    True. Relationships are a lot of work. If you're not willing to do it, don't enter a relationship and disappoint someone who's willing.

  • @mariokarter13

    Not one or both parties dependent on the other, but two fully rounded people. That makes sense.

    • @fdr100100
      @fdr100100 8 років тому

      +mariokarter13 that makes sense? seriously?
      you complete me has nothing to do with dependence or Independence its about mmmm i have money a job a house and everything for a comfortable except i still feel incomplete i know its because i have no companionship
      besides emotional dependence for your significant other is importnat for bonding so that when you have kids you stay together and raise the child in a stable environment
      people always see that if your not independant you are inferior

    • @mariokarter13
      @mariokarter13 8 років тому +4

      ***** Dependency and love are two entirely different things. If you wanna get technical "you complete me" could be seen as dehumanizing your partner. "You aren't your own person, you're part of me."

    • @fdr100100
      @fdr100100 8 років тому

      +mariokarter13 dehumanizing ? what the hell is wrong with your brain, being in a relationship is just having a friend you can fuck on the regular and have kids with if you desire
      dont take everything so seriously

    • @mariokarter13
      @mariokarter13 8 років тому +3

      ***** How does your description differentiate itself from "Friends With Benefits?" You don't have to be in a relationship with someone to get pregnant.
      What I meant by "dehumanizing" is that if one person completes the other do we have two complete people or just one? Are you your own human being in this situation or part of another? It's dehumanizing in the sense that it makes you less than a complete person.

    her advise is only good for a small percentage of the population who are 100% complete and don't need other ppl to feel good and confidence-but most ppl need a partner to feel good and complete

    • @RawrFishAE
      @RawrFishAE 8 років тому +38

      At the end of the day, you're always responsible for your own happiness. If you can't even feel good and confident on your own, how can you expect to help someone else feel good and confident about themselves? Sure, it's possible, but your relationship will be fragile, at best. I don't know about you, but I'd feel guilty going into a serious relationship knowing that I'm not 100% okay beforehand. In my opinion, relationships aren't meant to make sad people less sad, they're meant to make happy people happier. Cheers.

    • @Beetleburger
      @Beetleburger 8 років тому +10

      +luvyou baby It's not healthy to depend on anyone for your happiness. It's unfair to you and your partner to expect them to "complete" you. "Completion" is introspective, it's something you have to come to, no one else can lead you there.

    • @TransparentLabyrinth
      @TransparentLabyrinth 8 років тому +1

      +luvyou baby Nobody doesn't need other people, unless they are like... a sociopath or something. I dunno. The point is more about people thinking that they need a monogamous, romantic partner, with whom they are both emotionally and physically intimate on a regular basis. It's a very specific requirement that people think they need.
      If I were to compare emotional and physical intimacy to needs that you can't live without, I'd argue that emotional intimacy is like water... you can go for a bit without it, but it really keeps you from dying. And physical intimacy is like hunger... you can be starving for quite a while without it and you'll be ok, you just won't feel like your full strength is there.
      But... emotional intimacy can be from a friend, a parent, a son, a daughter, a brother, a sister, etc. And physical intimacy can be anything from a hug or cuddling to sex itself, the big one that it's known for.
      I don't buy it at all that most people need a "partner." I think most people need at least one or two people they are close to in their lives, like on the best friend level of things. But a romantic partner? Nah.

    • @fdr100100

      +luvyou baby hahah no way here advice is good for no one at all
      no human being feels good an complete without the need for a partner they have just done enough mental magic to self castrate themselves because they are socialy and mentaly incompatible to another human
      which overall is a good thing because they are essentially kicking themselves out of the human genome

      +John Smith The war on men. What a joke. Only utter wimps say this. If he gets called anything it's probably because he has some whiny victimization mentality and bashes/hates woman. Big Difference. Whoopi just said she doesn't want the trouble of a relationship. She is happy with a cat. Some commenters said they don't even want a cat…even that is too much work. This is a different subject altogether…from your pathetic delusion of a war on men and the empty existence that surely leads to. I suspect you men get this way so you have an excuse to pull away from women and then don't have to deal with the fact that you aren't wanted by women. The kind of men women find attractive are men who have enough self-esteem to support all causes that benefit woman, and they have better things to do than make shit up like a war on men, and then sit around sucking their thumb and whining about it. Honestly…it's truly pathetic.

