I've already done three videos but there are just so many obscure Atlus games I'm doing another one! If there are any I missed, let me know in the comments!
Intro by Lyric: / @lyric3595
Background by Leehzart: / leehzart1
#Atlus #AtlusFaithful #Gaming - Ігри
a game pretty similar to Odin Sphere is Muramasa: The Demon Blade (also made by Vanillaware!)
It also got a psvita rerelease with a better translation and extra story content in the form of DLC
Interestingly, both games play extremely similarly, and even the way things are animated is pretty close.
well that's because the re-release of Odin Sphere they changed the gameplay to be more action packed like it is in Muramasa, the original version that is also in the re-release is not that fast paced
I'm really hoping they rerelease muramasa at some point. I never finished the original version and lost it...
I was questioning why no mention of Muramasa or the other great games like Grand Kingdom but the video focused was on Atlus so Odin Sphere and 13 Sentinels were the only ones they assisted on
Stella Deus sprites are lovely, and as I'm currently in a T-RPG mood and didn't touch this game in 15 years (launched it, saved after the intro, kept it for "later" ) I think it's time to get back to it :)
Edit: Now that you mention it, the atrocious English dub rings a bell and must have participated in me keeping that game for "later" xD
To be fair you could always just mute or turn voices completely off and just use the subtitles. For dubs from the late 90's early 2000s I did that for the vast majority of Japanese localized games.
@@davidrosensin7985 Yet many games from that era don't have a slider for voices in audio options or don't have subtitles (particularly during FMV sequences) .
A fair point nonetheless :)
And thankfully nowadays having the option to choose between Japanese and English dub is a selling point.
Gwendolyn in the thumbnail made me click immediately. Odin Sphere (remake) is one of the most enjoyable games I ever played. The characters are all likable, the 2D visuals are breathtakingly beautiful, and the action gameplay is just *FUN.*
If you want to remember why you fell in love with video games, you owe it to yourself to play Odin Sphere.
I wish they would port the game to PC, that would make it accessible to a lot more people.
Along with Muramasa Rebirth and Dragon's Crown. Come on Atlus, these games deserve the exposure.
@@MaskedGuyCh Ask Vanillaware to make PC ports then. ATLUS only publish them... except Muramasa Rebirth as it's Aksys Games who published it.
I just can describe Odin Sphere with the word beautiful, really beautiful game in all his aspects, i have the platinum in my ps3 and is one my favorites games
I'm so glad you mentioned Stella Glow! The game is so good, and physicals are (say it with me, now) expensive on the second-hand market, so I hope people who want it can grab it off the eShop before it gets shut down.
I happily own most of the games in this video in some form, I've actually had Stella Deus saved on my PS3 for some time now, man it looks gorgeous! I kinda want go play it xD
You didn’t mention this one, but there’s also another mystery dungeon game published by Atlus. Its name is Izuna: The Unemployed Ninja, for the DS. I haven’t played too much of it so far, but it is no cakewalk!
Heck yeah! I loved that game! Izuna was really challenging to beat for me as a kid, i can breeze through it now but it's only thanks to all the experiences and knowledge i've gained in the game
It was really enjoyable, and that feeling of beating the bosses after being afraid of them for so long and pushing through every floor till the end... it was an awesome feeling...
Glad to see someone else who knows about, and I wish you luck in your journey! Oh, and never forget to bring a Kikan with you!
The pixel art on Stella Deus is brilliant. A great colour palette and wonderful character designs make this one of the best looking iso pixel art games during that time.
I like Stella Glow. I like the part where Mordi says "It's Mording time" and morded everyone.
Literally the game of all times
I was reading a book with a main character named "Morbus" when that meme was peaking :/
Mordius
I always wanted to play Stella Glow, even played the demo. I was just a bit sad that this game didn't come with japanese audio and then just forgot about it.
Odin Sphere is my second Vanillaware game (first game for me was Dragon's Crown). Must say, the game looks amazing (the art style is what drew me into the game), especially a game that was originally 2007. I will admit that I got bored as I played through different characters (part of it was me marathoning through the game, so it contributed to the monotony). But the overall feels and looks are phenomenal. Definitely a classic that I can recommend to anyone who's into 2D action game, just as Nyarly said in the video, it's recommended to play in short burst.
