Basically for most speedruns (which use the like safest memorized route) you play either wolverine or psylocke on the queen brood level. Then you legit use beast the rest of the game. His jump punch basically can stun lock most bosses in the game if done right and he can actually dash through the whole apocalypses level. It does take an autistic level of time to learn though haha. This game has many advanced techniques but really play how you can to beat it. Each character has its own final level which I think is really cool.

I love your videos. I’ve been trying to watch all of them. I have a ton of nostalgia with the SNES but don’t know many games, so your channel is amazing for new insight. My favorite video you’ve done is the one with the 4 minute intro 😂
Not only is this one of the BEST X-Men games, it's one of the best SNES games, HANDS DOWN! I remember getting so good at the game that I started playing the game with each character exclusively after the first few stages!
If you haven't played it, I recommend The Ninja Warriors on SNES. It's a similar style of game and it is a good bit better in my opinion, though this one is good.
My favorite X-Men game is X-Men 2 - Clone Wars for Genesis. You can actually teleport around with Nightcrawler, and Magneto joins as a playable character after you beat him. The disappointing thing about every X-Men game is there are always characters left out. But that's only because there are so many great characters with powers that would make them so much fun to play.
The quickest way I've found to get through the lava tunnel in the Apocalypse level is with Wolverine - just use his dash attach and you can slip under the gates before they close, and fighting Apocalypse with Wolverine is a piece of cake as you can just spam that same dash attack and rip him to shreds. Gambit works well enough against the Brood Queen, but if you mess up a 3 card attack input it's easy for the brood to swarm you. I found it's easier with Wolverine here as well; you have to use the dash attack on her tail until it falls off, and then just do a basic jump attack continuously until you push her off-screen. Once that happens just keep doing the jump attack repeatedly against the edge of the screen and you'll instantly kill any brood that fly in, as well as hit the Queen the instant she tries to force her way back on-screen. For Omega Red, use Beast, you can do a 2 punch attack to stun him, then immediately follow it up with a headbutt to drain his health in no time.
If you’re using Cyclops, you should mainly use his jumping optic blasts. There’s no recoil and it makes the lava section much easier You could cheese Magneto with Logan or Psylocke but if you want a challenge, try beating him with Cyclops’ slow ass without losing a life
People already mentioned that Beast and Wolverine are best for getting through the lava section, but Psylocke’s slide works reasonably well to get under the downward-closing gates and her psychic knife will take out the couple that close upward. You can also get through with Gambit’s flip kick (just repeat it, don’t walk at all) if you feel the need. I actually found Cyclops the worst one to use for the lava!
I use Wolverine for most levels. He can avoid most of the lava level by climbing up the passage at 3:32. His charging attack (forward, forward, attack) and diving claw (down+attack while in the air) can be used to tear through barriers quickly. Those two moves are also great for charging bosses like you did at 4:32. Then hold up and slash to knock down a boss before they can launch an attack. He's ironically good against Magneto, too. You showed Psylocke using her knee strike, but Wolverine just needs to jump and slash at the right time.
I love that you went back and took another look at this. That's a privilege that I think folks like you should be allowed more often. Like you said, that video is from 10 years ago and 2 minutes is not enough time to do this game justice. Thanks for going back and giving this game it's due spotlight.
I remember my parents getting me this game along with Mortal Kombat back in the fall of 95'. I was in the 3rd grade at the time and I remember playing those games a lot back then. Good times.
Good review! A decent licensed game!? This looks surprisingly fun! I will definitely check this one out. There also is a patch for this game that adds a save feature!
There's also an OpenBOR fan made game for Avengers Infinity War, which has a remastered version of this game as a bonus that you can play, with extra characters and improved controls.
One of my favorite games for the Super Nintendo. I've owned the cartridge since 1996, and still play it somewhat regularly. A FEW NOTES: The "Little Red Goblins" are called TUSKETTES. Tusk produces them from his back, as seen at the end of the level when you fight him. --Also, you can use Wolverine in the lava level to bypass the barriers altogether. If you time his air-dash attack (Jump, then Down+Y) just right, you can actually dash past the barriers before they close. In other words: they close behind you after you've already passed by them. It takes a little practice to get the timing right. With Wolverine, you only need to pass by 3 of the barriers and then there is an alternate path where you can climb up to skip the rest of them. --Wolverine's ground-dash attack is the best way to defeat apocalypse. The same way that you defeat Juggernaut. You got that one right. --I find cyclops to be the best X-Man to use against Omega Red. You don't even need to move Cyclops from where he starts in the level. When Omega Red drops down on the opposite side of the screen, give him an optic blast. When Omega Red drops down beside you, give him the spin kick (Up+Y). Just keep alternating between these 2 attacks as Omega Red moves around. This, also, takes a little practice to get the timing right, Omega Red moves fast. I hadn't heard of the fan-made version of this game. I'll have to check that out. Thanks for the video!
