was the judge of Hell itself, beaten down and feeling Loss for the first time. Being stripped of his angelic powers and fighting the one who defeated him before. Only to be beaten again, his hatred grows to a level of intensity that makes him realize, God is not there to give him strength, his strength is inside him and ONLY inside him. His faith broken, his body bleeding. His God abandoned. The machine MUST...BE..DESTEOYED!!!
plus, notice that in 6-2, Gabriel actually uses his swords, and if you read Sisyphus Prime's catalog, the only time Gabriel uses his swords, is against Sisyphus. this proves that V1 is very strong, so strong that Gabriel is desperate enough to finally uses his swords again

The organ solo is played by gabriel as you come to him, and when the fight begins, he slams down and cuts it off before doing that Cut You Down line to silence, before drawing his swords at the end of the quote and the music starts abruptly.
Hakita did this track 4 hours before the launch of this chapter, having realized he didn't have one done for it by accident lmao
I'm honestly so glad you picked this version, as Gianni's voice acting in tandem elevates the track so much. It's good on it's own, it's fantastic together

Fun fact: Hakita has mentioned before, that V1 (the player character) is not the protagonist of this story, Gabriel is as the character that develops over the course of the game. This series of tracks really showcases that, a character filled with pride, then hatred, then faced with reality he turns to introspection, and finally a sense of clarity.

It'd be interested to see him in a situation where Gabriel is forced to watch for the few moments left of his life as V1 erases the last of Hell's residents, only to make it to heaven and start the process again as V1 slaughters the innocent people in Heaven; undoing EVERYTHING that he's worked for up until this point. Just maybe, he'd even become a Prime Soul from the unimaginable amount of rage and frustration from such an event and he'd show up for one of those encore levels I've heard other people talking about.

When Gabriel Prime finally does form he's the same size as he was before. His two blades are now bloodless and clean. There isn't a Flesh Prison, but in my mind there isn't a Flesh Prison *yet*.
Suddenly, the corpse of Lucifer bursts from the ice below you, the corpse being puppeteered by Hell itself, engulfing Gabriel in his maw.
But like Sisyphus, this doesn't last. Gabriel slices the beast into pieces from within using his blades.
"We both knew how that battle was destined to end, brother."
Gabriel turns back to look at V1.
No speech needed. No declaration of vengeance against those who wronged Gabriel required. He utters a mere four words to the machine.

The "Altars of Apostay" is perhaps the most famous track amongst fans. I don't want to give any themes away, but there's a certain feeling that's hard to accurately pin down that goes through the players mind as they reach this level. You've gotten amazing accuracy from music alone in so many of your reviews, and I'd love to be able to finally put this feeling down into words. Give it a listen.
Totally agree. I feel like the track "Glory" has a similar feeling. That of being something so great and terrible.
I mean the leitmotifs of it and the almost exhaustion of the drone giving it a second wind feeling, especially in the dual hideous mass fight

You pretty much hit the nail on the head with this one. Gabriel starts off as an archangel, the mightiest enforcer of God's will on earth. But then...then a simple machine defeats him and that defeat completely BREAKS him. He goes from righteous protector to the avatar of hatred itself. A simple machine shook his faith so much that it made him realize that everything he stood for, everything he believed in was false. God is dead and soon, he will be too. But not before he has his revenge.
If I'm not mistaken this song plays during the second fight against him in Heresy, the climax of chapter 2 and I believe currently the final chapter of the game(Game is not yet finished BTW). In this fight he is known as the Apostate Of Hate and BOY does he hate you. This fight was not meant to be done by humans as it requires an act of GOD to beat. Especially phase 2, AKA Funny Mode

The song plays in the aftermath of the 2nd fight when Gabriel goes to confront the Council about the reality of their existence. He slaughters the Council after they refuse to listen to him, constantly falling back on "you need faith, Gabriel, and it will guide you!", to which Gabriel responds with "God left a long time ago", cuts off the head of the Council's head and shows it in front of the denizens of Heaven. I think.
@@Ch4pp13 I'm pretty sure it plays during the actual fight as well. That organ solo and Gabriel's lines about how he's going to kill you are all in the fight itself. It's probably just the final bit of the song when the image switches to that more calm one that plays during said scene