I haven't played Muramasa: The Demon Blade, another Vanillaware game that plays similarly to Odin Sphere. I would definitely like to get it one day just because I love the art style.
I played both Odin Sphere and Muramasa on my Vita and I loved them both. If I recall correctly (I played it some years ago) Muramasa is more fast-paced than Odin Sphere and harder in the challenge stages. The artstyle is just amazing in both.
I mean odin sphere's plot and story is incredible and i dont understand why you would marathoning the game
How has this man still not talked about Etrian Odyssey?
Shiren the Wanderer is awesome! For people who like games like Pokemon Mystery Dungeon this is the game that series got it's inspiration from. The mystery dungeon games are very fun, very addictive and very challenging!
Bought Tower of Fortune on Steam last years Christmas sale, p good
Like Your izunas or your mystery dungeons
Shiren the Wanderer is actually a spin-off of the Mystery Dungeon series. So you kinda have that backwards lol
Sorry but I think it’s Azure Dreams not Shiren the Wanderer that came the inspiration from. :)
@@lumorowenamooncaller9811 Shiren the Wanderer is not a spin-off... The entire series did start as a Dragon Quest spin-off but still.
Another pretty obscure game that was (published) by Atlus was Izuna: Legend of the Unemployed Ninja
It's also a Mystery Dungeon type game, and pretty challenging at first for beginners (or at least it was for me [TεT] ). It has a sequel too, but I haven't played it yet. I am replaying the first game tho, and it's been nice revisiting it, the nostalgia has been really fun to experience
You know, Stella Glow looks right up my alley as somebody who loves both Fire Emblem and Atlus games lol
I really wanna play a Fire Emblem games, just not sure where I should start lol
@@accountwontlastlong1 Three Houses is probably the most accessible at the moment being on the Switch, but until the end of August you also have access to all the games available on the 3DS and Wii U eShops. Among those, Awakening is hands down my favourite, and Echoes is a close second. Also available are Fates, which I’ll warn you don’t get the whole of the story content unless you purchase the Revelations route separately, and on the Wii U you can get the GBA entries, Fire Emblem and Sacred Stones, as well as the remake of the very first game on the DS.
Besides those, every other game is unavailable without dropping a lot of money on a physical copy (Radiant Dawn and Path of Radiance), or else hunting down a a translation for the games prior to the GBA titles, because Nintendo doesn’t want you to play their games lol
@@anewhero1216 Most pre-GBA Fire Emblem games have English fan translations available online though emulation. Even Fire Emblem 6 on GBA got one.
Also, most FE games before Awakening were HARD AF games, so much so that Nintendo didn't bother porting them overseas until fan interest grew for the series grew thanks to Roy and Marth's inclusions in Super Smash Bros Melee on GameCube. By the time Melee came out, Fire Emblem 7 was on its way out in Japan on GBA, so Nintendo finally brought the series overseas thanks to that one.
Since then, with the exception of the DS remake of FE 3, every mainline game came out in the West, each also including Casual Mode, which turns off permadeath aka the ONE feature that was one of the reasons it took this long for the series to come out elsewhere lol.
Glad to see more love for Stella Glow, the swan song of Imageepoch as well as the creators of Arc Rise Fantasia, another RPG that we enjoyed on the Wii.
Enjoyed both. The nostalgia is hard as we bought this game prior to going on vacation to Japan in back in 2015.
shiren the wanderer is an incredible series. the first roguelike i got into and helped me understand why folks love them so much
One other thing with Stella Glow is that on New Game Plus, characters will refer to a certain late game twist now that you the player know of it.
Thats only because you get triple the timeslots to get character supports, which lets you get supports that you would normally get closer to the endgame
Thanks for the recommendations! I will check these out! I love these videos! 5/5
I remember i bought Stella Deus on my ps3 but i could never win the first fight with that Viper guy. I tried to look on UA-cam and the one playing had some wierd robot in his team but i didn't and the lack of a tutorial just prevented me from playing it. I was so interested because i really liked the artstyle. But alas. Fortunatelly now i have a good pc and i can try to emulate it. Thanks for the reminder that this game exist.
