Ban Nigerian Music in Cameroon? / Freaky Table

- The conversation gets heated when C.Y International, Comedian and actor, calls for the ban of Nigerian music in Cameroon, saying they have refused to open their market and media space to embracing other music from other African nations.
Music star Stanley Enow was also spotted early January pleading with local DJs to prioritize local music over Nigerian music at Cameroonian events.
This week, we invite Phillbill Beats, music artist / producer and Prince Mykel Enobi, founder of Empire Company on the Table to help answer these two pertinent questions:
1. Is Nigeria obliged to consume Cameroonian music?
2. Given that Nigeria is Africa's leading entertainment nation, is her market and media open enough to embracing other African music?
What's your thought?

Am a cameroonian and nothing will stop me from enjoying Nigeria music because it's good. You guys should upgrade like Nigerians
Yh people like you should elevate Cameroon music am from Nigeria i love that
I'm Nigerian, big ups to you all. However just like every other Nigerian in the comments section, if Cameroon brings out a song that we Nigerians can vibe to, trust me we will vibe to it. Remember in 2019, a certain Ugandan song called "Parte after Parte" blew up in Nigeria and is still a club banger in Nigeria. No hate baby, just do better!
I wonder, God bless you
My brother! We even use the song dey yab politicians wey dey jump from one party to another. What they don't know is what we nigerians have is Love. And what do they say love does? It conquers All. That is the secret to our success. God Bless Naija!
What of diamond platinumz, Uhuru, Nasty C, Casper nyovest, AKA to name a few?
I can under Cameroon. Let them play their music more. Not to ban Nigerian music completely but they need to appreciate their own too.
Well said 🧢
Nigerian sound penetrates my soul...here from Uganda 🇺🇬,keep it up we support quality. We rather collaborate with Nigerians than hating

I am Nigerian, and I didn't even realize that Nigerian music and culture have exploded to an extent that people want it banned. Well, wait until Nigerian leadership figures out what Government is about. Nigerian Government is holding the country back.

Nigerians are creative let's accept that and move forward plz!!! They are no.1 in africa whether you love them or not. Don't kill your self 🤣🤣🤣, much love from Uganda ❤️❤️🇳🇬🇳🇬
Thanks
We are very hardworking, that's what the Africans seem not to understand. A Nigerian can have a banger that is the rave of the moment yet h is sleeping in the music studio creating more and more music, no dull moment at all.
Blessing from Nigeria
The truth is other African countries have dominated music industry in that past too. I remember listening to Congolese Makosa growing up in Nigeria. Just make good sound, people will listen, do collabo to piggyback on successful artists.
@@philphil2652 Thanks for reminding other Nigerians that other countries dominated africa . Congo ( kinshasa) dominated Africa from the 60s up to 2000s . SOME Nigerians forget that AWILO LONGOMBA a Congolese artist became a phenomenon in Nigeria.
And Nigeria has been dominating africa for the last 15 years.
Congolese dominated africa from 60s to 2000s = more than 40 years.
I'm Cameroonian, and I want to let people know that they should not buy into the hype of the hate. Cameroonians love Nigerians and such has created a lot of bitterness in the hearts of underperforming artists...rather than take accountability and go back to the drawing board, they want to blame Nigerians which I find childish. Peace and love everywhere man, we Africans gotta learn from each other and grow better
Yo this talk is nonsense
I am not Nigerian but Nigerian music are making Africa proud no cap they have the best sound in the world right now everybody is vibing to afrobeat so stop hating
Honestly from their accent, I thought they were Nigerians until I understood what the discussion Was all about.
We're all the same people.
Thank you for saying that. we're all the same people.
Am from Southern Cameroon. I think our problem is we don't want change. Our music is not popular because we are playing an inferior form of Nigerian music. Cameroonians should accept evolution.
We are Genetically and culturally even spiritually related before those that visited us with bad intentions came over with them saperation method and now we are hating on each other. I was surprised when I find out that they're Cameronias I thought those people were really IBO MEN in the beginning of the show.
We are not the same people. But we should be united as different people.

