I love how, even though his rapping is extremely fast, you can still hear every word he is saying clearly. A lot of rappers loose the words as they get faster. Daveed does not. It's amazing.
I love the ending, the fact that they made it look fake intentionally with him imposed on an image of a street, rather than just put him on an actual road makes it so much more unsettling
It's kind of like they wear a guise of your typical gangster rap while pointing out how actually kind of awful street life is especially when it comes to violence. It's very interesting.
yeah, definitely. i'm still waiting on that kendrick feature in a clipping track or vice versa, especially since daveed got a ton of recognition from hamilton. their styles would work so well together, particularly kendrick's skill in voice modulation and daveed's rapid-fire yet concise wordplay.
It's unsettling to me how little movement there is, don't get me wrong, this is amazing and I love it, but usually in videos there's more going on, but the gradual bleeding and the chorus with his eyes open and the slow zoom in and out on his face (he's clearly shaking, even better) it's a bit creepy. I love it, it's a work of art.
It's him bleeding out on the floor after getting shot. The girl singing in the chorus is clearly an angel of death. That's why he looks unsettled and comforted at the same time.
It's all in connections and how they work the media. You can either be a 'celeb' through being trash and trying to be controversial, or take the long road and persevere with talent and skill and quality and be an artist.
How does this only have 136k views?! This is some of the most original, creative, and just magnificently-produced art I've heard and seen in a very long time. Not only this video, but every single one they've done. Fucking brilliant! PLEASE make a video for "Taking Off!"
It's brilliant. How Daveed tells the gangster narrative so graphically. He approaches the street life critically while being empathetic to it at the same time. Like "it's fucked up but you gotta understand why things are this way before demonizing it". Beautiful
This is too deep. Although I did come with the mindset of a depressive song, but I didn't expect the perspective to change from waking up to an alarm to another mundane, terrible day, to an electrocardiograph sound, because he was shot and left to die. I can't help but think of the reference to many of the police brutalities within the recent media, but I cannot infer this reference, as there was no mention of the police. However, with the existence of the electrocardiograph sound, I could interpret that it could be how a bullet wound is not treated because of how worthless the narrator's life is.
Spot on with the cyclic nature of the individual's life, but its not from the narrator's perspective, its as though he's is watching what's happening, and kinda giving his view on it. Plus, the album was released months ago, before the recent media outbreaks, i think the music video's kinda saying, 'i know this life will kill me, but i have to persevere, cuz its the only thing I've got going.'
I took the alarm clock to be the mundanity of a 9-5 job that's then warped into the same push and struggle of the daily grind of selling drugs that the narrator turned to after quitting doing normal work. The song demonstrates why someone might turn to crime, posturing itself as the narrator's daily motivation, but then shows why his expectations were flawed. He left his normal job for something with all the same problems and the minute he got caught up in the rat race of the streets he was already dead. The chorus is both his dying breath and his desire to be something that brought him there.
the alarm sound was bothering my dog (his logic: alarm = daddy leaves) but then when he saw that I wasn't leaving he calmed down and he started looking around for the person talking when daveed started rapping. cutest thing i've ever seen, tbh.
2:19 i really like this part of the music video because it’s like he’s almost going to heaven but they rejected him. plus if you notice how his pose is in the position of the white chalk outline guy.
He’s the Lea Salonga of rap... basically... Ig.... He’s good at enunciating every detail of a word where even if he’s rapping at such a high speed, every word is still audible
great example of how something conventionally sounding good is not always the best thing, the alarm being harsh and grating really hammers home the tone and message of what he's describing in a way that a normal beat wouldn't have
IDK who came up with this flow first but Kendrick Lamar has definitely found some inspiration is this type of pattern of rhythm. fast cuban like sextuplet fast rhymes
Got freaking goosebumps from listening to this work of art. You can tell they put a lot of work into the video such as being able to see the lady in his eyes. SO TALENTED
Almost two years ago, I remember setting up UA-cam on my uncles TV so he could watch without ads. He was dying of cancer at the time, passed away almost a year ago now. Seeing this video reminded me of a funny memory. This 74 year old man accidently got into my UA-cam account and stumbled his way into my liked videos. While going to sleep one night, this popped on in the playlist. Hearing him describe what he saw was so fucking funny, it took me a while to figure out what had happened. Good memories
Damn this guy owns. I was up late and I saw Work work. Never saw it before till then BUT DAMN!! You should be on top of the list. You have some mad SKILL!
Listen I get that alot of yall like Daveed Diggs and discovered him through Hamilton, but making everything he's ever done about Hamilton? Does his whole life revolve Hamilton now? Is that *all* he's ever done in his life? Some of y'all really need to learn to separate things. Hamilton has nothing to do with this vid, it is Digg's art, let it remain *Digg's art*. Passion for something is nice, but don't make it everything. *sigh*
cookycandy4 You bring up a good point here. It's awesome that clipping got a lot of recognition from Hamilton, but it's just the amount of comments on their music videos that are talking about how they "got here from Hamilton". I understand I'm being a bit hypocritical with this, but I also discovered clipping from Hamilton. But I DO recognize that clipping is a COMPLETELY separate and different thing from Hamilton. Their music deserves proper recognition that isn't just talking about Lafayette and whatnot. It does get slightly annoying sometimes with all the Hamilton references in the comments, but people will comment what they comment........
cookycandy4 thank you for saying this, I enjoy hamilton and I know other people do too but some people need to understand that yes, daveed was in hamilton, but he was playing someone in something he didn't create, this is HIM it has nothing to do with hamilton or the people in it

