      They were among the new guitar noise groups of the early 90s. My Bloody Valentine was the first band of this genre that I liked. It helped a lot being stoned on H. Increased the listening experience to a whole other level. Suddenly the noise turned into beautiful songs where the vocals and instruments blended into a single amazing object.

      Agreed. But I remember when it was released I was really mystified as to the choice of singles -- I was shocked they didn't release Lit Up or Lovelife as a single. Desire Lines and Hypocrite are nice songs but not as radio-friendly.

    • @lewzero
      @lewzero Рік тому +7

      Split was given to me soon after it's US release because my friend didn't like it one bit. Looking back this is what ended our friendship because I felt it was one of the best albums I'd ever heard. I couldn't understand her opinion and for some reason just wouldn't leave the subject alone. I wish I could explain to her how life changing hearing Split was, but I at least got to experience an incredible band even if it did mean losing a friend.

Ian Parton's songwriting has a lot in common with Emma Anderson's - he's from Brighton, where Emma lived for quite a while so I'd be surprised if they hadn't crossed paths - and the Lush vibe is certainly present on songs such as What D'you Say? We used to go see them any chance we got. I was at the 92 show in Boston where Miki had to walk off stage because of the "grunge movement" and frat boys that had no idea why they were there it was just "alternative" (we hate these people that just put a flannel on and told us green day are punk and gwen stefani is alternative). They were moshing around and one of them ended up on her pedal board, busted it. No more guitar. Emma kept them going as she could but eventually (love her) Miki takes a big swig off her beer, turns, tosses it over her shoulder into the pit, and walks off. This was not a weak minded band of timid girls at all, they rocked hard. Leaves Me Cold if you haven't tried that one yet. Chris Acland is a massively underrated drummer, RIP. Went to two of the reunion shows, they may have actually improved with time.

      You totally nailed it with hating the people that threw on a flannel and Green Day and Gwen Stefani thing. Those were also the posers that would make fun of the indie, punk or Goth kids, but then go to the concerts from the same genre.

    Thank you for this feature on Lush. They were one of my favorite bands growing up in the late 80s-90s and they were both blessed and cursed to make the scene when indie music was huge but the music press and pigeon-holing bands into specific scenes (britpop vs shoegaze vs grunge) was the norm. I feel Miki always had a punk edge to her- I remember her crowd surfing at Lolla. I spotted some footage from JBTVs interview with them from back in the day. The clashes with Emma and Chris' suicide were tragedies no band could recover from. So grateful for their reuniting in 2015-16 . Miki's childhood was so eventful, her autobiography is a must read. Thanks again for this video. I'd love to see more videos featuring lesser known bands before anything like another Hole/Courtney grunge vid. Please do Veruca Salt and Louise Post feature next.

    I'm in Melbourne, Australia and remember seeing them when I was still in high school and, being underage, I bought my brother a ticket and paid for my friend as well - because I wanted her company and he could drive us and helped us seem a little older (bless him!). I remember standing at the bar and Miki walked by, before the show, and being starstruck 😄 Also, at the end of the night, we found all this money on the floor that had fallen out of people's pockets. I can't believe how long ago that was! I still remember the tickets were $20, the strange things you remember!

    Saw them live 7-ish years ago and they sounded fantastic. Every song they played was like, ‘damn yeah another great tune.’ Some of their chordal writing is ahead of pretty much any other rock out there besides maybe my bloody valentine or stereolab. They just wrote fantastic music. It wasn’t about style with them, they wrote great music. Listen to the chorus on ‘deluxe,’ how the bass moves against the chords is unique, and frankly, genius.

Having headed down without even being certain of a ride home, just enjoyed the Jesus & Mary Chain set, ran into some college and hometown friends, traded some herbal delight for a space in the car for a ride home and knew during Lush's set so I could spend the remainder of that hot August day in the sun and still warm evening enjoying an epic concert - then still made my flight the next day to spend a year in Germany - so glad I did that!

    Huge Lush fan since 1989. Miki's memoir is fantastic, which I assume a lot of this info came from.
    Technical note: as a recording engineer, the plosives are kid of driving me nuts. I mean no disrespect at all, but I would suggest that you pick up a pop filter (not a foam windscreen thingie, but a legitimate pop filter) on your mic, possibly even speaking slightly off-axis on the mic so the plosives don't pop the capsule, and if you are able to do any processing, put a high-pass filter on the mic, cutting anything under 80 Hz or so out of the signal.
    Otherwise, great job. Thank you!

    This documentart popped up as a recommendation and I am so glad that I have seen it. It is sad about their music career because upon hearing Lush, I thought that they were still making music together, but no. I am still fairly new to the band, but the track Nothing Natural is heavenly that takes me new dimension. I would definitely do more research and listen to them. Even with the track, For Love is so good that it can appeal to that state if melancholy and nostalgia of a cossial of experiences yet to have been endured, but still feels familair. It is so sad go know the context about Chris and their other issues as a band, but I really do feel like they will get their flowers. They are an underrated band.
