I would highly suggest reading this if you intend to get Betabound.
There are two major problems with Betabound that you might not like. Well, there are a few more but they're more minor.
Betabound re-introduces discontinued items from Starbounds early-access days that have been replaced with better, more useful items in the game proper. Many of these items have no real purpose or use and are weaker than what they were replaced with, and can cause massive confusion to the player and cause them to end up regretting using materials to craft things that are much weaker than they thought.
The biggest issue in Betabound is that it brings back older discontinued weapons. Many melee weapons in Starbound when it first came out were unique in that they would shoot some form of projectile based on their element, even a few unique weapons which would spray a type of red acid and the like. These projectiles cost no energy, so you could dual-wield one-handed swords and spam your attack button, creating an infinite amount of projectiles that do the same, if not more damage than actually physically hitting an enemy would do. Make no mistake, these weapons are so overpowered that you could take them into Frackin Universe and DOMINATE nearly everything up until Aether gear. I took some of these weapons and fought the Aeon boss in the Arcana mod(a huge HP sponge) and absolutely WRECKED him. These weapons also corrupt your normal loot pool, so even if you elect to ignore these weapons to enjoy the rest of what Betabound has to offer while maintaining a healthy balance, you'll end up finding them everywhere in chests...replacing other loot you might be interested in.
In my honest opinion, Betabound does not offer anything of real significance or importance, and the weapons it brings back into the game completely break any balance the game might have had. If you don't care about that then by all means go ahead and get the mod, but take this into consideration before getting it.
Luckily, if you know what you want from Betabound, many ''standalone'' features of it can be independently selected from separate mods. So if you only want to use the Radios you can download strictly that part of the mod and nothing else.
Betabound in my opinion adds a lot of useless bloat that doesn't necessarily contribute to a good experience in my opinion.

Before I move on to my main response to your comments, I want to make it absurdly clear that what I'm about to say should not be interpreted as me trying to invalidate your points regarding Betabound. Actually, I'd say it's better to also discuss these points with the mod's creator, Silver Sokolova, if you haven't done so already.
Yes, it's true that Betabound has its problems, weapon balancing being key among them. Yes, it's true that much of what Betabound adds is stuff that got deprecated and/or replaced when 1.0 released. I still picked it over mods like Shellguard and FFS for this video because I was looking for a mod that would give an "enhanced vanilla" experience while still adding a wide variety of content to to the game. Something that I would consider an entry point to larger, more substantial mods, and something that wasn't as overwhelming as Frackin Universe. At the time I made this video, I felt that Betabound fit that bill well enough. Your comments have gotten me to reconsider that. Don't get me wrong, I still love Betabound and don't really mind things like the balance issues. It's just that... After reading your wall of text and being reminded that yeah, Betabound has some problems that could be massive dealbreakers depending on how you play Starbound, I'm not so sure I can recommend it as easily for newer players any longer. Sorry, Silver, if you're reading this. =\
As I've said time and time again, I *loved* Starbound during its early access days. Not saying that post-1.0 Starbound is a bad game, just that personally, I thought it was better when it was in early access. I still keep a copy of Enraged Koala on my computer, and I was on a massive beta Starbound kick at the time I made this. It's likely that 1-2 punch could've colored my thoughts regarding Betabound and what it brings to the table. And yes, Silver split off several of Betabound's features (ladders, radios, etc.) into their own mods. Probably should've mentioned that in the video. Whoops.
Honestly, I feel like if I had any proper experience with Maple32, I would've picked it over Betabound in regards to recommending a Starbound mod to newer players that gives an "enhanced vanilla" experience without being too overwhelming. I may make a 2023 edition of this video that replaces Betabound with Maple32 depending on how my thoughts and opinions about it shake out.
You could say I'm writing all this and even pinning your comments to remind myself that I really, *REALLY* need to try out Maple32 at some point and even give it its own video.

One question: What do you mean by Betabound's weapons corrupting loot pool? Does it mean they overwrite every other loot wherever they can appear or have a much higher chance of spawning, making other items much more rare, or did you mean something else?

Sorry, I should choose my words better. What I mean is that you'll be finding Betabound weapons quite often, and not the more vanilla balanced weapons (or weapons related to other mods). When you open a chest, it rolls through a possible pool of loot, so the idea is that having betabound weapons in that ''pool'' makes it dirty if you plan to ignore them.

