I just saw a headline Sky, "Is this the end of the Alexander-Arnold midfield experiment?". EXPERIMENT? In a major tournament. This just sums Southgate up, he has no idea what he's doing, no idea what his best team his, no idea what his players' best positions are. He's been in the job for over 7 years and still doesn't know this, how do people defend him?
I've always been frustrated that we didn't know our starting 11. The game against France in the World Cup felt like the first time there was a solid starting 11. BUT we get annoyed when he picks the same players, and we get annoyed when he picks new players who haven't played together. To be fair to him, he has like 6 weeks a year with players and we want him to pick on form, in which case, he'd have a new squad every single international break.
I do think it's time to change but can't understate how great the foundation Southgate's built in the national set up. But maybe now we need a ruthless winning manager (not sure we have that in England though)

Players feel more unified and supported more than before. Basically? There’s a much healthier national team set up. Hopefully the new manager can build on it and bring some winning mentality

I thought the same, but then thought, with this squad there doesn't need to be 'experiments', the notion shouldn't exist' we are blessed with interchangeable players and should be able to put a performance in no matter what the starting eleven. It's solely down to him and his limitations

He probably doesn't want to show all his cards yet so the opposition can be ill prepared when he finally drop Foden and bring in Gordon whose pace would be a problem to handle. Right now the weakest links in the team are Foden and Trippier. If they get dropped the team will be more balanced

We have had many of the best managers in the world, but have never had such a squad of talented players as those of the last 3 tournaments, so it is not always down to the wrong manager, but in this case, perhaps it is. One thing is certain, playing players out of position has never worked at international level, and that is down to the manager, not the players.

Southgate is the worst manager I've ever seen at this level and I've been saying it for 8 years! He managed to get a then decent Middlesborough team relegated before smarming his way into the FA set up.... Massively out of his depth he has no clue what he is doing.... The good news? Bellingham can play just about every midfield position without a major drop in his contribution to the team. Doing better than Foden did so far, shouldn’t be a problem…. Saying its brave to put Trent as a midfielder isn't the same as saying its a good idea. The fact is Trent playing there has not worked, he's not a midfielder, not technically good enough when on the ball under pressure. He's good when he's got time to pick out a pass when he has time to do so but in that central midfield position he has been found wanting and is a liability. That's not his fault, the blame lies solely at the person playing him in that position
My biggest issue isn't the fact that he tried Trent in that position, it could have been a good move with his passing capabilities. But the fact that he played him there again when it was clear and obvious that he isn't capable after the first game, that is unforgivable. The confidence of these lads now will be at an all-time low going into the knock phase if they don't rip Slovenia to pieces, a standard win won't suffice.
Everyone keeps blaming TAA but our best spell in both matches came when he was on the pitch and there was no improvement after he was subbed.

Southgate should've been experimenting BEFORE a major tournament, not during it. Trent just cannot play in the midfield, its embarrassing for Southgate to publicly say that he is pining for Kalvin Phillips, Kane isn't fit, Shaw isn't fit, Trippier isn't a left back, Rice can't do everything on his own and Foden is playing in a position where he doesn't play.
When he called up Mainoo I was impressed and thought ah yes hes seen the missing piece and grown the balls to pick him regardless of age and experience.. Then he goes and plays someone out of position there instead.

Surely should experiment during training, non competitive games or be guided by league performance
So many fans have seen all this before, it's disappointing but no shock. What happens next feels easy to predict:
1 - A better performance in the last group game and/or last 16
2 - Media forget the bad vibes and get back on the wagon. "England have arrived" etc...
3 - The same thing happens again and England go out with a weak performance, characterised by an inability to adapt during a game
4 - Southgate leaves and gets knighted
5 - Everyone gets excited about the next England manager prospects
6 - Everyone is disappointed with the new England manager appointment

What we need is a better, less defensive manager.
How many tournaments, over the years, have we looked at an England lineup and said, “We’re in with a great chance with a squad like this”. No group of footballers underperform like England and I can’t work it out. We’ve had a selection of the best managers in the world and they haven’t been able to get an England team to play their best football. It’s not Southgate’s fault, it has to be the casual, can’t be arsed attitude of some very rich footballers who just don’t feel pride in wearing the England shirt.
Graeme is absolutely spot-on, with the fullback having the easiest position on the pitch. You can see EVERYTHING from there... Reece James is the only player who can do the job that Waistcoat wants TAA to do... but hey, he "didn't play enough" *cough* (Luke Shaw)

I think I've solved it. Three at the back Guehi, Stones, Walker. Wing backs Gordon, Saka/Trent. CM Rice flanked by Bellingham and Foden. Up front Kane with Watkins/Bowen running off him.

He's had months to prepare his plans A, B, C, etc. Kalvin Philips was out of the picture months ago so if his system, whatever that is, requires that type of player then he should have sorted one out or changed the system. Experimenting now is ridiculous, but so is selecting a squad with only one left back who hasn't played this year and still isn't fit. Man Utd fans should be pleased with this development as he's working himself out of their manager's position.

The "experiment" clearly didn't work, but Southgate chose to restart the same 11, to continue the experiment and presumably to give the boys a chance to show they can play after all. The first sign of madness, is repeating the same thing and expecting a different result.

So many people shouting for Palmer or even Eze. The 1st change should be Gordon on left wing. The 2nd should be Konsa at left back. Foden on right with Walker overlapping. Bellingham at 10. Wharton and Rice midfield.
If that doesnt work you have a stromg bench. Palmer on for Bellingham after 60 min. Saka on for Foden. Watkins on for Kane.
These performances shouldn’t be a surprise. England have been dreadful since that 2-0 win over Malta.

In the 2023 qualifiers leading up to this, Phillips only played 1 full game out of the 8 games in Group C!
In 4 of the other games he stayed on the bench...games he did play he had, 70, 32, and 6 mins. Does that sound like a regular's stats? And no, at that point he wasn't injured.
He's the reason why Southgate thinks England didn't perform? Or... Southgate takes very good footballers ( if not great) and with his ideas about shutting back if we take the lead and positioning of these players, makes them look mediocre?
Southgate... a manager who gives excuses on one day that his players are tired after a long season ( yeah, other International teams have a long holiday before tournaments)
Or this time comes out with... ''He was worried his team might not gell ( I paraphrase there) because they haven't had a chance to play together.'' This is from a manager who never knows his squad before tournaments, and in the friendlies right before this tournament packed it with players that were never going anyway. So, the team players play too much and are tired ...or... they are unfamiliar and rusty.
But HEY ... he doesn't upset anyone or show up the F.A. and will wear any political armband that is prominent at any time of asking.
