I almost have a tin ear, but love plunking around on my standard ukulele. The pineapple shape is so cute I wanted to make it my second uke, but didn't want to buy something just because it looked different.... but thank you for proving they sound different! I even "quizzed myself" by covering the screen and skipping around, and I could still tell which was which. Now I have the evidence I needed to treat myself, haha.
Wow 😮 Huge difference. I hear the pineapple as darker and more "reserved" and the standard ukulele as warmer and more forthcoming. Both are very lovely!
Wow. First real comparison I have seen (heard 🤓). A clear difference. Worth having both. If having to choose it would be the standard as I like plucky brighter sopranos. But if I could only have one it would be the pineapple because of its more balanced tone. Cheers.
Both seem to be really nice instruments. I think I agree with your appraisal/comparison of the tone, based on what I hear in my headphones. I've been coming across Uma more and more lately, I see that they make some beautiful instruments. Maybe my next one... ?!
I was given a pineapple ukulele about a year ago, to learn how to play. I'm not musical at all- I love music, always have, but can't read it and haven't played anything since junior high band. I'm 55. I F*CKING love playing the ukulele now, I love the feeling of making a great sound- with my own fingers! It's kinda mind-blowing. I know I suck at it but I love it all the same. After hearing the differences between these two, I am ridiculously grateful that I got a pineapple! I love the warm round tone! Thank you!
The pineapple seemed more rounded out like the sound reached. "8" shaped ukulele was more sharp. With each drum, the sound had a crazy attack. The pineapple shape was smooth
Thanks for the comparison Matt. Your playing was consistent and showed off the differences nicely. I liked both in different ways. For the price, it's hard to choose. Buy one, get one free? 😅
I was in touch with them directly for some photos for an advert for UKE Magazine some months ago and I asked them the same thing - please make a tenor version!
Nice comparison! A pineapple never interested me, but this video changed my mind. If I buy another ukulele, I'll think about a pineapple instead of the Ohana Pequeno I had looked into.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 what a cracking pineapple uke... was that a little ditty Super Mario? Anyway both sound really good so it's lovely to have different choices at the end of the day!
thank you im building 1 from paddlepop sticks and bamboo skewers wanted to make it that shape for ease of construction have never seen 1 b4 and i love that extra bass sound however i went the the norm next will be pineapple will be a 5 stringer is why im doing this
Yabsolutely spot on with your description of the pineapple shape! Only now I'm interested to hear what it sounds like compared to a Uma tenor ukulele 😁 I wonder if the pineapple shape is more difficult to hold due to its thicker body you'd say? e.g. does it sit further away from the body than a regular shaped uke? -'everything you wanted to know about pineapples and melons but were afraid to ask' 😂- And Matt, that Caribbean music... that's not being silly that's just certifiably NUTS 🤣 LOL!!
No sooner have I ticked one video off my list and now I have another to do! I don't find it more difficult to hold... but I may have a bit of a blind spot here as I hold all sorts of shapes and sizes (of uke!) every day. It is a bit like ukulele necks... if I had a ukulele with a neck shaped like toblerone I probably wouldn't notice!
@@WorldofUkes'Pineapple, melons, apples, oranges...' ⚖️ 🤩 Boy, this is turning into a whole fruit basket! Oh, and a Toblerone to boot. Yum! So no favourite shape of uke you gravitate to?
Fantastic! The difference is clear, and it was a good joke. I should also apologise - I accidentally hit the thumbs down before cancelling and hitting thumbs up as intended.
I don't know whether to say"The Pineapple shape produces a richer sound" or that "It takes a lot of the jangly brightness out of the sound of a Concert size". I think it's rather like the difference between high and low g on a Tenor. In other words there's a place for both depending on your style and of course the style of the piece you play. My preference would be the Pineapple shape as it is for a low g tenor and I would consider it as an alternative to a long neck Concert with a low g string set. To my ear the Pineapple did sound more like a low g Uke when strummed. This is why so many of us develop severe cases of UAS isn't it. 🤣 And frankly, you're not helping. 🤔😁
Yes, tricky with video and different speakers. I think at least you can tell there is a difference. But hard, I agree, to work out your favourite unless you're in the room.
Oh No! Matt… No sooner than I had to turn off your top ten as the 🍍sounded so nice. You then do this video……man o man. At this rate am going to have to cite your videos as the reason for my divorce 🤣🤣, am renaming it the painapple. On a serious note, I do really like the Uma pineapple, it is more bass and mids for me. Turning off again. Thanks Matt have a great week.
Ah... I've got another 300 pineapple Uma demos on my to-do list for next week! ;) (If it helps, right now there's a used - but perfect - one in the special offers!)

Not bad for £199 I don't think, no!
pineapple seemed way more full and rich with more deep sound...
Frankly, surprised me is.
I didn’t expect the difference to be that significant!
I am so pleased there was a detectable difference (or it would have been a pointless video!)

Thanks, great comparison! They both sound really nice. I think I need both.
That's not just 'a little bit' warmer. At least on the recording where I hear it from.
It makes a big difference!
Nice video dude! Totally heard the difference and helped me choose my ukulele!!!

Very interesting. The pineapple is, to my ear, warmer and more mellow. If there were a baritone pineapple I'd be really interested.
I think a tenor pineapple with Romero UBB strings would be an interesting option - so that's the same tuning as a baritone.

Wow. Hard to choose. Thanks for your review, and the pineapple is a rounder sound!
It seems logical that a pineapple should be rounder and sweeter!
@@WorldofUkes yes!
Getting my pineapple in two days! Really excited ❤
I really wish uma made this pineapple in a tenor or concert long neck. I've thought about buying the blue concert a bunch 😂

This was a really nice comparison Matt. I particularly liked the extra fullness to the high notes up the fretboard on the Pineapple.🙂

I had imagined plenty of people doing that during the 'joke'!

Just things I made up off the top of my head.
Maybe not entirely scientific, but I think your feeling definitely stands up to scrutiny. Those two instruments sounded very different.
Thank you - I mentioned that as I suddenly had a feeling that I might be wrong, having not done any preparation in advance!
Pineapple sounded louder to me. I may have to get one.
Double bout = crisp/clear: pineapple = warm/ smoky
I think you’re right. More changslang on the double bout, more traditional Hawaiian sound on the pineapple.
changslang is a new one on me, but makes sense!
@@WorldofUkes Typo. Sorry. Meant chang a lang!
Pineapple is definitely louder. Not sure I prefer the tone, though. Can't trust the sound through my computer and hearing aids.
