Loved this movie so much. I particularly loved that scene where Bernardo tells Chino how bossy Maria is. It’s funny because I’m a Latina and it’s almost common knowledge here how girls named Maria around here tend to be bossy, like, my mom is Silvia Maria, and my nieces are Maria Clara and Manuella Maria, they’re ALL really bossy indeed. Maria also does mean rebellious, so it make some sense.
LOVE LOVE LOVED IT! Beautiful film, amazing cast and a wonderful production of the story. Thank you to everyone involved in the making of this film. One of my favourite musicals. Massive well done. xx
Looking forward to this. Excited about introducing West Side Story to a new generation - including my “young adult” kids. The 1961 version was great. This looks even better.
The original West Side Story will always be a classic, but this version was better IMO. It improved upon a lot of the shortcomings of the 1961 film, while still staying authentic to the story. Go see it - you won't be disappointed.
It’s almost as good as the original but not quite … still loved seeing this remake. For me there were a few things missing and some fab elements added which brought more to the story. Love both and both have merit
Literally, if I hadn't seen people online today complaining about how there are no subtitles for the Spanish dialogue, I wouldn't have even known this movie had come out. How did Disney manage to keep the fact that Steven Spielberg was remaking West Side Story completely secret for a year - even after it started showing in theatres?
Are you kidding? This movie has been hyped up, down, and sideways. There have been features and cast interviews for weeks, if not months, and the reviews started hitting a couple of weeks ago, including in the biggest publications.
This movie has been promoted hardcore for the last 6 months. Even before that, it was on the press for the last 4 years, and the dance community knew very well that there were auditions for it.
How exciting to hear the legendary New York Philharmonic orchestra on the soundtrack with the dynamic conductor Dudamel the perfect choice to master the dynamic virtuoso writing of Bernstein who was the legendary principal conductor of the New York Philharmonic decades ago....He would be very proud of this much improved rendition of his masterpiece.....( As a timpani and percussion player I was thrilled to notice how the percussion section was enlarged on the recording sessions together with a much larger orchestra) ...He was not happy with the rather underwhelming music production of the the original movie soundtrack......I feel privileged to have attended a concert at London's Royal Albert Hall back in 1962 With Bernstein conducting the New York Philharmonic in one of his famous ' Lecture concerts for young people ' ....." What is a melody " was the theme...., Mozart , Brahms and ending with a special exciting orchestration of his " Symphonic Dances from West Side Story " !! 👏👏👏😊👍💜
ABSOLUTELY!! Ansel Elgort as Tony was PHENOMENAL in this Movie and agreed, Tony is SUCH a hard Character to get right! Usually seen as bland and boring......Ansel was ANYTHING BUT!!

Think the issue with Spielberg’s last picture was that it lacked passion. Ready Player One is very impressive for him and I’m glad he got to do a blockbuster action flick like that, but Steven wasn’t attached to the story much like he was with West Side Story. For this film, he’s so passionate when it comes to adapting the Broadway production.

I think Gustavo Dudamel is the perfect conductor for this adventure.I like the voices and it seems different but faithful to the spirit of Bernstein, that i am not able to understand because i am not American wrote a lady on line.Quite a pity🌞💯🎶💥🙄
I heard the movie bombed. Financially, maybe. But from what I've seen (I have yet to see it) and heard (I have the brilliant soundtrack), did it really BOMB? From the comments, I see nothing but praise. Ok, it's up against Spiderman. Hey parents, do something other than expose your kids to comics. Show them some real art. Before I get pulled apart, comics are great. I love Batman. But the only way the classics will be kept alive, is if the next generation gets to see them.
Was not aware that they made Rita Moreno a producer, but considering ALL the advice she offered from her experience(s) during the filming of the first version, it doesn't surprise me...
