It is really solid! Wouldn’t say it’s a favourite (yet) for me but it’s a solid fantasy series that everyone should read! I finished book two last week and it was really good. Excited to get to book 3 next month!
Great review! Don't really have any room on my tbr at the moment for it, but my library has the whole trilogy on audio so I might have to check this one out on that format instead.
I’m glad you enjoyed this better than I did. The magic was the best part and the themes of justice and justices as a social role distinguishes it from other fantasy books. Unfortunately I could not care about the first person pov and the mysteries was a little predictable. I wonder what you will feel about the rest of the series since there’s a lot of mixed reactions about book 3 from what I could gather.
Excellent review Zara. Our opinions definitely aligned on this one. I really enjoyed every scene involving magic in this book. I love when that horroresk vibe lands real nicely in my fantasy books. This read along was so much fun!! I'm gonna try to catch up but I just can't put down the Scar by Mieville. lol.
Thanks Dan! Agreed on the horror aspects too. It was great having you a part of it. We’ll be waiting for your thoughts once you start :) good to hear Scar is going well!
You know, I've been interested in the series only because of the cover--but your reviews are excellent, and now I want to read it. During a book buying ban... oh well!
I appreciate that you skipped the plot summary. In my opinion, most books are best enjoyed by going into them knowing as little as possible (which is why I only ever give the most cursory summaries of the setting at the outset of the books when I do my reviews).
I even stopped reading blurbs at the back of the book a few years ago because for some they give away far too much. That's why I don't read blurbs for Robin Hobb's books.
I found this book pretty mid tbh. I believe the author is a fan od Dan Abnett's Eisenhorn trilogy - this one's so good (a bit of rushed ending in books 2 and 3 - still so good ❤). Would recommend you to check them out if interested.
I’m in the middle of the third book in this series, and I’ve been really loving it. Glad to see it get some love.
Can’t wait to read book three next month.
I loved this series, the best fantasty I've read in years. Books 2 and 3 get even better.

Ohhh nice one! Excited for when you get to it.

Your criticisms are totally fair and I definitely had issues with the first POV in the second book (review coming out soon).

Sorry not sorry haha! You’ll like this series, for sure.

Totally agree, Josh!

Yeah I really want to read Eisenhorn. I think I own the first book. Thanks for reminding me :)
