  • This was the first time I had ever set out to only fish with glide baits. I recently caught my first bass on a glide and now wanted to see what would happen fishing all day with them.

John, This has probably been explained already but, on your baitcasters, ALWAYS reset your drag. Especially if you haven't used it in a little while. The drag on baitcasters will loosen when they sit for a short while.

    • @brianathern9154

As a policy I back off all of my drags and reset to where I need them on the next trip. It helps prevent any "flat spots" on the drags washers inside the reel. Reset is basically setting the drag at proper tension for the baits you're throwing. Helpful?

@@ColtWhitley if you cannot back the drag all the way out then adjust the tension gradually you may need to take it in for repairs. Or check in with the old timer veteran fisherman at your local bait shop. Those folks are usually the hidden gems

    Nice video
    I am NOT a Expert
But I do use Glide Baits
So I can give you the same advice I was given
I was taught , your glide bait suspend or slowly or slowly sink
Work the glide bait SLOW with up to 30 seconds of it stopped
And other times with a sort of quick pace of jerks and or twitches and then STOP
Have a fast moving shallow diving bait on another rod
Miss a hit or see a fish that follows , Stop the glide bait and throw the shallow diving bait on the other rod
I mean let the glide bait just hang there and swim the other lure by it a time or 2
But have your foot ON the Rod Butt of the rod with the glide bait
As I have had bass grab the glide bait after ignoring the fast moving plugs

John, a tip when using the swimbaits is to put a treble hook on the front split ring, or having it ride up and down the line. It can dramatically increase your hookup ratio. I also recommend the Dobson swimbait rod with 25 lb fluorocarbon.

I LOVE Glidebaits!!! I will be doing Custom Paint jobs on Glidebaits in the future on my channel. So far I have been just doing Custom Paint jobs on Storm Wiggle Warts for the most part. I caught my personal best Rainbow Trout on a Wiggle Wart that I painted. It weighed 5.3 pounds! It's quite a feeling of accomplishment when you catch a fish on a lure that you painted yourself. Extra satisfying.
I've also tied up some crazy looking articulated "creature bait" streamers for spey fishing (water borne 2 handed fly fishing technique). It takes hours in the case of tying articulated streamers. And the painting of lures can take days sometimes waiting for the paint to cure between paint color coats but when you finish them, you're SO proud of them. Painting lures is pretty easy and can be done with just spray paints and some window screen and clamps to hold the screen in place while you paint the lure. Check out Marling Baits UA-cam to watch the Master make and paint baits, and you will be hooked!

Oh , I should have added
    I am in NW Ohio
It got up to 50 or 52 degrees today with scattered lite showers and a West wind
But I had great luck on the Large Mouth Bass
I fished several 2 to 20 acer ponds with 1 to 2 foot deep areas protected from the wind
All the ponds had clear water and dark bottoms in the shallow areas
I got the boat out of the wind and fished 2 lures
A 3 1/2" Berkley PowerBait Gilly in Pumpkinseed and a 3 1/2" Cabelas Fisherman Series Go-To Swim Minnow in Sunfish
I was SLOWLY working the PowerBait and working the Swim Minnow at a slow to moderate pace
3/0 jig hook and 1/8 or 3/16 oz head
Many of the bass were in a foot of water working the top edge of muskrat channels , IMO looking to ambush bait fish

As Gerald Swindle would put it, you got into the oooh ooh baits. If you want to really get into the 3oz class, the Dobyns 795/806SB or the St. Croix Bass X 2-4oz are great rods. It's not that the regular heavy rods don't "work", it's that the rods built for it work you less (trust me, I did the same). Makes it feel like you're throwing a senko or crankbait. Personally I actually do like the Deps 175, but I actually buy them from Japan at a regular price rather than the 300% markup of US sellers. Winter/Spring is my confidence time when it comes to big baits, especially fond of bluegill like colors (doesn't need to be hyper-realistic, just in the realm).
Lots of good swimbait people do work in small boats. Only real tip I'd give from watching, parallel the bank. Shallow water is an easy trapping location as the bass can sit in the deeper water and trap the bait to a smaller location requiring less work. Going from shallow to deep gives the bait the opportunity to go anywhere requiring more possible work. Oh, but that's not to say rats and slammers aren't fun. When you hear/ see a fish blow up on a 7-9 inch topwater, it's something else. Oh, actually the second tip and this comes from Matt Allen, don't use your arms for the big baits, use the rotation of your hips. He got a torn rotator cuff from doing it for years and there's just no reason to put the wear on your body stopping you from fishing at all for weeks when the lure will fly out there on it's own. Glue your arms to your body and let the rod and lure do the work.

You're learning. NEVER throw expensive baits in risky water.!! Too much brush on the banks in too skinny water.

John I don't know if you watch Milliken fishing on UA-cam or not. But if you don't you should check him out. He has a lot of videos on fishing glide baits and he's part owner in 6 sense fishing. Good luck and rip lips.

Learning something new again and challenging yourself brother. The wind and weather gave you some grief, then that darn tree branch. Keep after it. Blessings John
