Deck Comparison: How Does Tarot of the Sweet Twilight Compare to the RSW? Is it a Rider Deck?

  • I recently acquired the Tarot of the Sweet Twilight. It's an unsual deck that really appeals to the 90s teen in me. It's a little confounding in some of its art choices when it comes to depicting the meanings of the cards, so I decided to see how it compares to the Smith Waite.
Can Sweet Twilight be classed as a Rider based deck? Is it kind of its own thing?
Come along for the rambly ride!

WOW! Thank you so much for this video, Kelly.
This deck has always been a Yes/No and never got to decide myself about it. Now I've done it.
    Greetings from Spain

It seemed to be all over the place a few years back but it's definitely been less prevelant recently. Time for a resurgence maybe?

I love the Sweet Twilight but I need it in a borderless matte version. Maybe we need to get away from requiring decks to have the old symbols as long as they give us visual clues to meaning, but then we're faced with hundreds of micro-systems to navigate! To me the cards can be like melody in a song that a musician can embellish or interpret in different ways approaching it with different musical styles, but you never want to totally lose the melody! ❤

A borderless, matte edition would be lovely!
I know what you mean about the same old symbols, it's a tricky line to tread between getting the idea of the meaning across and doing it in an interesting and fresh way. I've seen many decks that can get across a RWS card menaing with a different kind of illustration, for sure. Yet some decks seem to be saying something entirely different about a card's meaning and like you said, that leads to lots of decks/systems that kind of do their own thing...and that can get confusing.
Thank you for watching Nancy. x

I just got this deck too Kelly. The art, colours and less traditional look all spoke to me...
But I wondered if perhaps Id have some issues reading with it.
Im going to give myself some time to do a more indepth deck study to rrally try and dig in and getbto know it.
Tjank you sl much for the comparison. Just what I meeded.
    😊 🙌

The origami Yoda in the strength card was what once made me buy the deck ... it is an existing model, by Fumiaki Kawahata, that I folded about a decade ago, such a challenge, and a lot of frustration and wasted paper on the way, but such a delight when I finally managed to do it, and it looked great, and I felt like a master origamist (which I'm not, but the experience absolutely boosted my skills and made me confident to try other challenging models too). Yes, Strength card, definitely.
(btw if you want to give the Yoda a try, UA-camr Jo Nakashima has instruction video, but I only recommend for people who have mastered the origami basics and / or have patience and paper to spare)

Oh wow! How cool! I think I don't know if my origami skills would be able to make one but it could be a fun challenge one day. Who doesn't love Yoda?! Although Grogu has stolen my heart a little bit.

"I bet he's playing Wonderwall" 😂. I have this deck fully trimmed. I find it kinda confusing, which is probably exactly how it wants to me viewed. Like, I don't know if I should take it really seriously or not at all. So, as you mentioned, great for inner teenager readings, I suppose. I just got the Mother Mort's Carnival of Souls oracle and watching this walkthrough made me want to try them together. I noticed there is a Hugo Simberg connection in both (Simberg card on the oracle deck and Simberg's Wounded Angel painting as the 6oS in the tarot deck), so maybe that's a thing to explore. Thanks for doing this in your style ❤. I feel inspired to get the deck out and get a bit emo with it, iykwim 😉

Ooh, I haven't looked at the Carnival of Souls Oracle yet, I know I'll probably love it (trying not to get tempted as I'm just trying to work with the decks I have for now). Excellent spot for the Simberg painting on the 6S, I wouldn't have noticed that as I'm not so familiar with his work. Hehe, yeah! Get your EMO on! x

My kid forbid me to trim the deck. She said, it is supposed to be a smart phone, with a magical camera, that takes the images not of how we see it in the real world, but what's going on in the dream world/ otherword/ magical world/ our inner word... whatever one want's to call it. That's maybe why the images have this strange line between them and the borders, it's where the screen starts (like back when there were no "near-borderless smartphones" ). Now, whenever I think about trimming it, I feel I can't because I'd destroy my magical phone...

@@khan7459 That's so interesting. I can totally see it. Thank for this insight. I'll be sure to look at the deck through the lens of the ethereal smart phone next time (although mine is now borderless). I hope the dream realm isn't seeping into my waking life too bad 😊.

@@MB-fk6nf 😅 let's hope the wake up function hasn't been trimmed off then...
My girl couldn't believe I was so stuck under my stone to not immediately recognise that deck as a screen....

I've seen a trimmed copy and it looks so good! But fir me I think it will be a no.
I like to keep titles on my trimmed decks anyway, but I think image wise it might make it far too hard to read.... at least for now.
      Time will tell.
      👍 😊
