This just sums Southgate up, he has no idea what he's doing, no idea what his best team his, no idea what his players' best positions are. I've always been frustrated that we didn't know our starting 11. The game against France in the World Cup felt like the first time there was a solid starting 11. BUT we get annoyed when he picks the same players, and we get annoyed when he picks new players who haven't played together. To be fair to him, he has like 6 weeks a year with players and we want him to pick on form, in which case, he'd have a new squad every single international break. I do think it's time to change but can't understate how great the foundation Southgate's built in the national set up. But maybe now we need a ruthless winning manager (not sure we have that in England though)

He probably doesn't want to show all his cards yet so the opposition can be ill prepared when he finally drop Foden and bring in Gordon whose pace would be a problem to handle. When you are playing with 2 Central Mids the partner ship is everything. They need to instinctly know what to cover, what runs to make, where to be available and what moves to make to compliment each other. When you’ve got someone in their who not only doesn’t know the role but also hasn’t got that partnership your carrying a player in the most important part of the pitch. Trent cannot start in a midfield 2. He doesn’t do it at club level and doesn’t know the position. A RB stepping into space with 3 midfielders around him is just not the same thing. England are almost playing with 1 man less. Obviously Phillips shouldn’t be there but at least he knows the position and how to build that partnership. The failure of Southgate is the sticky with Phillips for so long despite the clear signs he needed someone else, leaving it last minute then throwing Trent in just because he can cross a ball.
The "experiment" started the day he turned up with no left footed defenders ... Its a compromise from that point forward. Shuffling his pack with countless players out of their best position. And he ended up with 11 right foot players finishing the game against Denmark. Astonishing
The only surprise, is that people are surprised. England have got a Championship manager, trying to win an International competition. It will end in tears once again, until a proper proven manager is made the manager of England.
We have had many of the best managers in the world, but have never had such a squad of talented players as those of the last 3 tournaments, so it is not always down to the wrong manager, but in this case, perhaps it is. One thing is certain, playing players out of position has never worked at international level, and that is down to the manager, not the players.
Southgate is the worst manager I've ever seen at this level and I've been saying it for 8 years! He managed to get a then decent Middlesborough team relegated before smarming his way into the FA set up.... Massively out of his depth he has no clue what he is doing.... The worst of it came towards the end where the players didn’t really seem to know whether they were pressing or trying to play for the drawer. There was also arguing on the pitch, which tells you everything you need to know. I also noticed a picture with Bellingham and Southgate leaving the pitch and the look on Bellingham’s face spoke 1000 words!
I called it months ago....there's only a slim chance England will go far in this tournament because EVERY time they come up against a decent side, they crumble. Saying its brave to put Trent as a midfielder isn't the same as saying its a good idea. The fact is Trent playing there has not worked, he's not a midfielder, not technically good enough when on the ball under pressure. He's good when he's got time to pick out a pass when he has time to do so but in that central midfield position he has been found wanting and is a liability. That's not his fault, the blame lies solely at the person playing him in that position
My biggest issue isn't the fact that he tried Trent in that position, it could have been a good move with his passing capabilities. But the fact that he played him there again when it was clear and obvious that he isn't capable after the first game, that is unforgivable. The confidence of these lads now will be at an all-time low going into the knock phase if they don't rip Slovenia to pieces, a standard win won't suffice.
Trent VASTLY outperformed Gallagher, who replaced him. It has nothing to do with Trent or midfielders v right backs. Southgate set the team up with Foden, Bellingham, and Kane all occupying the same exact space in midfield and NO LEFT SIDE PRESENCE. Trent is a passer of the ball. There are no runners to pass to. The boys are picking the ball up in midfield and staring out 5 of their mates all 3 yards from them. You don't have any width in the team and it's so easy to just smother England in possession because they have no space to move the ball into.
I would bring foden right of midfield Bowen out wide right, roaming roll for Bellingham then second half look at may be Gordon being introduced with saka if needed

