I brought mine home Friday as a baby girl at around 6-7pm. I held her and let her watch videos with me and climb around on me while her brand new tank heated up, and she spent the first night through half of Saturday coiled up in her hide out of sight. She spent the next several hours stretching up and looking around a lot, even during handling, so I decided I was willing to risk wasting my only frozen mouse for the weekend. I thawed it, heated it up in hot water until it felt fully warm to the touch. As soon as I dropped it in with the tongs, she got into strike-pose, watched me float it around for a few seconds then struck it. I then laid it on her substrate and she smoothly latched it and coiled it. I waited about 14 minutes in the other room and the mouse was gone, 26 hours after letting her out of her bag in my house for the first time. less than 24 hours later, she's moved away from her basking area for the first time after eating and she's up and stretching out again. She shows no signs of being stressed despite how fast everything has happened so far, but I'm still going to play it safe and wait another 24 hours minimum before reaching into her enclosure as that'll be just over 2 days after swallowing her meal. She looks happy and relaxed, but as you said it's just really not worth the risk, especially in the first week.
So I'm 60 and have kept reptiles from around 5 years old. Health issues I've downsized my farm to 4 cows. Never lost my love of snakes. Had a red tail Boa, a few Burmese and a few balls. Ball pythons my kids adored, my oldest keeps one now. Valentines day my Hubby bought me a juvenile phase normal ball. OMG I all but cried! I'm watching videos to refresh my memory for her care. I've named her Jolene (Who doesn't love Dolly!) I already know she will be another love of my life.
You are the kind of woman I want to be at 60. You're amazing (and so is Dolly lol)
Just bought a 2 month old ball python that loves being handled already and I’m loving it. I also like how you’re videos are you just being real and not just reading a veterinarians tips for the average one when just like you said each reptile has a different personality
I got a 3 month, the experience is real fr fr
Didn’t get so lucky, my almost 1 year old ball python is a little defensive and will strike at sudden or fast movements. So I’m just going to try to be patient and wait.
@@Cleanthefloors you make any headway with your BP’s striking out at you?
Mine is a 4 month and literally seems like she neeeeds to be handled. She loves it 😍
I just got my male ball python, previous owner said that he hadn't eaten in over 4 weeks! I got him home, checked for injuries/parasites, got him in the enclosure, and instantly offered him food. He took it without any hesitation, he must've been very hungry!
Eating on the first day of having him is a good sign right? Hopefully, he isn't under as much stress as other snakes would be.
Just got our first BP today(we have two corn snakes already) and I’m so glad I’ve found your channel!! I’ve been so nervous trying to figure everything out and now I feel so confident that we can provide him a safe and happy home for his life!! He’s spent the first two years of his life in a shop waiting for us and Im not about to disappoint him!😂
thank you for making this video. I needed it, even after 20 years of research, it is refreshing to hear from owners too.
Goodmorning Elle! I hope you have a fantastic Sunday! I just recently got a ball python in march, and your videos have helped so much. He is a fantastic eater and such a good boy.
That's awesome! Congrats. Ball pythons are the sweetest 🥰
As always, love the blooper real. Good info.
Good morning Elle, have an amazing Sunday!! Another informative video that looked like fun trying to make lol!! Looking forward to next week's video!! 🙂
I hope you have an amazing Sunday as well 🥰

Awesome video , great advice
Thank you for your educated video. I just bought small male ball python and I am new to this for sure. 🙂
Thank you! Currently setting up my enclosure for my bby soon, it’s my first snake :)
Congrats! They're so sweet 😅
I just got my normal female ball python Sunflower less than a week ago and I am so glad you put this video out! She is fantastic so far but there are a couple things I’m concerned about, and I’m glad I have this video to help!
Congrats on the ball python! And I'm so glad the video helped ♥️
Thanks for the vid, just got a ball python yesterday. And I also have that same shirt!

Thank you so much! This was very helpful
Glad I could help! 🥰
I'll be getting a ball python, my first snake, after I'm back from vacation. The enclosure is on it's way and I'm looking forward to setting up a bioactive. Love your vids been watching all the BP ones to make sure I'm doing things right. Keep up the awesome vids.
PS - LOVE the shirt. I was just at the Slipknot concert in my city about a month ago. God they are amazing live! 🤘
Oh awesome! Early congrats 🎉
And thank you! I've only been to 1 concert, and it wasn't slipknot 🥲 Great to know they're amazing live! Now I definitely need to go see them
3 months later….i’m getting a snake soon, how’s your snake and the bioactive going?
