because of your very informative youtube site, i decided to purchase myself an audio technica at-lp120usb.... it just arrived from california last january 10 and iam about to set it after viewing your "how to install your turntable" video.... please continue to post more videos about vinyl rcords.... thank you.... YOU'RE THE MAN, jarrett....
I have gotten such an awesome education in the past 6 hours since my Christmas All-In-One debacle. I still can't believe that thing only worked for 6 hours.... Thank you, you're really good at this.
Thank you for this. I’m 57 and had separates for my record collection before I donated it to my younger brother, and I converted to cd’s. That was 20 years ago and I need to get up to speed on what’s new. I’m on a budget so this information is essential for me before I commit myself to buying and make a mistake.
1:39 - There is also a third type of turntable drive mechanism: the idler-wheel drive (or rim drive). This is similar to the belt drive, except there is a rubber idler wheel wedged in between the motor shaft and the inner rim of the platter. To achieve multiple speeds, the motor shaft has "steps" of various diameter. There are as many steps on the motor shaft as there are speeds of the platter (two for 33/45 RPM, three for 33/45/78 RPM, and four for 16/33/45/78 RPM). A mechanism connected to the speed-change lever or dial moves the idler wheel in between the appropriate step on the motor shaft and the inner rim of the platter. Idler-wheel drive was common on record changers, kiddie record players, and inexpensive stereo systems with integrated turntables. Very few, if any, turntables made today have idler-wheel drive.
You're a legend. I just bought an AT LP60 with TPAB and The Money Store to start off my record collection. Your channel is just as entertaining as it is helpful, thanks :)
I just ordered a Fluance RT85. Looking forward to setting it up and finally get to listen to the new vinyl I have picked up but was unable to play due to not having a turntable.
You’re videos have been very informative and interesting to watch I have a Audio Technica lp 60 coming and with your videos help I hope to create a very nice vinyl collection ,thanks for the great videos!
Good to see Dummy in the background…..one of my favourites in the early 90’s 🥰were Portishead well known in USA/Canada? Looking into a turntable for my son, more complicated than I realised !
Love your videos and approach to conveying quality information!!! Could you tell me which 7" adaptor (simple item but stuff is often not created equally) did you show in the video?
I just bought the Audio Technica AT-LP120. It'll arrive on Wednesday, so I'll be doing the set up on that evening. Just gonna spend it watching all of your record player set up videos! Thanks so much! By the way do you have any classical LPs in your collection? Just interested, as I almost exclusively collect classical and opera (with musicals and jazz thrown in there from time to time).
At 2:15 of your video, you said we’ll get into why the record mat can affect sound quality later, but you never went back to it. I just found my mom’s old Technics phonograph from the 70’s and everything looks like it’s going to work great (like the motor, arm, needle, and even the platter) but I haven’t tried to play an album yet because the record mat is warped. 1) it sounds like better made mats (like ones that are not thin plastic) are going to produce better sound quality? and 2) where can I buy a new high quality replacement record mat for this phonograph, especially if I’m not sure of the model? Thanks for your time.
Jarrett, I’m digging your Portishead LP your showing in the background, I’ve heard that the pressing isn’t great quality, any comments? I’d love to get a good pressing for myself
I know that the LP-120 does not have a ground but you should mention that most turntables require a ground wire to the preamp/amp to eliminate hum in players that don't have a built in preamp.
really looking forward to your anti skating instructions as there are millions of opinions on that in the net. i really havent found a "solution" for me. please do some research on that toppic before the video, and i am very interested to see what your suggestion will be. greetz.. :)
You forgot about the all important all crucial strobe light for speed checking. Now many turntables don't have them they just want you to trust that they are engineered well enough to spin at the right speed but Technics not only give you strobe but let you play with the pitch so you can improve on the music if you feel the artists didn't do the best job! How genius is that?
Do you advice people on a particular vinyl turntable? as i want to buy Ion Audio Vinyl Transport VJB01 Portable Briefcase Style Turntable. Should i go for it.
I had a question i noticed apparently that the Audio technica lp120 changed there AT95E to AT-VMN95E would the new model of stylus fit on my original cartridge? I don't want to go through the hassle of changing everything and disconnect and reconnect the little wires
This may be a dumb question but I must ask. I am pretty set on buying an audio technica lp-60 tomorrow. Will I be able to listen to records with out speakers?
MsMovieCollector No. You need speakers to listen to music on the LP60. If you have the money, I would recommend bookshelf speakers, but if you have old computer speakers lying around, those can do.
Is it possible to replace the platter on your turntable if it got bent due to overexposure to heat (+poor materials)? Or will the rubber band + motor not match up? (I have a Lenco l-3867USB turntable)
hi, so i was planning on buying the audio-technica at-lp60 wireless and i got some questions do i have to use bluetooth speakers? is it worth the buy? im a beginner so i need some help
Hi Jarrett, so my parents bought me a vintage record player for Christmas, and I have really started to get really interested! I've been using some records on it and it has sounded fine, but I just bought a brand new Beatles album today and also used a couple other older records and for some reason it sounds awful and skipping all the time. I've tried gently wiping the dust away around the needle and the records with a q tip, and even a very soft paint brush. I am so frustrated because I can not figure out if I need to get a new stylus, or if it is just the record that is messed up? Do you have any tips?? Thanks so much!!!!!
Thanks for your comment! Well, the record could be dirty and the dirt is causing the needle to skip. It could also be warped but I couldn't really tell you without seeing it first hand. I would say that maybe it is dirty. Even brand new records can be quite dirty because the plants where they press them are also very dirty. The record pressing plants are quite old and so are the machines, so be sure to watch my video about how to clean your records! You can clean them pretty cheap and hopefully that will solve your problem!
I have a record where the first track keeps skipping(forward) and every other song sounds fine. It doesn't look warped, and its probably just dirty, but i cant really see anything that could cause this skipping(forward) to happen.

