I still have original (COMMODORE AMIGA BBS DLG Software) + Manual in binder format + 3 original floppy discs. Wonder if the data is still on the disks ;)
I remember running my Own bbs before images on webpages were a thing. My school didn’t have internet but I was using gopher to order books out from the nearby university using my mums student card. It was cool, and I miss it - Amateur radio operators were using this type Of setup as part of their packet ax.25 comms and I suspect that’s where some of the development came from.
Oh yeah BBS's were great for a lot of things from sharing images, text and the awesome ascii art/demo scene stuff that was passed around. Amateur radio people did used to share stuff. There's a really cool documentary on it and I believe you are correct that is where at least some of the initial idea came from. They just wanted to share newsletter and then BBS's exploded into this massive thing for almost two decades.

Remember bbs like it was yesterday! 😀 easy to run up a huge bill easily lol as I found out in my teens