Love your snakes, they’re beautiful. Also the slipknot shirt is awesome :)
Im getting my first on Tuesday!
HEY ELLE !!! just wanted to say ur vid is amazing AND I LOVE UR SHIRT 🤘🤘🤘
Omg your Slipknot shirt. I love it. And ofc your channel. Always very helpful information ❤
Hello! I don’t have a snake of any kind but I do have a leopard gecko, I love how much information you are able to share!!
Thank you so much! 😊
Just do your research before getting your first reptile. Great video. I have a few and my first one didn't miss a beat. But the next one I got didn't eat for about 6 months. Probably the time of year played a part in that. Then the next one I got took about 3 weeks to get on frozen thawed. She came from an iffy situation but started showing out on eating. And if your baby goes off food for a time it is perfectly natural cause they have their own schedule and it's for us to figure that out
Completely agree! 😊 Research is definitely important, and so is just learning the habits of your specific animal.
Ball Pythons love their Humidity and Both of your Ball Pythons are looking great I can't wait for the next video
Thank you so much! 🥰
@@ellesreptiles you are very welcome
Hi Elle! First of all: Super informative video, thank you so much!! It helped me a lot! :)
However I have a question regarding handling the snake outside. How long is too long and/or too cold for a snake to be outside of their enclosure? I am not sure whether it gets too cold for my snake to be outside. But I saw some clips of you even taking them outside your house (when it is warm). I would only take him with me around my flat but not outside yet. He is used to being handled in general, I have a super responsible breeder, that got him used to being handled super nicely. My ball python is a very relaxed little dude.
Thank you very much in advance! ♥
I love the blooper reels lol
Hiii Elle, I LOVE YOUR VIDEOSSSSS
Thank you so much 🥰
hello Elle! you have helped me so much with my ball python, and i wanted to say thank you!!
ps,,, i love your shirt
I'm so glad I've been able to help! And thank you 🥰
Elle's "Haunted" reptiles. Lol great video. I love your content and your awesome personality.
Haha well thank you! 😊
This video was super reassuring for me, I just got my baby ball python and all he does is hide. I seen him come out for water and roam around a bit then went back in his warm hide
i hope you can do this kind of video for cornsnakes too! Thank you so much for the education you give!
I'll definitely try to get to that in the future! 😊
@@ellesreptiles thank you so much!!
Hi Elle this video is so helpful for me and my mom we are getting a ball python soon and we really need to know some more information on them😄
Dope shirt 🤘🤘
Thank you! 😁
I’ve had my ball python for 7 years but I’m open to new tips
I WATCHED SO MANY OF YOUR VIDEOS BEFORE I GOT MY LEOPARD GECKO LAST WEEK
Hopefully they were helpful ♥️
How do you get tile flooring in your enclosure?
During its first week he was out majority of the time even during the day, always attempting to escape. Its already the second week and it seems that hes calmed down. He hasn't eaten yet so ill be feeding him very soon
planning to get a first python for me and my kids to care for. so after we leave them for a week with no handling and no feeding should we feed them before the first handling? if they are hungry are they more likely to be aggressive?
Hi everyone so I just got a python and I held it before his first fed is that bad?
Good afternoon Allie it is Saturday 2 September 2023 I just saw your video on the first week with your new snake excellent when I got my my female ball python she was in the cage like you suggested the first night and when I looked at her she was 4 feet away from me I was watching UA-cam and I looked at her in her cage and she struck at me three times in a row like a cobra it sent a chill up my spine and I actually felt angry for a couple seconds then I looked at the video how to manage an aggressive young snake I applied the techniques and she never struck again after a 10 minute assignment and she never was in her cage again I’ve had her for almost a year until bedtime she’s either under my hat with me in my lunchbox at work wrapped around my neck during the day and I’m going to send you a picture of her with my dog they are in love each other and my dog protects her and it’s great you’re gonna love it and she’s just got into kissing because she’s around my neck when I kiss my dogs and she understands what a kiss is and she knows what she’s doing it’s so cute I love it I love you Ellie and your show is great and informative Christ is my king I hope he’s yours Braxton out I’ll send you the pics or the video
i know you probably wont see this but i got a new baby ball python it was hungry striking at the pet store worker because they don't handle it they just give it food they say they feed them tomorrow so should i feed it tomorrow since its hungry or will it be fine if i still wait a week since that's what your suppose to do since its in new enclosure
How much would you think it costs to feed a full grown python monthly? And baby ones to?
Just got a 4 month old ball and she’s been balled up in a corner. I know that’s probably normal but just asking if it is for reassurance
nice shirt!