    This is taken a little too far out of context. There is absolutely nothing wrong with feeling "whole" when you're with your significant other. As a matter of fact, it's completely normal.
    Whoopi makes it perfectly clear that she can't handle the work required to make a relationship work, so I'm not surprised if she can't handle someone who needs her. But she's absolutely right in the sense that you shouldn't get into a relationship if you're unwilling to put in the effort.

    Hard to read Stephen here. Is he playing devil's advocate or legitimately bothered by her views? He seems taken aback by them. Truth is, marriage is unnatural yet we define our entire culture around it as if living with one person your entire life and only having sex with this one person is healthy and normal and natural. It is not. The burden of demanding we all live this way and that not doing so is wrong is at the heart of what she means. Embrace the married life if you truly want it and benefit from it - and can do the work. But be free to say no and to love this too. Both are OK. That's her point. But our culture says only one is. And this is wrong. Most marriages fail. She is explaining one reason why.

      This is only my opinion, but I feel that work is not inherently having someone hold authority over you though. A better perspective might be that you work in a garden to keep it healthy and beautiful. You water it, you feed it, you pull out the weeds, maybe keep some insects and get rid of others, etc. Work here just means effort. Choosing to be with someone is a commitment that requires effort even during the easy times so that you can make it smoother through the rough times. Love and passion are important components of a relationship, but you want a strong foundation to build on top of. That means actively talking and listening to each other, learning each other's love languages, confronting problems in the relationship in a healthy way, building trust, etc. and all of that is really hard to do sometimes, even if you love that person and choose to be with them! And for some people, it's not worth the work. Again, those are my thoughts. If a relationship ever feels like the other person has unbalanced authority over you, that's definitely not a good relationship.

    When a woman says she's independent and doesn't need a man, it's "You go, girl!" - nothing but cheers and applause.
    When a man says he's independent and doesn't need a woman, it's "You're a misogynist", "Did your mommy not love you as child?", "What's wrong little boy, afraid of commitment?", "When are you finally going to grow up/man up?", "You're so selfish, relationships aren't just about you, it's about what you can do for the other person."

      +Karl Stocke Untrue. It could also be 'You go player' or something like that. If you have stature, you can make people envious of your choice of not tying yourself down and be in awe. If you lack confidence, you will be effected by such above lines and people will use them on you.

      +Karl Stocke How sad. All she said is that a relationship isn't worth the trouble…so she has a cat instead. Some commenters say they don't even prefer a cat…even that is too much work. But you heard male victimization in that message. Pathetic. Do you people ever stop feeling sorry for yourselves?.

      +Karl Stocke You just have no idea how much people expect women to be in a relationship, and find it weird when a woman is single. If people see a single man in public they don't even blink. A woman is alone, and complete strangers feel they should have this right to start a conversation about "why aren't you married?" (and eventually, why don't you have children). It is much worse for women. So when a woman for once says I WANT to be not married and without children, there are cheers because it is such a difficult concept for people. No one calls a man a misogynist just because he is single.

    So, I guess we flat-out praise celibacy now. No wonder our culture also has the most anti-depressant prescriptions per capita.

      Yeah, casual sex doesn't exist and it really sucks that people are treating their depression now. It was so much better back in the day when people just jumped into a lake with a bag of bricks tied to their leg and left their family to deal with it.

    I dont buy it completely, because its human nature... Hell its the nature of all biological organisms to seek the company of others, Do you know how we punish the hardest of criminals, people who are murderers, pedophiles, rapists in prison? we put them in isolation.
    So dont tell me that someone who is depressed because there lonely need to first be happy being alone before they can be in a healthy relationship.

      +mrevilevil2 Keyword "Romantic". I quite certain wr mentioned nothing of that. He specifically said "its the nature of biological organisms to seek the company of other" which has been proven. Reading Comprehension.

      I agree with you that there's nothing wrong with letting another person help you, but in this case Whoopi is talking about the fact that it's okay to be content without a romantic relationship
