  • My impression of Utrecht's record fair. The prices are getting insane as I'll show you in the video.

    You are absolutely right about the prices at Utrecht. I went to every fair there right from the very first one in 1993 up to 2012. I went initially as a stall holder and later just as a buyer to pick up stuff to re-sell online. I stopped going because the prices were just getting insane as you say, especially on the Hard Rock and Metal stuff. It became impossible to buy enough stock to make the trip from England financially viable. Too many of the sellers there just got too greedy and it backfired on them because their stock remained unsold.

    I totally agree with you that the prices are through the roof ! I am at odds with the vinyl resurgence.
    For one, it has made it easier to get copies of rare records.
    Two. Good quality reprints in 180 g
    Three.. more options and stores making it easier to find items
    Four. They are printing even recent Artists on vinyl such as nirvana, Radiohead, Coldplay and weezer.
    But for me it's about the music.. it's not about the most expensive record(s) I like saving things not in pristine condition.
    It's a fun and addicting hobby . But it's more than that.. owning your music , organizing it and listening to it in high quality without a password is priceless.
    Plus it takes you back when you had to sit and listen to a whole album. In a time where artists were not worried about just a single but making sure the whole album had a narrative.
    The hipster and resurgence will die down .. and they will move on to the next trendy thing ..
    But the true vinyl junkie will outlast this fad and the market will self regulate again..

    One: Those "high priced" records find their buyers. You'd be surprised how people shell out their cash. Two: If you want to have the rarities, you pay well for it. As you mention, there are a lot of one/two Euro stalls. Three: Normally I go to the Utrecht fair in November. This time it was my first one in April. I've been told that the Spring fair has always had a lower attendance than the Fall one.

    • @TheMichiel1976
      @TheMichiel1976  6 років тому

      Not really. At the fair a couple of weeks ago, the attendance was even lower. I didn't film any footage from that fair, but it was even more expensive. Luckily, I have some friends there so that will be he primary reason for me to go the next time. Thank you for watching.

    Can't get over those prices at the end. I see that a Davy Graham (on Decca) was part of the auction stock, I got one (of his early Decca releases) recently for real cheap at a flea market. These fairs are interesting as a spectacle but not for the regular collector, I suppose. Thanks for sharing.

      The prices are indeed insane. I don't know what the auction price was, but Midnight Man on discogs goes from 150 pounds and up. Don't be despared though. There are some excellent vendors there, from whom i buy every single year. The problem is, that more and more vendors also sell very wanted and collectible items for a tonload of money. Thanks for watching Ben!

      +The 76 Vinyl Junkie midnight man was the one I found showed in my last vid got it effectively for €25. The release after it ("large....") was the one they auctioned.

    Hey there, just found your channel! And subbed :) Great recap, I really enjoyed it. I was there in November '14, it looks even more huge now, wow! And the prices are getting more ridiculous each year as it seems. The Shiver - Walpurgis for 1100... holy shit, that is upright ridiculous - it's a good one, and the OG goes for a lot of money, but not that much. Insane prices... maybe that's why it starts to draw less attendees. Great footage though! Much love from Germany, Diana

      @TheMichiel1976  7 років тому

      +diggininthecr8 thanks for the kind words! Yes, prices are getting insane and it's just waiting for the vinyl collapse. The market is also getting flooded with bootlegs as well, which hurt the labels that are putting out cool stuff like. OG releases are highly overrated tbh. Thanks for watching!

    I think the rarest record I've got is a Japanese import double A side Led Zep single ⚡ good times bad times and communication breakdown ⚡ I had all my picture discs and coloured vynils stolen a while ago ⚡ some good stuff to like I'm an upstart on green and in picture cover, teenage warning on red and in picture cover, not sure if they would be worth anything today though 😜

    Goed om weer eens een video van je te zien. Mooie impressie! Gelukkig niet zoveel volk. Hahah, die prijzen zijn gewoon komisch. De 2 platen van 1000 euro op het laatst komen bekend voor, heb een repress van beide. Eh, eigenlijk de bootleg, maar dat krijg je met zulke prijzen. Fijne Pasen nog. /Paul

    Maybe the unrealistic & exaggerated prices have driven attendances down this year. And that's not a bad sign at all.

    • @TheMichiel1976

      I went there on saturday and I just didn't bother to film. It's the same, but prices where about 5% up again. Also a lot of bootlegs and new records. I'm even doubting if I'm going back in April.

      I was just going to ask the percentage of new vs old, but your answer here answers my question. Other than new artists coming out with new records, I hate new represses and the like. I´m going to hate it even more when they start popping up in thrift stores.

      @@TheMichiel1976 Very interesting. I go to a record fair in London that runs every 2 weeks. I am noticing an increase in stalls selling brand new albums that look like bootlegs of old material and fewer stalls selling second hand records. If this continues I will stop going.

      They release a limited amount of each record and are usually out of stock after a couple of hours. Your best bet is Ebay or Discogs. Some releases are cheap, but some are really expensive. The record was Helloween - Chameleon, original pressing + inserts 1993.

    • @PowerrayX
      @PowerrayX 7 років тому

      heb ik mooi de re-release gekocht van Chameleon, scheelt me enkele tientjes :p dacht die atrocity te koop stond op de stand van NOTVD of niet ?

    • @TheMichiel1976
      @TheMichiel1976  7 років тому

      Oh, dat klopt maar die was niet van notvd zelf, maar van de vendor waar hij bij stond. Dat was een Duitser en ik ben vergeten wat zijn site was. Atrocity is wel een dure aanschaf overigens.

    Those high prices for unknown records are usually the prog-psych obscure stuff. A high collectible rock style....but the few who pays that Money are usually collectors which collect records for over 40 years and they allready have all the mainstream stuff or big dealers, who will sell even more expensive the same álbum next year . Those records will be allways expensive and they keep growing the price and allways get a buyer. The real problema is that lots of ignorant people try to put high ridiculous prices in normal records, like iron maiden, motorhead, ac/dc, etc....those records are very much above its real price....more then those ultra megastronomic raretys. 95% of the sellers dont have rare records....but they think they have, so..

  • @sammencia7945
    @sammencia7945 3 роки тому

    If you think 80+% of vendors are too expensive, the issue is with you - not the vendors.
    Don't want to pay that price?
    Don't buy it.

      You gotta keep in mind this:
      In 1976 the Global Middle Class was 300 million people in Western Europe, UK, Australia, NZ, Canada and the USA.
      In 2021 the Global Middle Class is now 4,300 million people.
      And they all want a first pressing of Soft Parade, Nevermind and Hank Mobley.
      Supply and Demand; the Rock Era is over as well...and Universal let 100,000s of master tapes burn up in 2008.
      Those vinyl records will only go up in value.
      PVC also lasts centuries and PROPERLY played vinyl has zero wear when examined under a microscope.

    I have seen, not so many years ago sell "RARES" of those on display at that fair at auctions on eBay, shops and in person at record markets in the Netherlands, outdoors in summer for much less than the prices I have seen in several Videos on UA-cam of the Utrecht fair. Since there is a hype of vinyl stop buying automatically. Prices have gone up a lot everywhere, it sucks to buy at these prices. Fucking speculators and stupid hypers.
