@@josephscottadams39 In my opinion it's no contest, Tales of Arise is by far the better game. That said, i didn't like DQ11 much and i don't really get why people do. The characters are bland stereotypes and the story is very predictable. Tales of Arise does predictable thing very well in my opinion, not so much of the larger plot, but in the details, especially in the first half. After you reach the second area you realize that each area has it's own issues and you have no clue of what to expect. Especially the 3rd area really hit home for me on a meta level (i won't explain further to avoid spoilers). Also, i'm not really a fan of silent protagonists and the DQ humor never clicked with me. I finished 3 or 4 different DQ games, and i never really liked any of them, i won't buy any more in the future. So if you like DQ, take what i wrote with a grain of salt.
The game dropped a lot of frames in end game on my series s. But still so much better than on last gen. Tried the same battles on series x later and the thing doesn't even hitch.
This game is absolutely beautiful on the ps5 the way it flows. I was excited for this one and tried it on ps4 first, sadly to say it's the first time I ever got nauseous playing a game. This an odd one as both modes target 60fps.. So it's not surprise that quality mode is not as stable because otherwise why even have a performance mode? Anyway, there is a small advantage on the XSX due to it being slightly more powerful but the big advantage is VRR support
If you’re gonna comment on something at least know what hype talking about. The advantage is only the bandwidth being higher. That’s what’s used for higher resolution in games.
@@adrianhosein7698 if it was then the ps5 would be running essentially the same as the ps4 pro. And that's not the case right? If the game is loading much faster on next-gen consoles it tells us they are effectively using the new low level APIs for I/O and thus not back compat
@@dialmightyspartangod6717 the bandwidth of what... That sounds fairly incomplete for someone who is pretending to know what they are saying. XSX has several advantages (across gpu, cpu and memory) that can make a game potentially run a bit better than the ps5. @@elcourier no it doesn't, it tells us the ssds are doing their jobs, it makes no sense the ps5 beats and equals the series x in alot of games but this one is an issue? Clearly it's not being utilized.

Subtitles would be good for this video. I keep pausing to try to figure out what the narrator is saying. For example, at 2:05 "Technically, we're seeing (deployment or employment) of Unreal Engine 4 here. Although Arise looks distinct from most (eventually realized he said UE4) titles. The game has a (paintery or I guess painterly since that's a real word) appearance to it's textures."
First of all, Motoi Sakuraba's soundtrack works are as brilliant as ever. Personally I think Tales-series and Star Ocean-series are direct competitors, as they have similar presentation style and combat systems (although all SO-titles also have modern theme mixed in as well). They do have one thing in common: the composer Motoi Sakuraba works on both series. Sales-wise, Tales are much better than SO probably due to the publishing company and its accompanied anime-style opening (they do have a vocal song OP since its first title on SFC, that's one of its achievement back in the day). Gameplay-wise, I think SO is better due to fluidity of the combat. Now Tales of Arise is out, and the next Star Ocean is announced. I'm looking forward to compare the two again. At this point SO looks grim due to its bad frame rate shown in the their first video, but I hope they can address it before the game is released. Last but not least, Divine Spirit of Language remains my favorite battle theme of all time.
Hey, nice video ! I would suggest to look into your microphone situation, I found it too sibilant. Maybe upgrading your mics, changing the eq or treating your room would do the trick.
The dips from what I've seen and heard seem to be random and not always in the same areas. Could be a typical engine threading issue because there's no reason this game should be taxing the hardware setup.
This is Very true even on PC my Old Vega 64 GPU can do 4K max out at 58-60fps with decent GPU temps. and the Series X and PS5 GPU's are equivalent to a RTX 3060ti or 6700 XT which are far better and more energy efficient then the VEGA 64. So the Slow down can be engine related

