This is Dr Joseph Shvidler a Seattle rhinoplasty specialist we get asked frequent questions whether an open rhinoplasty is more painful than a closed rhinoplasty. I've been doing open and closed rhinoplasty for the last 15 years and I can tell you with certainty that a closed rhinoplasty hurts a lot less than an open rhinoplasty. First and foremost we're not making the external incision where the sensory nerves travel and so that makes it definitely less painful - secondly we are doing much less invasive more preservation maneuvers inside the nose which hurt less tissue and there's less bruising less swelling and less pain - so most of our patients only need pain medications for the first day or two and then they transition to Tylenol Extra Strength.
