You should never pull someone up off the ground after an accident....can do more damage...knew someone who was moved and landed up paralyzed. Hope the guys ok!
Year bit difficult that one as he could have been saying get me up so he would know perhaps himself to what extent he was injured but of course fractures can have different degrees of pain levels, can't reaaly know for sure without sound but your correct it must be done with ease slowly checking rotation and mobility first. Lowish risk of neck coller here though due to mechanics of injury and witnised history of how it was obtained.
These people put their lives on the line collecting the crap we toss away. Please respect them by slowing down and giving them space. Hope he recovers soon.
How about he LOOKS before moving out into oncoming traffic! This is a matter of H&S taught before he can go live at work for the first time! How can he of signed-off for his H&S training when he behaves in such an irresponsible manner? Truly avoidable had he adhered to right & proper H&S training & LOOKED! Speaking of looking: you can see at 12s into the video he just waltzes out into the road like a moron giving the van driver zero opportunity to react regardless of speed ergo the blame here stops with the binman!!!
Yeah you always give peeps space when passing them. They could be wearing earphones and step out. (know of two runners who've, separately, done this and died) Always expect the unexpected. One of the above drivers did time for drug driving... she ran out but he failed the blood tests!
@@ChrisPatrick-q6k Yeah... this guy will learn a lesson here as the injured guy wash working. I did this job on a temporary basis with an employment agency back in 2008. I can tell you it is very dangerous at times and you have to be very aware of your surroundings. It was job and knock and they were a good bunch of lads. Very sad to see this and hope he was ok.
Yes, I think it is a tough job as well. This is clearly a very domestic street where you would not be expecting fast moving vehicles. Plus the lorry is noisy, you would not necessarily hear traffic coming. Cannot see how people are blaming the poor bin guy.🤕
@@simonjones7727 Thanks for the reply. I remember stupidly on occasions having a few beers night before and not been 100% aware. Such a horrible accident could have happened to me especially when you don't know the area when you just start the job.
@GodNotReal Like @storminboy I've done something similar in the past. The truck is noisy and you get into a sort of a rhythm. You're not really a pedestrian, you are a worker in that setting. The van driver must have seen the truck well ahead. He would know what goes on in and around a bin lorry. Bin men!
And the lesson here regardless of who’s fault it was.. if passing a lorry where somebody is working in a vulnerable position .. slow right down .. there’s no need to being driving this fast in a residential area anytime, but especially so, given the circumstances. Hope everyone was ok
Whilst the van driver is at fault it would have also been prevented if the bin man had looked before crossing the street. Some people won't value your life as much as you do, keep your eyes open. In the same vein though don't speed around where people are working like this.
That is where you call an Ambulance. While there may not be that much evidence of injury at the time, the effects of adrenaline stop you from being aware of all the damage done. If this lad has to have time off later (potentially some months, given the highly physical nature of his job), but has not properly reported the accident, it may well have repercussions for him later. I was knocked off my bike when I was 15. No obvious problems at the time, and I picked up my bike and rode on. A month later I had severe pain in my lumber, which culminated in the muscles seizing up so I could barely walk. I had back problems for several years until an Osteopath found the reason.
But it not a Ambulance job ,he's conscious and on his feet ,get him a lift to AE if he needs it ,it's not life or death ,there is enough strain on the ambulance service.
@@sopissedoff The issue here is more a matter of covering yourself for possible future issues arising from the accident. Any whiplash or spine injuries may not be immediately apparent. If you are checked out by an ambulance crew, you can put that in an accident report for your employer. If you fail to report it, and did not get checked out, good luck getting you treatment paid for, if subsequently needed. Insurers will use any trick to avoid paying out. If you make a claim later, they can say the injury was from another cause, not the one you are claiming for. Regrettably it is all about the paper work. That, and some folks making claims for non-existent injuries, like the whip-lash claims that some law firms want you to make, even when you did not contact them! Ask a paramedic what they think after watching this clip. Also, who takes him to A&E? The Refuse Truck?
Quite right. The impact caused by the speed and the weight of that van was enough to cause serious injury; the guy should NOT have been moved before being checked. @@coniow
Same problem with roadside workers, even when there's proper signage, temporary traffic lights etc. Years ago I worked for the Electricity Board. It was a nightmare when vehicles just didn't slow down when we were working at the side of the road. I always slow to a crawl when passing garbage trucks and roadworks. The van was going far too fast. It's not as though it was invisible.
@@ChrisPatrick-q6k so you slow down every time you pass someone on a footpath next to the road? And you ignored my point that he should've looked before stepping into the road. Two wrongs don't make a right.
Why were they trying to get the Loader up on his feet? He should stay down whilst the ambulance and police are called, as he will be in shock and may not think he is injured, but could well be. I have driven dustcarts and had loaders hit by cars. The van was going way too fast and I think the police, given this video evidence, would be charging the driver with reckless or dangerous driving. Working on the bins is classed as one of the most dangerous of jobs, this is one of the reasons why.
See the van driver evaluating how much damage he'd done, while rushing through a residential area. He wasn't concerned about the person he'd injured, but how much trouble he could potentially have been in. This type of person will never learn, as long as they can get away with it.
The person that didn’t seem to learn, was the guy who walks out into traffic without looking left and right. Apparently he don’t learn that as a kid. There’s nothing to have to get away with, if people actually use their brain.