Wolverine is fast enough that he can get through the lava tunnel in Apocalypse's stage without even needing to break any of the barriers. Seriously. Just charge full steam ahead through the first and third one and he'll get through before they can drop all the way down, and jump over the second one. Then climb the wall and you're set. Using Beast and walking on the ceiling also works. He's as fast as Wolverine on the ground, and the barriers break from just two punches when he's doing the ceiling walk.
It’s interesting that Psylocke is in almost every video game, but barely in any of the shows or movies. If you just played the games, you’d think that she was one of the main X-Men.
It is alleged that marvel was concerned about asian psylocke with european betsy's personality....as there are accusations that ninja psylocke is actually a racist interpretation.
X-Men '97 was so good with that breakbeat hard cut traditional comic art flashy break through animation style, that really cracked some synapses on my brain. Very refreshing.
I loved this game (as well as War of the Gems) growing up. They’re still doing great work now, but nothing will ever match my love of 90s SNES Capcom…amazing times
We had the best Cartoon's back in the Day. X-Men, Thunder Cat's, Transformers, Inspector Gadget. He-Man, GI Joe. The Art Work was amazing and the Story telling was just as good. I really miss them Saturday Mornings. Truthfully the TV Shows were better also. Great video Bro, keep up the great work.

I ended up with this game after trading something else that was better for it. I really wanted to like this game as the graphics and sound were very good. However, the difficulty and often times stiff playing characters really turned me off. In the end, I really wanted it to be more like the legendary X-men arcade game that had been released a couple years prior.
A friend of mine had this one and I borrowed it for a little bit and really loved the concept. I hadn't heard about the game in advance. Incidentally, I just reconnected with that friend a year ago and have been helping him with the retro-gaming hobby and showed him this game as an example of some things. I've revisited it a few times in the past and have gone back and forth on it at times thinking it was majorly flawed but okay, or somewhat flawed but rather good but a bit short of great. There are some issues. The insta-kill sections are annoying with little margin for error. Wolverine can take that shaft as a shortcut at 3:32 so that's a nice touch at least. There's some annoying slow down as I recall. The move inputs were not as responsive or reliable as Street Fighter 2. The damage rate is way too high, and some enemies have crazy reach. With that said, the concept is good, and the basic gameplay is quite fun. Some parts and bosses can be annoying, but are not too big a deal with some practice, and all characters can handle the tough bosses. The characters feel a tad slow for the Magneto fight, but I figured out how to make that work, though it's a bit tedious. The Ninja Warriors is a similar game, a single-plane beat-em-up game, though it is more focused on the beating as opposed to stage hazards. It actually came out before X-Men here, and I think The Ninja Warriors is quite a bit better, and it's one of my absolute favorite SNES games. So if this game looks interesting to people, they should also check out The Ninja Warriors. There's also a semi-sequel to this X-Men game, Marvel Super Heroes War of the Gems(not to be confused with the arcade fighting game) that's worth a play. With all that said, even though I prefer The Ninja Warriors for a game in this style, X-Men is still good and it's nice to have another single-plane beat-em-up on the system that's a good time. And save states take some of the sting out if you're playing it any way you can. I did pick up a loose cart about a decade ago though, no winky faces needed there.
I loved playing this game as a kid and I recently bought the Arcade 1UP XMen 97 Edition cabinet. I was elated to see that this game was included considering it’s a console game.
You don't need to break all barriers in the lava tunnel area, just move faster than the barriers, psylocke slide or wolverine dash are both enough to outpace the barriers.
I was big into X-men, and I got this along with Donkey Kong Country for my 5th birthday when I was 5. I've never beaten it but whenever I set up a new portable or PC for emulation, this is a must.
I love Mutant Apocalypse, from the gameplay to the soundtrack, one of the best X-Men games alongside X-Men: Children of the Atom and X-Men vs Street Fighter.
