This was absolutely heartbreaking I had to stop this almost at the beginning, because it was making me cry. I'm a West Side Story fanatic and I've heard this song many times and I tearing up at the raw emotion conveyed. 10 out of 10.
AHHHHH THE LITTLE SOLEA WITH A BIG AMAZING VOICE AND THE AMAZING KAREN WITH ANOTHER BIG AMAZING VOICE! They are some of my favorite broadway stars (Along with Phillipa Soo) and lucky little adorable Solea got her Broadway debut with such a legend, Karen Olivo. They are amazing together. Perfect
Both singers, singing gorgeously. Yes, Ms. mediorio (writer below), I agree that Ms. Olivo and Ms. Pfeiffer both knock it out of the park and both of their vocal transitions, from head to chest and vice versa, are outstanding. What I loved about the Tempi the conductor took, is that you could hear EVERY word and every gorgeous phrase, vocal tone, and orchestration. I Love when a conductor gets the tempi right and refuses to rush, because it allows the beauty of the singer's voices and their vibratos to come through. Yes, at times Ms. Pfeiffer gets a bit lost and got behind at one point, then ahead, but it all worked out in the end. However, she totally maintained her composure when she knew she was out of snyc, and also maintained really beautiful vocal production and never let it get in the way of her performance. Kudos to her. Yes, probably one of the MOST difficult pieces to sing for two females in just about the entire stage repertoire.
i love karen but solea??? her seamless transition from belt to head voice????? why isn't anyone talking about that????????? she's so much better than josefina scaglione bye
Solea Pfeiffer is only 21 years-old here, and she received fantastic reviews, as did the rest of the cast, but believe it or not, this is Solea's professional debut as an actress. She was discovered while she was in college. Solea studied and trained as an actress at the University of Michigan (BFA musical theatre) and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London. She's an outstanding singer as well as actress, landing leading roles at Univ. of Mich and the Royal Academy of Drama as a student. Karen Olivo is 40 years-old here, and as we all know, Karen won the Tony for best featured actress in West Side Story in this role as Anita previously. The acting as well as the singing in this production was phenomenal.
Karen sings in a lower key than Solea in the duet. Solea seamlessly reached a higher register. It was so delicate and much more difficult than Karen's part. Karen should have restrained her lower register part a bit more.
This singing is gorgeous, and dear god Ms. Pfeiffer's transition from belt into head is insanely good, but Gustavo Dudamel at the conductor stand was waaaaaay too indulgent on this tempo. Bernstein himself liked to slow down his tempi, especially later in life, so you could argue that Dudamel was doing what Bernstein wanted, but the composer does not always make for the best conductor of his or her work! The one benefit: that slow tempo gave these talented actresses an awful lot of time to find their moments. :)
Solea wins hands down against Natalie Wood, because Wood didn't do the singing for Maria. Solea sings on a higher key than Karen Olivo in this duet, which is more difficult. Solea hits all of the high notes very delicately without any strain whatsoever.
Josefina had more originality. For a character like Maria, you need someone who's unknown and foreign to American audiences. Her character has only been in America for several weeks. Even her Spanish was down to the Puerto Rican dialect. That's the way her character is supposed to be portrayed. If there's a movie remake, it should be based on the 2009 revival. I love how Karen Olivo brought the modern New York attitude in Anita. Rita Moreno set the standard, but Karen Olivo is pretty close.
I admire both performers for their beautiful voices, and wonderful passionate acting, HOWEVER - I have a love, i feel has become to self-indulgent, and too slow...the piece was written how it was intended to be sung, too much dragging around by the performers, which feels like you are forcing an audience to have certain emotion, just sing the song from the heart, and it is so well written, the rest will happen!
Don't blame Solea and Karen for the pace of the duet. Blame the conductor of the LA Philharmonic Orchestra. It seems as if Solea & Karen were hindered as well by the slow tempo at the end.
Yes, tempo is slow in "I Have a Love" , but these 2 divas turned in such a moving, beautiful performance that they put tears in my eyes. I was moved to tears, not only by the sadness of their dilemma but by the beauty of the performance as well. Both divas performed this duet beautifully.
For myself mainly ANITA A boy like that who'd kill your brother, Forget that boy and find another, One of your own kind. Stick to your own kind! A boy like that will give you sorrow. You'll meet another boy tomorrow, One of your own kind. Stick to your own kind! A boy who kills cannot love, A boy who kills has no heart. And he's the boy who gets your love And gets your heart! Very smart, Maria, very smart! A boy like that wants one thing only, And when he's done, he'll leave you lonely. He'll murder your love; he murdered mine. Just wait and see, Just wait, Maria, Just wait and see! MARIA Oh, no, Anita, no, Anita, no! It isn't true, not for me, It's true for you, not for me. I hear your words, And in my head I know they're smart, But my heart, Anita, But my heart Knows they're wrong And my heart Is too strong, For I belong To him alone, to him alone. One thing I know: I am his, I don't care what he is. I don't know why it's so, I don't want to know! Oh no, Anita, no, you should know better! You were in love, or so you said. You should know better . . . I have a love, and it's all that I have. Right or wrong, what else can I do? I love him, I'm his, And everything he is I am, too. I have a love, and it's all that I need, Right or wrong, and he needs me, too. I love him, we're one. There's nothing to be done, Not a thing I can do But hold him, hold him forever, Be with him now, tomorrow And all of my life! BOTH When love comes so strong, There is no right or wrong, Your love is your life.
karen olivo as anita is the best casting choice ever omggggg
I mean she won a Tony for it
agreed
now solea is paying eliza hamilton in the national tour and karen is playing angelica schuyler...Great
This was absolutely heartbreaking I had to stop this almost at the beginning, because it was making me cry. I'm a West Side Story fanatic and I've heard this song many times and I tearing up at the raw emotion conveyed. 10 out of 10.
SOLEA IS PERFECT I HAD NO IDEA THIS EXISTED
When Angelica and Eliza argues that Alexander had an affair
AHHHHH THE LITTLE SOLEA WITH A BIG AMAZING VOICE AND THE AMAZING KAREN WITH ANOTHER BIG AMAZING VOICE!

