This is the first time I've ever heard anyone talk about arm length & the swing, I've mentioned this but have never found any information. Great video.
Tom, another great topic and an even better explanation of how arm length affects your swing. More than anything your videos help me understand the 'why' in golf that wasn't getting addressed by asking my buddies. They could tell me that I needed to hit 'down' on the ball with my irons but they could not tell me why or even what hitting down really meant! Thanks for your time and dedication to helping us get better, salute!
Tom! I don't think I have ever seen an explanation on how the length of the arms determine one's swing plane. Your explanation and demonstration was excellent! Being of average height and arm length, my swing plane would be such as yours. Good Job Tom! Keep up the good work!!
Very true. Been playing for 17 years and I have long arms and even back when I played in high school I remember trying a Jim Furyk type swing in a match with a 4 iron and flushed it. My swing thoughts even up till now are high hands which always works for me. Just need to work on how to stay down at impact better due to my longer legs as well and shorter torso.
This is something that I have unconsciously been correcting and misunderstanding for years now. I have long arms and been so frustrated that I couldn’t swing on plane like Tiger and other pros. This also explains why I hit so many more fades. This is maybe the most important lesson I’ve ever had. Thank you!
Very good explanation of mike adams arm length now let’s look at arm to forearm length and front middle or back pivots ,you make it very easy to understand thank u in advance fro New Zealand
Hi Chris, I think this would be like Da Vinci has made his painting… equally lengths. But that wouldn’t be nice to the others! So everyone is perfect in his own way.
No one has ever mentioned about this to me before. Interesting. And, I do have a tendency to have a slightly shallower backswing; my arm length is shorter than my height. Good stuff! Thanks, Tom!
is there a link between having one arm slightly longer than the other and it's effect on low point? for example does someone with a longer right arm tend to need to move the ball position back in their stance?
I’m 185cm with 200cm wingspan and I go very high in the backswing. Will definitely take this into account from now when ppl advise me to go shallow. Are long arm a advantage or disadvantage in golf? I’ve always thought it’s a disadvantage.
Hey J Henry, wonderful to read your story and question, I am sure that long arms have a big advantage in making a swing because the arc is longer and you need less energy to make speed. Enjoy it
@@Weplaygolfnah I am not so sure . But you have to adapt to shorter arms or longer arms . Hogan had flat swing -Shorter arms golfer should have more clubs which is Upright !!! It's more difficult with longer arms for the brain to control them than shorter arms . 🙏
Do you think shorter arms equate to a slower swing? I have shorter arms and I'm trying speed training and my driver speed is about 92 at its best giving full effort. If I make a more easy swing with 2/3 power it's around 75 to 80
So true-- I have short arms and cannot swing upright-- no way-- I was measured and they were saying I could use clubs that were 1 inch longer????? Great video!!!!
Hello Darell, thanks for your message, I can imagine that you have been very successful doing so and yes that’s a perfect way to get a steeper angle of attack to the ball with your irons 👍and by doing so get more compression on the ball, do rotate towards the finish at all time 😉
Hi Tom, I’m 177cm with an armspan of 190cm. I have the perpetual problem that no matter what I do on the backswing, my arms raise late, the club is way inside, and then I come back over the top. I’ve had lessons form 10 different pros, and none of them can fix it. I’ve managed to get down to a handicap of 6 with this swing, but I hate it. I like to keep connected and compact on the backswing, otherwise I feel no control. When I raise my hands high, the over the top move seems to almost go, and the ball flies for miles (185 yard 7 iron carry versus 150 with compact swing), but it feels totally disconnected and out of control, and the elbow flies. It just doesn’t seem right to me. Any thoughts? Should I persevere with keeping the arms high?
Hi Robert Edwards, Thanks for your message and question about your swing plane caused by your arm span length. I suggest that you send us a video of your swing to see what you do, but how I understand it, I would start the swing plane very upright by using the wrist and hand action earlier in the take away so that the body will stay in balance throughout the backswing. The upright arm swing plane will give you more stability and give you something like a Jim Furyk lookalike move with a flying right elbow position. From this position you will be able to drop the club on the inside to cover the ball at impact 👍 Swing with a reverse grip to feel this position 👊🏻
What if one has broad shoulders but short arms? This person could have a long wing span but also short arms. This describes me. How should this guy swing?
But you didn't mention the proportions of the upperarms Vs Forearms - Length. People with longer upperarms vs theirs forearms should swing more vertical says.... It's a lot of variables...
Actually they say the opposite -Hogan was short (5 7 with long arms ) He had a flat swing . Shorter arms (T Rex build ) long legs gain from Upright golf clubs and swing path .🤔
I think the opposite of what he says is true If your arms are longer relative to your body your wrist to floor will be lower You won't be able to do a steep swing without running out of room
This is too generalized. Dispersion on arm length and distance to floor also matters. Two people with the same height and arm lengths can have completely different angles of attack. Long legs vs long torso. WTF measurement is a more important factor then arm length.
Are your arms as long as your body or longer or shorter? Let me know!
My arm span is 6'2" and I'm 5'8"... I'm very upright.
My arms are much shorter. My coach hates me
My arm span is 6’ 1” and I’m 5’ 10”.
Arms lomger

Thank you for your kind comment! Have a great game of golf next time!
Nice to read your Reaction on this video, have a nice day
Your best video IMO. Resonates with some reading I have done.
Thanks Robyn!
Good one.

It's true John, I couldn't find much about this topic on UA-cam either! Greetings from Belgium!
As a T-rex I am fucked then.
Try upright clubs they say ,Hogan was short with long arms -that suits flatter swing

Thanks for the brilliant ideas.. You the best

what is a good / normal ratio? Same length in arms and body?
Hi Chris, I think this would be like Da Vinci has made his painting… equally lengths. But that wouldn’t be nice to the others! So everyone is perfect in his own way.
Great vid. Assume yiu believe in mike Adams’ approach to the grip? I was measured and now play a weaker right hand grip
No one has ever mentioned about this to me before. Interesting. And, I do have a tendency to have a slightly shallower backswing; my arm length is shorter than my height.
Good stuff! Thanks, Tom!
Thank you Matt, hope this helps you with improving your game!
Thank you for this great video !
Thanks!
Great content! I’m glad that the UA-cam algorithm directed me to here.
Welcome to the channel! We have over 300 interesting and short golf videos, so enjoy!

This also affects the right hand grip. It affected me for years since I had long arms.
what was it before? what is it now? whatg rip is better for long arms and a high swing
This is why we do club fitting and adjust the club length and lie to the Player’s swing and size. He can then swing the way he wants.
6 3 with longish arms at 57 years old .To compress my irons i seem to have success with a open stance and ouþside takeaway. Thoughts

Wow. I have very short arms. Did not know this.
How about if i extremely abnormally wide shoulders from swimming 20 years, but short arms and a long torso and short legs
I have short arms and prefer the fade.
But you didn't mention the proportions of the upperarms Vs Forearms - Length. People with longer upperarms vs theirs forearms should swing more vertical says.... It's a lot of variables...
I just measured. I am 71 inches tall. My arm span is way shorter... 64 inches. Damn. Now I know why my distance sucks.
I am 65”tall and have a 72” arm span.