Congolese girl here🙂 don’t think banning Nigerian music will do anything. I think Cameroon artists should work harder to create an original sound and be consistent with it. It will blow the whole of Africa. We are all Brothers and sisters regardless of which African country, let’s preach love instead
awilo is still a legend in Nigeria because he gave us good song
I have never had a congolese friend, I’m nigerian… can we be friends?
I am Cameroonian, from Bamenda. When our artists start talking this way, I fear they are at the end of their wit. they are losing their vision. if they do anything better than the Nigerian artists, I will consume as well. let them concentrate and big up.
Nigeria my second country, you guys are blessed. I was in ghana last year, I hear Nigeria music everywhere, I was also in south africa and kenya, they playing Nigeria music, even on the streets.
Whenever you're in Nigeria hit me up I promise to host you.. Can I have your number
As a Liberian I believe I believe we honestly don’t need to jealous one another. If you want to shine, shine with them
Thank you bro 🙌🏾
Truth
Tell the local champion cy
Nigerians think Cameroonians and Ghanaians are their best allies but I've seen that the country that has always been consistent in supporting Nigerians is liberia.
Liberians and Sierra Leoneans are the biggest supporters of Nigeria, not Ghana or Cameroon or Senegal.unfortunately we Nigerians don’t see it .
I really love how an average Cameroonian can speak English and French fluently. You guys are good
Bro, it's so nice, I don't know how they do it
All the hate Nigeria gets, must be tough being that big in Africa, everyone just wants to see you fall just so they can get to the top.
They do not know that you do not climb a ladder by pulling people down, you climb by actually climbing. All the best Nigeria 🇳🇬🇳🇬
Love you man
True. Sometimes I feel sorry for Nigerians. The hate they get is absurd.
Banning Nigerian music or limiting to promit Cameroonian culture is hate? You Nigerians are so full of yourselves
@@tbg6070 have you ban or considered banning South African, Congolese, Jamaican, Ghanaian, American or British music in Cameroon? Why single out 'Nigerian music' for the ban? It's clearly targeted hate. No matter how you try to garnish it, we have seen the ingredients already.
Let me advice you for free = Trying to grow your own by stopping Nigerian musicians from entering Cameroon, by forcing DJ's, bars etc to not play Nigerian music?? That's not promoting Cameroon, that's simply dragging down Nigeria, you promote Cameroon by improving Cameroon not by doing things or putting measures to harm Nigeria. Why not say train Cameroonian musicians on the business of music and develop their talents that'll be better and more productive than saying ban Nigerian music, if you ban Nigerian music, Jamaican, Congolese or American music will take over simple. People are not listening to Cameroonian music because it's not good, not because Nigerian music is available. If it was good people would listen to both Cameroon music and still listen to K-Pop, I've played Nigerian music and had strangers ask the name of the song and artist because it was good, K-Pop and Hip-hop are both trending in USA and South Korea, south Korea didn't ban American music for K-pop to grow in South Korea, but if they had do you think USA wouldn't have retaliated? , Jamaican music trends worldwide they haven't ban American, Latin American, south Korean music in their country. I know Nigerians who were crazy over Justin Bieber, I had a guy in class in Nigeria who used to call himself Lil Wayne, now there is a girl I met who speaks south Korean in Nigeria because of K-pop and K-drama, same with India Bollywood, zcinema and so on used to be and still is big in Nigeria esp amongst women due to their love series, but it hasn't killed Nollywood till today, Nollywood is very good at comedy, African culture, drama etc Bollywood cannot replace that, USA cannot show Nigeria the way Nollywood can despite their money and resources, Lil Wayne, Bob Marley and co. Didn't kill Nigerian music industry, those guys are legends in their fields but there are times you want to shake waist who or just party and then you need Omahlay or FireboyDML or Runtown, Look at me now cannot occupy that space On the Low by Burna boy occupies there are times you want Burna boys on the low and there are times you would want busta rhymes.
Nigeria just got better at music and production and all that and now is selling side by side with global heavyweights Nollywood, Hollywood and Bollywood will not kill each other. Instead they'll work together, look at Burna boys features, these guys are all trains on different tracts, how fast or slow train A in Europe goes will not affect train B in Nigeria or train C in Cameroon.
This is like a poor man thinking if the rich man dies he'll become rich, it doesn't work that way his son or someone else will become rich but not you a stranger in another country. If all the Billionaires die would that make you a Billionaire? If all the current musicians stop making music will you have all their fans? NO.
ua-cam.com/video/CvXnSKLU9J8/v-deo.html
If Cameroon music is good and CONSISTENT, we will listen and forget other sounds. But now its kot yet that case. NIGERIA is leading the Africa, abeg leave us to enjoy