there is an new AT-LP120X since few months at the market. They call it an more compact weight , new direct drive torque motor , updated pre amp and new AT-VM95E cartridge, can you tell us more ?
@@EmmyDereest I got a free record player that is better than any modern turntable under $500. 80s gear is an amazing value, especially high-quality direct drives from Japan.
Hello Vinyl Eyezz, I bought a second handed turntable a while ago and i have been playing records on it. Something seemed off from the moment i first used it, because in order to get proper speed for my records my pitch control needs to be quite a bit above the middle. Is this something i should worry about?
That AT Turntable looks very much like a clone of a Technics SL-1200Mk2. I guess once a good design gets out there, might as well take advantage of it :)
I wonder why, 7" 45's in the UK (and possibly elsewhere) do not need the centre tool thingy when placed on the platter. My Denon TT which is 2nd hand came with the thingy missing. Fortunately I have no singles.
bit of a long question but it would really help if i got some advice, I just got my first record player and baught a set of new albums a few days ago. basically all of the records work fine except for one (rumours by fleetwood mac). it starts skipping when it gets to the second song up until the end of the record (from dreams until gold dust woman). It doesn't skip on the first song. any idea why this is the case. i have a Fenton RP175LW. thanks again.
+TheNintendoFanatic to play 78's you need a special wide needle. Anything around 3mil will work great. Look into the Grado 78E Cartridge, those are quality.
once again I have to thank u for answering my question. it was actually your video's that I came across a month bac that made me get into vinyl. For the pass 5 days I have been enjoying my new audio technica lp120. Although I've gotten vinyl records as gifts and have yet to go diggin for my own,I am excited!
To anyone out there: what pre-amp should I get? I am aware of the mm and the mc differences, but cannot seem to find one that will be suitable for under $45. The product reviews on Amazon are really discouraging. I am looking for a mm/mc pre-amp.
So what part is the "vinyl". I would always think the player was the vinyl, but, its actually called turntable. Then I thought it was the discs, but, I guess theyre called records. Is Vinyl the whole thing set up, or the sound, or what? Im curious.
Vinyl is another word for the records. The discs are made out of a type of plastic called "polyvinyl chloride" which is where the term "vinyl" came from.
+Vinyl Eyezz How can I see if the needle/cartridge is okay? Also the anti skating force is factory set I think but the tracking force is just one dial at the back of the counterweight?
Can you do a segment on why it’s even worth going the vinyl route? I’m not even being sarcastic. This seems complicated to set the arm and scary that you might mess up every time and scratch a $45 record.
for a newbie like me this is very informative, indeed.... thanx bro...

pretty pointless, since the oh so "praised" AT-PL120 he is using has a too weak, pretty much broken & non-functional antiskate.

Great video! One question. How long is the built in RCA cable?
+Sonny Chaudhry it's long enough to reach an amplifier nearby on the shelf, but it's not super long.
The Amp has to be directly next to or below. If not, you can buy an extension RCA cable and two couplers to connect the cables.

Are GPO PR100/200 Turntables any good?