Stella Glow is a 3DS gem and Shiren is... a pain simulator. If you're someone who rages easily at game, DO NOT play Shiren, this game (series) hates everyone equally and will make sure to screw you over on every occasion
Started playing shiren on steam, the very second dungeon I take one step and a lion man instantly reduces me to one hp, I use a teleport scroll to get away, the room I tp to is full of traps, one trap drops a bunch of giant bugs, use a speed scroll to run, run down a hallway blocked by another spider and die.
10/10
@@IPODsify HAHAHAHA! Welcome to Shinren!
I almost never rage at video games, but I can instantly remember moments where I was genuinely mad at shinren.
Facts, if you want a more dumbed down but way less frustrating version of Shiren, then I’d reccomend Pokémon Mystery Dungeon instead.
@@amirgarcia547 Oh no! It's a monster house!
thanks for the recommendations and I have to say I have been watching you for a while and your one of my favorite MegaTen youtubers. keep up the hard work
I like the reference to Rean Schwarzer, any callback to Trails is good in my book
Odin Sphere is one of my absolute favorite games. It's gorgeous and it's beautiful, and the characters are lively.
The artist for the characters in Stella Glow goes by Ideolo.
When I played the game, the artwork felt really familiar to me so I checked and sure enough.
I had known them from their Touhou artworks, can recommend checking it out.
You could do a bunch of videos of underrated NIS games. Especially with the classics collections
Shiren the Wanderer is also on PC btw
nice to see this video so soon.
Used to leave Odin Sphere's world map running on my tv while I did other things because was the music was so good
JUST SEEING THE THUMBNAIL IS JUST HYPE, I STILL HAVEN'T FINISH ODIN SPHERE BUT I LOVE THE GAMEPLAY
I just can't believe you played Stella Deus. And here I thought that game was a fever dream cause of the art work.
Odin Sphere has probably my favourite story of any game. Only other game that comes close is probably Grim Grimoire (it has a remaster that was announced in April and will hopefully see a worldwide release).
Yes, Odin Sphere is an amazing game on the PS4.
I'm actually really happy that you mentioned this wonderful gem, despite it's not as hidden anymore.
I clicked really hoping for Stella Glow mention, glad I wasn't disappointed.
Been obsessed with that game all Spring, its so good. Such an underrated gem of a 3ds game
Alliance Alive was pretty fun too..
Liked that I have one of them and played half of them this time
I will say on Stella Glow, chapter 8 onward is arguably what makes the game such a gem to so many people, myself included. At least play till then, although I get the early chapters are on the weaker side, gameplay wise.
I think your Rean Schwarzer reference flew over many's head 😂
I really liked the story and characters of “Stella Glow”! And the story hooked me right away. It’s usually on sale for super cheap on the 3DS eshop. I was lucky enough to pick up “Stella Deus” back when it released. I had already played “Nocturne” and “DDS”, and the art style reminded me of those games and was by the same company. It was my first SRPG actually! I didn’t know until I brought it home and played it! Lol. And “Odin Sphere” is awesome but the original PS2 release made smash a controller. The remaster has a lot of QoL improvements that make it a MUCH more enjoyable game with gorgeous graphics. I wish VanillaWare would put out more game! Like, I think a JRPG in that art style could be sick!
There's this obscure Atlus game called Advan Racing for the PS1. It features unlicensed cars but accurate liveries of the Japanese touring car series at the time.
And speaking of Atlus and racing games, they also were the publisher of Cave's Touge series of games. One of it made it worldwide under the name of Peak Performance.
Also, have you talked about Maken X in this series? It's got Kaneko art and Hashino direction.
You should totally check out Groove on Fight, it’s a PS1 fighting game developed by Atlus and the final boss is a Demon Summoner who’s attacks are the SMT Demons, it’s also the Arcade cabinet that the Protagonist plays in Persona 1
Nyarly mentions Rean: Instant like in the video. More people should play the Trails series.
Stella Glow is my favorite SRPG on the 3DS and the story is so good. I love Popo but god, I hate her name so much lmao
i think the term you are looking for in the "stella" games is: Tactics game; Fina Fantasy Tactics, Mercenaries Saga series, even Triangle Strategy are the same in this category
yo not gonna lie. that shadow fate game looks fun, the image of a edglord getting a strike and being hyped up is really cute
Can't wait for the title of the 5th video about this topic
I loved Stella Glow.
Stella Deus looks very nice.
Plz do more of these
odin sphere leifthreiser is a BEAUTIFUL game, I absolutely adored the style, the story, the gameplay is super engaging, just top tier.