Thank you 😊
they don't need lights but do they need like a heat lamp and a moist hiding place to shed ?
I have already unknowingly handled her the first week a lot and she didn’t eat what should I do
I need some advice, This is my first snake, hes a ball python born last year, and hes not eaten yet, have tried recommended sized mice and smaller as well as, in hot water, even microwave in hot water, wet and dry, holding with tweezers above cage, leaving it in over night. any ideas???
I kind of tickle my balk python to get then to move more when its out i think its funny don't know if it likes it or not
Fed mine the day after I bought him he ate with no problem
My python is aways hiddening for 3 weeks is that alright ?
Girrrrllllllllll your place is haunted lol but I'm getting my Fire Clown soon, trying to make sure it's super comfortable. I have a heat light and I'm gonna be getting a heat pad. Do I need the heat light at night? Or is the heat pad under its hid gonna be enough? I'm also curious about the winter time. My house was built in 1940 so the insulation sucks so im guessing I'd be using a heat light in the next few months correct? Just want to make sure she's always gonna be comfortable
Heat mats aren’t necessary. I recommend using a halogen flood bulb connected to a dimmer or dimming thermostat during the day, and a deep heat projector or ceramic heat emitter at night.
My tank is foggy, what should I adjust?
Hey! We pick up a ball python in 2 weeks so we’re getting our tank ready now.. how do you recommend taking the snake in a car? We’re only 20 mins away from the breeder
Usually they'll give you a snake sack or plastic container to bring the snake home in. If not, a food storage container or small sterilite bin (depending on the size of the ball python) will work perfectly 😊
Um my home two hours ago and it’s letting me handle it perfectly fine and is letting me touch his head
No geckos Connie and mike? Was hoping to see the new cal room and some geckos!
I would love to get a ball python, but I have enough to handle with my lizards! Thanks for the information! Hope you have a great week ❤️
I don’t just want that shirt, I need that shirt.
I am a new Bob python owner. Her name is Medusa. I’ve had her for about three weeks now and she just started to have the blue eye
Is Your python an orange dream morph? I have one too, lovely female, around 2 years old. Ball pythons are so sweet. Curious, intelligent and stubborn as hell XD
Ik this sounds stupid but should i be worried if my new snake i just got issnt showing anay sighns of stress. No balling, nothing.Hes exploring his enclosure and everything.so yeah....
Nope! Some are just more outgoing than others 😊
Hi Elle! On the topic of feeding my ball python, how long can rodents or mice stay in the freezer before they go bad? thanks for the videos, they help a bunch!
In a regular freezer, about 6ish months. If they're sealed in a freezer bag in a deep freeze, about a year. 😊
@@ellesreptiles Noted. Thank you!
One thing that people make a mistake is feeding them in there living place you want to take them out and feed
Just brought home a 4 month old ball Python, I named Basil. Pet smart employees were extremely weird today and odd. Didn’t tell me what the gender was or anything. Just weird.
Why do they wobble there heads?
Ball pythons with the spider gene have a wobble because they’ve got an inner ear deformity. It’s not ethical to breed them or support the breeding of them.
We just brought home a new girl. She was given to us because she hasn't been eating for the girl for about 4 months now. She is the second BP we have, and third snake. We have a BP and a Corn Snake. I'm a little nervous, but I think it will go well. 🥰
how did it go?
@@bruggmanbrandon5272 Perfect! She hasn't missed a meal since she got here, and zero other issues!! 😊
@@ellens.bookishcollection do you feed live or thawed? Any help is much appreciated!
What if they pooped the first night? I know it needs to come out but I don't want to disturb her.
You can definitely clean that up! 😊
@@ellesreptiles thank you.
ANY TIPS AND TRICK ANYONE ? 👀
Quarantine.. what if you literally have no other pet no dog no cat no goldfish? Just you and the snake
If you don't have anything else, then it should be fine! It could be helpful to keep them on some sort of clean substrate (like paper towels) for a little while if you need to collect a fecal sample for a first vet appointment if you want to though
And if you happen to have a business phone or a non-personal number I would like to send you the pictures of my dog with a snake in the videos of him sleeping with her and her all wrapped around his leg and it’s so cute and he sits right over her like a mother hen and of course if anyone tries to touch that snake when the Australian Shepherd is watching over her you might as well go play with piranhas are an alligator or something he will protect her the end so funny and cute OK and if you have an email I can send it to that Christ is King have a great day awesome videos keep them coming
Um my ball python ate the third day
Just got a rescue ball python I think I need help with this guy is there anyway I can email you guys
