  • Hey friends! In April 2021 I made a video titled, "How to Eat for $10 a Week at Aldi", and I've been meaning to circle back around to that topic and see what kind of budget grocery haul and meal plan I can do at Aldi in August 2023. Let me tell you, the 2021 prices feel like they could have been 10 years ago instead of just 2 years ago! Food prices have definitely risen and eating on a tight budget is a little harder, but absolutely still achievable!

It is really hard for us to eat cheaply. My husband is a type 2 diabetic with heart issues and I have high blood pressure and am pre diabetic. We eat no white items which we love but can't have. These are the less costly foods and the good stuff that is healthy for you costs more which is crazy. We are both retired seniors on a budget and food is where we spend the most money and I am doing my best to find cheaper options. You do a great job on these videos and I always look forward to them.

Maybe you could grow some Jerusalem artichokes. They grow like crazy and you can like ten to fifteen tubes from a single one, but you have to grow them inside pots otherwise they can destroy a garden.

For lunch you could also make French onion soup with those onions you bought. Instead of beef consommé just use some beef buillion cubes. Instead of French bread use your homemade bread, top with cheese and stuck in a toaster oven to brown it. ❤

Always put a little sugar in when you make bread dough. It will give the yeast something to feast on and make it rise better. I find that Aldi Flour doesn't rise as well as other flours you can buy. Maybe less gluten? Also, I buy the little brick cheeses at Aldi for like $1.99 and grate them myself. You get a lot more for the money and they melt better. Love your videos!

I'm 44 and grew up in a home where mom and dad grocery shopped and cooked meals. We couldn't afford to eat out. With that being said, I think many people's food budget issues stem from not knowing how to cook more than it does from affordable groceries. I know a lot of people who either weren't shown how, or didn't pay much mind to mom or dad when they were whippin up dinner. In some instances I suppose they grew up in a family that ate out a lot, and now it's a skill they could benefit from while times are tight, but they never had a need to acquire that skill.

My grandmother cooked and baked out of necessity. She grew and slaughtered her own chickens 🐔 too. However, as modernization took hold. She upgraded to modern ways as well. She went to the local butcher and never looked back! She ordered her food to her house 🏠. She had a modern refrigerator and then upgraded to gas heating her home 🏡 from a wood 🪵 burning 🔥 stove. You see, the way of the old life is left behind and new ways are way more luxurious. No. Grandmother 👵 never looked back to the old ways. She didn't long to bring her water from the deep well...when hot water flowed to her bathtub.

For people who have the time and energy and materials (a reliable fridge/freezer, cooktop and oven, pots and pans, utensils, storage containers and wrap, etc.), not knowing how to cook is definitely a barrier to eating on a budget. But for a lot of people, especially those who insufficiently housed, overworked, or have incomplete kitchen facilities and materials, being able to cook and keep food fresh is a bigger barrier than not knowing how. Stable housing is a huge problem, especially in our current rental and real estate markets. Few people consider that being evicted can mean having your belongings thrown out, including cookware.
I'm 50 and grew up in homes where both my parents cooked--my father was a terrible cook and my mother was a very good cook--and I learned basics, but mealtimes were busy. It's taken me a lifetime of TV-watching, cookbook reading, and trial and error to learn and practice techniques for making meals I didn't grow up eating. The internet is truly a blessing now for everyone who wants to explore cooking skills and meal ideas.

It's the same across the world at the moment. Three ongoing wars, oil sanctions against Russia, grain being blown up in ports in Ukraine (who are the world's biggest supplier of grain and sunflower oil) and a huge employee shortage in many non tech sectors are some of the reasons. We are a world exporter of pharma, milk, milk products, beef and pork as well as a hub for many of the world's tech industries. However we do not own any of our oil and gas fields so have to import. The price has gone up over 300%. Gas used to cost the equivalent of 19 dollars a week to heat a home and cook meals, now its the equivalent of 62 dollars a week. Similar prices for electricity too, even though 40% is wind, solar and wave generated. We will, yet again be subsidised for our energy costs by 198 dollars a month for electricity but this is a drop in the ocean compared to food costs which in some cases has increased over 200%. Be grateful you live in a country where you have your own oil and gas resources. Every day here every citizen, regardless of income, is literally a pay check away from financial distress. Oh, and we are the first country Russia intends to nuke as they keep confusing us with our neighboring country, who they hate.

For the cheese sauce you made with the gnocci, try doing a roux next time. Add one or two tablespoons of flour to the butter and veggies and stir until incorporated and no flour lumps. Then add the water and cheese last, gently stirring the whole time. You'll get a nice smooth thick sauce. (This is how you make the sauce for homemade mac and cheese.) Thanks so much for the video! I cook all the leg quarters at once then divide the meat into small portions and freeze. I add the chicken to pasta or make pot pies. I fry a little bit of sausage to add to scrambled eggs or add 1/2 a roll to substitute for the hamburger in spaghetti or hamburger helper.