To clear up some confusion about where the song plays: Marco watched a video that combines 3 songs, one for before the fight as you walk up to Gabriel while he monologues about much he hates you and how hard he's going to beat you up; one for the fight itself; and one for the post-fight cutscene where Gabriel ponders about how the hell did he lose to a gopro twice and decides to kill the holy council.
In ULTRAKILL, God has left. God is nowhere to be seen, and heaven has formed a council that now rules, and says they are following the will of god, which Gabriel has fought for for years, committing heinous crimes like dooming the souls inside the Leviathan to suffering and killing King Minos, but V1, has beat him, beat the father's light. Now the machine stands before him again, and as a result of this fight, he loses his faith in God, his faith in the council, and now he takes life into his own hands. He kills the council and... well, the rest is yet to be seen in

I actually have a theory that V-1 is supposed to be either God in a weakend form or a tool of God killing everything that exists in hell to completely get rid of everything he deems a failure before creating a new universe. Would fit the theme of ULTRAKILL and the lore found on the secret level terminals.
@Fareflight hakita has said the idea of V1 being secretly God is cringe, so God either oofed himself, or left the universe to make a new one instead of remaking this one over and over and over and over again.

My favorite part of this song is definitely the point where it sounds like the track itself is breaking down at 6:43. It’s like Gabriel's emotions are becoming so intense that the music can’t portray it properly and starts peaking like a microphone picking up too loud of a sound.

He's copeing at V1 but starts to feel alive so to speak because the "will of the father isn't protecting him anymore and he actually feels pain for the first time, and that probably only fuels his fire even more during that fight.
his emotions were becoming intense and uncontrollable, even primal. this part of the fight shows him exit his enraged state because he's begun to feel excited and actually WANTS to rend V1 (playe4 character) apart instead of being duty-bound to do so.

The songs reflect the story and characters of the game very eloquently. Who would've thought that a game with such a minimalist, retro type of graphics and design has such a powerful and detailed soundtrack. The songs in this game can be used as a story narrative in on itself. That is why i love you doing this because it just shows how much a person could take away from the themes, motives and traits of the characters just by having a more in depth analysis.
Also to note: Hakita, the developer of this game who also made the soundtrack, uses a lot of leitmotif repetition as stylistic tools in his music. Some tracks in the game connected to a setting or a character are always very similar but slightly modified. The second track you listened to happens in the second fight with Gabriel, one of the main antagonists in the game. A powerful, egoistic and short tempered Angel who was tasked to basically fix Hell after some things in the story happened. By this point in the story, Gabriel already encountered the player's character, V1 and fought against him. V1 in the story is a man-made killing machine gone rampage as its only way to uphold its 'life source' is by killing demons and other robots for blood they feed off of. Gabriel hates V1 with passion as he sees him as an easy obstacle. After being proven wrong when the player defeats him, Gabriel starts to question his power and ability to fulfill "God's Will" (hence the track's title). Gabriel is then persecuted by God's council after returning to Heaven. They punish him for not fulfilling his duty and cleansing Hell of all its imperfections. To prove himself worthy, he sets out to fight V1 again, though his motives are mostly filled with rage and egoistic hatred (imperfect hatred).
When you encounter Gabriel again in the Heresy layer of Hell (the levels are modeled after the story Dante's Inferno and are heavily inspired by its setting and themes) he is playing the organ in an empty, blood soaked cathedral where you fight him. After approaching him. Gabriel looses his temper and slams on the keys, then gives the monologue you hear after the first track.
The track during the fight is a more detailed, faster and more rhythmic version of the track played in the first fight with Gabriel ("Divine Intervention" which hints at Gabriel's role in the game), which shows how his anger has exponentially grown after swearing to refurbish his dignity.
After being beaten yet again, Gabriel is left confused and starts to question his own motives and the influences which led up to that point, which is heard in his voice at the end of this soundtrack. In a "post-credits scene", he retreats into seclusion to contemplate about his role which was given to him by the council and question his beliefs, to ask himself if cleansing Hell is actually for the greater good. In his introspection he comes to the realization that his egoism and lust for power has been forced upon him by the council and their ways of corrupted reign, which in his eyes are no longer the ones God taught them to follow. No longer wielded by the will of another but his own, Gabriel returns to Heaven and slaughters every member of God's council, thus cutting himself from God and the blessing which was bestown upon him by the council. Due to this, his life has been cut short and has only a few hours to live. This does not bother him as he knows he did the right thing and freed the people of Heaven from their tyranny. The only task that is left is to defeat V1 and stop its rampage once and for all.
Though we still haven't seen the continuation of the game as it is not finished by this point.
In my opinion, Gabriel is one of the most fleshed out characters in a majority of games i played. He has motives which change over time and show how reason influences his character progression. Blinded by hate beforehand, he now became a much more powerful and dangerous enemy to the protagonist as he cannot be stopped by this point, which parallels V1s abilities in game as a relentless killing machine.
i don't know if anyone's gonna read this fully but i just love to rant about things i like.

