I had the privilege to live in the enchanted place known as Xalapa as a high school exchange student in 1961. I was able to return in the 1970's related to my business activities in tourism. What I enjoyed most were the people, music, dance, food, coffee, pastries, conversation and chess en cafeteria Chedraui, the people, surrounding areas, Hacienda Consulapa, Coatepec, the people, long day trips or weekend getaways to Puebla, the Port City of Veracruz. Did I mention how much I enjoyed the people, music, dance, food, nearby adventures and people? Xalapa en mi corazon para siempre - un gringo convertido a jaorcho.
One of my most beloved cities in my State of Veracruz. I used to go there from the Port every single week for work, loved it! since their people are adorable and their food is amazing
My wife and I love Xalapa and Coapetec. Her father was born there and she has extended family here and in Puebla. I agree the central city is very walkable and the people are very friendly. Spanish is a prerequisite however as we didn’t speak English the entire time we were there. Coffee is very good and the archeological museum is first rate. I loved it and their baseball team is known as the Xalapenos which you have to support 😂
I have been watching your videos now for a couple of years. Always looking for a place low on expats and tourists and beautifully green. This place just might be the ticket. Thank you!
Hills, Hills, Hills! This wasn't really touched upon in the video, but there are a lot of very steep hills, especially in centro. If you are older or have mobility issues, this will not be the ideal city for you. Very correct to say you won't really find too many English speakers here ( a plus, in my opinion). A very beautiful city, with kind people, and delicious coffee!
I have say that this is a very beautiful and lush looking area. Scenery is important for me as is a great cup of coffee. I will need to look further into living here. Thank you for sharing another wonderful location in beautiful Mexico.

I'm going to add Xalapa to my list of places to retire to. I'm Filipino-Canadian.
Keep in mind xalapa has a very hospitable charm to it but it’s very mountainous it’s murder on your knees lol it’s fine if you are in good health but if you struggle with mobility that’s something to keep in mind
Xalapa is a dream, I hope to make it come true! 😭 Mi novia es Tijuanense y su familia son Jaliscienses, so Mexico will be apart of our future forsure. I am dreaming of Vera, Camp, Yuca, o Oax! Ojala, Feliz año nuevo para todos 🎉!!!
If US citizens get scared by the media coverage of Mexico, take a look at the world peace index rankings and see where the “safe” US is ranked. Mexican people are kind, giving, friendly people. Don’t judge by what you see on the trusty Web🙄
@@GPosner8 yes very peaceful. Just look at Culiacán. Very majestic. Also the narcos demanding a fee so they can let my father sell his aguacates and not kill him and his wife. It's peaceful for the gringos that don't go looking for trouble.
Another absolutely wonderful and professionally done video. I would love to see a video on the top things to do in some of these cities/states as far as entertainment. I, for one, like watching sports, basketball in particular. Would be great to kniw about sports teams, events, etc. Also, would be great to hear about universities that have regular events including sports, theater, etc. Just my two cents!
Beautiful! I only got to see a little. Will go back and explore more. Would love to see a video on best places to live in Port of veracruz and Boca del rio
I visited the museo de anthropology. Very nice! Would like to go back and see more of this city. Can you do a review of puerto de veracruz and Boca del Rio?
Except for the hills, this might be the perfect retirement location for me. So far, it's sounding better than any other place in Mexico and I have been looking for two years. I do have a mobility impairment, but I'm thinking as long as I live near a park and can get out there and walk with my walker every morning, I'll be okay. I was also considering getting around my mobilty issues by buying a tricycle or an outdoor elliptical to get around. Anyhow my husband comes from Atlanta, Georgia. I come from coastal Connecticut and we're looking for a climate in the middle, at an elevation not too high because I also have COPD. CDMX and San Miguel de Allende are elevations too high for me. Xalapa sounds lush and green, not too hot or cold, but still less than 2 hours from the beach on the weekends. The rents you quoted were cheap AF, compared to Playacar or Vallarta. OMG! I'm doing a happy dance! I have to visit for a month Summer 2025. That will be the test.
Hello Crystal, I’m form Xalapa but I been living in Wisconsin for 30 years, so I know what a cold weather is, if you go to Xalapa you’ll be surprised how clean and beautiful the city is, but in your worries are the hills you can co to a close city called Coatepec which it’s a Pueblo Mágico and it’s 15 minutes away from Xalapa and close the the cloud mountains, lasts of green and it’s called the capita of coffee, hope you can go there and have fun.
Thank you for another wonderful video I'm adding this to my list of places I would like to go to. I would love something like this but a little warmer, any suggestions? I can handle up to 85 or 90°
Lack of fellow gringos? Adding it to my list of good cities. That is the specific reason I have been in Guatemala City for 3 years. Too many of us (absolutely including NGO workers) tends to add more negatives than positives.
I love your Mexico videos they are so thorough and entertaining! Could you tell me, do you have a colonial town or city you could recommend that is service dog friendly in that the locals would be comfortable with me and my service dog at my side? I am fluent in Spanish.
Thanks! most Mexican cities are pet friendly. However, it's not like north of the border. Service dogs don't have the same protections in Mexico and won't be allowed everywhere just because they are a service dog. In many cases your service dog may be allowed, but businesses are not obligated to allow it.
I currently live in CDMX, I’ve also stayed in Oaxaca. I am looking to move to a city with great nature in Mexico that’s not super touristy but also isn’t heavily isolated. I loved Oaxaca for dating more indigenous looking Mexican women but I’m looking for somewhere that also has natural water. Could be a beach or can be another nice body of water. Thank you for any help you can provide!
@@jackietrueblood5916 Near downtown there’s a an area called Los Lagos (The lakes) with 3 man made lakes that extend for about a mile long. This is a very popular hang out spot for families.

How is the air quality of Xalapa? Is it polluted? After living in Mexico for years, I was surprised to learn how polluted Puebla is. Also how is the humidity? I did hear that Xalapa is very humid & can damage your things. Is that true?
@@mitraamini3828 it is not polluted, fortunately Xalapa is not located in a valley and the topography of the region allows Gulf of Mexico currents to clean the air, plus it rains a lot during most time of year. Very different than CDMX and Puebla.
Hello, I’m from Xalapa and I can assure you the humidity it’s not bad, because it’s not hot, like from November to January it’s a lot of fog and light rain, I bet if you go you will be surprised how nice it’s, I’m living in Milwaukee and here it’s humid, I think sometimes you will feel the city cold.
I lived in Xalapa for 4 years and while I'd say living there with a wheelchair will be a BIG challenge. Most of the city is very hilly and the sidewalks are very narrow -- some of them even have stairs built in. Generally, it's not very wheelchair friendly. You might do better in Coatepec, a smaller town about 15 minutes outside of Xalapa. It's much more flat (and still very beautiful)
