I want to learn Chinese so I don't have to read subtitles when watching a Chinese drama. This is by far the BEST course out there. I listen to Joyce every morning on my way to work. It's only been a couple of months and I am understanding more and more when I watch Chinese TV.😀

I spent HOURS looking for this, it is the BEST for making me feel I am progressing, as there is so much for the other teachers to organize, some very cute ones with cartoons are good but this teacher will support my duo lingo work, as I love movie learning too, thanks again to this team, I feel I understand how Chinese people think more, with grammar, their minds!

Yes, this course is very good! It's not just about parroting the phrases one doesn't fully understand, like in other courses - instead, it explains every little bit of the sentence what it means literally. It connects pronunciation with hanzi characters and pinyin transliteration, which is very helpful at the beginning of the learning process. Also the fonts are very readable (well, most of the time) and stripped off of all those unnecessary calligraphic squiggles, This really helps in getting the gist of the shape of every letter instead of getting distracted by all the unnecessary details. It also shows how to build sentences out of simple words. This is how language courses should look like :) 谢谢老師

I travel to Dalian the last December, I realize that the native people when met me the first time told me 你好, obviously no one ask me 你好吗 because I was a stranger for them and the people I met more times never ask it as well, instead I seen in the University the people rarely said 你好 to others so I ask and they told me it's not necessary, and in my native language Spanish I never say Hola to all the people just like How it's going? Or hey, but anyway I love to say 你好 to everyone because I know they dont know what to say just like me if they do it to me haha

Hi, I want to ask about wo ye hen hao, the tones are 3rd tones ('v'). There is rule if tone sounds 3-3, it changed to 2-3. If tones 3-3-3, it changed to 3-2-3. How about with tones 3-3-3-3? Which part of tone is changing when pronouncing?

    • @italianfrenchrocker

Of course, the latter refers to asking someone about their health status, while ni hao ma can also be used to inquire about someone's emotions or to greet them, similar to the meaning of ni hao. So, my question is, why do courses keep teaching "ni hao ma?" as if it was a normal way to greet people every day and an equivalent of "how are you?", when, in real life in China nobody really uses it that way? People say things like "Ni chi fan le ma?" (did you eat?) or "ni qu nar?" (where are you going?) but no one say "ni hao ma?". At least not to say hello.

    • @nexus8633

I wonder the same thing about "Genki desu ka" in Japanese, which is similarly translated to English as "how are you?" but is actually a specific inquiry about someone's health. It's like greeting someone in English with "Hi! Are you okay?" If someone said that to you, you'd wonder if you looked sick or something, right?