I have two sides...
I wanna play Ultrakill just from the soundtrack alone. This one specifically felt like someone grieving stopping at the second step, rage, and staying there forever. The voice actor is also killing it so hard.

My guy gabriel lived his life enacting god’s will committing atrocities in the name of ‘god’. Yet when he first loses to the player, he realises that god has been long absent and the power of heaven is weakening. This fight represents his rage and misplaced trust in not only the very council of heaven he enacted his life to following, but himself for being so negligent. Gabriel is the whole reason behind Minos’ story - he was the one who was sent to unjustly kill him from the orders of his superiors. After beating him and realising his own mortality, Gabriel kills the council he served for his whole life. The mellow track is gabriel’s inner thoughts as he looks back on his life and reflects. Very accurate deductions as usual! Loved the vid!
Small correction: After first fight with V1, Gabriel's faith is shaken, but he still believes in god while thinking all his negative feelings are just hatred for V1. After second fight is when he completely loses his faith, kills entire tyrannical Council and frees citizens of Heaven and goes back to hell with only few hours to live left to fight against machine for the final time.

I actually think that Gabriel is the main character... Not V1. I honestly kinda want him to change his ways and then in some final fight when it seems unwinnable, he descends into the battle to fight side by side with you. Such an amazing character.
Sadly, Gabriel has too much pride to fight beside something he considers an abomination. However I think, you eventually have to fight God lol

V1 is like the protagonist in souls games, a blank slate who can come in and experience the incredible stories of those who inhabit its universe instead of really being a part of it in an important way

Something that you probably noticed is that the track at certain points froze like a computer (it was most prominent at the end) almost like the track is breaking. This is an intentional part of the track. This song is very similar to Gabriel’s first boss track in chapter one (it uses the same instruments and similar rhythms but faster). This reflects Gabriel’s mental and emotional state. He’s not just angry, he’s broken to such a degree that half way through the second fight, he starts laughing and goes from says stuff like “TIME TO RIGHT MY WRONGS” “I’LL SHOW DIVINE JUSTICE” “YOU’RE GETTING RUSTY MACHINE” to “Now this is a fight worthy of God’s Will” “Come on Machine, fight me like an animal” “So this is what you see in bloodshed, I show you true splendor”. He goes from wanting revenge to enjoying the fight. He becomes full obsessed and crazy. He starts to break his own track essentially.
Also, forgot to mention this. In this level, Gabriel was the one playing the Organs after the beginning part of his speech, and when you get close to him, he slams the Organs shut and the music just cuts out.

Oh yeah, just as a little heads-up, Hakita wrote Gabriel's fight theme for ACT II nine hours before the update dropped. He procrastinated on it for that long, and still made an absolute banger.

You nailed it with the description. When the fight starts, Gabriel gets the ENRAGED effect, and then loses it when you hit phase 2. And in the sad tune at the end, which plays in the cutscene after the level, Gabriel is questioning his very existence and his purpose as an angel, a servant of God.
1) 6:40 That transition after Gabriel yells "LET'S SETTLE THIS!" was absolutely perfect
2) At 5:48 Gabriel says "You need more power!" At this point this is the second time you fight him and Gabriel is trying his damndest to beat you this time. He tries to taunt you with the things he says but also what he says is an effort to try and make himself feel like he is the unbeatable angel of heaven he's supposed to be
Those lines are devil may cry references. Gabriel is basically a massive Vergil reference. I doubt they have any lore significance.
this one is an absolute treat. fun fact: Hakita made this track 9 hours before the big update it was a part of released (it wasnt finished, but it's still very impressive). cant wait for whats to come, since P-2, the level that is gonna be basically like the one with Minos in it, is releasing very soon! i have no doubt that what Hakita has got cooking up is incredible, and incredibly difficult. loved your reaction and im looking forward for more ultrakill!!!

