  • This is a list of all the secrets, quirks, and hidden things about the 1st Gen Tundra. The 1st Gen Tundra has more going on than you might think. I talk about the hidden aspects of their drivetrian, engines, bed/cab configurations, special editions, and more! There's a supercharger, a terminator T3 edition, and common quirks like a "low" oil pressure gauge or burnt-out drive light. There were alot of things that made the first-gen Tundra stand out. Hopefully this will help you decide which model you'd like to turn into an off road or overland build! Thank's for watching and be sure to check out other videos on mods or maintenance!

I've got an '06 SR5 access cab, with the 1GR, 537k miles. Oil pressure gauge doesn't read low, and the drive light hasn't ever burned out. Got it with 30k miles in '09. Been an awesome truck.

@@ToyotaNutjob I have nothing to gain by misrepresenting my Tundra's mileage. Are the data stamps easy to find on the engine, and transmission? If so, I can do an update video showing both are numbers matching, and original to the truck. Feel free to check out my 2006 Tundra playlist! ua-cam.com/play/PLOUNrCA5sSIM8WvzTJZykK7C2KOKEr5We.html
Been driving my '06 since January 2009, when it had 30K miles. I typically drive 30-40k miles per year. As of today, it has 537,806 miles. It's hard to believe, but I'm looking right at it! I recently stumbled upon some early driving videos from '09-'10 era, and will be uploading some throwbacks to the playlist as well.

02 SR5 here…my father bought the truck brand new in 02 and it’s owned by me now after his passing. The key lock gas door is an annoyance for me, and all of my AC knobs have fallen off. I do have the D light burned out and oil pressure gauge reads low. My drivers power window motor has failed twice. 235k miles now, some new suspension parts and engine maintenance parts like valve cover gaskets and belts. The 4.7 still runs perfectly, auto transmission shifts smoothly, AC blows cold, truck rides smooth and still has relatively nice interior for a 20yo truck. If it could last the rest of my life I’d never buy another truck.

I bought 3 of the first generation Tundras. By going to a professional radio shop that local car dealers recommend, people can have updated radios with navigation, Bluetooth, etc. Also, some radios can use an app that continuously updates navigation rather than pay for uodates. The updated mirrors for outside temperature, direction, and garage door opener are excellent. The trucks can also had a cell phone booster installed. Once all this is put in, it is updated to today's modern trucks.

I got about a year ago a '00 SR5 V8 2wd. It has 320,000 miles now and drives beautifully. The previous owner who I got it from when it had around 316,000 miles on it had taken such good care of the truck. I asked him what he gotten done to it and he told me he just kept up with oil maintenance, spark plugs, ect. The basics. But they never changed carrier bearing or fixed the drive shaft.luckily I had a wrecked sequoia of the same year. I've never had a toyota before. Always powrstroke or duramax. This is the best truck I've ever had. Hands down.

I believe the 05/06 models went to LED in the instrument cluster, my 2006 SR5 DC has all the cluster lights with factory LED's, so I think those years don't blow the "D" light bulb. Mine does have outside temp and compass in the mirror thankfully. When I upgraded all of my interior lights to LED I was surprised to see that only the driver footwell has a light. I highly recommend upgrading all of the interior lights and heat/AC dash lights to high quality (I used Sylvania) LED's. The dash dimming knob still works on all the lights too. It makes the interior bright and modern for only a few $$.

Good Video. The 2000 V8 motor was Built in Japan and shipped to the US. All subsequent years the motor was built in the USA.
There was a 2002 *Ivan Stewart special edition* that had an optional two tone perforated leather package that added significant bolstering to the seats. It was shown at the SEMA show that year, Toyota had Ivan Race the Tundra in the Baja 1000. In 2006 I contacted the company that produce the leather for toyota because Toyota no longer sold it. I was able to purchase it and have it installed for less than the stock leather and it is still in good shape. My 2000 currently has 90K and is rust free living in the SW. I don't have the oil pressure gauge issue, maybe the Japan built motors don't have the issue.