Just finished watching this. -- As expected, an absolutely wonderful film! Just a few comments, however: 1. I had rather been hoping Stephen Spielberg might take the opportunity to update the story to current times. Mildly disappointed that did not happen. 2. One of the songs ("I Feel Pretty") has been transposed to a later point in the play, where it feels out of place to me- after the violence of the big fight scene. Not a major complaint, but still... a bit jarring. 3. I have felt and continue to feel that Anita should be present in the final scene. I totally get why she does what she does, but I still think she ought to be there to face the outcome, and hear Maria's speech. 4. And speaking of whom-- I low-key love that they created (well, adapted and modified) a role for Rita Morena in this one. **EDITED to add--** _5. That moment when you belatedly realize that Anita is "The Bullet" from 'Hamilton'... !!!_
I totally agree except for point 1. I enjoyed so deeply they stayed true to the original story! I am so fed up of recent remakes where everything needs to be change to "current values". So it all become the same thing, with the same message (see all Disney classic remakes). Sometimes you just want to see a classic you have always loved with some tinie tiny updates and be enchanted with how much everyone can still relate and enjoy.
@@Ann-lc1dp Yeah, there's definitely a LOT to be said for sticking with the original. It was just that... given the events and turmoil of the past few years lately... I just thought it might be powerfully relevant to see this story set in the present (well-- pre-Covid).

I liked the placement of “I Feel Pretty” right after the rumble. I think they did that to make it feel very jarring on purpose. I thought it was very effective. And I loved Valentina’s character, and I loved her singing “Somewhere” rather than Tony and Maria. It made much more sense to me, showing her lamenting the tragedy as an observer, rather than focusing on the Tony/Maria love scene.
@@gracejones7352 Yeah, I really liked that they stayed true to the original story. The changes they made were subtle, but they truly made the movie much better. I think they did look at that element through a modern lens and made it much better and more realistic. I love the 1961 film since I was a child. Now I've just seen the 2021 in Madrid-Spain...i have enjoyed it so much...Thank You so much Mr Spierlberg for make me believe again in the magic of cinema
For many many years when people have asked me to name my number 1 all time film I have replied The Godfather. Tonight I saw this production of WSS. It has toppled cost nostra. I've watched the stage show in England, Paris, Cologne. A very special film, congratulations to everyone who had a hand in making this film.
What Spielberg gets out of this story is very different from what I get out of this story, and I think the fact that I came out of his movie so fulfilled and happy with the adaptation shows how skilled it a director he is. He told the story as it has always meant to be instead of his interpretation of the story.
Love Spielberg. He’s so skilled.
Sometimes remakes are terrible but this was superb love rita shes a legend ❤️
I loved this movie, its the kind of thing you watch over and over again
seriously my new favorite movie. ever. it was so incredible.
It was mine to!
Saw it for the 3rd time today. Could see it 33 more times in theater and know I'd still weep at the end. Every part well cast, but I'm waiting for the Elgort hate mongers to get real and give the guy his due! His Tony is the best ever, and I am certain we can expect to see him become a big screen super favorite in the years ahead!
I saw this movie 4 times in the theater that's how much I loved it and I really loved the original, but this reimagination was amazing. I can't wait till it's streaming so I can watch it anytime. Ansel & Rachel had great chemistry and the whole cast was terrific! Thank you Steven Spielberg for doing an incredible job!
I’m so in awe this did justice and more to the original I was in tears the whole movie just every nuance of the original was there but with that something special too❤️ Bravo 👏🏼 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 Spielberg and cast
It thought West Side Story was was a Masterpiece! The Acting, Singing, and Choreography are Oscar Worthy Nods! You can compare the two different versions because I believe they serve two different sets of generations and of styles. I hope this updated version will bring in our younger generation to see the fabulous Musicals of Hollywood! Hollywood it is not all about Superhero’s and Gloom/Doom!!
This movie is sheer perfection.
I was very skeptical before I started watching the new WSS,, BUT it WOWED me and at the same time broke my heart…I’ll be watching this over & over again!!!!❤️❤️❤️❤️
How refreshing it is to have a remake that is actually a good as if not better than the original! I can’t wait till it is touring the west end again now to see it live for the first time!!
Riff was my favorite character in this whole movie he was the best looking to!
An absolute masterpiece! Blown away!
I love the movie and the singers, the interpretation in it, Rita Moreno singing somewhere sometime. Can’t wait to buy this version.
This is the highlight of so many films in the past decade. Go see it. It will move you to the depths of your soul.
