Plein Air Painting with Gouache and Oil Paint in Kent England

  • In this latest adventure, we take a break from the busy streets of London to paint the tranquil rolling hills of Kent. Without a cloud in sight and barely a hiker to be seen for hours, we were able to take our time and tackle two different scenes in two different mediums. Nate brought the gouache and I brought the oil paints. So much fun to see the difference between the two of them unfold. We hope you enjoy!

      It totally is. ( this is Nate here) I work in animation for my day job and have been for a long time, so I’m at a computer all day. I listen to a ton of ambient sounds and music but dude, your is the best by far. Every sound is perfect. I also have anxiety and stopped drinking 5 years ago and once I stopped drinking, I started painting. I am trying to go from doing animation full time, to painting full time so I relate to what you are trying to do. You are doing some seriously amazing work and I hope nothing but the best for you.

      @@paintingwithlindseyandnate8007 Jesus, man. Your comment is so uplifting. I'm happy for you, that you know what you want, and you relating to me is a DITO from my part :) I'm happy you have a plan. It makes it a lot easier and is worth the hard work. It seems like your channel is accumilating some view quite fast, which is good. Just over half a year you've gotten quite some attention and subs. I am fairly sure you will reach your goals, eventually. It's a slow process this thing, and I think that is good, so you get the time to appreciate every step on the way. It is an experience booster for sure. I don't know why, but I really connected with you guys. Your energy I think. My best wishes for you both. I'm happy for your comment. Will sub with my private account :)

      Thanks man! Listened to you work again almost all day. It’s just perfect to work to. Thanks for the kind words. We started this UA-cam channel for fun and hope to keep it that way. The goal is to put out vids as often as we can and not put too much pressure on ourselves. I passed your channel on to a few friends today so hopefully you get a few more subs!

    The nice part of painting there is the ability to have the permission to wander/roam without fear of being yelled at to leave a property. Beautiful landscapes.

    I enjoyed that painting trip to the country. Always hard in mid summer with all the green, both paintings look good but your second painting had the advantage of the a golden light on the right and the contrasting trees in the shadow on the left. I must give the gouache a go one day. Thank you.

    Thanks guys. Love this stuff. I often go over to Michael Chamberlain's videos, but I''ve subscribed to you now too. Sorry Michael. It's all good. I'm from the US and haven't seen your video yet where you explain how/why you got to Britain, but I'll eventually get to that one-if it exists. I live in California. Wish I'd done this when I was young by saving up and then launching out and making a living by uploading videos, etc. (although there weren't those kinds of opportunities back in the 80's with any digital world). I'm a landscape painter too (oils) and I often hear people talk about finding the ideal location for a composition, but since I'm more of a modern tonalist who prefers the intimate aesthetic/expressive tonalist landscape to the larger vistas, I see hundreds of paintings as you guys walk along paths and hills. :-)
    For example I'll see a small group of trees which provide overlapping shapes and I'll say: "There's my Inness, Murphy or Wolf Kahn landscape!" Hehe. There is too much to paint. I could literally stop your videos at almost any point and paint a landscape with interesting shapes. I think as artists, we are often tied to the picture before us, rather than creating from it. But that's just me. I do know that without inspiration, many artists won't be motivated.
    I see inspiration everywhere. And changing light doesn't bother me too much, since I have enough knowledge of light and shadow to use the shapes I see in front of me and "imagine" what that would look like with different lighting. And I love overcast lighting too. Get inspired by the shapes and then invent. We are not cameras. Or, as Nate has mentioned, just push the painting to what you see at any one moment-when the lighting changes. That's why I first establish the darks right up front with a big brush and wipe out negative shapes to create the overall composition or impression. The "big picture" is the most important part in my view. How does the painting read from across the room? That is the key. Getting the "big picture" quickly is especially useful when painting outdoors, but it is also useful when painting indoors too. I never start with a line drawing, but rather think in large abstract shapes-adding details as required. But everyone works differently. Thank you.

      Hey David! Nate here. Sorry for the delayed response. Thanks for taking the time to comment and leave your thoughts and insights. Lindsey and I are both good friends With Michael Chamberlain and I think he has by far the best painting channel around. I watch it all the time and get a lot of inspiration from Mike. He has such a great attitude about life and paintings.
      To give you our quick backstory, we moved to London from Oakland CA back in Nov. of 2019 ( a few months before the big Covid hit). I am an animator by day, so I took a job in London so that we could have an adventure and paint Europe. Although our travel plans have been limited, we are still enjoying exploring London and the surrounding area. In June we are going to explore and paint the Cotswolds which if you haven't heard of, you should look up. Its picturesque British countryside.
      I agree with you about finding hundreds of paintings as we walk around. That is the hard part about going out to paint, and I call it " plein air paralysis". When there is too much awesomeness and you can't make a decision... you have a bad case of plein air paralysis.

    Why can’t you match colors with gouache like you do with oil?

    • @paintingwithlindseyandnate8007
      @paintingwithlindseyandnate8007  3 роки тому +2

      I can get pretty close with gouache, but I can never quite get the exact color I’m looking at. This is partly because gouache dries so quickly when I’m mixing it that it doesn’t allow for me to keep working a color. This is a good thing for me though. It forces me to be more impressionistic with my color.

    So amazing... this geography could easily be Tennessee! I thought it was COLD in England this time of year?? And also, what do you do when you have to pee? So many questions. Wish I was there! Soooo good.

    • @paintingwithlindseyandnate8007
      @paintingwithlindseyandnate8007  3 роки тому +1

      Yeah, it’s waaaaay cold out now. We filmed this back in September when it was nice and warm. When nature calls, hopefully there is a toilet around somewhere, but most of the time you just hid behind a tree camping style. On all day trips I kind of dehydrated myself a bit so I’m not having to pee all the time. Not the best thing to do, but it’s better than being distracted all day by the bladder.

    Does painting in direct sunlight ever mess with your value system? I have only painted in direct light a couple times but usually I try to paint in shade or with an umbrella. It can be a pain though if it's too windy and you want to paint with the sun to your back.

    • @paintingwithlindseyandnate8007
      @paintingwithlindseyandnate8007  3 роки тому

      Hey Danny! Yes, painting in the direct sunlight does mess with values an it's is hard not to end up with a really dark painting. With Gouache its not as big of an issue becuase it naturally shifts in value as it dries. The ideal senerio is to paint with an umbrella, but I have found it to be difficult with a moderate about of wind.
