Classic TV Theme: Hunter (Stereo)

- 'Works for me.' That was Sgt Rick Hunter's catchphrase and it helped Fred Dryer and Stepfanie Kramer launch one of Stephen J Cannell's most successful cop shows. Kramer wasn't there for all seven years of 'Hunter' (1984); she left after season six to pursue a musical career. And she wasn't easy to replace. The first new partner was killed off after 13 episodes; her replacement filled out the rest of the show's final season. Years later there were several revival movies, and Kramer came back; a 2003 sequel series vanished after three episodes. The 'Hunter' theme is by Cannell regulars Mike Post and Pete Carpenter.

Stephen J. Cannell, with a Mike Post theme, and a football player turned actor. Can’t get more 80s than that.

It works for me 😊
Loved this & TJ Hooker
Great Saturday show. I'm old enough to remember Saturday actually being a good night for primetime TV.
This was the most hardcore 80's cop show they ever aired lol, man what a time it was!!!!
"Works for me." - Det. Sgt Rick Hunter

One of NBC’s best hits! I remember seeing it every Saturday night!
yep 10pm
Me too.
Favorite cop show, his "Works for Me" tag line joined Michael Conrad HSB infamous "Hey, let's be safe out there"
*careful out there.
I love HUNTER.. I grew up watching this show Saturday nights on NBC, and in reruns on TBS SuperStation when I was in high-school, even had the complete series on DVD.
Awesome show😊
Loved how you could watch Hunters hair line creep farther back every season.
His hairline couldn't keep up with his success.
saturday nights at my grandmothers watching hunter nbc's st lineup was epic
Mike Post also composed the theme to Doogie Howser and at 1:45 you can hear a little of that whimsy Doogie sound.
Yeah! 😀
This was my favorite TV show back in the day when I was a kid in 80
In response to another post, actually Hunter wasn't on Saturday to begin with - it was on Friday night against Dallas. And let's not forget how popular Dallas was back then. Not to mention it was too violent.
Those two factors nearly got the show cancelled after one season until Stephen Cannell persuaded Brandon Tartikoff to give it a bit more time. Tartikoff agreed and pulled it from the schedule to give it a better timeslot. 2 months later, it aired on Saturday nights instead.
The 2nd season saw Roy Huggins at the helm, and he of course started the success it had.
And the rest was tv history
Hunter and Miami Vice were both on Fridays. Hunter was almost cancelled after one season. The show moving to Saturdays for season two helped. Season 3 is really when "Hunter" came into its own.
That one's true, HUNTER returned after a two-month hiatus.. the show moved to Saturday nights at 10:00/9:00 Central, and viewership slowly started to rise. The first season finished in 65th place.
The end titles for seasons 1-3 had the regular "Cannell" touch. Show a brief video for about a couple of seconds, freeze-frame and then flash 1-3 sets of credits. CHiPs had started that trend, technically.
Season 2 had the best intro!!!
Favorite intro season 3❤❤❤
That kick ass Season 6 theme! My personal favorite!
Hunter started off as being inspired by the Dirty Harry sequel, "The Enforcer", where Clint Eastwood had Tyne Daly as his female partner. Beginning with Season 2, the tone changed and the story style was more like an 80's version of The Rockford Files.
Seasons 1-4 were the most popular years of the series, but even though Kramer isn't in the final season, there are episodes in Season 7 that I like a lot: "All That Glitters", "Acapulco Holiday", "Ex Mark's The Spot" and "The Reporter". I also like how that last year's theme seems to be about bereavement in a way: Hunter's moved on from McCall, still hanging in there at his job, staying interested in what's happening. Life is like that.
That's thanks to former Rockford Files EP Roy Huggins.
It was also inspired by the release of the fourth Dirty Harry film, "Sudden Impact," and a parody comedy series, "Sledge Hammer!"
@@drummingdanny84 and McCall's personality has more in common with Rita Moreno as Rita Capkovic in The Rockford Files than Tyne Daly in The Enforcer.
@@AldenRDavis no, it was based on just "The Enforcer" - that was from an old interview Fred Dryer did for Playboy. "Sledge Hammer" was likely inspired by Dirty Harry, Hunter and a lot of cop film and TV show cliches.
My favorite intro: Season 4, 1987-1988.
Mine too.
My favorite season: September 23, 1987--May 7, 1988
@@drummingdanny84 Mine too.
All these themes work for me 😉
Another great Post / Carpenter compostion. Thanks.
Enjoyed this growing up happy days ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Missed the 5 season theme with Hunter.
Thank you
She always reminds of Tanya Roberts
The Season 3 opening has Stepfanie (as McCall) singing as the music credit comes up.
Pretty funny considering that is how she quit Hunter for.
I'd like to see Fred dryer is Sci fi TV shows and or movies. Like picard
A WWOR classic. It ran on NBC but it was WWOR that made this show popular more than the lame 60s excuse for "Trek", which WPIX shoved down our throats after its original run on CBS.
Fantastic
My favorite TV show was this this show and Air airwolf all shows that was NBC 4 in Los Angeles back in in 80 but air wolf was on CBS 2
One of it's few redeeming features Stephanie Kramer being the other one
👍
You left out the Season 5 intro theme and credits.
I didn't remember Hunter appearing in uniform, but it''s neat to learn that he was a Sergeant II 🙂

I'm afraid you left out one intro. Had a bit of a rock beat to it.
Didn't Hunter changed partners!
In the last season, yes. He had 2 different partners. Darlene Fluegel was his first new one as Joanne Molenski. When Darlene Fluegel clashed with the producers and Fred Dryer over creative differences, she was sacked and in came Lauren Lane in this role as Chris Novak, which preceded her role a couple of years before her time on The Nanny.

@@megamanj2004X Darlene isn't clashing with anyone these days.
@@user-vc1oz9rv6vThat’s because she passed away a few years ago.