These guys are very educated in the field of graphic design, gameplay design and overall performance. I'm learning a lot from you guys and I love this channel! Thank you!
Not sure why this game performs so badly on consoles. I have the PC version with modded settings well above console settings at 4k and the heaviest areas drop to around 80fps but most of the time it is at 100+fps with battles locked at 120fps. It definitely looks a lot better on PC with much better draw distance, shadows and LOD once modded and the skits were fixed to display at full resolution.
You say like keena bridge of the spirit is a top notch game 🤣🤣🤣🤣, it gets boring real soon but what to expect from a guy who said that a PS3 remastered game is next gen

"you won't mistake them for native 4k". Honestly, I might. I couldn't tell the difference in Psychonaut 2's 1440p or 4k mode. And that was on a 77'' tv, 5-6' away.
I'm so glad you guys said this. I was starting to questions myself as I was listening. Told my brother last night that playing Forza horizon 5 in 1440p on my series S on a 55" TV, I couldn't tell it wasn't 4k. The picture is so crisp.
@@dadaseyi when you play on a 55' there is no reason to ever play in graphics mode as the pixel density of having a smaller screen will retain sharpness. It's when going above 65' that 1440p doesn't quite cut it anymore.

Just played the demo on my Xbox Series S and it’s gorgeous. Runs very smoothly and the game is really good.
This is a great freaking game
@@lutzaby1997 cuz it wouldn't be legally binding an i wouldn't get benefits 😂😂😂
yeah, till you reach second act and then it turns to dogshit
Is the story good?
@@mitsuhed 8/10 till you reach the second part or second act of the game. then it goes to 4/10.
Great review, Olie!!
The game dropped a lot of frames in end game on my series s. But still so much better than on last gen. Tried the same battles on series x later and the thing doesn't even hitch.
Did you play in Performance mode or Graphics mode?
@@selohcin Performance mode all the way. Graphics mode looks sharper but is very inconsistent unless you have VRR (don't have it, lol).
Awesome video Oliver!!!
This game is absolutely beautiful on the ps5 the way it flows. I was excited for this one and tried it on ps4 first, sadly to say it's the first time I ever got nauseous playing a game. The speed of the colors and battle with the low framerate was killing me. Tried it on the ps5 and all that went away. Such a phenomenal title.
Better on series x ps5 is inferior
@@METALFACEDOOMXXXX I always find people like you funny. Someone says anything about their PS5 or X and you guys have to say something negative for whatever reason. If it makes you feel better then ok that's cool I guess.
@@METALFACEDOOMXXXX It's backcompat game so PS5 is limited with that one.
Xbox is the best box! 💚
@@adrianhosein7698 ps5 is just trash.
GTA TRILOGY ANALYSIS SOON? PLEASE
Yes all versions cause driving fast on One X drops graphics and Causes FPS Spikes which makes the target spike with it and you stay placed
Pretty please do a video about the gta trilogy remasters
Welcome back folks! Glad the channel is back! As far as this game, I really didn't care for any previous tales game I played other than Symphonia, but I can't deny this looks damn good. Just waiting on a sale or gamepass appearance.
I needed this video a couple of months back but hopefully we'll get more JRPGs on DF
I've heard that UA-cam are going to forcefully privatise the dislike ratio on videos.
This is a back compat game i think, if thats the case then PS5 will be limited on ram etc.
But pretending to know exactly what is causing the bottleneck on the performance on ps5 is just that : pretending.
@@elcourier no it doesn't, it tells us the ssds are doing their jobs, it makes no sense the ps5 beats and equals the series x in alot of games but this one is an issue? Clearly it's not being utilized.
22hrs in so far...great game, looks and plays amazing
Draw distance in this game on ps5 is horrendous, there is so much pop in it's crazy.
Even in ratchet and Clank Rift Apart there is a lot of po in on PS5. Just finished it and I said - WTF...Where are those next gen graphics everyone was saying?
@@sawomirkazimierczak6715 I genuinely cannot say I saw any pop in during R&C.
@@sawomirkazimierczak6715 Lmao, what the hell are you going on about LMAO!!!!
They finally gave the man a big budget, and my god did he delivered. Sakuraba was on fire on this game.
I have never played a Tales game before and bought it on a whim. I cant believe how much I am loving it.
I'm definitely ready to play this game. And coming from someone with both system the Xbox SX is a beast at all types of games.
They should implement the 40fps mode like in Ratched. The 4k mode would bw much more playable.
Yes! I hope more games implement the 40 fps mode. I'm actually enjoying it in Clatchet and Rank.
Simply put, this is game of the year material. In my case, the best game I have played in 2021.
Hey, nice video !
I would suggest to look into your microphone situation, I found it too sibilant. Maybe upgrading your mics, changing the eq or treating your room would do the trick.
YEEEEEESSS!! I’ve been waiting on this vid since the release of the game. So hype and happy.
Holy crap I was beginning to lose hope on digital foundry covering this lol
The dips from what I've seen and heard seem to be random and not always in the same areas. Could be a typical engine threading issue because there's no reason this game should be taxing the hardware setup.
This is Very true even on PC my Old Vega 64 GPU can do 4K max out at 58-60fps with decent GPU temps. and the Series X and PS5 GPU's are equivalent to a RTX 3060ti or 6700 XT which are far better and more energy efficient then the VEGA 64. So the Slow down can be engine related
Before I was a Digital Foundry subscriber, I thought this channel was shallow because they talk about video games on the subject of graphics. I see the error of my ways now! These guys are very educated in the field of graphic design, gameplay design and overall performance. I'm learning a lot from you guys and I love this channel! Thank you!
For sure, I love learning about game design and the technology of game engines from these guys.
Oliver is kicking ass right off the bat. I love it
Digital Foundry reviewed my Game of the Year 2021 "Tale of Arise"?!!!! Holy heaven!!!!
It's worth mentioning that the game also uses SSGI from what I noticed on the video.
series x have best spec and ps5 have best controller
I choosed series x because of better fps, quick resume, vrr
@Michael yes he does...just like me, he hasn't touched it since Jun due to no games, so it seems like he doesn't have it. 🤣
You say like keena bridge of the spirit is a top notch game 🤣🤣🤣🤣, it gets boring real soon but what to expect from a guy who said that a PS3 remastered game is next gen
@Michael Deathloop with get a definite Ultra version on Gamepass next year and Kena is also timed exclusive and will perform better and cheaper when the XSX version is out.. No rush in wasting unneeded money on them when I have bangers after bangers to play on XSX and GP.
Massive Win for Xbox Series X ! Again and Again and Again 😈😏
PS5: 8:00
XBOX: 8:14