@Fati Osman What is this one saying? Are you in Nigeria?
@Fati Osman Where are you in Nigeria?
We Nigeria are the best abeg haters keep hating 😅
Listening to this discussion, I feel more proud as a Nigerian than I ever felt. Despite the rubbish our government officials are doing to our imagine, the entire world can still see 👀 our talents and shining stars. I would advise the Cameroonians to find a way to collaborate with Nigerians artists and make Africa great instead of calling for banning our music. Share love 💘 not hate.
😂 Nigerian music pressing necks since like 1570 😂
True😂😂
🤣🤣🤣
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂…..good one
Cameroon should play good music and Nigerians will vibe to it. There was a time Congo music was reigning, it was everywhere in Nigeria but Nigerians never complained or thought about banning it.
Now Afrobeats is hot, many countries in Africa want to ban it.
Where's the pan African spirit? You people should go back to basics, create your own unique sound that's authentic to your culture, also do collabos with other artistes esp from Nigeria- that's how you will succeed, not by banning Naija music.
So if you ban it in Cameroun, will you also go ban it in Europe, US and everywhere Afrobeats is popular? Even the American music industry, one of the most difficult in the world to penetrate, Naija Afrobeats has broken through.
This should be a thing of joy for all Africans but all we see from some fellow Africans is hate and jealousy. How can you people grow with so.much hate and bitterness in your hearts and minds?
As next door neighbours, come and learn how Nigerians succeeded in the competitive music industry so you too can succeed not this childish, petty talk of ban
Well said my sister.. The hate is just too much from every angle..I believe we should continue to love our fellow Africans even though some may hate us.. I believe that is why The Lord is blessing us more.
@Judith Ikpe Am sorry but I will do what Jesus Christ commanded us to do. "Love those who hate you".
I am a Cameroonian but i love what you have written. You have spoken well. I love Naija music and love cameroon music infact african music as a whole. If they sing good songs we will support them. Moreso theres no unity between the Cameroonian artist everyone feels they are the best. As such they dont want to collaborate with each other. this degree of pride greatly destroys them and then industry. Theres no need for the hate
@Niger Delta mirror TV- don't mind them. Na jealousy go kill some people. While is that man talking anyway? Who is or will listen to him? Not even Cameroonians themselves, how know good music, listen to good music and dance to good music. Up your games guys and if u are good Nigerians and people all over the world will take to your music. You don't promote banning other people music to promote your own. It's mean u are not good enough to compete. If u go to Nigeria as a Cameroonian and u are good u will break into naija market, to promoters will sign u unto their label and u will become a star. We don't descriminate even though some Africans descriminate against us. There are Nigerians music Artists promoting non-Nigerians musicians. That's who we are, that's what we are. The ocean is big for however want to catch fish.
I rest my case.
calm down my sister
In the 1990s, there a certain Mbila Belle from Country, her songs were popular in Nigeria and no one complained.
Nigerians don't care where the music come from, if the music is good we will listen.

I'm Nigerian and this was a very good discussion. Great conversation! To my fellow Nigerians commenting without having watched the full 42 mins of the discussion, they were not "hating" on Nigeria or proposing a ban. Watch the full interview before commenting. In summary, they were responding to a comedian that apparently suggested a ban on Nigerian music in Cameroon in order to promote more local /Cameroonian music/culture. Everybody on this panel was against the idea of banning Nigerian music but they discussed ways on how local Cameroonian music can be promoted and consumed in Cameroon. It was a good discussion that was meant for a Cameroonian audience.
Exactly people didn't watch the whole video and they don't like reading so they will just comment before thinking.
when congo music was the highest in Africa Nigerians was the highest who shows love to congo and Côte d'Ivoire music at last Nigerians put on weight in music those music makes Nigerians to wake-up in music, we Nigerians never jealous and we can never do that! you guys should take it easy

