This is the best comparison and unbiased unlike many youtube "reviewers" . Also hope they tone down the HDR in daylight. I don't see much improvement in jitter in low light.
If you completely turn off noise, reduction and sharpness, it helps a lot with the footage. Also, the new update helped with the jitters with the footage at night.
Thankyou for letting us know! I got my Action 5 last week and havn't had chance to use it due to projects piled up that needed working on. Will download now!
I practically didn't notice a difference between the old and the new update, even when the bit rate is higher in the new one. Except for a few shots in the dark. But anyway thanks for test comparison.
Great comparison video that, by the time it reached my monitor, showed very little difference before and after. I appreciate the commenters with sharper eyes that identified any specific improvements. Thank you for posting this information to help with the update process and the review.
I definitely noticed a difference with the slower shutter speeds. I mainly focused on the background which is where I was seeing a lot of the ghosting/jitters. With the new firmwear it looks greatly reduced. I want to test mine out shooting in manual at 1/50 with an ND filter outdoors and see if I notice a difference.
Actually they didn;t do anything. The Bitrate update has no obvious quality improvement and it's very subtle. They actually didn't address any of the issues Tamara had bringed up on the release date.
I’m actually really enjoying the Action 5 Pro. I’m finding it a great companion to my pocket 3. Your night footage in normal (non super night) with minimum shutter at 1/100 looks fantastic and ZERO jitter. I’ve found similar results in my own testing. 1/100-1/8000 and 25000 ISO gives the best night footage. They did improve super night a bit but it’s still not enough. Especially with the Ace Pro 2 dropping. I will say I did a huge test in daylight since the firmware update. My findings were similar to yours. Footage in D-Log M looks great. Regular footage, details and foliage seem improved but that HDR effect is still there. I think they went overboard with the “13 stops of dynamic range“. But if you recall, the Ace Pro 1 had permanent HDR on until they fixed it in a firmware update. They’ll fix this one. One thing I did also fine was that it seems to be worse for just a second or two when you move from shadow to light and then the camera adjusts itself really nicely. It just takes a second for the exposure to adjust, which to be fair, happens in pretty much every camera when in auto. Keep up the good work, I love your tests! Don’t give up on this camera. I think they have yet to fully get the most out of that new Qualcomm chip. They have barely tapped it.
The old supernight on the left looks so much better, around 2:50 it's really clear. Much more detail, better white balance. In the other shots the new firmware does look a bit better though. And in daylight it's also clear, there it more detail and less artifacts.
Nice comparison! New firmware looks to have a bit less compression, bit more noise reduction smoothness, less reds, less blues, more yellow and a touch more brightness. It's subtle but interesting to see.
The jitters in low light with the slower shutter speed improved with the new firmware. Daylight did not show any real difference. Hope they come out with a setting to reduce the HDR look and bring back a more natural sky and clouds.
When comparing the OA4 you said that it retained more detail. Has that changed with the firmware update on the OA5? With increased bit rate you would assume that the two cameras should be equal now

I don't think the Normal Mode daylight footage is as bad as people make out. And in the dark, I'm using a gimbal and turning off EIS and the footage is much cleaner because the muddiness caused by the EIS is neutralised. And I live in the Philippines, where it's often blindingly bright and sunny, so ND filters are a must.
To me, it looks like DJI added some blur to reduce the low light jitter. The scene most noticeable where you are walking away from the parking area (white sign, blue P).

Hope this helps, I noticed the same problem, after the firmware update. Thanks Luis
I have a question regarding the possibility of using multiple DJI Action 5 Pro cameras for a project. Is it feasible to record with two or three of these cameras while utilizing a single audio source? I’m looking to create multiple viewing angles and want to ensure the audio remains consistent across all recordings. Your insights on this setup would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
Yeah, I've done this with two of the cameras. All you need to do is connect the DJI Mic 2 to one of the cameras (the A cam) and then when you sync the footage in post you can just use the audio file from the main camera as the audio track.
Unfortunately most of the action cameras now use tone mapping for their standard colour profiles. The Natural profile on the HERO13 is very harsh on skin tones in contrasty conditions, particularly when backlit against the sun. I agree that there should be an option to turn it on and off, or better still have an Off, Low, Med, High setting for it.
Hi Tamara: Love the comparison, but honestly they can keep the High Bit Rate in the closet where it belongs, I have done extensive testing since updating and cannot see any difference between standard and HBR. using the inspector on the QuickTime player on the Mac, standard setting runs about 48-51 Mb/sec, and the HBR usually runs 87-90 Mb/sec, I don't think that improve the image so much, I may be wrong but I don't see it. It's hard for me to understand why a company like DJI can put out a camera like this with a normal color profile that is so weird, meaning way too much saturation on the normal color profile. Yeah, definitely reduced it. The more I've tested the low light footage since this video as well, the more I see how much better SuperNight is in the right situation.
I just think that its a mistake to use any tiny sensor action cam in the dark. It looks horrible.
The same as the insta360 ace pro.
Looked very the same
Yeah, I can’t see a huge difference
My screen dims every 10 seconds until I see almost nothing while recording... dang
Hi:
The reason is that in the settings of TURNING OFF THE SCREEN WHEN RECORDING YOU have set it to NEVER, just change it to 5 or 10 min and the dimming will disappear, DJI IS TRYING TO SAVE BATTERY, I had the same problem when I updated the firmware to the latest.
Thanks
Luis
…hope that DJI will fix ugly cartoon hdr look in normal mode and I really don’t like light or sun flares. Insta and gopro make flares much better.
👍👍👍👍👍👍👌👌
Personally I don’t see any difference at all maybe a tiny bit but nothing to write home about
Colin's 70% battery life bed time perhaps 10pm early morning battery gone why why ?
Colin's very upset help brought from Amazon perhaps sending back ?
Help me
Colin
The image from the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro is very noisy and blocky even in normal lighting condition - as in all footage here. Until this is addressed, this camera is not usable
you are😍 beautiful ..and that accent 🥰
The Action 5 pro, is very disappointing!! Not only is the new firmware update unnoticeable in terms of image quality due to bitrate differences in some instances, but also this new firmware update changed the battery time tremendously, but also created a overheating problem as well.. Sorry friends, I’m not that persuasive to overlook what was marketed, as oppose to what’s really being offered.. I know some are very loyal to. DJI, I respect that, so please respect my difference of opinion.. Have a great day all 🙏
Hi everyone, I want to switch to dji from a go pro hero 11. I'm still torn between choosing the osmo action 4 or the 5. Will future firmware updates resolve the muddy resolution problem of the action 5? Or should I just buy the action 4 since I prefer its quality more? The difference in their adventure combos is just $122 here so money's not a problem. I just want to know if the action 5's issues can be fixed 🥹
No one talks about how the osmo performs in webcam mode 😞
I might do a live stream to demo it.
@@TamaraGabrielUK I'd be forever grateful! 🙂
Don’t see any difference, to be honest. Disappointed.
Gewoon blijven filmen met de action 4
Inderdaad en de 5 pro skippen. Kwaliteit van de 4 is zelfs beter.
I don`t see anything! the same picture!
AI NR looks terrible
Yah i know if it was me I would’ve manually changed the settings myself than relying on AI.
Night mode is still shit, thank!
Haha, you’re welcome!