Also there's not enough leg room because the seats do not go back far enough. I'm gonna try swapping in the Sequoia seats but if that does not fix it I will not be keeping it.

The Tundra was designed solely for the North American market, designed in the US, and built in NA to compete with bigger US trucks, while at the same time avoiding the "chicken" tax. Toyota never had any intention of exporting it. Wouldn't make sense for a number of reasons. And yeah, they totally took the styling and name of the F150, but everything else vastly improved, as Toyota does. Great vids, man. Cheers.

I'm not exactly nerd level knowledgeable in Toyotas but I have seen these are having a growing popularity as expedition trucks and they've caught my attention. Personally I really prefer a manual in my after work and weekend rigs. Between the 3.4 5 speed and 4.0 6 speed, did it gain VVTI or did it have that across both engine options? I like my stuff dumb and simple. Also more piddly but can the crew cab back glass be fitted into a regular or access cab?

    • @208Tyler
      @208Tyler  Рік тому

The 4.0 had VVTI, the 3.4 did not. There’s very few 4.0 tundras, I’m not sure which cabs and which drivetrains (4x4 vs 4x2) could get the 4.0, let alone with the manual transmission.
No, crew cab rear window does not easily retrofit.
I would not get the 3.4 V6, the V8 is already not wildly powerful for a full size truck.

I have an 01 tundra 4.7 249k my oil pressure is in the middle when cold but once it warms up it will go to low at idle like at a light but soon as I move it goes up. I was scared this was an issue at first but I’ve been driving it for almost a year and it doesn’t seem to bother it all, I am going to change the oil pressure sending unit next time I change the oil I read that can stop that but I also read it is normal?? Idk. Crossing fingers and toes it’s normal. Oh and my drive light is burnt out too, changing to leds soon to solve that. I had a 91 22 re for years and I loved that truck. So far I’m thinking I might really sink some money into this truck and restore a lot of it (northern truck, rusty) and keep it as long as possible, I use it for a work truck but I don’t abuse it or do any heavy towing, so I think it’s gonna serve me well for a decade or two.

Answer to why the compass mirror. You have first understand you have Factory Options & Distributorship Option. The compass mirror is a Dist. Option they put in with package they make, or dealer upgrade. South Eastern Toyota ToyoGaurd would sometimes have (Hold Back) on the invoice. Hold Back is use to be 3% MSPR but I think its 5% now Dealer Invoice. Distributorship would ad $550 to dealer invoice back then.
I have 3 Tundras. The third I just bought for parts SR·5 access cab all 2003.
My 2 original Turdra's where bought brand new in late 2002
SR·5 TRD 2wd. (TRD package gives you a 7500LBS. towing cap. VS 5,000LBS) & 17 Wheels I swapped from my limited.
120K I just blew out the oil pump and killed everything from the block down. Crankshaft cost more than a beater 03 SR·5 with 175K. I bought.
Put in a new Timing Kit with water pump, oil pump, and rear main seal & the gaskets that need replacing. i hope to have it back this coming week.
    &
Limmited with 71K miles leather interior (big mistake) now I use the 16 wheels from the SR·5 and have it stock, where I lifted the TRD & put the larger tires. 20 years with a car is a super long time for me. I was used to having a new car every 5000 miles. I miss having a demo.

@braddeemer1840 Yes this is a very common issue and very easy to fix. The column shifter has a button on the tip for OD lockout when towing or hauling heavy loads. The wire inside the steering column for this button rubs against something, wears through the insulation and shorts out causing the OD lockout to engage randomly. Check that the "OD off" lamp on the instrument cluster is illuminated when the truck unexpectedly drops out of OD and this will confirm the wiring issue. If you don't see this lamp illuminated when this happens, that would suggest genuine transmission problems.
I fixed mine with electrical tape, but if it happens again I'll cut the wire so I can add heat shrink, then solder it back together