Stella Glow is one of my favorite games for both story and music and it's unfortunate that the planned sequel won't get the light of day. Stella Deus I have yet to play but I bought after I found out about it back when the PS Store was closing.
It's been ages since I heard Stella Deus come up, and it's one of those games I barely got into, but I'd probably like it a lot more now
I played Odin Sphere back in the day. I like how one character sounds like Aigis. I see you focus on Healing Tonics. 17:32 She looks hot with her hair down ;3. 17:49 Eggman on steroids. It pisses me off that this game is still full price. You forgot to mention My World, My Way.
Stella Glow and Odin Sphere? Automatically a banger video honestly.
Dude I really thought you’d have ran out of games by now. Imagine having a complete Atlus collection; you’d never get bored
3:06 As an Italian I found hilarious that a character in this game is named Alto which means tall in italian. Or also Spero that means I hope. Anyways good video Nyarly, I think I'll play Stella Deus one day.
Oh dear god that ad is an RPG maker game. Oof, I recognize the edited assets.
This is like the first time I've ever wanted to play a game advertised to me lmao
Atlus is like some kind of eldrich being. The longer I stare at it, the more grasping, forgotten tendrils I see.
I never thought I'd see the day where others are talking about odin sphere and stella glow nowadays 😭 🖤🖤🖤
One game that I personally enjoy is called The Alliance Alive
Didn't realize it was an Atlus game until recently
Only for the 3DS version, NISA published the HD remake on modern platforms.
What if (like me) you have the Ps2 version of Odin Sphere? Also you know what was a neat little dungeon crawler jrpg from Atlus: Izuna: Legend of the unemployed ninja!
The combat system is slower and a bit poor compared to the remake, but the main point, its beautiful story and art, is basically the same.
Very nice to see another Izuna enjoyer in the vast sea of gaming fandoms
stella glow was really fun
Stella deus is fantastic love obscure atlas games.
I wish the games got more attention, like these games sound promising
I remember playing the demo of Stella Glow and I didn't like it, I thought it was very generic and the combat was simple, but I got it after I ran out of things to play, and after playing more of it I feel in love with the characters and the story, no, it's not a groundbreaking game but it became one of my favorites on the 3DS
LET GO FINALLY HE DID STELLA GLOW!
Loved the video
I haven’t played many atlus game (never even play SMT) but my favorite game from that I have played is dokapon kingdom for the wii
Stella Glow is a great game, but the soundtrack is incredible. Rarely get game songs randomly in my head years after playing but it joins Persona in that
I’m surprised with the mention of Stella Glow. I actually got the premium launch edition and played for an hour before my attention was shifted elsewhere and never touched it again. 7 years later and may need to come back to it
I usally dont do SRPG but I enjoyed stella glows visuals and characters enough to get through it.
Yes such classics as:
-A ninja that dresses like a stripper and wears a cardboard box on her head
-a Witch that lives in a snow region but wears similar amount of clothing like the aforementioned ninja
-a guy named Dante, whos weapon is named Virgil and has the same VA as Masayoshi Shido from P5
-a girl that stabs her enemies by stabbing herself AND her target
-a scientist thats multiple thousand years old but still looks like maybe 30something because she eats fried wings of angels
Stella Glow is like Luminous Arc x Ar Tonelico, a really wonderful game, at least if you like those 2 series. I was addicted to it.
I loved Odin Sphere and I wish I could get Stella Glow, but then there is that Steam Summer sale going in.
Steam summer sale happens every year, the 3DS eshop only works (for buying at least) until i think march 2023, while you are unable to add money to your account from August onward
@@marcjehle2480 Okay, I was just saying that I usually spend my money in one place at a time to save.
Oh, I love odin Sphere
Yoooo odin sphere getting some love
Catherine will always be close to my heart
Gotta cover the very obscure 360 exclusive (and only in Japan and North America) Atlus game "Operation Darkness". Plays just like Fire Emblem.
Video 4 of me requesting Nyarly to check out Master of the Monster Lair and My World, My Way. They've only gotten harder to find now post-quarantine given they're both obscure DS games.
I would love to play Odin Sphere, but I'm waiting for it to come out on steam
Odin Sphere is my favourite videogame of all time. If you ever have the chance to play it, you wouldn't regret it. I hope that after having 13 Sentinels on Switch, Vanillaware decides to release more of their games on this console. I still want to play Dragon's Crown.