I listened so attentively to all of your contributions and worries about the Nigerian music dominance in Cameroun and it was all coming from a place of love for your country. My contribution and suggestion is to the Cameroonian artists to go back to the drawing board and into their studios to WORK HARDE. Listen to foreign genres and copy a little bit of the tunes they can and add their unique tunes and lyrics as well. That will improve and give the Cameroonian music an identity for sure. Take it or leave it, once a good music is out there, people automatically are drawn to it, regardless if it is a Nigerian, Ghanaian, Mozambique or Cameroonian tune. GET BACK TO WORK. BACK TO THE DRAWING BOARD AND WORK, WORK, WORK!! And hopefully but surely, your hardwork will pay sooner or later.
Thank you very much for this comment! This is spot on...
Oga Dermot Wallace. You have spoken well. As a Nigerian, I don't care where a sound comes from, if it's good, I vibe.
I think they didn’t take your advice cos it’s been almost 3 years and Nigeria music is still moving higher and haven’t seen the light of Cameroon music.
@@danielwitse3381 Sadly so however, let's give up on them yet.

That Naija guy that said that there are laws in place helping Nigerian music doesn't know what he's saying. There is no single law in place regulating music in Nigeria.
My guy, there was a law and kind of restriction 80/20 during the time of obasanjo....
@@onyiascorner869 Well, I'm not aware of that. But we also need to consider all the problems our upcoming artist have to face in Nigeria, especially with piracy. Social media has changed everything now. Today, any new artist can blow with the help of social media even before an investor or record label finds you. The only condition is that your music has to be good. Fireboy and Oman Lay are a perfect example.
I wonder where he saw the law in Nigeria protecting Nigerian music. They made good music just at the time Ray Power was commissioned and Kenny Ogungbe and Dayo Oguneye of the radio station gave them the platform to showcase. "Boom" everybody started listening and making Nigerian music. As long as it was good it was aired.
There are no law protection Nigerian music
@@onigemohabeeb8338 you need to do research about it yourself. Am telling what I know. Nigerians did not just ditched foreign music (mostly America) because we started production good music. There was a regulatory policy during obasanjo tenure through the ministry of information and culture that mandated Nigerian radio stations and DJs to play 80% of local content. This increased the acceptability of Nigeria music and also increased in competition among artiste. And overtime the quality of music and music video improved and Nigerians in diaspora did a marvelous work outside the country marketing our contents. Do your research.....
Let's say the truth Nigerian artists are the best right now, they're competing with international artists like américain, inited kingdom, i'm not a Nigerian, but it's good to recognise the talented artists, we must be unite ,let's be pround of Nigerian artists it's Who's winning.
Nigerians are very smart, they are the most intelligent people in the world. Nigeria is well known for their intelligence and creativity anywhere they go, when you talk about Nigeria they are smart in all fields medicine, science, technology, IT, entrepreneurship economics etc. in-fact Nigerian are very resilient. they travels a lot, there is no place in this world you can’t find them, they are all over besides that, they are the only country in the world that are not racist, they are lovely people. They love people who hate them most, this is why they are very special, so the world should learn from them. They never hide there identity, they are always proud of who they are. This is one of the secret why they grow higher.
There was a time Nigeria had sound problem. Where our artists were trying to sound foreign. It was not until they started making beats that connected with the culture with tastes of modern flavour, getting inspiration from multiple African countries and boom.
Very true 👍👍
Eedris abdulkarem, maintain, rugged man etc you are right about when Nigerian artistes tried to sound foreign
I am a cameroun pure but I don support this BS how can we even think of saying such if cameroun music today is not able to compete at the top level with other countries music then let them get back to the lab and do some good work. Nigeria music have taking all over the world music industry, even the British now is using Nigeria music to have more viewers on UA-cam by reacting to Nigeria music , no need to hate on Nigeria music they have work hard for it
Fact
It's almost like Africa can't escape self-destruction. Would you have a problem American music or French music? Have you called for a ban on French culture? Rubbish
I'm Cameroonian and to be fair American or French music are not popular no more here. Only African music (Congo, Côte d'Ivoire, Nigeria, Ghana for the most part). You'll hardly hear a South African, Tanzanian or kenyan song in Cameroon. Frankly I don't understand why they complain because Cameroonian artistes are pretty popular in African french speaking countries of West and Central and in the Carribeans. The Loko, Mr Leo, Daphné, Darina, Dipanda, Stanley Enoh or Tenor are doing good. Salatiel is even in the Beyoncé's Black is King album. I went one time at show in Yaounde and I saw young girls going crazy (crying and yelling) for the Cameroonian stars...
He is right though... Smart thinking like a Nigerian. Pay money and do collab!! But I doubt any Nigerian artist would want to collab with you guys now that you are hating on them.
They need to be good enough to collab with our Naija Artists.
They need interviews with our artists to deserve a collaboration
The Nigerian music industry had gone past this stage as at 2004. You’ve got a lot of job to do.
If only you know that music is the only industry that is working in Nigeria now and it was formed by Nigerians without any government help. Nigerians are pushing forward in competing with the world.
You guys are having good conversation and you all makes so much points especially the guy in the middle he is very much enlightened in government settings.
It will be a very wrong step to create hate against Nigerians because of their current success in music. Nigeria is one of the largest country that transport foreign music in the past and we all enjoyed without any form of complaints. There was a time it's was all USA, Congo South Africa ivory coast Ghana even Cameroon.
It was only hard work by the previous artist that maintained their group that gave Nigeria this recent success.
It takes a long process to build up whatever you wish to build, Nigeria is consuming her music almost 100% now and it's very hard to compete with Nigeria in any form.
Just do your thing and be focused, one day you will have something to celebrate for and it will be a good thing to even invite those artist and mix them with the local artist for connection purposes.
You guys had beautiful conversation and I'm really impressed.❤️🇳🇬
I’m Nigerian, thank you for being objective in your debate, one love ✊🏾
You can't chase Nigerian music away from your country, you collaborate with them,do lots of features, Ghanaians are doing the same.
Y'all are just jealous and displaying your hatred, Even if you ban Nigeria music in Cameroon it won't make your music industry or music better than the Nigerian music industry. Nigeria music is worldwide now your jealousy and hate can't stop it. Is either you go hard or go home.