Your original video highlighted a few game mechanics that allowed me to go much farther into the game than I used to when I rented it as a kid. I've actually gone on to finish the game. I appreciate the second pass, this game has kind of a well earned mixed reputation, but it's a good game when you dig down a bit and figure out a few things.
90s Psylocke used to do things to me as a kid. Even her 16bit version in this game. I know some people will say that is pathetic, but I was like 11, and we didn't have the internet back then, sometimes pixalated booty was the best us kids could get between diva matches in WWF and late night skin-a-max.
3:40 I HATED this lava as a kid, never got past it. So damn cheap. And it’s so frustrating, because WHY are your characters walking SO slow??? Run for your lives!!
Yeah the SNES era of Capcom was amazing and still one of my favorites ever. I know some people feel let down slightly by this game but I absolutely love it. Music, graphics the whole thing the only disappointment is we didn't get a follow-up that doubled down on everything.
Last year I played this game for the first time since elementary school and I was pretty shocked at just how much I loved it! War of the Gems is also pretty good though not quite as good, I feel. P.S. in the lava chase level if you pick Wolverine, you can climb up a hole in the ceiling near the beginning of the level and take an alternate route, effectively skipping the lava chase.
I remember beating this game about 4 years ago and I thought it was decent. Some of the sound effects like Cyclops laser attack is one of the greatest sound effects on the whole system.
The easiest way to pass the volcanic lava level in Revisiting X-Men: Mutant Apocalypse is actually with Wolverine. He can avoid the lava by climbing one of the walls, skipping the entire section where the gates close. You don't even have to destroy the gates-just climb and bypass that part altogether.
TBH, glad you're revisiting it. It's still one of the best X-men games ever made. Didn't know about the fan remake, definitely gonna be checking it out. Ah, tbh, Wolverine's able to get through most of the levels w/o issue in my experience.
Omega Red says, "Well, I'm going to stand here and flail my tendrils like THIS! And if you get hit, it's your owwwwwnnn fault!"
Wolverine retorts, "Well I'm just gonna slash air, like THIS, slash slash! And if you get hit, it's your owwwwwnnn fault!"

There’s no recoil and it makes the lava section much easier
You could cheese Magneto with Logan or Psylocke but if you want a challenge, try beating him with Cyclops’ slow ass without losing a life
People already mentioned that Beast and Wolverine are best for getting through the lava section, but Psylocke’s slide works reasonably well to get under the downward-closing gates and her psychic knife will take out the couple that close upward.
Didn't finish the video before commenting?
Bet you he didn't even start it
never got to play the SNES X-men games, outside of Arcade's revenge. Loved the Genesis X-men games though.
Awesome game. I still have my old snes cart.
Hell yeah! X-Men '97 is awesome. Do a video for Sega Genesis X-Men & Clone Wars!
The music is definitely upbeat 3 worthy ;)
Wolverine is fast enough that he can get through the lava tunnel in Apocalypse's stage without even needing to break any of the barriers. Seriously. Just charge full steam ahead through the first and third one and he'll get through before they can drop all the way down, and jump over the second one. Then climb the wall and you're set.
Using Beast and walking on the ceiling also works. He's as fast as Wolverine on the ground, and the barriers break from just two punches when he's doing the ceiling walk.
Props on the Bonded by Blood reference. Masterpiece!
I have fond memories of playing this during a birthday sleepover as a child... Good times.
I prefer the Genesis games, you could scrap theough those. This one you have to memorize (a kick Capcom was on at the time) or game over.
X-Men '97 was so good with that breakbeat hard cut traditional comic art flashy break through animation style, that really cracked some synapses on my brain.
Very refreshing.
You should review the sequel Marvel Super Hero War of thr Gems !!!
This was a favorite of mine as a kid
I loved this game (as well as War of the Gems) growing up. They’re still doing great work now, but nothing will ever match my love of 90s SNES Capcom…amazing times
That lava flow lol Bring back my teenage PTSD! Great review! Great game!
One pixel of it touches you and it’s instant death. Rage. Quit.

Bang your head against the stage as metal takes its price!"
One of my favourite SNES Games. Still do playing it from time to time and yes you are right, the Soundtrack is awesome.
Disney really needs to capitalize on the popularity of X-Men 97 and release a compilation of the classic X-Men games

I remember seeing this game for the first time when it came out and being so impressed by its appearance. It was too hard for me at that age, but I still loved it. Went back to it a few years ago and finally beat it.
