I’m starting to get worrying flashbacks to 2016 when we looked poor and had a painfully laboured group stage, eventually finding ourselves with a last 16 match against Iceland, which everyone naively assumed we’d just stroll through… but the writing was already on the wall.

If there was better options we would never have gone for managers like Hodgson or Big Sam in the first place! Bellingham or Foden or 45 each but not together…Kane off and the younger ones on to give us flare and pace…making the wrong selections and subs….wouldnt be England otherwise…!!
England need Foden as the number 10, and the only solution to that is Bellingham in the 8. We blew away some teams in the WC with B as an 8, so why doesn't Southgate to at least try it, even mid match!

It makes perfect sense on paper. My worry is that Bellingham holds onto it too much in the build up to play that role these days but would still prefer that to Trent or Gallagher in the middle.
Until we put someone in the middle who can play one and two touch, move the opposition around and dictate the tempo, I don't think we'll get much out of Foden and others. Teams have too much time to plug the gaps that he can exploit.

Rices best position is the position trent/mainoo/gallagher are all playing. So it should be wharton to sit and rice to get up and down the pitch.

@tomadams94 not necessarily. My own personal opinion would be to rest Saka and try foden off the right and put Gordon on the left with Bellingham in the middle. England have already qualified. Time to play players in their best positions. I know ideally it wouldn't be fodens but Wharton and Gordon playing in their best positions needs to happen at some stage in this game or they won't play a minute in the tournament.
It's really not that hard. All they have to do is put Gordon on the left. Foden in 10. Bellingham a bit deeper.

This is what happens when the media focuses too much on one problem, Southgate just feels he has to solve that one. Everyone in the media jumped on Trent in the midfield and Southgate is now convinced that he was the only problem when there are several.

Gallagher may not excite fans but he's a far better fit for partnering Rice in Midfield than Trent and in his defence he's the player who is best at winning the ball back in the oppositions half. When you consider England have been giving up possession after going a goal ahead and reverting to playing deep he offers us respite from that.
Go back and watch some of the matches Ghallagher did later in europe and against top teams. His a huge level drop. He couldn’t get into any top pl team.

England frequently turn up to the Euros and World Cup looking lethargic and slow. It is just that they haven’t overly been like that in the last three tournaments that we seem to have forgotten. Look at Euro 92, WC 2010 in particular. Honestly when I saw them against Denmark it looked like they had all been drugged up. Lethargy and slowness is the England football team disease.

Simon Jordan has given a detailed plan of what to do. Southgate has not get a clue.
Pratgate has chosen Gallagher over Foden in midfield. Let that sink in.
And over Trent, Wharton, Mainoo, even Cole who could play there (as it's only Slovenia), Stones who could play there with Konsa in defence. Gallagher is a good lad, works hard, but doesn't have the quality to open any defences.
@@fearlessfishman Gallagher was Chelsea`s second best player last season after Palmer , he beats every one of those players last season on stats whether its short pass , medium pass or long pass , he beats them on progressive passes , interceptions , tackles , goals and assists etc per 90 minutes played , is he the answer to Englands problems ? no he is not but stop making out he`s worse than those you have mentioned , i will say he is a tackle away from a booking which is my only concern with him .

GK Pickford RB TAA/Trippier CB Stones CB Guehi LB Walker Or Tripper RW Saka 6 Rice 8 Bellingham 10 Foden LW Gordon St Kane. Or 8 Mainoo Bellingham 10 Foden on bench. Without Shaw no LB to put crosses in from that side so have someone who can get back and defend there like Walker who doesn't put crosses in anyway and have player on right side that can put crosses in. Ive just named 2 options for line ups better than Southgate as can many other people can do yet this guy is manager of England FFS
This may sound a bit odd, but i think the most fitting lineup that could get the best out of every player is : 4/4/2
Kane + Bellingham at the atttack
The midfield brings up Stone with Rice and puts Saka on the right and Foden or Palmar on the left.
Defense: i would employ Walker as a center back and play Arnold as a right back where he should be.
That’s not bad. Like you I’ve been clamoring to put Stones next to Rice (even as movement in phase of play) and hold Walker for protection/pace. Key is to get Foden back where he belongs.