I've seen 7 decades of great films in my lifetime, and this one is the ONLY one I've seen on big screen more than twice and wish I could see 10 times over on big screen. Streaming will have to do in the future, I guess! Truly magnificent cast and performances, cinematography, choreography, EVERYTHING!! Highly Oscar worthy.
It means 'bittersweet', but yeah, I'm a rebellious one too. 😝
@@maryvallettakeith6146 see? Point proved 🤣🤣
Puerto Rican from NYC and I never knew that. Thanks for the info and comment. I enjoyed reading it. It made me smile.
Went to see this today! Sad film but a great remake, loved it so much especially Ansel 😍😍
Just saw the movie...it needs every award that's out there!!!
This film/remake is great, a masterpiece.
Veey intensive, wonderful actors, dancers and singers!!
This movie will get more mad more popular as time goes on
I hope so. It’s a freaking masterpiece
LOVE LOVE LOVED IT! Beautiful film, amazing cast and a wonderful production of the story. Thank you to everyone involved in the making of this film. One of my favourite musicals. Massive well done. xx
Thanks for the Making off! Superb production, film, amazing songs, voices! 👏👏👏
Steven Spielberg a legend
Damn right!
Meh
I LOVED this movie soooo much!
Stunning stunning stunning remake
ほんとに素晴らしい映画でした!
I have no regret watching this amazing movie, love the actors, the dance, the story..such a perfect work😘
Looking forward to this.
Love both and both have merit
i think it was better than the original, and i love the original version!
@@12harrypotterfan34 I so agree! I was surprised how great this movie was.
This was one of Spielberg’s Magnum Opus. I add this with Indiana Jones and Schilinder’s List
Love... love... love this movie, could watch again and again, I don't think there's a bad performance in it - Speilberg did it good
Spielberg's best film since Munich. Masterpiece
it’s true that no one could ever beat the talented Natalie Wood but seriously Racheal is beyond perfect for Maria. Loved this remake.
With respect to Ms. Wood, she wasn’t Latina & didn’t do her own singing
@@joewhitehead3 a fact that still blows my mind till this day
absolutely beautiful production...congradulations Steven Spielberg....always loved your movies....happy new year...
I love this movie and I cry of course and sang all the songs
That's the absolute cinema in every respect.
Are you being facetious? If not, do you live under a rock? 😂
This movie is Oscar worthy
Definitely. I hope history will repeat itself.
Thank you, Steven Spielberg for remaking West Side Story.
Ansel is always a sweetheart and fire
Message to all mothers and fathers….Send your sons to dance lessons. Men who dance make women (and men) swoon!❤️❤️
Allelujah!
This movie was so good
Did you not see Hamilton Spielberg? Arianna's talent and charisma was all over the stage as The Bullet.
Ariana DeBose stole the entire show! what a talent!!
I thought she was obnoxious
@@marymalang4923 okay. well I thought she was radiant and deserves an academy award for her performance!
@@mallaidhdevlin4512 You were right!
@@spinsandneedles i knoooowww!! congratulations to academy award winner ariana debose she honestly deserves it 💕
I LOVED this version's rendition of officer krupke
Tony was great. Hardest role
ABSOLUTELY!!
Ansel Elgort as Tony was PHENOMENAL in this Movie and agreed, Tony is SUCH a hard Character to get right!
Usually seen as bland and boring......Ansel was ANYTHING BUT!!
Wow! I'm off to see this movie this week!
I love your version of West Side Story. I bought the movie and had seen it too. I don’t on how many time have watch it. I have seen the original movie too. I also got that movie but I enjoy your movie. The young man that play Tony does remind me of Lliam Neeson. Thank you Mr. Spielberg for remaking the movie.
I haven't seen it yet, but trailer gave me goosebumps!!
Chills, Chills, and more chills. A movie like this, rich with acting, dancing, singing, and a strong moral social message should come out twice a year. This movie is tops! If Hollywood is capable of this, why don't they make every movie a high bar?
Every time Ansel sings I cry 😭 amazing 🤩
I know! He’s voice was beautiful in this movie. He also looked amazing🤩 If I ever run into him if he’s in L.A. I would go crazy 😂
RIGHT?!