It's a shame how absurdly hard some of these old games could get. Don't get me wrong: I enjoy a challenge. But some of these gorgeous graphics will never see the light of day to some because of walling difficulties.
At least we have save states nowadays
Nice! That Alien vs Predator fan-made looks pretty damn good as well. Actually, this guy's got a BUNCH of really good ones. We should all support him so he"s able to continue creating these awesome games for us. Thanks for sharing this! Absolutely awesome!!!👍

one of the best snes games ever. love how picking your character and learning the game is actually important
I ended up with this game after trading something else that was better for it. I really wanted to like this game as the graphics and sound were very good. However, the difficulty and often times stiff playing characters really turned me off. In the end, I really wanted it to be more like the legendary X-men arcade game that had been released a couple years prior.
Even the levels looked borrowed from Megaman X. 2:00 Sting Chameleon. 2:40 Armored Armadillo. 4:55 Spark Mandrill.
Classic game, good times and memories! Thanks for this!
3:18 Oh, oh no, here comes the Fleaman PTSD.
I loved playing this game as a kid and I recently bought the Arcade 1UP XMen 97 Edition cabinet. I was elated to see that this game was included considering it’s a console game.
I seem to recall often using Wolverine or Beast to access bonus areas. By which I mean stuff like an alternate route with a 1 Up.
I absolutely love this game. Beat it a ton back in the day. I would constantly replay the Tusk boss fight.
Top shelf, grade A game. Nuff said.
The first time Capcom got their hands on XMen - beautiful semi-Street Fighter mechanics, loved it since it came out
Been a long, long time since I’ve seen a good old snes drunk video. Gotta see what I’ve been missing now
You don't need to break all barriers in the lava tunnel area, just move faster than the barriers, psylocke slide or wolverine dash are both enough to outpace the barriers.
I was big into X-men, and I got this along with Donkey Kong Country for my 5th birthday when I was 5. I've never beaten it but whenever I set up a new portable or PC for emulation, this is a must.
I was shocked by how beautiful it looked when i was a kid. It's a really fun game.
I love Mutant Apocalypse, from the gameplay to the soundtrack, one of the best X-Men games alongside X-Men: Children of the Atom and X-Men vs Street Fighter.
This was my favorite X-Men game on the SNES! Every character was fun to play.
The psylocke floor part is easier if you jump on them while pressing down and y. But face toward the falling tiles as you do...
The ‘97 x-men cards got me hooked as a kid
Your original video highlighted a few game mechanics that allowed me to go much farther into the game than I used to when I rented it as a kid. I've actually gone on to finish the game. I appreciate the second pass, this game has kind of a well earned mixed reputation, but it's a good game when you dig down a bit and figure out a few things.
90s Psylocke used to do things to me as a kid. Even her 16bit version in this game. I know some people will say that is pathetic, but I was like 11, and we didn't have the internet back then, sometimes pixalated booty was the best us kids could get between diva matches in WWF and late night skin-a-max.
can confirm Marvel Infinity War is phenomenal. zvitor and their team knocked it out of the park
3:40 I HATED this lava as a kid, never got past it. So damn cheap. And it’s so frustrating, because WHY are your characters walking SO slow??? Run for your lives!!
3:32 - Just take Wolvie up that wall and you escape lava room completely
Yeah the SNES era of Capcom was amazing and still one of my favorites ever. I know some people feel let down slightly by this game but I absolutely love it. Music, graphics the whole thing the only disappointment is we didn't get a follow-up that doubled down on everything.
When the ground starts falling under Psylocke, use her slide attack. You cover lots of ground and go through enemies
Last year I played this game for the first time since elementary school and I was pretty shocked at just how much I loved it! War of the Gems is also pretty good though not quite as good, I feel.
P.S. in the lava chase level if you pick Wolverine, you can climb up a hole in the ceiling near the beginning of the level and take an alternate route, effectively skipping the lava chase.
great game. i still rage quit on this game
you and i literally got into marvel comics at around the same time ! nice
I remember beating this game about 4 years ago and I thought it was decent. Some of the sound effects like Cyclops laser attack is one of the greatest sound effects on the whole system.
I’d love you to revisit some older videos! More content like this please.
Is war of the gems technically a sequel
This brought back so many memories!
The best Xmen game!!!! Amazing soundtrack too!
Can one defeat every Mega Man and Mega Man X boss with any of the powers from that game?
