I remember this story. These young men probably had no hate in their hearts and wanted just some peace on a day that was holy for them.
Pretty moving story. Enjoyed seeing it from your perspective.
I saw you had just posted yours. Very interesting how they ramped up the fighting in 1915
I remember hearing this story. I am so interested in these WW1 and WW2 places and stories you are documenting.
This story in particular is so fascinating. I feel like it could never happen today
@@MobileInstinct you are probably right.
I had forgotten there 8:05 was a Christmas truce and how it was observed. Thanks for the reminder. Loving your series in Belgium. Thanks for your great work, Chris
I remember when I was a young boy on the farm in the late 1950's. An old soldier from WW1 used to come out and pheasant hunt. The told me that he was part of the Christmas brake it the war. I remember he said some of people they were fighting against were from the same country. That before they parted they cried and wept.
Wouldn't you like to be a pepper, too?
Nice nostalgic shirt.
This event is featured in the Doctor Who episode, "Twice Upon a Time". Heartwarming - For a moment, at least.
Hey, Chris. Hope you’re doing well. I always learn something new from your videos. Been watching for years.
Sabaton have a beautiful song regarding this event. It’s called Christmas Truce.
Thank you for another great history video. Take care
Thank you, Chris! ❤
You need to Collab with the history underground he was just out there at the same place
This event really shows that the men fighting had no hatred for each other, the leaders of their countries did.
If you are still in the region and if you have the chance, a place to go to would be Oradour-sur-glane.
That place is insane. It's WWII, but of all the war related things I've seen in Europe (haven't been to the concentration camps) it made the most horrifying impression. The stories that can be told there, and what you can see there will blow your mind.
Wow! I've never heard of that place. Definitely going on my list
Oradour-sur-Glane is not in that region. It is in south-central France quite far away.
@@nedludd7622 Been there many times.A must see and never forget the horrors of war.Lived not far from there.
@@MobileInstinct if you ever decide to visit Auschwitz and do a video on it, you might wanna mentally prepare yourself beforehand first. because you won't feel the same afterwards.
2:46 ... looks like harvest time 😑
I was thinking the same thing!!! Lol!!!
I'd like to add that the Kiwis and Aussies. (ANZACS) gave their all to this campaign and suffered great losses, NZ lost almost a 3rd of their male population on those fields, at the going down of the sun we will remember them.
I'm half new zealander brought up in wellington, my great grandfather was amongst all of this and my mother still has all her grandfathers memories 😢

Kia Ora I was born in Wellington and grew up in Hawkes Bay, yes one thing I like doing is looking through OP shops and have found WW1 items bought back and also old letters written by troups be back to family Ive since given those to a historian who was going to track down their relatives to return them.
Brave guys .Great fighters and great men..
@barnyg6804 aloha👋 my new zealand family omg 😲 I love the hawks bay especially gizzy it's where my ex is from and she's the reason I left new zealand and yip my mother has so many photos of that war time I barely got to finish looking at it much loves to you here in Hawaii
Hi!!! Thats very interesting.I have never heard of this before. It must have been something very special. GOD rest their souls. Is that a Cleveland OHIO Baseball hat you are wearing???. I'm about 25 minutes away from Cleveland. Thanks for showing this to us. Great Video!!!...🦋
See Paul McCartney's "Pipes of Peace" video, inspired by this event. It's quite a well known event in Britain.
The American Civil War had something like that. They’d trade goods goods that each side couldn’t usually get.
My favorite subject. YT seems to have truncated my handle, which was Christmas, 1914.
Amazing that the birth of Christ can indeed bring peace even for a short time. ❤❤
He Chris were you there with JD with history underground. He just posted three days ago about this.
No but I just saw he posted a video there!
Belleau Wood.
There's an absolutely beautiful song about this but I can't remember the name of it!!!!
Goes to prove that citizens don’t wage wars but governments do. And those governments don’t physically fight nor do their kids. It’s always the civilians and their children who fight and die.
6:17 ANZAC 💕
i was in the army and at first you join to fight for good ole king n country, but your reasons quickly change. soon you realise your nothing but a number and thought of even less then that by your superiors, and it becomes about fighting for ya family and the people you are fighting along side. i'm sure both sides were looking across at each other thinking i wish this war was over, and for a few hours while kicking a ball it was.
I just hope on the other side both British and Germans are united in peace, despite the things they were both ordered and forced to do to each other during this dreadful war.
Hello! I don't want to sound cruel, or uncaring with what I say.
WW1 was started because a S. Slav nationalist assassinated the Archduke of Austria. I read that European leaders could not diplomatically resolve their differences. These should be grown-ups but they acted like toddlers.
Think of the young men who lost their lives before they had a chance to live their lives. Get married.
Have darling little children of their own.
My English cousin died in the battle of Ypres in Belgium. Why?
And when I hear that Christian soldiers of one army celebrated Christmas with their Christian brothers of the other army I am incredulous. How could they possibly have picked up arms again.
Thank you for your kind and respectful tribute.
I know British and German troops respected each other even though they were slaughtering each other. Robert Graves Goodbye To All That is well worth reading.
Just for one minute
Christ is King.
Canadians may have ruined the Christmas Truce a bit. They were mean.
It's not exactly impressive, it just shows the insanity of war and utter waste of life.
Governments and their lame politics is the entire problem in the world
Money and gread

Let’s not overblow this one thing. My great uncle was killed at Arras in 1916 having been in the trenches for a year. He hated the Germans. As each shell roared overhead his Bn (Argyll and Sutherland Hldrs) would cheer.
So in the first few months this small moment happened, but in the bigger picture the two wars, twice begun by Germans destroyed lives, families, orphaned thousands etc.
Think on that.
Just respect the falen not with rugby ball .it was a soccer ball football .!!
I am it was football not 🏉 I am respecting my great grandfather he was Scottish not American!!
Rugby tho is a far better game than football
Is it? Any game with a ball? Badminton
. No ball. I'm not joking when i go through my opp I I will have no nuts !!
It was football not American soccer !! Football. Round ball??
It's not American soccer it's just soccer the British named it that. Seventy percent of the world refers to it as soccer. The Brits just changed it to football over the years.