@@savenyx3193 Xbox still better + VRR 😏
I gave up hope for this video! Glad to see it!
"you won't mistake them for native 4k". Honestly, I might. I couldn't tell the difference in Psychonaut 2's 1440p or 4k mode. And that was on a 77'' tv, 5-6' away.
I was playing FF7 Intergrade and I couldnt tell at all either between the resolutions of performance and graphics
@@oppa1319 lol. Daaaaaang. Roasted.
@@dadaseyi Not A roast lol, just an explanation.
This took forever, I literally thought I wouldn't happen
I was genuinely interested when I misread the title as Tales Of Arse!!!
Nice, I thought this game wouldn't get a video at this point but glad to see I was wrong. Great video as always!
I love these comparisons.
All they needed to do was make resolution graphics mode have dynamic res and it would bounce between 1620-2160p as needed to maintain 60fps
I've been waiting for this video
Those beginning battles seem so.... tame compared to the end-game screenfilling attacks
Series S is a robbery, people would be better of buying an Xbox One X and wait to get a Series X or PS5. Series S is already struggling in 1st year of the gen and there's still years to come before next gen, it will really start to die out when those AAA current gen titles start to come
When are You guys releasing the tech breakdown for call of duty vanguard?
Great dive into this Oliver, you are making a fan out of me with your breakdowns. You seem to be able to hit the sweet spot of non-bias commentary and recognize that you aren't passing things on behalf of a feature a minority would have or a feature that you like over not. Keep up the good work and I look forward to more of your breakdowns.
I found out about the tales series via gampass with vesperia.
