    Hello Nicky, I have finished writing my non fiction book and spent a lot of time on the reference list with citations. I am stuck with formatting and thinking about the option of indesign. Will I be able to transfer the list that functions within the text from word to indesign?

    How did you get the text frames "ready to go"? I don't have text frames and have to make them for each page.

    Okay, I thought that was the question that it was the same person writing and publishing.
    Would you recommend before placing to change the word document to a text document? I have seen a couple mention that.

    I suppose it depends on your system - I run a quad with 8 GB of memory and typically have between 2 and 3 300 page indesign documents open at once.. along with Photoshop, my browser and MS Word and never encounter a slow down... the only time I delay is when scrolling through the pages and they are redrawing in the Pages panel... even that isn't too bad. IMO - easier to just keep it all together than playing with another things later to put it back together.

    Hi Joyce. I cover this very topic with an indepth course at tutsplus.com. I show you exactly how to do everything you mentioned. Word is best for the manuscript and you want to bring that format into InDesign.

    Thanks for the video - it's very helpful. If I wish to add illustrations (that do not have any fixed space on the space), should I should InDesign or Word?

  • @designlikeapro
    @designlikeapro  11 років тому

    This is true. However, if you are dealing with hundreds of pages and lots of illustrations, InDesign runs faster if you keep things organized in separate documents and link them together. Of course, this is just my workflow preference, you are definitely free to keep everything in one document.

      Design Like a Pro First, thank you so much for this! Secondly, if I do it as you’ve suggested in separate files, how then would I link them all together at the end?
      Thank you!

    When formatting the document into InDesign, how do you eliminate the large tab setting and make each indent smaller?

    • @designlikeapro
      @designlikeapro  10 років тому +1

      Tab settings are under Type>Tabs. You'll be able to move the tabs to your desired placement. The indent settings are under your paragraph settings>First Line Indent (second option down). That will get you started adjusting those settings that import automatically from your Word doc. Just make sure you have the text selected that you want to adjust.

    • @designlikeapro

      Is the filler text appearing at the end of your first-page text after import or on additional pages where your text boxes are linked after the first-page text is inserted?

    • @doctorcatnip2551
      @doctorcatnip2551 5 років тому +1

      @@designlikeapro Thank you very much for taking the time to reply to my comment!
      The filler text appears after the first page of the text I imported.
      I also tried to set up a book without filler text an still only the first page appears.

    • @designlikeapro
      @designlikeapro  5 років тому

      And you have linked text boxes on every page so that the text will flow from your Word doc into the pages in InDesign? Linked text boxes is when you place a box, click the plus sign and continue to place text boxes on all the other pages. Alternately, you can just place on text box, import your Word doc and then click the plus sign to add a text box to each page after import. It sounds like you either only have one page of content, or it's not bringing in all of your pages from Word into InDesign.

    Would it not be better to work in InDesign from the start rather than starting in word then bringing into InDesign?

    • @designlikeapro
      @designlikeapro  8 років тому

      This is rare in the book publishing world because you have the author writing the copy in Word and then a different person brings that into the final book layout. If you were responsible for everything, then you can do everything in InDesign. I find it more challenging for longer writing though. Word is a better platform for that.

  • @josimons2870

    As soon as I saw this, I went to my book and tried to change the format to 6x9 as you suggest. But I didn't see that as an option. There were many choices but that wasn't one of them. Also, am wrestling with the fact that I have 165 photos and illustrations. Do I put them in my Word document before trying to place it into InDesign?

    • @designlikeapro
      @designlikeapro  8 років тому

      You can't enter a custom size? Also, I wouldn't place photos in Word as they wont' carry over into InDesign. Word is more for text and then you style everything in InDesign.

    • @josimons2870
      @josimons2870 8 років тому

      So far the menu for size of paper doesn't include 6x9. I was going to call Microsoft to ask about that. I hired someone to do my layout and they couldn't get my photos to go in the right place so I'm now on own trying to do it and it's so complicated! So appreciate you responding to me! We already picked a template but I don't know why the pictures wouldn't cooperate. I have 165 of them.

    • @designlikeapro
      @designlikeapro  7 років тому

      Placing photos in Word and carrying them over to InDesign isn't ideal. Word is best left for text only. 6x9 isn't a normal size for Word either. This is a custom size that you will need to set in the document under Page Layout -> Size -> More Paper Sizes. However, most authors type their manuscript in Word at a regular letter size and the designers format everything in InDesign later. You don't have to have everything perfect in Word for the final book since InDesign will take care of that.

    I'm working on a book. My editor is still fixing the text. If the word document is changed there a way that it can automatically updates the indesign file?

    • @designlikeapro
      @designlikeapro  7 років тому

      You can place Word files and link to them so that when the Word file changes, you can update it in InDesign. (The key is the “Create Links When Placing Text and Spreadsheet” checkbox in the File Handling pane of the Preferences dialog box. There is limited control with this method though and you may lose formatting. You might want to check out the WordsFlow plugin as it offers a lot more options for syncing between Word & InDesign.

    Hi. New user here. It doesnt import all of my 446 pages. Only the preview page. It also doesnt help that you didnt tell us how to add and setup that text box. After my text imported in the wring position and cropped out half of my text i finallu figured gow to add that box...but strangely the page size and margins do not match. Both are set exactly the same (5x8 .5 margin sides, .76 margin top n bottom) yet my imported PDF (doesn't let me import doc or docx) is way larger... Any advice?

    • @shinobi1014
      @shinobi1014 4 роки тому

      Okay so i finally figured out how to import docs (cant have them open in word while imprting to ID) bit i did notice that it kept my margins in the doc but within my margins of ID... Like margin within margin.
      This learning curve is a wild one lol

    • @shinobi1014
      @shinobi1014 4 роки тому

      I see you covered that later in this video (was following along from start.)
      But its still importing ONLY the first page and changing my font in word doesnt help because ID cant find the selected fonts.

    • @designlikeapro
      @designlikeapro  10 років тому

      If you are placing the manuscript into a text frame and see a red + symbol, that means you can click that and continue to place more text frames until you have run out of text from your Word doc. It will usually load the entire Word doc into one text frame only.

      Design Like a Pro I have a question , I know how to flow the text from one text frame to another but you seemed to do it in one click.... all your pages were filled with text. Im working with 600 pages i cant imagjne clicking through them one by one just to get the raw text in place. Thank you for the help.

      I have written my thesis in word, around 180+ pages, with lots of figures and tables in there. What would be the best way to import into indesign. And is it worth it to go with the trouble of importing into indesign when all the layout of text looks fine in word?

    I find it funny that even after you adjusted the MS Word file to 6x9 - it STILL didn't match your file in Indesign... lots of misleading info here. You should have mentioned right off the bat to be sure the Indesign Clipboard Handling parameters are setup to keep all formatting... that is a major setting that will confuse many users if not setup correctly!
