1) In Sri Lanka, saying "you've put on" is actually a compliment, unlike in Europe 😆 2) The person offering tea assumed you were from Australia. 3) Tea is consumed in two ways: with milk (milk tea) and without (plain tea). 4) The fruit you tried was Rambutan, similar to Lychee.

Most Sri Lankans consider getting chubbier as a way of them being successful. It may have originated from old age since we had a lot of families living in rural areas where people had a hard time finding food, and if someone is successful and good with money, they get to eat a lot of food as they want. I don't know if this is entirely correct. I just wanted to point out the fact that she wasn't disrespecting him at all.

What she meant was that you have gained weight. Saying "you have become fat" in Sri Lanka does not necessarily mean you are fat; it means that you have gained weight. She compared how you looked previously when you last visited her place to your present appearance. There is nothing to be concerned about Tim, especially in your case.
Dear Tim, In Sri Lanka, if someone you know says ' you have gained weight '. Just take it as a compliment. Because that means ' you are healthy and happy and therefore you have gained a little weight.'❤