@@prog3142 he would have been hit regardless. Look at where he was standing while operating the machinery and then look at the gap between the van and the lorry. There is literally no way he wasn't going to get hit and he has a barrier to his other side stopping him from standing behind the lorry as you're not supposed to stand under the bins as they sometimes fall off the lifts.
@@anids1988 I mean clearly you’re the type of person that doesn’t know how to look left and right when walking into a part of the road where vehicles drive past. You’re trying to make comparisons between a bus and a bin lorry, where people do the job day in and out and are aware of motorists overtaking at all kind of speeds, as they’re constantly working in the road. The onus is on them to protect themself and not think because people shouldn’t be speeding I’m just going to walk out without looking lmao!! Because that makes total sense 🤣 The bin lorry left enough space for vehicles to pass, therefore he didn’t have to squeeze round any lorry. I guarantee you most bin men who use their brain don’t assume and actually look where they’re going and that’s the reason’s accidents like this aren’t common. Regardless if the driver was doing 5,10,15 or even 20mph, if he had CHECKED he wouldn’t have been struck by the van and that is the MAIN point simple minded people like you don’t seem to understand. I don’t think you should be doing your class 1 test, become a bin man instead. It’s a miracle how some people have lived as long as they have, when they think you can just walk out into traffic without looking and there will be no consequences 🤔 The bin man has learnt his lesson I’m sure and will look in future before risking his life again!
The refuse truck driver was positioned so traffic was unable to pass, this is a common way of collecting on narrow roads so loaders can work both sides of the road at once. It is safer for the crew. The van driver obviously frustrated attempted to pass and use the pavement. Van driver needs to be prosecuted.
@user-zc9xl4ne3u I think you’re spot on with why this is a poor method of working. You get frustrated drivers doing daft things, reduce working space for the bin guy who had hardly any space to turn and check for oncoming vehicles (he didn’t stand a chance to turn and see that van), and you put pedestrians at risk, as the impatient drivers speed past either closer to or on the path. It’s an interesting theory to protect workers and increase productivity but it has its own risks. Hope this feller recovers ok and the van driver learns from this experience.
The same happened to me when I used to work on the highways gangs. The driver said in court that I was larking about and swinging off the wing mirror of the truck and I swung into him! No remorse whatsoever from him but the judge saw right through his lies and awarded me a significant compensation claim. I was off work for 3 months with torn ligaments in my knee and ankle and cracked ribs.

100% the van drivers fault. In fact the wagon was parked over the middle of the road, the bin worker was actually already stood in the other side of the road as he operated the .machine' and his only 'mistake' was that he walked before turning to see if anything was coming - but based upon where he was stood you'd kinda assume nothing was.

Used work as a truck driver, 18T with taillift. Used to get the same thing while taking fully loaded pallets of the back of the truck. People would get real close with their cars even though they could see a guy struggling to drag a 1 tonne pallet across the road. Folk should just slow down when approaching trucks, especially when you can see someone working at the back.
Yes the van was going way to fast, also the refuge guy never really checked he took a step into the side of the van. The van driver should have been paying more attention as the refuge guy was in vulnerable position. I do blame the van driver.
As a former bin man you are told to step back from the back and of coarse look whatever side you are at for traffic, but i will say the van was driving very fast
Complete lack of anticipation/reaction from the van driver and travelling too fast for the situation, he should of known the binman was at work and going to move. 95% drivers fault.
There's only so much you can do, the driver took a primary position on a road that is narrowed to make it clear it is not safe to pass. However, there's always someone dumb enough to try pass and at speed!

Van was absolutely going too fast. You see someone standing there, working, you should be slowing to a near crawl as you approach the truck and worker.
100% the van driver's fault. Going too fast and attempting an overtake when there wasn't enough room to do so safely. And it's hard not to see him when he's wearing hi-viz clothing.

Lots to this ... looks really simple and probably still is but... 1) the collection vehicle is stood in a position that encourages traffic to try and "squeeze through". 2) The hit worker basically walks into the "squeeze through" area without looking either way. 3) the offending vehicle seems to be a bit too heavy with the loud pedal.