What would Gallagher’s role be? I just don’t think he’s very good at all the key measures. He’s the typical ‘combative midfielder’ in a poor team. 50% of teams have one. He can’t play but he runs around snarling and throwing in aggressive tackles. He’s a completely negative player. English football loves this sort of player. That he’s out there currently is why England will never win an egg-cup. He looks like a great player to have in a poor team. His display yesterday v Slovenia (Slovenia) got him hooked at half time because he was being outmaneuvered and outpositioned and made to look like what he was, a Championship scrapper.
We are playing a team which concedes possession.... so why play 4 at the back ! ?... play 3 we don't need Trippier... and go for extra width and also play Palmer... Southgate won't and it will be mind numbing the same ole same.
Gallagher is a ball winner, which is something no other English player can do. Gallagher would free up Rice in my opinion. The problem lies with Bellingham and Foden; not sure the team can accommodate both as it compromises width. The team is crying out for Gordon on the left and Saka on the right, Kane and Foden up front, Rice and Gallagher in the middle with Gallagher holding, Walker Stones Guehi and Trippier defence and the short bloke in goal. Palmer/Bellingham can be swapped for Foden/Saka. If Kane is man marked out the game again, bring on Watkins if we need movement or Toney who can do both target man or runner.
Notvsure what Bellingham actually brings to the table...need help with that one as i can't put my finger on it

1. Gallagher played 30 games as the #10 for Chelsea and was useless... Chelsea's form improved when Palmer was moved to #10.
2. Rice was a £100m+ signing at #6, only for Arteta to realise Jorginho is a better #6.
3. Trent had 7 goal contributions in the league, and probably cost Liverpool 7 goals... He's not a tournament footballer and that's OK.
4. Kane played for a Spurs side that was better than 75% of the league and filled his boots, without being under pressure to beat the top four.
5. At City, Foden is more finisher (19 league goals) than creator (9 assists)... Rodri matched his assists, and KDB had 10 assists in half as many games.
Trents not a tournament footballer. Might want to tell the champions league organisers that. They keep letting him into finals 😂

Gallagher isn't playing 10 for England so a meaningless point, and he was Chelsea 2nd best player of the season behind Palmer and did a decent job in 8/10 role so once again incorrect on that point..But just to correct you further Chelsea's form did not improve when Palmer was moved to 10, it was when Pochettino decided to invert Cucurella from a RB to inverted RB/Mid..Nice try but no cigar !

Enzo had an operation after the Arsenal beating, and Pochettino replaced him Madueke (winger for a midfielder).
Madueke on the right moved Palmer to the #10, with Gallagher moving deeper to the pivot #8... Cucurella then supported Caicedo when Chelsea were in possession.
Jackson, Gusto both better than Gallagher last season, but Gallagher goodwill at Chelsea is off the charts for non-football reasons.
Not even bothered if we lose the game I just want to see a good game that is enjoyable and entertaining to watch.

If Southgate doesn’t bother to change the formation, Gallagher isn’t the answer. Southgate SHOULD be playing 4-3-3 and Trent would be perfectly fine there. As would Gallagher.
But dropping Trent is putting bandaid over a bullet hole if he’s going to continue with 4-2-3-1 and a double pivot. Doesn’t fix about 15 of their 16 problems.

What's worrying is that pretty much every pundit or joe public think play Rice holding with Bellingham and Foden in front with Eze or Gordon left but Southgate has a determination not to. Has he tried this in training and it's been a disaster? or is he just being stubborn to prove he's in charge?

Foden is no good on the left, move him inside and give him to create havoc - if he's not cutting it after an hour, bring on Palmer.
Trent hung out to dry here. No way he should have been put into this “experiment” at a major tournament. To make one change in the context of SO many failings against Denmark (and Serbia) in terms of personal performances, tactics and formation, smacks of a manager who doesn’t trust his other players, doesn’t really know what to do or isn’t brave enough to do it

While Trents performance in midfield was understandably poor because hes not a midfielder, his forward passing when facing play was one of englands more progressive factors against Denmark. Replacing him with Gallagher actually justs makes the team even more defensive on paper. Tiresome from Southgate.
He obviously doesn't trust Bellingham as an 8. Watching Jude taking 20 mins to get up after having a shot so he doesn't have to get back doesn't help.Old Rashford trick that one.
Not sure why Trippier has remained a constant and there is no talk of Walker moving to the left, with Trent taking the RB spot.
Also, I feel Warton/Mainoo would be a better partner for Rice and Eze coming in for Foden