esotericposterior i prefer to hear it in a more classic way
what are you even on about my dude
Listen to Julie Andrews sing this and then you will see who is better. lol with those transitions...her transitions are cracking and flat.
I love them at but Josephine is pure classic ! They are all good
They’re not smooth at all though. They’re super clunky and obvious.
Angelica and Eliza
plaidcarogemm the truth^

…and [REDACTED].
Anita was going off Yesss work Anita!
Karen sings in a lower key than Solea in the duet. Solea seamlessly reached a higher register. It was so delicate and much more difficult than Karen's part. Karen should have restrained her lower register part a bit more.
This performance works better at 1.25x speed.
omg thank you for the tip, it's so much better
right?!?! i’m so confused as to why it’s So damn slow!
This should be at the top bc this tempo is entirely too slow for what is supposed to be a heated confrontation.
I agree that the tempo's too slow, but the higher speed hardly flatters Solea's vibrato.
ikr why is it so fucking slow
This singing is gorgeous, and dear god Ms. Pfeiffer's transition from belt into head is insanely good, but Gustavo Dudamel at the conductor stand was waaaaaay too indulgent on this tempo. This was excellent...tks for the upload
Did anyone else hear the audience member sobbing at 3.40 how sad is that
Olivo as Anita is perfection. You just believe that Bernardo just died.
Karen Olivo gives Rita Moreno a run for her money.
Solea wins hands down against Natalie Wood, because Wood didn't do the singing for Maria. Solea sings on a higher key than Karen Olivo in this duet, which is more difficult. Solea hits all of the high notes very delicately without any strain whatsoever.
Natalie Wood was crap as Maria. I actually like Josefina Scaglione was Maria.
David C really? I liked Natalie Wood as Maria? but Josefina is amazing too!
Josefina had more originality. For a character like Maria, you need someone who's unknown and foreign to American audiences. Her character has only been in America for several weeks. Keren sang live , and Rita's voice in the film was dubt.
Karen owns my heart. I have a belt but I wish it was like hers :(
Solea’s vocal range is insane, she can hit Maria’s high notes AND sing in Eurydice’s lower range?
Anybody else feel like the tempo was funeral procession-ish?
Raya T. Way to slow...saps a lot of the energy
Agreed! Adjust the speed to 1.25x. It's a lot better :)

THIS IS THE BEST DUO EVER
Once again the genius of Bernstein and Sondheim on full display
I want to hear a Spanish version of the song live.
Azwrath Frost on Spotify there is Un Hombre asi
I got so many chills
Ella Renee same
I'm snatched.
This Anita is stunning
Stellar and EPIC !!
Some of the arm/hand movements feel really awkward to me 😂 but the singing is very good
Great singing but this tempo is like a funeral procession. Jesus.
what event was this? A concert performance of West Side Story?
Yes, at the Hollywood Bowl.
For myself mainly
ANITA
A boy like that who'd kill your brother,
Forget that boy and find another,
One of your own kind.
Stick to your own kind!
A boy like that will give you sorrow.
You'll meet another boy tomorrow,
One of your own kind.
Stick to your own kind!
A boy who kills cannot love,
A boy who kills has no heart.

And gets your heart!
Very smart, Maria, very smart!

And when he's done, he'll leave you lonely.
He'll murder your love; he murdered mine.
Just wait and see,
Just wait, Maria,
Just wait and see!
MARIA
Oh, no, Anita, no,
Anita, no!
It isn't true, not for me,
It's true for you, not for me.
I hear your words,
And in my head
I know they're smart,
But my heart, Anita,
But my heart
Knows they're wrong
And my heart
Is too strong,
For I belong
To him alone, to him alone.
One thing I know:
I am his,
I don't care what he is.
I don't know why it's so,
I don't want to know!
Oh no, Anita, no, you should know better!
You were in love, or so you said.
You should know better . . .
I have a love, and it's all that I have.
Right or wrong, what else can I do?
I love him, I'm his,
And everything he is
I am, too.
I have a love, and it's all that I need,
Right or wrong, and he needs me, too.
I love him, we're one.
There's nothing to be done,
Not a thing I can do
But hold him, hold him forever,
Be with him now, tomorrow
And all of my life!
BOTH
When love comes so strong,
There is no right or wrong,
Your love is your life.
Beautiful voices, way too slow.
why so slow though??
Oh my goodness, ladies. Pick it up, please.
(I know it’s not their fault but I woulda said something…)
The tempo is sooooo slow! Where the urgency!?
Carol Lawrence still best Maria. Oliva sings Anita music better than anyone I’ve heard do the role.
why is the tempo so damn slow
Beautiful , but I prefer the Lin-Manuel version.
He translated it and sang it with Raul Esparza (they both played Charley in Merrily We Roll Along)
Oversung by Solea. It's a legit role. Keep it legit. The belt is abrasive for the phrasing. And the tempo...is a mess.
over-indulgent and undersung.