One thing I love about Hakita as a composer: he draws inspiration from an extremely diverse range of sources, with main influences being rather obscure and hard to get into bands that specialize in genre bending, and he wears those influences on his sleeve, proudly, but without flattering imitation.

ultrakill has one off the most creative soundtracks i ever seen in a game in one second you be dancing with the guitar riffs and then you be hearing classical music the next you just dont see this stuff often i am glad you are covering this game

5:02 Funny you should mention that, that feeling is also tied into the mechanics of Gabriel's 2nd fight, where instead of starting off calm and collected before descending into his enraged mode, he starts off the 2nd fight enraged and then transitions to his calm and collected (relatively speaking) mode during the 2nd half of the fight.

Gabriels first emcounter with V1 , a vampiric war machine that all it wants is blood to survive , crusades down to hell to kill the dead peoples souls for more blood , heavens council doesnt likes this so they send gabriel to stop V1
Gabriel at the end of the gluteny floor awaits him and gets absolutely bodied by the war machine
While gabriels hatred to this machine gets even bigger, calling V1 "YOU INSIGNIFICANT FUCK, THIS IS NOT OVER" and leaves . Heavenly council noticing this and takes away gabriels angelic powers, gives him 24 hours to survive

The game in every way, tells the story of gabriels hatred to V1 with music, quotes , setting up the boss fight, wasnt enough...
The game has a mechanic called "enraged", some enemies gets stronger and faster under certain conditions
Gabriel starts the fight enraged and his quotes are more hatefull and talking down on us
But when second phase comes in the "enraged" status, goes away and starts laughing , having enjoyment to the fights which his quotes also becomes taunting V1 "COME GETS SOME BLOOD"
After his loss to V1 again, he spends hours on thinking about his life, his existence as a warrior of heaven , and before his last few hours left
Gabriel notices that the council is poisoned... god is gone yet the council acts as their wills are gods wills, tired of this nonsense , gabriel kills every single member of council and ready to show how they were free from the council , shows the decapitated head of the council leader to everybody in the cosmos and walks away
The 3rd act of this game still havent released but it is called "god fist suicide" which probably will be along with the full release of the game, i dunno, the leade developer made hours long live streams about single trumpet noises
One of the best part of this entire game , none of this context matters to V1 s crusade down to hell

The industrial and metallic drums and guitar for V1 and the Violin (I think) and more churchy music for Gabriel.
The line "I will grind you down until the very sparks cry for mercy!" is one of the most Metal lines ever written and it goes so much harder than it has any right to.

haven't seen anyone mention it but the organ part in the beginning of the track is adapted from JS Bach's BWV 639, "I call to you, Jesus Christ". (a bit spoiler-y from just past here but without much detail) i always felt the chords to be sad and mourning, even regretful or longing; like a man at the end of his life, calling out, praying to whatever is listening. a hymn filled with sorrow, looking for closure. it reflects gabriel in that way, i think - he's angry, hateful, but more than that he's been hurt, he's (presumably) at the end of his life, and he feels lied to.

I love how this arrangement is how it mirrors Gabriel's journey throughou the game. It is reminiscent of his previous boss theme, which goes to show he's still acting out of his convictions and pride. But that pride was deeply wounded after he lost to a mere machine, and he desperately seeks reparation for that. And then, towards the end... the theme glitches. Gabriel lost, *again* to a machine. His pride is now completely shattered. His entire world came crashing down around him. And he laughs at the absurdity of it all. Gabriel breaks. And he retreats to piece himself back together. But it won't be the same as before. It can never be, not anymore.
it's probably full of rage because it was composed and soundfonted in _4 hours_ for the update's release.
when playing Ultrakill you get so immersed into the game that sometimes you dont even listen to the amazing music, but then when you go back and listen to it over and over, oh god its golden

Yessss! More Ultrakill, please- Hakita put so much effort into creating a distinct feel for each layer, level, and encounter. My personal favorites are Into the Fire, Castle Vein, Dune Eternal, Death Odyssey, and Tenebre Rosso Sangue- but the tracks flow so well into each other and tell you so much about the journey that the story represents, I would really say that the best way to experience them is through the two OST albums Hakita posted to his youtube channel. If you still do full OST livestreams, I think Ultrakill would be the perfect subject.
I also wanna hear him react to the Cybergrind but that is a long, *long* stretch
I suggest you take a look at the first version of Gabriel's theme I believe it was called divine intervention it really gives you a good grasp of just how different he is at first in comparison to his second encounter