So let's take a look at his managerial pedigree ..... 2005-2006 Middlesbrough finish 14th 2006 - Becomes Middlesbrough Manager (despite not having his coaching qualification) 2006-2007 - Middlesbrough finish 12th 2007-2008 - Middlesbrough finish 13th 2008-2009 - Middlesbrough Relegated in 19th. 2009 - Southgate Sacked. 4 Years out of Football 2013 - 2016 - Coach of England U-21 2015 - Finished bottom of group and knocked out of U21 Euros. So.... 3 years in Prem Management where he was sacked for relegating Middlesbrough. 4 years out. Then 3 years not doing much with the U21 side. Are we honestly surprised that he looks clueless????? He's not qualified. This isn't Ancelotti we're talking about here. This isn't Pep. He never earned any stripes as a top class manager. He's totally unproven and I think it shows every time England play. I would literally prefer Sam Allardyce, because Sam can at least get average players to put a shift in.
The "experiment" clearly didn't work, but Southgate chose to restart the same 11, to continue the experiment and presumably to give the boys a chance to show they can play after all. The first sign of madness, is repeating the same thing and expecting a different result. How long as Phillips been gone? Ahhh, Gareth, poor you are you missing him? Kane looked like he was out for a Sunday stroll. He made ONE, JUST ONE, forward effective pass to Saka and then just slowly jogged towards the goal, ensuring that there was no one there to receive the ball back. He's clearly pissed about the setup, or perhaps he's pining for Phillips as well.
I don't want to bash a manager who has taken us to a semi-final and a final in the last few tournaments. I am however frustrated at Southgate for thinking that a midfield screen of Declan Rice (box to box, but plays as an 8 for Arteta) and Trent Alexander Arnold (a fullback who inverts in certain circumstances for Liverpool) ... so Rice and TAA are the midfield that we want to go up against Portugal, Spain, France or Germany later in the tournament? So we honestly think Vitinha, Bruno Fernandes and Palhinha won't run rings around us? Or Kroos and Andrich won't make mincemeat? Or Rabiot and Kante? For goodness sakes.... this is a side that might limp through the group stages, might get lucky in the last 16. But unless we actually start picking MIDFIELDERS, we will get beaten by players who will be licking their lips against this stuff.

When he called up Mainoo I was impressed and thought ah yes hes seen the missing piece and grown the balls to pick him regardless of age and experience.. Then he goes and plays someone out of position there instead.

I think I've solved it. Three at the back Guehi, Stones, Walker. Wing backs Gordon, Saka/Trent. CM Rice flanked by Bellingham and Foden. Up front Kane with Watkins/Bowen running off him.
3 at the back. Solves the Shaw issue. Walker, Stones, Guehi. Gordon LWB runs all day, Trent RWB in his natural position. Jude, Rice, Mainoo CM, Foden behind Kane. He won't though.
Everyone has different ideas about what team and tactics Southgate should pick, and with so much new talent available, it's natural to try different combinations. Yet, why he's not giving chances to Gordon, Palmer, and Wharton seems strange to me.

I just saw a headline Sky, "Is this the end of the Alexander-Arnold midfield experiment?". EXPERIMENT? In a major tournament. This just sums Southgate up, he has no idea what he's doing, no idea what his best team his, no idea what his players' best positions are. He's been in the job for over 7 years and still doesn't know this, how do people defend him?
I've always been frustrated that we didn't know our starting 11. The game against France in the World Cup felt like the first time there was a solid starting 11. BUT we get annoyed when he picks the same players, and we get annoyed when he picks new players who haven't played together. To be fair to him, he has like 6 weeks a year with players and we want him to pick on form, in which case, he'd have a new squad every single international break.
I do think it's time to change but can't understate how great the foundation Southgate's built in the national set up. But maybe now we need a ruthless winning manager (not sure we have that in England though)

When you are playing with 2 Central Mids the partner ship is everything. They need to instinctly know what to cover, what runs to make, where to be available and what moves to make to compliment each other. When you’ve got someone in their who not only doesn’t know the role but also hasn’t got that partnership your carrying a player in the most important part of the pitch.
Trent cannot start in a midfield 2. He doesn’t do it at club level and doesn’t know the position. A RB stepping into space with 3 midfielders around him is just not the same thing. England are almost playing with 1 man less. Obviously Phillips shouldn’t be there but at least he knows the position and how to build that partnership. The failure of Southgate is the sticky with Phillips for so long despite the clear signs he needed someone else, leaving it last minute then throwing Trent in just because he can cross a ball.
The "experiment" started the day he turned up with no left footed defenders ... Its a compromise from that point forward. Shuffling his pack with countless players out of their best position. And he ended up with 11 right foot players finishing the game against Denmark.

We have had many of the best managers in the world, but have never had such a squad of talented players as those of the last 3 tournaments, so it is not always down to the wrong manager, but in this case, perhaps it is. One thing is certain, playing players out of position has never worked at international level, and that is down to the manager, not the players.

The worst of it came towards the end where the players didn’t really seem to know whether they were pressing or trying to play for the drawer. There was also arguing on the pitch, which tells you everything you need to know.
I also noticed a picture with Bellingham and Southgate leaving the pitch and the look on Bellingham’s face spoke 1000 words!
I called it months ago....there's only a slim chance England will go far in this tournament because EVERY time they come up against a decent side, they crumble. Saka taken off was insanity. He was the only person on the pitch that looked dangerous for England. Worst match I've ever seen for England. Shocking. Playing around with the ball from the back, giving the ball away. Not harassing anyone at the front. Truly awful.

