Thanks for this amazing video! I started a sole trader business without an accountant but it was definitely challenging and I'm still figuring out the bookkeeping 😅One thing I also found really helpful are the free online seminars offered by Skatteverket (the Swedish tax agency) in English on how to start a business and how to do your accounting if anyone hasn't found those yet :)
Great tip, thank you! I'd be so lazy to try to translate everything. Even in the UK I needed an accountant. But so much respect to people who just do it!
I will have another go and try to hit the right button this time! About starting your company, theer is acually an easier way to do this. You can buy an "of-the-shelf-company" that is already registred but has not actually has started to do business. These are available from multiple sources, ie "Svenska standardbolag", "Fortnox" just to name two. The cost is around 6 000 SEK, and one firm promises that you can be up and running in 2 hours. Of course you still need to provide the capital for the limeted company ("Gmbh"), in most cases 25 000 SEK, but since the cost of buying and registring the new ownership of the company is carried by the company that is in fact the total amount you will need. You chose "the hard way" - which isn´t necesserily wrong. In fact when I started companies I usually did it the way you did. It gives you better controll and also a better feel for the various parts that are involved in the process. It just takes a little more time! Good luck!
Parts of the process of forming the company can be sped up by buying a 'pre-formed' company, from a company specialized in this, and then change things like name, address, business/activity description, board members etc. Same if one wants to close down a company, there are quite a few steps and formalities that can be made somebody else's (again specialized company) problem by selling your company to them, and then them dissolving it.
Yes, that's definitely also a direction you can go. I looked into it a little bit before but then decided to start a new business. But also a good reminder if one wants to close a company. Thanks for sharing!

Hello, I am thinking about starting my little business too. I will be an e-commerce website. I have looked at everything that you mentioned, so thank you for this video it was really helpful. I am thinking about a Sole trader status because I will be working in this by myself. The only thing that I don't get is how to declare how much money I spent on buying the products, packaging, marketing ... Does the taxe agency look into that in order to define how much taxes we will pay ? What should I do in order to declare every single charge that this business cost me ? Thanks 🙌
Thanks for watching! :) I would definitely declare all your expenses because it means your profit will shrink and therefore the tax you have to pay. You can also start an Aktiebolag (limited company) as an individual, by the way. I'm also the only person working in my business and I have an AB. But in general I would recommend an accountant who either does the job for you or at least walks you through what to submit to the tax agency. I have an accountant and I wouldn't be able to it by myself, especially because everything is in Swedish. Accountancy costs are also expenses so this will reduce your taxes again.
That’s a great question! Unfortunately, setting up a business as a non-EU citizen is beyond my expertise. However, I recommend reaching out to Migrationsverket (the Swedish Migration Agency) for information about residency requirements and Bolagsverket (the Swedish Companies Registration Office) for details on registering a business. They should be able to guide you through the process!
The "verklig huvudman" thing is fairly new. And you are still the owner even if you don't register it, but may be fined if you do not register it. It is to avoid people being able to hide who the true owner is (like for example using multiple holding companies), but it seem to me a bit clumsy that they wrote the law to include all companies.
Hi, thank you for all the information but if I may ask, did you need to have commercial address when you registered your business? Im planning to set up but im stock looking for office rentals :(
Hi! thank you! You have really good information! thank you for sharing. One question, if I do it as a sole trader can I give invoice and hace company clients as well? or do I need to have a aktiebolag? I am thinking to start with the soletrader first and see how the business goes and then maybe change to an AB, is it possible?
Hi there, thank you so much for this video. This is very helpful. I had a quick question ,could you please share which Swedish bank you used for the business account. Sounds like you found a very helpful bank :). I just moved from the US and am in the same boat to work remotely for a foreign co. Appreciate your help, thank you!!
Thanks for sharing your experience. I have some questions regarding opening a business in Sweden. Must this second person (deputy/partner) reside in Sweden? A brief background: I used to run a software company back home in Nigeria with a friend from college before we dissolved the business as I pursued a career in the academia. But I will still love to run a software company on the side while living and working in a Swedish university. I would like to partner with my old friend who still resides in Nigeria and has a great job that he wouldn't move for anything. Is it possible to have him as a partner even when he doesn't reside in Sweden? On accounting part, my immediate younger sister is an accountant in a big firm in Berlin. Can I list her as the company's accountant? Must the salaries of these people be defined while registering this company? Also, since I might plan to diversify from software to may be hardware production in the future, can the company's description be revised after registration?
I can recommend you a few links to check out www.reddit.com/r/TillSverige/comments/v4l7qt/start_an_aktiebolag_questions/ and www.fortnox.se/lagerbolag. I do think you need someone with a Swedish personnummer to join your company but I'm not 100% sure. If your accountant can do your taxes in Swedish you can probably choose anyone. No salaries need to be defined unless you make them your employees? And last but not least, I think you change your description of the company, yes.
Hi sis what a great info! Does your accountant speak good English? Would you be able to let me know who he is? Also thinking of starting a business here in Sweden and seems like i need an accountant to start with :)
Hi. I am from Sri Lanka & I am planning to come Sweden august for my master degree. I am thinking about to start small business in Sweden. Is it possible to register business in Sweden for student? & what are the documents need ? & costs for the business registration
Hi there! I think as long as you have a personnummer and an initial investment of 25000 SEK there shouldn't be a problem to start a business in Sweden. I can also recommend to you Frilans Finans or Cool Company. You have a business through them and they take a small fee like an accountancy company.
@@LivingSwedish hi dear... I'm planning to move to Sweden for my masters. But i wish to set up my own company...would you dont mind could i have some advice❣️
thanks a lot for a great info, i actually have a question when you put the 25k in a privet acc then you are allowed to use them to buy things to your company or how it goes with the money?
I had to ask a friend who is Swedish and owns a company herself. You can use half of the money for assets like a computer for example. However, the recommendation is to keep all the money in the bank. When you close down the AB you can withdraw all the money though.
Very informative video! appreciate your efforts. After setting up, is there any time line to show progress? I mean invoices and tax you paid on invoices, and filling a tax return.
Yes, there are deadlines to submit expenses, VAT etc. I have an accountant for that which I highly recommend having, especially if you don't understand Swedish. He will be able to help you submitting documents and meeting deadlines.
You don't have to show progress after registering your company. You can literally have it for years and show zero profit or even losses each year, you will still own the company until you decide to start earning profits or decide to sell or declare bankrupcy