I do agree though the dollar does not stretch as far so whole foods are the best options for the budget😊

Thanks so much for encouraging making your own bread! And showing an easy recipe for people who don’t have a good mixer, or the ability/time to knead/rise/knead/rise. It is so inexpensive to make your own, and very easy, too. A bread machine makes it even easier, and I found a great one for $6 at the thrift store, and use it all the time. (I see them at the thrift store pretty regularly, so keep an eye out!) Homemade bread is also an excuse to splurge on the Kerrygold butter (if you can) cause it’s amazing.

I found your video to be very timely and interesting! Kudos for your easy, and easily modified (to individual tastes), recipes!
Maybe it's just me ,a senior also with health conditions living on a very small budget , but I really don't understand why older folks who have already lived through several economic downturns/inflation aren't better prepared to meet them.
I live in one of the most expensive states in the lower 48, and even I can eat very enjoyably , without depriving myself of "treat" foods, on $60. or less (usually much less) per month. How? I have a freezer, which I bought second hand 15 years ago, learned to cook from scratch and can., and grow small amounts of veggies/herbs on my windowsills and porch.
This allows me to take full advantage of grocery/meat/vegetable sales on items I like.

Buy meats/produce once they're "discounted" and use a combination of mvp deals/online-coupons etc. As long as you use them asap or freeze they won't expire quickly. I find fruits to be difficult buying on the cheap but every so often the "pre-prepped" produce section will have steep price cuts to move product before sell by dates. The outer aisles are best for healthier alternatives, dried legumes, and plain frozen items like shrimp & veg are great options too. Pressure cooker & airfryer recipes are lifesavers btw. Goodluck.

MOST diabetics, as humans, need carbs in their daily diets. It's why the ADA and DUK both have recommended daily total carb figures. A healthy diet needs to include some carbs. While every body is unique, MOST people, including diabetics and prediabetics should include some carbs in a healthy diet. Especially complex, natural carbs like potatoes, tomatoes, and onions. Most of the meals here are actually, generally, diabetic friendly if portion control is observed.
A 2 oz. serving of pasta with Lisa's avocado and tomato sauce has approx. 280 calories and 20 g total carbs. You could easily have two servings (4 oz. of pasta).
Her bread recipe, assuming she gets 12 slices per loaf, has 28 g of carbs per slice. Add the peanut butter and banana and you're still under the recommended 60 - 70 g total carbs per meal.
4 of Lisa's cheese pierogies have approx. 40 total g of carbs. That's without the onions. The fried onion adds another 10 g.
There are only around 20 g of carbs in 1 serving of instant mash, depending on the brand and whether milk or water is used to make them. Even if you used 2 servings to make enough waffles for 1 person, you'd still be below 40 g. Add the onion, egg, and tomato and you'll not hit 55 g.
The only thing I'd not recommend is the rice dish, as white rice isn't the healthiest choice. I'd probably spend a bit more on a pouch of their brown rice and quinoa mix. It has more protein, more fiber, less salt, and less carbs than the rice. An added bonus would be that I could season it however I liked.
You CAN eat healthy and still have carbs. The Brits proved it during the war. They were encouraged to eat 12 to 16oz of potatoes and several slices of wholewheat bread every day. They came out the other side healthier than at any time in modern UK history.

My pasta dough is from my grandmother that had eight children during the depression to feed. They purchased their flour in cloth bags (made dresses and underwear from the material) had chickens so her recipe is basically the same except she added one egg for each cup of flour. Stewing hens/and or roosters were put in a big pot when done cooking in went the pasta. My son (49) asked if I would make him a pot of these Chicken & Noodles but chickens in the market just don't have enough fat to make them as tasty as they were long ago.

    • @yesiownfrodo
      @yesiownfrodo 9 місяців тому +1

Same here. The problem with the chickens today is not that they don't have enough fat, but that they are not eating insects and plants like our grandparent's chickens did. If you look under the skin of today's chickens you'll see huge yellow globs of fat as big as a dime. Unnatural. :) My grandma's chickens were flavorful but tough. LOL. But her dumplings were just like you mentioned and they were awesome. I've made them. I'm diabetic now, so those are a rare treat, best for holidays and such. Great post. :)

I'm not positive but I think in some states food stamps will cover vegetable/fruit plants. 💞
I've made dozens, maybe over 100 loaves of bread and the best way to make no bake bread is in a round ball and put it in a cast iron Dutch oven if you habe one. If not then putting it on a regular pan with a sheet underneath with a few ice cubes. The steam will help make a crispy crust. When I'm doing no knead bread I put down a couple ice cubes or I spritz the bread with water and score it across rhe top with a knife. I bake it for 30 minutes with the lid on then ~20 with the lid off. I do 400 or 425, a lot of recipes will tell you to do 450 but mine burns when I do. Also another pro tip I wish I knew sooner is to sprinkle some corn meal across the bottom of the pot or pan so the bottom doesn't burn. 👌🏻 you made me want to try my hand at making pasta!
