- Every year me and my friends Espen Helland, Oddbjørn Austevik, Gunnar Dresler and Truls pack our gear for extreme winter expedition to Dovre. Our goal is to photograph the muskoxen in these harsh and cold contitions.
When the temperature creeps down to minus 26 degrees it is important to plan and pack essential gear for this kind of adventure. So in this video I talk about what kind of gear I take with me. All from clothing to camera equipment.

Meeting after a long time.. I don't know you remember me or not.. I am Kalpak.. I drew your sketch.
And congrats for 44K subs sir!!...
Hello sir! Off caurse I remember you. How are you ?
You should get battery heated gloves. They works way better than warm patches. There are also battery heated socks available . It can works with power bank.
Thank for sharing friend
Thank you!
I have a pair of thin, yet battery heated liner gloves from Pelerin that I put inside my flip mittens! 3 settings of 7, 5 or 3 hours for the length of the battery! I think Ewool have some also! Just charge them up the night before! Looking forward to your new videos Trond!
Thats a great tip as well. Thank you :)
You are very brave well done
Looking forward to your next trip
Have a great time up there my friend. Looking forward to your video.
Thanks buddy! I have allready been there now. So firs episode will release next saturday :)
Tons of good wishes from india. Have a safe journey my friend.
Thank you so much for your kind wishes.
Thank you
Great insight into your work. Thank you!
Thank you!
Have a nice trip! Do you also use a screen recorder? Or how do you get photo and video from the same action, or are you switching back and forth photo and video mode? Cheers!
Thanks! I sometimes use a screenrecorder. But in -26 I do not dare to use it. So I switch between.
Great video, I used very similar gear when out shooting in northern Alberta Canada, we would be in equally cold weather.
Thanks! :)
I finally got a Z9. I just spent hours going through the menus. Tomorrow I'll do a small test.
Thants awesome! Congrats. It is a fantastic camera. Enjoy!
Very helpful video! Which GoPro are you using?
Thank you! I use gopro hero 10. But not that good in the cold. So I might chance for a DJI action camera insted.
Wish I can go to Dovre one day and photograph the muskoxe aswell! absolutely beautiful animals, hands and feets are my nemisis in cold weather ! 😅 congratz on the 600, youtube going well I see 😉😅 well deserved, keep safe out there!
It is an awesome place indeed :) Thank you, that lense is fantastic :)
Hi Trond, great video and thank you for sharing! I just found your channel and binging my way through your videos!
Do you do anything to try and keep the camera warmer inside the bag or the batteries? (ie. carry a battery inside your sweater pocket or use heat pads by the camera)
Great video.. one of my plans is to go to dovre next season in winter time, been there in fall time.. i was nervous about the gear to bring as i only been in -10 temp before. What months is good for the winter shoots of the musk ox? What kind of clothing for legs would you bring? Never used snowshoes before any you can recommend that can handle a 95kg guy + load?
Thank you! If you are going up there in the winter I will highly recommend to use a guide. My friend Even knows the mountains and takes really good care of you in the harsh condition. You can mail him here: moskusguiden@gmail.com. And read more about his service here: www.moskusguiden.no
-26 grader ja. Det biter godt i nesen :D
Ser frem til neste video fra selve Dovre med Moskus'en :)
Uten tvil....så mye at jg fikk bihulebetendelse når jeg kom tilbake 🙈
Great Video. What do you do when you return indoors after shooting outside in cold weather to protect your camera gear from moisture? I've heard that placing the camera inside a plastic bag in your bag for a few hours is helpful until it gets to room temperature.
Hello! Great question. I never use that plastic bag advice before. But what I do is to take out my battery and memory card out in the cold. And then leave my camera and lense in the bag in a room with lower temperature for some hours. And then put the backpack in a room with around 23 degrees. And leave it for many hours before I take it out. This way it will declimatize
Maybe to put a dehumidifier bag in the backpack when comming indoor would could help. (Can be bought in Manu plages where they sell stuff for cars)
What a well timed video! I recently got back from Scotland where it was at least -6 which is something I'm very much not used to! I think you are crazy to go out in such conditions but definately power to you! Then you might melt in my favourite summer conditions😂! I definately need to improve my winter gear though!
Haha....I think I would. Not much of a summer condition guy 😅
@@trondwestby I love summer ☀️ but I'm just about able to cope with the UK winter these days 😆
That's probably your summer 🥵
I love summer as well, but not 30 degrees 😂 @@JoeMaranophotography
@trondwestby5264 21 is great, 24 is perfect 26 is starting to get warm, 30 is I'm sweating a bit and 35 and over if I'm not used to it is too hot. That said I survived 6 months of 55 degrees during this lifetime so yeah I feel whatever you are used to is your go to. Genuinely there were people in Scotland in shorts in January! I don't wear shorts until June in Norfolk in England! 😆
Dear Trond,
did you ever have battery issues in extreme cold conditions? Since I had problems once years ago I now power my Z6II by a powerbank I keep under the jacket.
Actually I have been impressed by the batteries so far. Especially the Z9. But the Z6 II battery last surprisingly long. Are your battery old or new?
Which model is the Mountain equipment down jacket are you use ? K7 JACKET ? Ronny //
I've found that hiking boots do not keep my feet warm once I've gotten to my destination and am still, but boots that keep my feet warm when I'm still are big and clumsy and not great for hiking long distances. I'm wondering what you do to keep your feet warm.
do you have the specific Mountain Equipment down jacket name please? looking for a good down jacket for a photo trip to the arctic.
Yes....I use mountain equipment k7. Thats the warmest.
@@trondwestby cheers for the quick reply
-26 grados es mucho frio jajajaj
I am coming from the UK to stay on a farm near Selbu which is near Trondheim how close are the Must Ox from there. I know it’s going to very cold.
Thanks
Maybe around 2-3 hours with car.
Hi which socks do you wear.i always get cold feet when out wellington s.
I wear wool socks, thin one. Because my boots are good. And I do not need thick ones.
What pants are you using?
I use a regular outdoor pants from Norønna. It is a Norwegian brand. And when I arrive to the destination I put on a skiing pants from Bergans.
@@trondwestby thank you for sharing.
With all this gear how much does your backpack weigh?
25 below is serious business don’t try this at home kids ❌💀
