  • Football fever is sweeping across Germany as Euro 2024 gets into full swing. England kicked off their campaign with a 1-0 win over Serbia, thanks to a Jude Bellingham header. It’s a familiar story: a bright start, lost control, and a nervy finish. Nonetheless, Southgate has led the boys to a win. However, with key figures like Foden struggling to impose themselves on the game, has it left us with more questions than answers?
The Tartan Army descended on Germany in their thousands, full of expectation ahead of their group opener against the host nation. But Scotland’s 5-1 thrashing in Munich has threatened to dampen their excitement and an early exit. What went so wrong for Steve Clarke’s men?
Simon, Graeme, and Troy discuss all this and more from Germany in the latest episode of Three Up Front.

Simon needs to STOP consistently digging out Graeme Souness every 3 minutes because its becoming uncomfortable to watch now. Yes Graeme gives it him back and obviously I'm well aware of that. But I honestly think if Simon Jordan didn't feel the constant need to show him up in front of whoever else they are both in a room with, then Grae wouldn't take the mick out of him.

Bellingham is amazing and he drives the team, but after only 7 minutes on clock he’d been upfront right and left , right mid, left mid he was everywhere and blowing, emptied the tank by halftime, you never see him jogging he’s either sprinting or walking to recover when he learns to manage the game better he’s gunna be some player.

Also as much as we talk about the rest, Harry Kane slows our play down and does not have the mobility to be a release for a ball up the channels.
At times the wingers were bombing down and Kane was outside of the box.
He is a world class operator but dropping deep all the time without the pace and mobility to get up and down causes our wingers or full backs to slow it down and second guess themselves.
Toney or Watkins are not better strikers but have more mobility and will run the channels if they need to run it and hold it and bring others into play

In my opinion that game lacked influence from big senior players. The Serb's analysed the issues they faced adapted and imposed their plan on the game. England's players failed in that I believe senior players would have been able to work out the issue and adapted on the pitch and took control. For me the lack of leadership in defence and midfield allowed the Serbs to take control. I think second half the lack of balance in terms of a left footed left back, with Foden and Bellingham all trying to operate in the same way in the same area made the left side redundant. If you look at the heat maps and pass maps for all three players they are literally identical! Second half the defence dropped too deep too quickly leaving a big space between defence and midfield and the front line failed to provide an effective out ball allowing the defence/team to squeeze up to halfway to play and control the game in the Serbian half! Having said that winning the first game is a big thing, can Southgate learn and adapt for Denmark?

Worth remembering that the only time England have won anything was when Alf Ramsey left Jimmy Greaves out of the team, at the time everyone said Greaves was the best English striker but he wasnt the best player for that England team. England will not progress with this style of play. Southgate needs to play the lads in their proper position, they need to speed up their play, and cross the damn ball into the penalty box. England wingers do not play like traditional wingers. Run at the defense and hug the sideline and get the ball into the penalty area. Foden, Saka and Bellingham need to take more on and drive pass them. Get the wingbacks behind the defense.

Why focus on individuals? What does the team need? It needs penetration on the left wing. It needs a ball winner in the middle alongside Rice to let him get forward. It needs a left back (why didn't Southgate bring one???) who can cross from the left. If Foden and Trent don't help with that it makes no difference what they've done for their clubs ... they don't fit in.

Fundamentally, Graeme is such a homer for the Premier League that he cannot countenance the fact that the best player England has produced in generations doesn't play in the Premier League, so he's constantly overrating some English player on a Prem side like Foden or Maddison as being on Bellingham's level.
Nobody in the world is on Bellingham's level. If Foden can't figure out how to play on the wing, he needs to put backside in a seat.

My take on England is, they are unprepared, but that is not a bad thing. They are in transition. You have all these amazing players but are still learning how to get the best out of them in what position. He left out guys who would be sure starters historically or had to leave out, obviously, the left is an issue (injuries) all your left backs are injured or prone to (super weird), We can't tell the dude what to do. As a fan of football, I would lower my expectations for England to quarters, and use these games to find your feet. This is going to be one beast of a team in 2-3 years if you can find a fit left-back, or have players stay injury free.
Again, could be eating my words, but I'm only looking at it from a purely logical perspective. The football fates I can't control, and they are illogical at best

I rarely watch S Jordan, due to his arrogant I know best attitude, it explains why he lost Crystal Palace .. Trippier had a very poor season for Newcastle and was injured and made many mistakes that cost Newcastle. It beggars belief that Joe Gomez did not play Left back, he played that role for Liverpool 19 times last year, plus 7 as a central Midfield holding player alongside Endo, he played 25 times a RB, his versatility allows England to move Walker to a CB, it allows Gomez to cover MF where Rice struggled, and if Gomez started as a left back, then you are playing a player who is fitter than Trippier and allows England players to move to other positions.. Shaw will need 6 games to get match fit,

Only Jude, Guehi, Saka and Walker played well with conviction.
Trent was OK, Foden was anonymous, and England had no threat from the left wing.
As a result , Kane got little service, and goal scoring chances were few.
England did retreat into their shells, and Serbia looked more likely to score in the second half.
As usual , Southgate failed to make the right substitutions early enough.