@cronnoponno Hi! I upgrade the weapons before adding them back in, so they've have their stats adjusted for vanilla and the broadswords can combo, have alt abilities, etc. Their damage is reduced slightly to compensate for the projectiles, which use a fraction of the weapon's main damage. I've tested the mod with FU and there doesn't seem to be a difference in power due to Betabound's numbers being based on vanilla's.
Betabound's weapons don't "corrupt" the lootpools. Its weapons spawn in weapon chests, like weapons do. Adding anything to a lootpool reduces the chances of getting something else from it since there are more options, and one of the tweaks I did last week was reducing weapon spawn rates (the update with the tweak isn't out yet, but it should be out sometime this month)
A lot of what Betabound adds is subtle compared to other mods-- Betabound content doesn't have a massive "THIS IS FROM BETABOUND" flag on it, for example. It adds a lot more than weapons, too, such as techs, quests, food recipes, new tool recipes, ship enhancements (things like upgrading your fuel tank, non-FTL speed, and fuel efficiency! Craftable at the Robotic Tool Table by using moonstone ore. Unavailable when FU is installed because FU breaks `player.upgradeShip` by spamming it every update cycle, undoing changes made by other mods), new tenants, etc
Is it possible that you're using mods that change the way weapons are scaled? I'm super interested in feedback!! What are some of the other issues you have with it?
For Sutekh, I'm super happy that you covered one of my mods in your videos!! Thank you so much! It adds a ton of subtle things and I'm always looking for ways to improve it. I'd love it if you gave the mod a second chance since I've updated it in ways that make its content feel more integrated with vanilla, such as making Betabound food rot and craftable at the vanilla cooking station and giving its broadswords combos. I usually update it once a month! There's no need to be sorry for sharing your opinion either!!
Edit: I also made a Lagless Pixel Printer mod! Unlike the other ones on the workshop, mine actually stays true to what the Pixel Printer is and **doesn't** just replace it with a normal crafting station with every recipe unlocked, so you still have to scan stuff to print it! Plus, it works with all mods, since it relies on your scanned data rather than external files. I'm super interested in both of your feedbacks, so maybe you could join the Betabound Discord server? it's way easier for me to keep track of things there!
I also think Betabound can stand on its own even if you haven't played beta. A few months ago (unfortunately after you made this video), I revamped all the food, so Betabound foods just give normal buffs instead of beta versions (which was pretty silly and just confused people) and gave them new sprites, along with removing redundant ones! I'd love to hear your thoughts on Betabound if you try it again!!
Edit 2: I think I know why you were frustrated with the weapon damage values! The Betabound weapon buildscript seems to be exaggerating the damage values in the tooltip, so the player thinks they're higher than they actually are. I am investigating this and if I fix it, it will be in the next update (scheduled for this month)

Nice list, me and my friend are about to do a modded run.
We didn’t touch the game since 2017-2018, but played it back in beta days, when cold and hunger were a constant problem.
I remember when it was promised to have a specific food for every race, like humans obviously wouldn’t be able to eat Floran and Glitch food.
Sometimes I miss those pre-release days tbh.

It would be helpful to have links to the mentioned mods in the description to reach them easier, that aside, this is an incredibly helpful video!
I unfortunately tried Frackin' Universe for my first modded run (with my fellow Floran OC of course)
Dear lord. There is more stuff than it needs to and it's just really overwhelming, couple it up with unsatisfying amounts of grinding, and I'm a grindy person myself!
I'll definitely try these out with a fresh new save file and see what these other mods can offer me.

2 more Quality of Life Mods I'd recommend:
bk3k's inventory mod: The inventory is just way too fricken' small for my tastes. This gives you a much larger inventory size.
Hotbar Mod. I hate only having 6 hotbar slots. There's several of these around, and they go up to 20 buttons. I map the first 10 to 0 through 9 and the second row I click for stuff like building blocks and other seldom-used items that don't need to be chosen during battle.

I wasn't too interested in modding my starbound, aside from finding some "performance balance" mod to remove these horrendous freezes the game has, such as the one you have at 3:15. Though since you're familiar with mods and still have those performance issues I guess there is no way to have a properly working game. I mean more content is really great but if It's to experience the same BS I think I'm gonna drop the game once again. Such potential this game has, and that's cool there's still people at it, but god damn I don't know how to keep up with the game hitting the pause button mid fight...

    • @Sutekh94
      @Sutekh94  2 роки тому +2

It's true that there's only so much mods can do to handle issues like those. The thing is, mods cannot make changes to anything hard-coded into Starbound, like its engine, as unoptimized as it is. Its assets, stuff like its textures and sprites, are fair game for mods, however, and there are several mods that optimize assets, doing stuff like replacing textures and sprites with compressed versions. In my experience, though, many of these mods did little to nothing for me and/or wound up causing more problems than they solved, mainly mod conflicts.

Know this video is a bit older but was recommended this game and see it's on a really good sale for like 1 more day and trying to confirm some things. The description makes it sound like combat can be turned off or something and I haven't been able to find any confirmation of this. I really don't care for combat in games much anymore so am wondering if you know if this is true, or if maybe there's a mod that will do this - or make me invincible at least, like I have set in SDV lol Thanks!

    • @Sutekh94