Never played Odin Sphere, but I played Muramasa on the Wii which looks similar to this one although more simplistic.
itd be cool if you mention choro Q for the ps2 that game was my childhood
Stella Glow was a very fun game.
etrian mystery dungeon is pretty fun even if im bad at it lol/ i got it by chance. still trying to get original EO2 and 3, but eo3 costs like an arm and a leg ;-;
Radiant Historia is a great game too :)
He spoke about it in a previous video.
Robopon 2 is a gem
I played the original Odin Sphere on PS2 and it's still one of my favourite games of all time. From what I've seen of the PS4 version, the combat has been greatly improved but also greatly extended, which explains your comments of being monotonous. I also think the new added skills probably make the game much easier, because this game was HARD in PS2. Getting over leveled was particularly difficult and bosses hit incredibly hard if you did not memorise their patterns and dodged constantly.
But the story is the highlight of the game, one of the best ones I've seen and one of my favourite love stories as well.
I have the Ps4 version but haven't picked it up. Perhaps it's time I do that and relive this game. :)
I've played both the PS2 version and the remake (it's my absolute favourite game of all time), and I wouldn't say that the remake makes the game easier. It's more fluid and it makes the combat more enjoyable, of course, but the difficulty is still there. I remember, for example, how broken Gwendolyn was in the original. One of her skills made her invulnerable and other created a shadow that repeated her movements and could hit enemies even if Gwendolyn herself was invulnerable. With enough phozons, she could trivialize any boss battle.
Apart from that case, good use of potions can make things easy in both the original and the remake. It's just that the remake made the combat so good and fluid (Muramasa was clearly important regarding this evolution) that you want to push it to its limits, explore combos and leave things like potions aside until they are truly necessary (at least that was my case).
Agh, what a good game, I wanna play it again.
I'm just surprised to see an RPG Maker game do a sponsor (And I'm gonna keep the game's existence in mind, cause of course I will, I love RM). Lol.
Also, not sure what games you've already covered on previous obscure games lists, but Radiant Historia (Both versions) and The Alliance Alive (Also both versions but the Switch one is the objectively better version) are great games I'd totally recommend.
Honorable mention to The Legend of Legacy, since The Alliance Alive improved upon its foundation (Tho I can't remember if that one was published by ATLUS or not (Same devs tho)).
15:20 Muramasa and the demon blade is another great vanilla ware game.
Stella Glow sounds like the Ar Tonelico / Nosurge series. Also, sound was from Yasunori Mitsuda, so always a banger. Also, did you ever check out Hoshigami: Ruining Blue Earth ?
Stella Deus is absolutely underrated.
Stella Glow is great and definitely worth playing. As for Shiren the Wanderer, the 5th game in the series (Tower of Fortune and the Dice of Fate) is better and a lot more accessible as its on Switch and PC. As for Stella Deus, I should probs check that out at some point myself.
How does the tuning and song magic of Stella Glow compare to the Genometrics and song magic from the Ar Tonelico/Ar Nosurge series?
I played the first and second Luminous Arc and I thought they were very good, it was back them when i was starting on RPGs but anyway i think anyone should give them a try if they like SRPGs.
Oh and i also recommend Stella Deus, just play it undub.
Needless to say Odin Sphere Leifthrasir is one of the best games I have ever played, if you feel tired just stop after 2 or 3 stories and continue later.
lmfao he said Rean Schwarzer. Love the list.
Tbh, the fact that nayrla knows who rean is makes me smile a bit
Holy Shit! Someone else that remembers Stella Deus. Also Odin Sphere doesn't get enough credit. The remaster found a way to look and play even better. Expanded systems and gameplay options. It's a great example of making a great game better.
It's worth mentioning that with Odin SPhere, the PS2 version has almost completely different gameplay from the current version.
Yes, it's like a difference between Dark souls and Devil May Cry.
LETS GO HE TSLKED ABOUT STELLA DEUS MASSIVE W
I really want Dragons Crown Pro on steam
Yeahh, for me, Stella Glow is kinda like Ar Tonelico being made into SRPG, I'm surprised that it's not as popular cus it's real fun~ XD
Spero looks like grown up Ken.