Ansel Elgort is GORGEOUS in EVERY way, as Tony......and otherwise!!
This was an Oscar worthy film.
How could this version top the 1961 original…well…it does. See it on the big screen.
With all these good reviews why is it struggling at the box office
@@donnalombardo1135 I suspect that some people are still scared to go into theaters. Plus the theater where I saw it was surprisingly small-only five rows of seats, with six to eight seats in each, and a screen that wasn’t particularly large. If I had known, I would have made more of an effort to find an IMAX theater showing it. If other theaters are showing it on smaller screens as well, it’s practically not worth venturing out, especially when there’s a new COVID variant out there. I loved the movie, but wish it was streaming as well as showing in theaters.
@@denisesudell2538 shopping malls are full and other places I don't think its that it might have something to with elgort and how people feel about him
It’s failing at the box office because there are no subtitles.
@@denisesudell2538 Stop with the Covid scariants. Do your homework. It's propaganda to sell more vaccines. Fucking just STOP or this will go on forever.
Riff, Anitta and Bernardo made this for me, such talented people, I couldn't keep my eyes off them!! & I have a feeling Rachel's going to be a star, a voice like that at such a young age is incredible, more roles and she'll go down in history, I see a long career ahead of her :)
That new Tony is a young Marlon Brando.
Finally! Someone else said/saw it! That was exactly what I thought. Ansel is a very capable singer, actor, and dancer...but that smolder of his is what makes his Tony a GREAT Tony.
@@jeannelucas3132 There was something unstable about the new Tony. Unlike the original Tony who was such a sweet character.
@@Nestor123057 But that's part of what I like...he's a microcosm of the whole situation: the current racial tension, the coming displacement of both groups, the unease of the formerly incarcerated...all of it.
That’s how Spielberg described home, too! Ansel did a great job. He’s so likeable too. Just check out his UA-cam videos and interviews 😂
@@ceced1417 oh I didn't know Spielberg said that. Well, nice to know.
This movie was amazing
Think the issue with Spielberg’s last picture was that it lacked passion. Ready Player One is very impressive for him and I’m glad he got to do a blockbuster action flick like that, but Steven wasn’t attached to the story much like he was with West Side Story. For this film, he’s so passionate when it comes to adapting the Broadway production.
How did it lack passion?
ce film est magnifique ,Spielberg est un geni
truly the best movie i’ve seen in years. only critiques i have is ansels performance wasnt up to par compared to everyone else and he clearly didn’t try as hard. also i wasnt a fan of the way they changed cool but i’m biased because that was my favorite scene from the 1961 version lol
I cannot agree.
@@McElhinney65 agree that it was good or agree on the parts i didn’t like? i like hearing other peoples opinions
I’m not the person who originally responded, but I thought the reimagining of Cool was brilliant. It highlighted what a darker, more violent production of WSS this is. (And I’m also a fan of the original film.)
I agree, I loved the original "cool" and the timing of that song in the original was important. But this film was just so fantastic!
@@Jasmine-uj5ns I thought that Ansel was excellent. There were no weak performances in my opinion.
The Spielberg version is much darker but still beautiful
imagine if ryan steele & mike faist both auditoned. mike would be like so excited that he got the role over ryan because of how his body moves
Holy cow the Filming on the balcony blew me away
Saw this movie yesterday with my girlfriends! Loved it!
Mike Faist's chest carried the first half of the movie.
Just finished watching this.
-- As expected, an absolutely wonderful film! Just a few comments, however:
**EDITED to add--**

Yeah, there's definitely a LOT to be said for sticking with the original.
It was just that... given the events and turmoil of the past few years lately... I just thought it might be powerfully relevant to see this story set in the present (well-- pre-Covid).
completely disagree with updating it to current times. it’s tacky and contrived. and i would counter that he actually did do that, with an excellent script that breathed new life into the racial divide. they just don’t throw it in your face, you have to read between the lines to see where they reference present day america.
I quite appreciated the way they did the girl (who was probably a trans guy) who wanted to be in the Jets. I think they did look at that element through a modern lens and made it much better and more realistic. And “Gee Officer Krupke” is still a very timely comment on the social systems in the U.S. today.
Wonderfull!!!!
