God, I love dodie so much.
When I read her book is when I really started to feel emotionally attached to her. Looking back it was like one BIG deep talk. Like the good type of deep talk that really changes your way of thinking and how you feel towards that person. She spoke about things no one ever talked to me about, things that I was scared of, things that made me insecure. One big example was her talk about sexual intercourse. I was so scared because I didn't know how it worked, what to do, felt like I don't know how to act "sexy".
Dodie taught me that it's actually awkward and kinda funny, not serious and stressful as I anticipated and also that it's important to talk about sex with your partner to make clear what they like, and not and so on. Now I feel less scared about sex, feel a little more confident and love myself more! Secret for the mad helped me so much and I am deeply thankful for dodie to have talked all those things intimate things most people are too scared to talk about. I wish I could put it better in words but all I know is that it did so much for me and I'd dare to say one of my most valuable possessions as it never fails to make me feel better.
Her music always makes me feel understood, calm or hopeful. The song that stuck spoke most to me was and is "Party Tattoos".
This song makes me feel like I shouldn't give a damn about anyone's opinion or if it's a stupid idea or not, because stupid ideas are breeding ground for the best memories! Memories you can look back to.
Memories that will life feel like it was worth living. And that thought makes me feel like it will be okay, maybe not now but somewhere in the future and that all the stupid decisions I do now (and I am making lots) will be something I look happily look back to, as something that made me grow and as something that resulted into a great memory.
I recently turned 18 and it made me so happy because now I was finally able to engrave my favourite part of the lyrics "we're not bruised, they're just party tattoos!" onto my skin. I hope that it'll give me courage to get over myself and make more stupid decisions to make experiences, grow and become a better person!
Dodie gives me so much more will to live and not give up and I love her so much for it.

Really appreciate you watching the interview - it's one of our favorites so far. Very vulnerable and informative about what it means to be obsessed and turn it into your selling point. Did you get a chance to watch the Hot Seat?

i've been watching dodie for a while, and i don't say this because i want people to know how long i've been "her fan" or whatever but because for the longest time, i put her on a pedestal of "perfectness", anything she did could never be wrong in my eyes, but watching this interview has shown me just how human she is, the relateability that brough me to like her in the first place.
when you idolize a person for so long, you strive to become more like them, but so often do we only see the performer/perfect side of them that when we fall in our own journeys, we beat ourselves up about it because "dodie would never do that". but hearing these things come from dodie, her being vulnerable and showing us how much it is okay to not be okay allows us to allow ourselves to make these mistakes as we grow.
sorry for the ramble-iness of this comment. there's a lot that i feel here that i don't quite know how to put into words :)

The Anxious Elefant Your note really inspires us. We just started the Rare Breed series a few months ago. Each season, we sit down with 7 cultural provocateurs who embody one of the 7 so-called “vices” that society says we shouldn’t be and we reframe it as a virtue. In Dodie’s interview, the virtue is Obsessed. What you said about the questions and how we are listening, really struck a chord with us. So glad you picked up on that. It’s intentional because we want to give a floor to the guest but also allow each of us at the table room to hear one another. Thank you for such a wonderful feedback!
If you can, check out some of the other interviews. We’ve interviewed Charlamange tha God, Jon Batiste and about to release an episode with comedian and queer advocate Gaby Dunn. Thanks for subscribing :)

@@rarebreedtv i checked the other videos out and they're all so nicely conducted! usually interviews make me terribly anxious because the anxiety of the artist interviewed transfers to me somehow, but this is a beautiful and well needed format! it actually manages to make me sit still on my bum for a while hah.
the rare breeds whose 'difference' makes them special and therefore drives art forward.. i love it. truly, keep up, you're doing some wonderful work!

oh my god. i've just had the worst month i've had in a while. instead of processing my monstrous thoughts i've just been sitting in them, no doubt taking a toll on my parents. i had no idea i'm obsessed with my mental illness, letting it consume me. this isn't the first time dodie has helped me through a hard time, and i feel as if it wont be the last.
thank you. you have done more than i have ever expected. :''')

I've loved Dodie for a long time. When I saw her live for the first - and only - time, I cried when hearing other people sing her songs. I felt like they got me through so much and were so personal to me and I know its silly, but hearing others sing that made me cry. My point is, in this interview, she says her biggest demon is the need to feel special. Although there is a long way to tackling demons and obsessions, I just want to say that Dodie is incredibly special to me as I've grown up listening o her whilst battling abuse, anxiety, depression and self-harm. So though it may not be worth anything, Dodie you are special in other peoples' hearts even if you can't recognise it yourself

I am a puddle. This was so calming and so eye-opening, so therapeutic! What a way with words you all have. As an almost 30 year old who grew up constantly being told they were "obsessive" "trying too hard to be different" "too hard to love", I was ashamed of these things. The idea of a "rare breed" and taking back these traits and using them to help you go further instead of stuffing them down fearfully is mind blowing to me. I truly think any creative mind has a touch of these traits and they can be SO useful in processing the "different" way I think we see things and the world. Before I would be afraid that sounds "pretentious" but it's just the truth. You are not trying to be different, its the way your brain reads and reacts to the world thats different. Using that to create cool shit is the ultimate "screw you" to all those years you felt so stuck and insecure about those traits that were assigned to you.
I am so in love with this interview, thank you all!

Amelia, this is so beautiful to read and we're so happy to hear you enjoyed the video. We also have a book by the same title that goes deep into the seven traits society deems as counterintuitive to your success. We have a whole chapter on being Obsessed and why it's a powerful tool, how to use it and when it can be destructive. Hope you stick around for more episodes and if you're interested in the book, if you follow us on Instagram @thisisrarebreed and DM us your address, we'll send you a free copy.

I am saddened that Dodie often thinks of herself as disgusting. Wherever this negative and destructive thought comes from, it's so not true! She is a lovely, precious, talented young woman who needs to see herself in this positive light. I am impressed by her musical and songwriting talent, but also by her as a wonderful human being. If I were her dad I wold be so proud of her.

I saw Dodie's show in October of this year and honestly I've never had an experience like it. Sure, I've been to other concerts before and had some good times but there's something different about seeing people sing along and listen to this person singing about these really heavy feelings with smiles on their faces. I've been a fan of dodie since about 2015 and one of the many things I love about her is not only her vulnerability and openness with her audience but also her ability to be so self aware. Yes, it takes a lot to be open for millions of people but I think it takes even more to be able to be honest about all of the things you struggle with, and how those struggles affect you. Dodie has helped me through a lot, and I've loved seeing her grow throughout these past few years.
