My boa often holds on to me when he notices that I want to put him back in the enclosure. Or he quickly crawls in the opposite direction to make it as difficult as possible for me. As a rule, I only take the boa out when it is very active, exploring its enclosure or watching me with interest through the glass. On these days the boa really enjoys the handling and explores my apartment without immediately hiding somewhere to sleep. He really likes to be carried on my shoulders and inspect every nearby object with his tongue. He particularly likes the shower curtain because it rustles and moves when he plays with it. And of course he climbs everything that is within reach. He also knows where he's not allowed to go, but ignores it until I make it clear to him that I don't want him there. Then he leaves it for the “current session”, meaning he is definitely capable of learning.

My baby corn is the same. I also have braids in my hair, and he loves to get tangled up in them. I don't like to let him do that for long, though, cause I'm always scared he's going to poop in my hair 😬

Hey! This is so helpful. I've had my ball python for 4 months and this is something I still need to work on.
Also, at the end I know you said you have humid hides at your Etsy shop.
But I definitely heard "human hides" then imagined a huge version of a snake hide sitting in a corner. 🤣😂

Glad you mentioned about enrichment outside the tank . Lot of people get reptiles from pet stores and ask them info think their tank is big enough & good enough for a reptile to live their life & they need to come out of their environment and see the world or at least bedroom

Target training, or some other kind of specific feeding ritual, (moving them to a feeding tank etc.) is also a great way for your snake to not think of your hand as food. Adopting an older snake (with an established personality and quirks and socialization etc.) rather than a baby can also be a much better introduction to handling. People underestimate how important and difficult the balance is to handle them often enough so they get used to you and also to give them the space they need to feel safe (on top of every species, and every individual snake, being different!)

Seconding that some snakes don't need the full week in a new place. My ball python girl Xena came to me on a Saturday and the next Thursday came right to me to be held when I was changing her water. She loves being out more than any snake I've had in the past

I have two 2 year old BP's with very different personalities - both male. I am in Yorkshire, UK. Bo is very adventurous and always on the move - I'm thinking of building a small climbing frame for him. At Christmas time, he came out of his den and watched me put the Christmas tree up (as it was at the side of his viv)....Reggie, on the other hand, is so laid back and just loves snuggles. When he's in blue and I'm changing his water, he comes towards me (even though he can't see) and still wants to snuggle - I think he's the exception to the rule. I was very wary of any type of snake but, I've fallen head over heels in love with them both. How do you get them to go back in their vivs? My two do not want to go back after being out for around half an hour - I always give in and let them have another ten minutes. It's like having toddlers again 🤣

Haha love that! Sterling has the issue of not wanting to go back too. I just sit there and wait, and then gently put him back once he starts to go back 😅 usually takes a while (that's that last clip in the "putting them back" section haha)

@@ellesreptiles I typed this before I got to the last sections lol - I've also showed my husband the enrichment board video (I'm disabled so not able to do DIY) - he's going to get the bits he needs this week to make one - it's such a fantastic idea x

I didn't know about enrichment boards, cool! I just got my first snake, a hognose. He's been striking at me, until yesterday! I used the snake hook and lightly stroked the side of his body to let him know I was there. He was chill, so I picked him up with the hook, then he chilled out with me for the first time!!! My husband can pick him up with no issue. They don't strike him. I'm super jealous!
Thanks for making this vid! It's super helpful. 😀

When i first got my BP, I cycled used shirts so that she associated my scent with her territory. She very much prefers me to other people now. Once, when she was nervous with my brother, I gave him one of my dirty shirts and she curled up on top of his shoulder...

I don't have a snake, but the other day I went to Animal Trax and held some baby corn snakes...They were so fast Katelyn had to help rangle each for me cause I'm old and move slow. One almost made it to the floor, another went up my sleeve, which was hilarious! Then she gave me a ball python to hold and it was so slow,so mellow!
So my question is how to deal with flighty faster than the speed of light baby snakes?
    Do they ever slow down?
Now I know the real reason I love geckos, they are slooooooow.
I don't use Instagram,so you most likely won't see this.

I love your videos so much, you inspire me and bring me so much knowledge. I’ve always liked snakes and owned a corn snake not a while ago but she tragically passed away from a virus.. I’m planning on getting a ball python now for the past month and a half I couldn’t stop thinking about it, and you have taught me so much, I really appreciate your effort into your videos, keep up the good work!🫶

Elle, I have a baby corn snake that just turned 5 months...I've had him 2 months now. I won't bore you with the details as I definitely making some newbie mistakes. I think I have fixed them now. I was talking to my husband before the baby came home and telling him what my dilemma was with my first corn snakes when it came to feeding. I knew I did not want to take him out everytime I fed him and put him in another box. Dealing with some health issues. After watching Bryan Barcyk's team feed some of their reptiles with the blue ball method, and my husband added that if I make a particular sound to let him know I am there and I have food! So, I usually locate him before I thaw his meal that way we have less movement at feeding time. I've got the f/t pinky in my tongs, and I tap on whichever hide he's in to let him know I'm there. I'm telling you what, that baby snake caught onto that just after his first meal with me. If I'm going in just to do something in his tank, I don't tap on anything, just do what I gotta do and let him explore me. Not saying that would work for everyone, but this was a very small snake the day he came home and the way he is so eager to eat...never hissing or striking...at least not yet!

Really great content, keep it up! Growing up i had just about any reptile i wanted, my parents supported my interests. Then college came and i couldn't take my burm all over, i tried but too big or my parents took it but it wasnt their big snake so we gave it to a breeder. Now many years later im getting back in. I couldn't find to link my baby tank for it but i know you have ranking video and my fisrt time id love some imput.

    Sterling is so big!
I got my first snake/ball python around September; he’s now 2 years and 1 month old and weighs 750g (overall a LOT smaller than sterling)
Most people including my breeder are telling me he won’t grow any more; is this true? How old is sterling, and at what age did he stop growing noticeably?
Sorry abt all the questions 😅 your videos helped me so much while I was researching before getting my snake, I enjoy them so much 💛

Your ball python is absolutely gorgeous! Can I ask how you know Sterling is blind? I'm just curious because my new blue eyed leucistic ball python is doing strange behaviors like missing his food strikes and seeming like he might not be able to see possibly. I was just wondering if you found out from a vet or not?

But I can't have retics or Burmese pythons.... Or anacondas.... Or tegus in Alabama. Not even dwarf retics 😒