I see comments about Daveed and Hamilton. I see comments COMPLAINING about comments being about Daveed and Hamilton. You know what I really almost never see? Comments talking about the fact that Daveed is 33% of Clipping. Without William and Jonathan, there is no Clipping. They make it what it is, musically, and that is a big part of it. So let's argue the disrespect shown to them when all the discussion is about Hamilton, too.
Man, whoever they have making these videos knows just what everyone was expecting to see, and how to do something completely different that blows what you were expecting out of the water.
theory: what if that alarm clock isnt really an alarm clock at all, and it's actually a heart rate monitor? after all, the dude did die. just a thought.
Yeah I don't think so only because the previous song on the album is Dream. With this song being Get Up and a alarm clock it only makes sense that that's what it is
Now, when I hear an alarm clock, I start singing, "Here when they turn on the street lights...." instead of thinking, "F&*^, get up, b*&^h, you're late for worK!!!" I don't think that was the what they intended. LOL
I'm like 95% certain when his alarm clock goes off he just wakes up rapping
I actually woke up singing along to this tho lmao

After you mentioned it... 96
whenever the alarm clock ish sound turns into a chord i feel a little more alive

Listen to kaan, you'll be blown away

at first, i thought clipping. glamourized violence, but as i've listened to the songs more, i've realized that they actually do the exact opposite
It's kind of like they wear a guise of your typical gangster rap while pointing out how actually kind of awful street life is especially when it comes to violence. It's very interesting.
room Reminiscent of Kendrick, honestly.
yeah, definitely. i'm still waiting on that kendrick feature in a clipping track or vice versa, especially since daveed got a ton of recognition from hamilton. their styles would work so well together, particularly kendrick's skill in voice modulation and daveed's rapid-fire yet concise wordplay.
mm yeah they said something similar in straight outta compton
True enough. Daveed Diggs is just a narrator in CLPPNG, not glorifying anything or downplaying anything. Just telling it how it is.
I think it's supposed to be him being shot multiple times on the ground. Or just once.
I imagine just once and he is bleeding out.
probably in the hospital trying to wake up
Abster306 at 2:26 when it zooms in on his face you can see the woman singing as well
It's him bleeding out on the floor after getting shot. The girl singing in the chorus is clearly an angel of death. That's why he looks unsettled and comforted at the same time.

It's brilliant. How Daveed tells the gangster narrative so graphically. He approaches the street life critically while being empathetic to it at the same time. Like "it's fucked up but you gotta understand why things are this way before demonizing it". Beautiful
The one time I enjoy listening to an alarm clock
Didn't really appreciate how pretty Daveed's eyes were until they were staring at me in fear. Huh.
This is too deep.

"Back then we had real music."
I gotta say "fuck you" to that.
The great era for experimental shit.
Experimental shit ain't never wrong.
And yet back then is when the good music was also the popular music. That isn’t how it is now. Daveed isn’t on the radio. Trash bullshit is.

the only flaw of this song is that it's too short
@Alvin I actually think it's surreal nature adds to it.
It's sad when people can't get passed the alarm sound and instantly condemn this song. I hate alarm sounds but love this song.
This song made me actually like the sound an alarm clock makes now. Whenever I hear an actual alarm, I start nodding my head to it.
i set this song as my alarm and i usually hit snooze before daveed comes in but it just feels good to know its this song
I'm gonna say something stupid for lack of better words: This is genius.
To anyone pursuing a career in music. Please note how good this piece of music is. It's just an alarm clock and a damn good rapper doing god's work.