Y can't they say ban American or European music in Cameroon.

I want to add more one thing, as you can't run away from your shodow so you cannot change yourself from Nigeria.
Nigeria and Cameroon is just few km away, faces are the same, our tongues are the same, our thoughts and reasoning are the same, most our food are the same. The only different from Nigeria and Cameroon that is obviously is Nigerians inability to speak French.
Don't hate your brothers because we are the same, Nigeria as the most populated Africa country have never impacted other countries with music in the past because we never really had the strong artist in past that hit other countries except Fella.
This Nigeria current wave of music started just few years ago, over the years we have been enjoying all music from the United States and all Africa countries.
And you forgot Sunny Okosun. I'm Cameroonian and we share with Nigeria one of the most popular artist in Africa: Prince Nico Mbarga
Is nice to hear 1 of ur guest talked about makoso in d 70s, 80s n 90s makosa from cameroon was all over Nigeria. Our Entertainment industry has gone through a lot of changes n development. There was a time that when u go to clubs all u hear is foreign music but today is different.
We don't fight anyone but just grow ourself
You can't compete with the Nigerian music industry thats the issue. It's like runners saying Usain Bolt needs to be banned from a race in order for them to win. People outside don't know your artists, it's not the fault of Nigeria. When makossa was big in Nigeria, which Nigerian complained?
Bro what you’re saying is not true at all, as big as Nigeria is, you guys banned food and even closed borders with Niger, Benin and Cameroon just because you want to protect Nigeria industry and agriculture. So tell me why are you complaining now while other want to do the same?
I remember Nigeria government refusing to sign the project of free trade intra-Africa just because they thought it will kill Nigeria industry but now after second thought they agreed and signed it because they know that Nigeria can compete, invade others and even develop it industry. So you guys can always profit on others but no reciprocity with you right?
Personally I’m again the ban because the fault is firstly Cameroonian, bad music with no identity, worst distribution and also lack of professionalism. Cameroon need to sit and work on that, but you guys can’t condemn us to try to do some for our culture while you’re doing the same in the other hand.
Nigeria close border bc of Asian rice not bc of African produce.
