One thing I would like to note to most people, is that the location of the dampener is on a “series 4” tractor (don’t know the year for the change, but I know for certain after 1988). All others, prior will be within the dash tower next to the handle for the hydrostatic drive control. This applies to 316, 318, 322, 332, 420, and 430. The one that he changes could very well be an optional or secondary shock that came on these, but I haven’t confirmed that yet.
ADDITIONAL SOLUTION! I also found that I had loose bolts where the differential attaches to the frame. This allowed the front of the Hydro to move substantially and cause jerking. I first replaced the damper and removed all play from my linkage but It still jerked. After tightening the 4 bolts, it now drives very smoothly. I hope this helps someone.
I have a 1987 John Deere 420 garden tractor. The transmission seems jerky at takeoff like you mentioned here but it also surges relentlessly. For example, just driving down the driveway in low speed half throttle it’ll nearly jerky right out of the seat. Could this same type of thing be causing that. The food was changed last year and filter and the level is correct. Any input would be appreciated.
Hey Norman! You are really catching on in the GT world! What is the part number? I have a 317 that only jerks in reverse. I am getting ready to remove the pan and have a good look at it and change the fluid and filter. Thanks!
I purchased a JD 420. The hydro jerks. I changed the damper and took most play out of the linkage. I have replaced the trans oil and filter. It is still jerky. It does take off when you push the lever up, but it just doesn't stay steady. Oil level is correct. Any suggestions?
Ok so I have a question I have a John Deere 300 so I have to use the lever you were using in this video to move the tractor but when it gets worked up it won't stop moving I have to drop the plow to keep it from moving and sometimes that doesn't work can you help?
I just bought a 317, would this be the problem if it doesnt seem to want to go as fast forward or seems like there is a lag in getting it up to higher speed when pushed all the way forward? Or what could be the problem? It shifts smooth forward and reverse. Another question entirely, related to the steering, if there is a lot of play in the steering like a 1/4 to 1/2 steering wheel turn before tires turn thoughts on what that could be? Thank you for your great videos.
Would a Cub Cadet 149 jerky hydro be as simple as this to fix? When i raise the Hydro lever sometimes the tractors jerks to HIGH SPEED lol. Same thing is reverse.
Hmm that's interesting. Your friction disc may be worn. Instead of getting a new one I suggest tightening it up with a different material. I had this plastic type packaging that came with some tools that I use on the cub cadets and it works great
I have John Deere , but i don't know what model i found a ser, # on it that reads ( C314J 121098M ) . Does the C314J mean it is a 314 ? Thanks for any help.
@@Isavetractors I need the OEM part # if you have the time. Greatly appreciated. JD tractor stores started new program for part search. Took 45 mins to find mower blades for 316! Crazy.
can someone tell me how fast, top speed (mph) a 316 can go? i i was just curious. and they all should of had a o.e hour meter? correct ? mine is missing. this 1984 model was given to me they think is a blown head gasket cause it smokes bad and runs bad. my brother had given me his d110 that had to same problem and i fixed it and sold it for 400.00. and on that one i can see why in the blown spot and with my research the head does not bolt down exactly evenly around the piston. i am looking forward to working on the 316 and learning about the small engines. i also have an old murray 5 hp ride mower 1969 model the neighbor gave me i would like to restore to a certain point. along with the jd 316 , i was a auto technician for 23 years....no more and like the idea of working withe small engines and riders. i love watching all the john deere videos and learning all i can thanks to all you john deere guys for posting your videos!
When my grandpa and i picked up a cub cadet hydro garden tractor we decided to pull it and halfway the tractors hydro broke and we replaced the plunjers and he is going now and it drives nothing happend

I learn something new every time I watch your videos. Thank you
Thanks Norman! Always appreciate your instructional videos!
Nice job Norman on the 316, that a great little tractor.
That has to be one of the stouter looking garden tractors from that era. Built like a tank.
Might be getting a 316! This will help a lot!
Nice job and video Norman always learning something new thank you
i just picked one of these up, great to see i'm not the only one...
Great information Norman, thank you very much
Excellent video and explanation!
Most 316’s have dampeners behind the dash. The one by the hydro are rev-4. It’s a good upgrade for people with the earlier versions on 300 series.