So i know this video is a little old now but i figured id give some context:
This song plays during the SECOND time you fight Gabriel. After your first encounter, he is exiled and disowned by the angels of heaven, and left with only rage and a desire to kill the machine that stole his divinity. But it also plants the seeds for what happens after your boss fight where he finally comes to terms with the idea of "god is dead", and he eventually goes on a killing spree in heavens court, killing the council of supreme angels, now knowing that he has nothing more to lose
the death of god's will is gabriel's second theme which is a noticeably more chaotic version of his first theme which is far more elegant and "holy" sounding. compairing this to his first theme, divine intervention, you can really feel that this is after his unchecked ego has been THOUROUGHLY shattered
The camera focus right as Gabriels voice cracks make it seem like his rage was so extreme it cracked the camera
This boss fight starts with Gabriel in the enraged mode with the dark dimly lit arena and when you finishes his first health bar he goes to his default mode and the arena lights up, he starts letting out a few laughs here and there as he's forgotten his hate, and is starting to enjoy himself in that fight, fully there in the moment.
I do love that Gabriel is literally playing a massive pipe organ in-game.

part of why this is so dramatic is because Gabriel is losing his shit fighting you, (due to some circumstances) he enters the fight with the mentality of "I get no more second chances. Either I win this fight and everything returns to normal, or I lose and E V E R Y T H I N G is over." So when he realizes that he is losing he kinda loses his mind.
(also when I said everything in the quote I mean literally everything, hell, his life, heaven, existence itself)

a bit late but
my favorite part of this song is that we've already heard it before, this is our second time we've fought him, and the build-up to this is also quite similar to the first time. Even Fallen Angel is a cover of the prelude song, Johann Sebastian Bach's I Call To You, Lord Jesus Christ. This version is tinged with so much more angst and hatred, which is perfect for the context that we hear it. The voice lines you hear during the fight are actual things he says, whether that's between his barrages of attacks or when you respawn.
I could talk about this one moment in the game for so long. *Everything,* the entirety of Act II: Imperfect Hatred has been building it up, ever since Gabriel vowed that if it was blood that the machines sought, then he would deliver it with such fury that even metal would bleed, we were waiting for this. The delivery of his lines is flawless too, the way his voice breaks, everything is perfect. the first time i heard him say "IS THIS WHAT I LOST TO?" got me so hard. this fight is so emotionally raw that even when he makes a pun all I can focus on is that hateful feeling of victory in his voice, finally getting one up on the thing that ruined him so completely, just. wow. "YOU'RE GETTING RUSTY, MACHINE"
also the most interesting thing to me is that he says that *you* need more power.

Deep Blue has to be my favorite song from ULTRAKILL, tied with altars of apostasy. Just the progression of both of the songs are just indescribable.

I would highly recommend to play the game, in order to contextualise the ost. There is a lot of interesting sondtracks in the game, and I feel like they are best experienced for the first time in the game itself, because there are many leitmotifs, that can be heard in normal levels, that bleeds in the boss music on many occasions.
The soundtracks you chose to react to are probably the strongest when it comes to contextualising the plot and feelings. Other strong soundtracks like versus, duel, requiem etc. should probably be first experienced in the game itself, just for the feelings you get when they kick in.
You could probably pick up a lot of things in other soundtracks as well, but the it is very tightly connected to the gameplay, and it would be a shame not to experience it the way, it was meant to be :D

I love this song cause even by the organ solo, you can hear that the height, the peak, that is God, is gone. Every scale up ends in a low note. And then, of course, Gabriel gives the most hateful speech in the history of history before losing his shit and dedicating his very being to destroying you and only you. Because there's no more "God" or "light", Gabriel is but a thing, driven by desire and bloodlust, exactly like our dear V1, your character, who is a robot that runs on blood of the ones he's killed.
In essence, Ultrakill is a symphony of gore and a masterpiece at that. I mean, this song? This beautiful, painful, heartfelt song? Yeah, the lead dev made it within 24 hours of release because he forgot to make a theme.
And he made this. Yeah. I think it's safe to say he knows what he's doing.
When it comes to unusual use of the organ, then "Tenebre Rosso Sangue" will simply blow the mind of anyone who is not used to hearing it in a non-liturgical key

The reason why Gabriel says stuff like “IS THIS WHAT I LOST TO?” Is because back at the gluttony layer Gabriel tried to defeat v1 (the player) and when trying to loses and the angels were not happy so he turned into a fallen angel and will die soon