Saying its brave to put Trent as a midfielder isn't the same as saying its a good idea. The fact is Trent playing there has not worked, he's not a midfielder, not technically good enough when on the ball under pressure. He's good when he's got time to pick out a pass when he has time to do so but in that central midfield position he has been found wanting and is a liability. That's not his fault, the blame lies solely at the person playing him in that position
My biggest issue isn't the fact that he tried Trent in that position, it could have been a good move with his passing capabilities. But the fact that he played him there again when it was clear and obvious that he isn't capable after the first game, that is unforgivable. The confidence of these lads now will be at an all-time low going into the knock phase if they don't rip Slovenia to pieces, a standard win won't suffice.
Everyone keeps blaming TAA but our best spell in both matches came when he was on the pitch and there was no improvement after he was subbed.
Trent VASTLY outperformed Gallagher, who replaced him. It has nothing to do with Trent or midfielders v right backs. Southgate set the team up with Foden, Bellingham, and Kane all occupying the same exact space in midfield and NO LEFT SIDE PRESENCE. Trent is a passer of the ball. There are no runners to pass to. The boys are picking the ball up in midfield and staring out 5 of their mates all 3 yards from them. You don't have any width in the team and it's so easy to just smother England in possession because they have no space to move the ball into.
Why can't he experiment with Wharton in that midfield?

Kane looked like he was out for a Sunday stroll. He made ONE, JUST ONE, forward effective pass to Saka and then just slowly jogged towards the goal, ensuring that there was no one there to receive the ball back. He's clearly pissed about the setup, or perhaps he's pining for Phillips as well.
I don't want to bash a manager who has taken us to a semi-final and a final in the last few tournaments. I am however frustrated at Southgate for thinking that a midfield screen of Declan Rice (box to box, but plays as an 8 for Arteta) and Trent Alexander Arnold (a fullback who inverts in certain circumstances for Liverpool) ... so Rice and TAA are the midfield that we want to go up against Portugal, Spain, France or Germany later in the tournament? So we honestly think Vitinha, Bruno Fernandes and Palhinha won't run rings around us? Or Kroos and Andrich won't make mincemeat? Or Rabiot and Kante? For goodness sakes.... this is a side that might limp through the group stages, might get lucky in the last 16. But unless we actually start picking MIDFIELDERS, we will get beaten by players who will be licking their lips against this stuff.

I think I've solved it. Three at the back Guehi, Stones, Walker. Wing backs Gordon, Saka/Trent. CM Rice flanked by Bellingham and Foden. Up front Kane with Watkins/Bowen running off him.

Totally agree i mean who is so arrogant to think they can go into a tournament and experiment with a new midfield especially when you consider we had 2 friendlies before and he never tried Rice and Trent together at all in those matches..Reeks of cowboy coaching because you have come to a tournament not knowing who your midfield is.

The good news? Bellingham can play just about every midfield position without a major drop in his contribution to the team. Doing better than Foden did so far, shouldn’t be a problem…. Alternatively he could play Gordon on the left and Bellingham next to Rice,, or? For some reason I can’t help to think that the highly sought after manager doesn’t have a clue which option would be in the best interest of his team’s success…. Bellingham on the left and Gallagher next to Rice? Benching Foden, Bellingham at 10, Gordon on the left and Gallagher next to Rice? The fact that Southgate seems to have no clue how to balance his midfield is astonishing to say the least.. To make poor Gareth’s life even more complicated captain Harry is playing far from his best football…. One could even question if ‘Manager Gazza’s eleven would be stronger with Watkins? My best guess, we’ll never know! Southgate’s obviously lacks cojones and even if dear Gareth would be a late bloomer still waiting for his balls to finally decent, benching his captain? Who knows maybe Southgate has the brilliant idea to experiment with Trent or Walker at left back? Just because he doesn’t dare to bench either one…

Some may say the sign of a good team is playing poorly and still grinding out results - I’d agree, but the issue with England is whether they’ll have a good performance at all.

Kalvin Phillips has been out of form and off the field for nearly 2 years and Southgate has yet to figure out his replacement or figure out how to play a system that doesn’t require a player like Kalvin Philips in order for it to work…

Also, it’s f****** Kalvin Phillips. If it was Rodri or Kroos, sure. But Kalvin Phillips only played (sat the bench) at city because he fit the English quota they needed.