Granted, the bin man was careless but the van driver didn't allow for that possibility. He was driving too fast and he neglected his duty of care for a much more vulnerable road user. Bins on the side of the road are always a good warning to drivers that there is likely to be a bin lorry somewhere in the area. Being mindful of your speed and how you take corners is the key to avoiding incidents like this. Something drivers should be doing all the time regardless of the area you are in. One thing I learned is ALWAYS be on the lookout for pedestrians and road workers, regardless of if you are on a residential street, motorway, duel carriageway, anywhere. The things I have seen some pedestrians do, it always pays to be super aware wherever you are.

Yes, I think it is a tough job as well. This is clearly a very domestic street where you would not be expecting fast moving vehicles. Plus the lorry is noisy, you would not necessarily hear traffic coming. Cannot see how people are blaming the poor bin guy.🤕

@GodNotReal Like @storminboy I've done something similar in the past. The truck is noisy and you get into a sort of a rhythm. You're not really a pedestrian, you are a worker in that setting. A lesson for both parties
I think you are clearly laying the blame on the driver, which is right.
The binman just needs to be more aware of his surroundings
Whilst the van driver is at fault it would have also been prevented if the bin man had looked before crossing the street.

The bin man has learnt his lesson I’m sure and will look in future before risking his life again!
The refuse truck driver was positioned so traffic was unable to pass, this is a common way of collecting on narrow roads so loaders can work both sides of the road at once. It is safer for the crew. The van driver obviously frustrated attempted to pass and use the pavement. Van driver needs to be prosecuted.
spot on, except he did not use the pavement though!
@user-zc9xl4ne3u
I think you’re spot on with why this is a poor method of working.

The things I have seen some pedestrians do, it always pays to be super aware wherever you are.
I also find a huge great BIN LORRY is also a good warning that there's likely a bin lorry in the area 🤣 The driver of that Van is a menace to the roads. If it'd been a kid stepping out from either side of the bin lorry he'd have probably killed it...bin lorry or not, nobody should be driving that fast on a narrow residential road. You know he drives like that every day and probably continues to do so, no matter how many close shaves or lives he takes...

"I also find a huge great BIN LORRY is also a good warning that there's likely a bin lorry in the area 🤣"
Spot on!
@@caeserromero3013 It actually does this in driving theory, in the UK anyway. Shows you a road lined with bins, and asks you a no brainer as to what you should look out for on that road lol. Some drivers really are that dumb though, the van driver in the video wanted banning.
@@caeserromero3013 Also the van man would have seen bins on other streets before he actually met the bin lorry, so he shouldn't have been going that fast either.
@@thewr0ngchild Nobody uses logic or forward thinking these days unfortunately. And not just drivers. I saw a near miss a few years back on a main road not far from a school. A kid was looking to cross the road and the car coming along in the opposite direction to me stopped to let the kid cross, so I stopped also. After a couple of seconds hesitation, the kid then went to step out into the road, just as a cyclist sped past the stationary car on the inside. Literally millimetres from making contact with the kid. I now ride a Boris bike to work in Central London 2 days a week. The other week I stopped to let a pedestrian cross on a Zebra. As the guy is walking across, two bikes overtake me and nearly run down the pedestrian, a 3rd manages to skid to a halt and as they do so, another bike crashes right up the back of them. Even when they see a Zebra with people CROSSING, they still don't think to slow down...
This nearly happened to me but i was stepping out the passenger door to step onto the pavement. And a car was trying to wedge it self past the bin wagon. I went mental.
This has never happened to me, you know why, because I look both ways before stepping into traffic
@timk.3286 if you read the comment properly I was stepping into a pavement/ sidewalk out of a wagon. Learn to read and understand the comment yourself. Before you start acting the clever dick.
@@timk.3286 I don't drive like a prick.
Van driver was not sorry at all. There is no way he should have gone past the lorry that fast for that very reason.
the fella starts to walk a split second earlier and he is dead!
The van wasn't going that fast it stopped on a dime but he could've gone a little slower yet the bin man stepped out before he turned his head to look.
The bad respect on the roads today us scary. You see it all the time, disgusting. I hope the bin man is ok.
I used to be a binman in London, so plenty of traffic and plenty of near misses. Yes, the van driver, as everyone has mentioned, is going too quick. However, some blame has to be placed on the loader for not being aware of his surroundings. The same way as when I'm crossing the road, I always look to see if there's traffic approaching, I never stepped out from behind the wagon without checking.
100% agree.... Van driver should have driven more cautiously and a lot slower... but the bin man should never step out into a road without looking.
Gotta give it to the worker he took the van to face like at champ. Joking aside hope he's OK.
Hah i am
@@pauldavies1102Happy for you mate, personally I think I would have been more inclined to shove f-kwit onto lifting lugs and hoisted him into the bin then hit the compactor button. Guess what? No more speeding down side streets from aforementioned f-kwit.😂😂😂
Hope you get some compensation
@pauldavies1102 no way didn't know it was yiu glad your ok man I'm a bin man (18 years) and that video made me cringe I thought you was about to take a bin to the face lol hope you are more careful now the van was going way to fast not your fault at all but you have to assume everyone on the road is out to get you and be extra careful. Meh no need for lecture it could happen to me on the wrong day 😢 anyways proper buzzing that your ok. Good man 😊😊😊
@@pauldavies1102 if that is you, then you need some education before going back out, i am sure you learned this at the age of 5, look before you step out into traffic. problem solved
That was that van driver thinking
When I pass a bin lorry I only go at 5mph, no need to fly by it at 40mph.
How the hell did the van driver not see the bin man? And then he moves him after hitting him with his van. Obviously to get the man walking around hoping he won't be in trouble. Clearly going to fast. He should be prosecuted. I hope the bin man is OK 👍
I think he did see him but the bin guy steps right out in front of the van not even looking to the sides..
And speeding im not so sure, look at the breaking distance its very short
And why is the bin truck in the middle of the road? It should be close to the curve to protect the workers..
What a bastard, why would you go that fast through a blind tight space with a worker right next to you? Really deserves a licence revoke.
A child or dog or cat could have easily been in front of that truck too.
Total bastard.
Exactly mate... He was actually overtaking.. IE he saw bin lorry and men working, no idea what was coming in the opposite direction ..but decided not to wait and try the gap, absolutely bastard manoeuvre...
There are literally thousands of drivers like this muppet on the road, we are all at the mercy of their recklessness
@@ChrisPatrick-q6k LOL!
Van driver was probably a builder. They can't see over the mound of junk on their dashboard!
Ffs. Van driver should catch a charge for that.
I work on on and near roads all the time...im surprised that hasnt happened to me, at the same time though i always look before just moving as people are absolute nutjobs while they are in their car.
exactly, something we all learn at the age of 5, look before crossing.
@@timk.3286Stop. Look. Listen. It isn't difficult but I do see it ignored all the time.
I hope the guy is okay
Yes I agree the van driver going way too fast. He could have killed the guy.
So if the van was go soooo fast how did it stop within 5ft without skidding??? 12mph max.
@@ChrisPatrick-q6k don’t be silly the bindrager ran into the van, if the van ran into him the van would have hit the back of the bin truck 🤪an other dick how likes to piss people off and doesn’t show their name what a wa⚓️
It annoys me how some people use the roads round an estate as a race track. My mum lives on a steet like that. The limits 30 but cars regularly drive at speed down the street.
The binman should've looked properly first, but that van was going way too fast for the conditions. Even if the binman wasn't there, a kid could've been crossing the road in front of the dustbin lorry without looking, and the van would've had no chance of braking in time. With a large lorry parked on the road like that, the van should've been going through at walking pace
Best summary I've read here. I agree. Regardless of whether the workers or any pedestrians are looking around properly, to go past something that blocks your view at such a speed was reckless.
No. The hazards are on for a reason. Also the binman is already on the road as the controls are on the side and the red flap prevents him from moving to behind the lorry.
It’s the van drivers fault
The Van driver was clearly speeding, clearly blind as he didn't notice the HiViz jacket and can't judge scale or distance whatsoever!
I hope he gets sued by the County and the victim for any damages, let alone the trauma that man will suffer, wilful ignorance at its best, God knows what his worst could be, 🤬👎
This is not the USA 'buddy' . . .
The van driver should of anticipated that that could happen .
Here in the states it against the law to pass a service vehicle like that His ass would have been arrested
I'm a professional driver and i witness bad driving most of my working day. Why the rush to speed past a bin wagon? Just sit and wait until its clear and you get a wave from one of the workers.
Always wait for the stretcher, when asked “how are you”? just dribble 😂
The bin man walked into the path of an oncoming vehicle without looking, you take responsibility for your own actions.
And no, the van was not travelling "fast", as the van was able to come to a stop within approx 5 meters.
yeah he probably stoned the van driver get breathalysed will he get tested nope
Where else was he supposed to go? His left is blocked by the red safety flap, if he went backwards he would have still been hit, if he went forwards he would have still been hit, if he stayed exactly where he was he would have still been hit.
Poor guy 😢i hope his ok!🙏
That van driver is in the sh*t for this one
Van driver must have been double busy, to be going that fast.
When I was a kid , our next door neighbour worked on the council dustcarts , as he moved from the rear of the wagon, he was struck by a speeding car and died later of a major head injury .
🤣🤣🤣
Yow, I really hope the guy's OK and the driver was prosecuted.
